A PvP dom for the new era...

I'm looking for another leveling project to switch off with during frequent periods of extreme deadness in RV. Doms look like they're about to get more interesting and I though I might try one of those. I've never pvp'd on a dom before so I'm not that sure what matters.

My current earth electric might possibly be ok for pvp, but going for a new from scratch, I'm thinking about either energy for pb, massive damage, and a ranged attack with 1.4 base acc, or maybe psi for DS and some reasonable damage.

As for the primary, I'm thinking of grav, mind or earth as maybe viable.

The way I see it, earth gives some really good dropped location effects, some decent -def, and stoney might even help some.

Mind gives you TK, and a confuse, and a knock

Grav gives you a knock and an intangible. Sing can't hurt either...

As usual, the odd duel, kickballs and zone only, I'm no test server pilot and I never will be. I've seen some discussion on some of these, but most of it seems to be pre dom change
I'd love to hear any comparative comments!

Your Earth/Elec will be good. If you go Energy secondary go with Earth for the primary (the -def in Earth helps the lack of Aim/BU in Energy) and if you go with the Mind primary, Psi, Elec, and Fire will be good.

PB will only boost the tohit from Tactics for the duration of PB.

Sure, but... buildup is only up for a short while as well...

Buildup also has a sizeable damage buff and is available as soon as you click the power, whereas wiith PB'd Tactics you'll have to turn off Tactics, wait for it to recharge, then hit PB, and then toggle on Tactics (and wait for an eternity while it activates). By that time your opportunity's probably gone by, and you didn't even get a damage bonus out of it.

this is not the case in real numbers as the Tohit and def boost is immediate

Really? That I didn't know. Still, PB'd Tactics lacks a damage buff, which is one of the main draws of Build Up.

I would keep the earth/elec, honestly. If you REALLY wanna reroll I would go mind/elec or ice/elec, mind for good damage and ice for Arctic Air messing up melee toons.

Thing is, my current PvP project is my rad/thermal, he's all leveled, but while there's no-one to fight, I WILL be leveling something, so that's something new.

I figure I might as well make whatever looks most likely to work well...

In any case, thanks for the advice so far!

I've recently been very impressed/surprised by how nasty HE is on my rad/thermal. This immediately draws my mind to a /psi dom

but there are some questions:

Are dominators going to duel long enough for attrition to really set in, and for DS to matter? (I'm guessing yes)

Is Psi going to have enough accuracy to be workable? with no aim/buildup power, and no -def, I have to worry!

What primary is going to work best?

Again, any thoughts are much appreciated

The -def in Earth at least somewhat makes up for the lack of Aim/BU in Psi Assault.

I used to do ok on my mind/psi in duels, and in zones it was workable. Tk was good and you had drain psych+psw spam. Then right around the time they buffed bf's versus tk, they also buffed confuse. Mind has some nasty tricks at your disposal, very good teamed in zones, or solo in the arena.

Edit: And who better to fight an elude scrapper with? Mind just wrecked positional defence.

I've been thinking...

If I'm going to make an earth pvp toon I'd try and use my earth/thermal controller or my earth/electric dom. Sure the damage probably isn't great, but He'd probably make everyone miserable... especially that troller with HE... That's just a nasty power...

then again, A mind/thermal might be good too...

bah, I need more slots.

A Mind/Therm PvP build is tight (when building for teaming anyways - a dueling build would have plenty of open slots). In order to fit in Speed, Leaping, Fitness, Phase, and PB (need 3 picks out of Primal) I was only able to fit in Dominate and Levitate from the primary.

I'm spec'd for team support, not damage. All I do is set up damage spikes with Levitate + Dominate and buff/heal when it's needed.

IMO Primal isn't as necessary for a Thermal as it is for an Emp/FF. As a therm PB will only have a noticeable effect in your heals and thats about it. I'd recommend going with Hiber/Leadership instead because having no perception sucks. That should also save you 2-3 power choices compared to Phase/PB, allowing you to pick up TK (who doesn't love an autohit hold that lets you debuff with impunity?), the soon to be awesome Confuse and even a placate-loaded Mesmerize.

If you're going for full team support then re-roll as Emp, which is much better than Therm for that role. Mind/Therm is better suited for an offensive play style with buffing/heals on the side.

Slot your hold for damage. Get more kb protection. On my old ice icy I used to use chilbain as an attack. you can probably shave some slots out of some powers and get it a little more slotting. You can get away with 2 lvl 50 rech ios in power boost. If you are going uto slot aa that much go purples. Not having any +perception is going to be a pain, but that is a personal preference.
