Should this forum not be purged?

This forum recently got purged of old threads, I think that should not have happened, what do you think?

Both the Screenshots & Fan Art and Roleplaying forums are marked "Do not purge". I believe this is to prevent getting rid of player's creative works. Do you feel that this forum is in the same category as those two? While there is typically no specific creative works in this thread, there are links to creative works in the form of mission arc advertisements and the link is the arc ID#. There are also reviews of mission arcs which are creative works in and of themselves. There is also a sticky thread where you can advertise your arc and link to it, which may now be a dead link.

The only downside is that there are some people who take down their arcs for whatever reason, and there are a few pointless discussions or questions here or there, but that holds true for the Screenshots & Fan Art section as well.

What are your thoughts on the subject?

I'm not sure if it should never be purged, but it should definitely not be purged as often as the other forums are. While some threads may sink to the bottom and be for dead arcs that were long since unpublished, many of them are for live arcs and the people who bother to post them here are likely to be maintaining them.

I guess I'll have to shamefully bump my arc thread more often, to keep it from going to thread 'purgatory'.

Group should be set to "do not purge", agreed. This forum is a creative process, from inception to execution to revision. Losing valuable discussions on arcs is a loss for the author, and for the community trying to build from worthwhile examples.

So yeah, I'm for the "do not purge" flag on this board.

I was going to do just that - mainly to draw attention to the fact I've been updating them based on feedback - and found the original thread for my first arc was already gone. I just don't have the time to live my life, play CoH and keep up with these boards as much as I would like to. I'd feel cheesy starting a whole new thread for the same ol' arc, but... I've seen worse in this section.

Bummer!

I think I'd remake it, just to spite the 'forum gawds'!

But, maybe that's just me.

Kinda makes me wonder if the "community designed" approach we currently use is the most efficient one. Right now, we put up a thread for each arc. Maybe we should have one thread for each player, and just use the subject field to denote Arc references?

There's a certain logic to this; the boards respect responses that are "linked" to a certain title, so it's almost like having a miniforum setup that way.

I was toying with this idea, as I really didn't want to make a new thread for my next arc, but wanted to rehash the discussion material from the previous arc. Setting it up this way might be the most efficient way to go, for board efficiency and ease of searching.

Thoughts? Think of it this way, if you're always using the same thread to update your stuff, then you're ensuring your older stuff is retained vs forum purges. Less clutter on the boards (everyone gets their own thread, instead of the prolific "I AM UBAR AUTOR I MAEK OVER 9000 ARCS!!!" and spamming the place to heck).

I didn't even realize they were regularly purging the "normal" threads now. How often does that happen?

Usually every few months. Any thread with no post within a few weeks will get deleted, unless it's flagged "do not purge" or if a redname posted in it. Keeps the forums fresh.

Yikes, seems like a good reason to have this forum "do not purge."

Well, I wouldn't mind losing some threads - the ones for test versions of arcs that got replaced in live. But yeah, as someone who had all his threads for live missions vanish, I'd rather they didn't.

One thing they've done in the S&FA forum is created a recycle bin post where one person went through a lot of the old threads and marked those that were outdated and didn't contain any art. A major undertaking for that forum, but if it's done regularly it wouldn't be too much work.

Seeing as how I just found out that the thread for my second arc is gone now too, I was kicking around that very idea. I figured I might wait until I get my third arc done... which means probably sometime next year, at this rate. :P I guess it'd be better to start it up now (or "Soon[tm]") and be able to announce the new arc in it when it finally gets done.

On the other hand, it makes a bigger splash I think to be able to post a whole new thread for "ARC#98070897678 - THE BESTEST THING EVER WITH A PONY 4U!", I'm betting that draws more eyes than "yet another update to thread X".

So I'll probably wait until I have my third arc and then use it's thread as a catch-all for my previous two as well. Maybe that'd be the best method for this to work - post separate threads for each arc as you fill up your slots then one final one for the 3rd arc and then move any discussion from the old threads about old arcs into the one single.

By the way guys, see my sig? I have two arcs you can go play! Both are at 4-star averages with something like 42 and 32 plays respectively! (I am so cheesy #u.u#)

ooooo i want to play this arc!!!

Don't get your hopes up, that's not the actual title or content of the next arc I'm working on.

On the other hand, an arc that gave out souvenirs called "A PONY 4U!" would be pretty awesome right there:

A PONY 4U!
.................................................. ...............................

You got a pony for your very own! Now remember, you promised to feed it, give it water, clean up after it and take it out for gallops along the beach when we said you could have one, so you have to be good and keep up with all that, ok honey?

PONY!!!!!>>squeeee!<<

Or something like that...

When I first saw all of the threads for people's arcs, I decided to make just one thread for all. I just figured it would be easier for me to keep everything together. I also thought spamming one wasn't quite as bad as spamming 3. Since I was a n00b and hadn't really posted a lot, here on the boards, I didn't want people to get irritated by me bumping more than one. I didn't want to be the Billy Mays of the CoX forum.

Besides, if they're all in one thread, you get more variety to offer people. I didn't really expect a lot of activity for any of my arcs, which is actually the way it's turned out to be, so far. So, this way it's all in one very small package.

As someone who only recently got back into checking out the Board here specifically because of my interest in finding interesting Architect stories, I'm very disappointed that earlier threads were purged. As a long-term veteran of CoH, this is one of the few forums where new research on my part can really benefit my game play. This forum gives me ideas on what missions I might be interested in playing and it's a shame that they have gotten rid of so much valuable material that I missed entirely.

Thanks for creating this thread Bubbawheat - I support you 100%.

And I hope that players who had informational posts in this forum purged will re-post so that people like me who have recently gotten back into reading the forums can see all the good information you were putting out there!
