Finding Different Contacts?

I'm playing in Mercy Island doing mercenary missions, because Thug Mastermind is the perfect class for me, and even though I didn't want to be a bad guy, it's turning out pretty good. At threat level 7, I've already fought against Arachnos, Monsters, Corrupt Longbow agents so I feel like a dark hero. Then I hit a brick wall, when my next informant Doctor Creed wants me to gather humans to experiment on.

Is this my only choice to progress through the storyline, or can I get a different contact who will have me back to fighting some evil forces?

As early as Level 5 you can go to Port Oakes. There, you talk to either Mikey the Ear or Drea the Hook. They will get you started doing newspaper missions. After doing 3 paper missions, they will give you a Mayhem mission (rob a bank, blow stuff up, etc). Upon completion you will be introduced to one of three contacts of your choosing. You can repeat the process a couple more times to get the other two contacts.

One of those contacts (Bocor) will introduce you to the Radio, which will give you more missions.

Starting at level 10, you move on to Cap au Diable and begin the process over again for a new set of contacts (and some of those will introduce you to more. Repeat at 20 in Sharkhead Isle, 25 in Nerva (or more in Sharkhead), 30 in St. Martial, 35 in Nerva or more in St. Martial, and 40 and up in Grandville.

Also, after running the Midnighter arc for Darrin Wade, you can run missions in Cimerora (starting at 35). And also at 35, you can start working the Rikti War Zone.

There's also quite a few unlockable contacts as well. You get them by getting various badges mostly.

Mikey the Ear told me to find the broker. Where is he in port Oakes? How do I get newspaper missions? Did I literally choose them from a newspaper or is it automatic like my other missions?

Doctor Creed is the most outright villainous of the contacts in Mercy, so I'd advise you to move on to Port Oakes. Of that zone's contacts I'd say Billy Heck or Angelo Vendetti will allow you to keep a clean-ish conscience.

Later on I'd steer well clear of Peter Themari or Westin Phipps in particular, if I were you

If Mikey sent you away that means Drea the Hook is your broker. He's marked on the map, in dockside.

Once you speak to him you'll get a new option in your contact tab - the newspaper. Open it up to be given a choice of missions.

You don't get to choose your broker, one is assigned. If Mikey tells you to buzz off then your contact list should have Drea in it. Once you see the "right" broker you should have a newspaper as a contact. The newspaper will give you a choice of three missions. Do three of these and your broker's contact bar should be full and then they will give you the bank heist mission.

Mikey the Ear just tells me he expects big things from me. Does that mean I should talk to Drea the Hook instead?

Check your contacts window. Do you have the newspaper? If so, click on it to get started on your newspaper missions. Complete 3 of them to get a Mayhem, then complete that to get a new contact from the broker (and it sounds like Mikey is your broker after all.)

I guess none of this matters now since my name and costume were just reset a moment ago without any notice...well now I got an email. Now it all makes sense.

Obviously either your character's name, appearance and/or bio was a little too close to a trademark or copyrighted character. You should receive a notification email at the address you have listed in your account about steps to getting a new name and costume. Don't let that stop you playing.

Curiosity causes me to ask what was your character's name and/or appearance that may have set someone off this early in the morning.

Look at his screen name. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess it was a Shadow clone.

Well i guess I should feel happy some people know who I was impersonating since he isn't well known in the 21st Century.

Heck I know a lot of people with "The Shadow" look a likes. I have a few. Black suit, black hat, black mask over mouth. But mine are in CoH and are D3s or D2 scrappers and their bio and name don't even suggest who I'm homaging.

As for not well known in the 21st Century, well they still show the Adam Baldwin movie version on TV every once in a while.

Just for future reference.

1. Go to Port Oakes when you hit 5+ish.

2. A broker will automatically appear in your Contact Window (Mikey or Drea).

3. Physically go to the broker. This will unlock the Newspaper.

4. The Newspaper will automatically appear in your Contact Window. Click it to get a choice of one of three 'Schemes.'

5. When you do a 'Scheme', it will fill up the confidence bar of the broker of that zone (for Port Oakes, 3 schemes will fill the bar for Mikey or Drea).

6. When their bar is full, the Newspaper won't give you any more Schemes, but you'll be told to see your broker.

7. Go to your broker who will give you a Mayhem mission (bank robbery).

8. Doing a mayhem mission against a particular bank (Atlas Bank, Founders Bank, etc...) successfully will give you a one-time temp power. Side missions may give you added bonuses. Whether you succeed or fail the Mayhem mission, your broker will give you a new contact for your level.

Vendetti has you kill a man. Then blames the Council for that death in order to recruit said man's super-powered daughter. I found that to be much worse that anything Bocor asked me to do

I agree, I had to stop playing villain side for a few weeks after that.

And I thought it was Ashley McNight at 30th that allowed villains access to Cimerora, not Darren Wade. Darren is certainly a contact the OP will want to avoid given his motivations. I'll be avoiding him from now on if only because he made me feel like a patsy. I like to at least pretend my villains are smarter than that.

For some activities in the Isles, it takes a bit of imagination to justify them.

Vendetti for example...

My villains always figure that they are helping Niles fake his death and getting him out of the Rogue Isles to safety. (slap a teleporter on him as he goes down and then set the coordinates for our associates' base in Paragon. One of these days I will write an MA story where his niece gets rescued from the Council.)

Archmage Tarixus... When he has me kidnap Akarist and offer him to the Thornies, I "get Akarist to safety". Then I replace him with an inflatable Akarist (filled with Folgers Crystals). The Thornies could not tell the difference.

Drop off the Outbreak canisters? Before going in, the Outbreak is replaced with either Jolt, or once again, Folgers Crystals.

Deliver citizens to the Vahz surgeons... After rescuing them, I clue them into what is going on, coach them how to react, and then train the Longbow troops on the Vahzies. If that fails, then a coded message goes out to our associates in Paragon, cluing them into a rescue operation they need to do ASAP.

Mayhem missions? Like pro wrestling, those are staged.

Various other activities, I just chalk up to general mercenary work, with the understanding that the good guys will win anyway no matter what.

Still, I will not work for Creed or Phipps. There are also a few others that I can't remember who are just a bit too evil to justify working with.

Posted

That was obviously a false story from Faux News. There are no children in King's Row. Those were most likely Nemesis Child Automatons that were rigged to explode in a mist of Folgers Crystals. At least, that is the most likely explanation according to Ms. Amanda Vines of WSPDR.
