Atlas park i14 mapserver bug

Posted

As far as i can tell i14 has introduced a bug where everyone in atlas park is mapservered. I don't know about other servers but this occurs semi frequently on triumph. Just about every time i hang out in AP i get mapservered at least once, that implies to me that it happens fairly frequently. If anyone else has any information on this please post. I know i am not alone because last night i logged back in after a mapserver and i was the only person under atlas. That happened at maybe 8pm...i forget the exact time. I don't remember anything like this happening before i14.

I15 isn't out yet.

It's not even on test yet.

As for a zone-wide mapserver... what server were you on, and when? There have been instances where Freedom and Virtue will go from "yellow" to "locked" and boot a bunch of people off. This has been going on since, oh... the Double XP weekend BEFORE last (before the holiday events).

We are in issue 14.

How long after beginning the "hang out" does it occur? Are you doing anything else besides hanging out (powers, craft bench, AE editor, etc)?

Logging back into the game and finding yourself alone is not proof that everyone else just map served.

Next time you are in Atlas, try this:

Note exact loaction by using /loc

Note time and server.

Open netgraph using /netgraph 1
Under normal conditions, this will be a nice bright green line running along bottom of screen.

Go to the area you are talking about and watch the netgraph. If it explodes into constant green, or spikes of yellow and red then you may have something.

oops, sorry definately meant i14 and if you can guess based on my sig i normally play on the triumph server. i'm 90% sure that everyone got discoed. i was standing with a bunch of other people when it happened and they all slowly came back over the course of 5 minutes or so. I've had it happen under atlas and in the AE building.

I'm also glad there are plenty of you to take enjoyment from typos in a thread about a serious problem affecting many players.

Well let's go over a few things. One you are the only person who has started a thread about it. Two nobody else has spoken up and said the same thing happened to them. And three, every once in a great while a zone mapserve does happen.

Taking all that into consideration I would have to say that "a serious problem affecting many players." is a bit overstated. Somewhat akin to saying that boxer gloves, bunny ears, and robot feet when combined in the costume creator causing a problem with secondary colors is a serious problem affecting many players.

And the fact that you keep mapserving in Atlas indicates to me a problem with your system. Maybe if you posted some CoHhelper and Hijackthis results somebody might be able to tell you what was going on.

1. I was trying to help.

2. This is the first I have heard about it making it a very isolated problem at the least.

3. Did you try any of the things I mentioned or are you going to just be bull headed and stomp your feet about it?

Since the release of I14, Atlas Park has seen even more traffic than normal.

Some of it is due to people not realizing they don't have to go to the Atlas AE building to run or create missions. Some of it is due to people going to AP to run AE missions to try to PL lowbie friends or alts, thus contributing to the zone congestion. Likely there are other reasons AP is seeing higher player congestion than those I've mentioned, but I'd wager most of them are related to AE.

The two places you mentioned, under Atlas statue and the AE building, are two of the most congested places in Atlas. It is very possible that this is contributing to the mapserves you mention.

I don't go to Triumph, or for that matter anywhere other than Justice, and I seldom pay attention to the Server Loads shown on the Server Selection screens, so I'm not sure how the server load has been during those times.

Out of curiosity, are you running any other programs at the same time as CoH? What are your graphics setting set to? Have you tried lowering the graphics settings to see if that has any effect? What OS are you running? How much memory do you have? Is it a laptop or desktop? By "hang out in AP" approximately how much time are you talking about? When you are beginning to see issues, try doing a /search and see how many players are in AP and unhidden? This would give you a rough idea of how full the zone is.

All of the above questions may help troubleshoot the issue you say you are having.

Hi,

I have played this game off and on since launch but have never posted before. I felt the need on this issue though. Rox has posted this in hopes of an answer from a red name I am sure. This issue does not just effect him, EVERYONE in atlas on the Triumph server gets dumped en masse, and it happens several times a day. Those of you who are not Triumph regulars would not be aware of this. He has no problem with his computer, or connection.......This issue is 100% server side. I for one join Rox in asking someone qualified to address the issue to please respond to it.

As others have pointed out, it DOES happen to other servers and other zones as well. Yes, it can get annoying.

Maybe while you are waiting for an answer, you can stop hanging around Atlas and work on some other content. Then you can also see if it spreads to other zones. If you are doing AE all the time.. there are AE buildings in almost every other zone as well. What else are you doing in Atlas that would keep you confined there, especially if the issue is so common?

I'm inclined to agree with texas. the AE building is most likely the culprit. I haven't had a chance to hang out in atlas lately i'm posting this thread from work so i can't really check it out now.

I considered my connection being at fault but A) it hasn't been at fault before and B) no other programs have shown evidence of a connection issue. I also don't reason that it is my computer since it's a brand new, i7 920 3G ram 4870 running XP, system that i built in january. The fact of the matter is i'm conservative and i've been running at lower game settings so i "don't stress the new hardware" even though COH at max settings is probably just a small bite for the 4870. That's why i don't suspect a problem at my end.

I believe that none of you have heard of it because the problem is so prevalent that nobody bothers to report it because they figure that one of the other 50-100 people affected in that particular drop has reported it. If you don't believe that no one would have spoken up, there is research and evidence to support it that are wholly unrelated to this thread. Generally i think that people have become accustomed to it. In fact i am at fault here too. I should have submitted a bug report, but i did not i figured plenty already had and that i would be "one of the masses" here to complain about the problem.

The reason i hang out in atlas is the same reason anyone else does and that is to socialize with friends participate in CC's promote my SG and generally do the MM parts of this MMO.

lachlin, i apologize if i offended you that was not my intention and thank you for your support Nova

Just to throw in some additional grist for the mill, I am an old player, just resubscribed this month. I notice that EVERY time I enter a certain area of AP, I get lag. EVERY TIME. I could be on at 3am, running around like mad, and when I cross a certain threshold, I lag, sometimes to the point of disconnecting.

Needless to say, I go around

Yes, that would be as you approach the AE building. I avoid that entire section of Atlas Park for that reason. The delay is caused by the server having to send you current status information about X number of players that are coming into render range.

I thought I would collect some data. I logged an alt into Triumph and parked him under Atlas. Here is what I have at the time of this post. I do plan to leave him there through the heightened evening play.

Using a low end rig. For each time period I observed for about 5-10 minutes looking for hits in network activity. All times are Pacific.

0930 - 20 Users; Ping time average 220. netgraph clean.

1130 - 36 Users; Ping time average 217. netgraph clean.

(Went to see the new Star Trek movie)

1530 - 44 Users; Ping time average 218. netgraph clean.

I realize without a history on the netgraph I only have those windows to observe.

That being said, the character has been logged in continuously in the same spot since 0930 this morning. I plan to leave him for a few more hours soaking up that nutty evening slam of players, then I'll post more info.

There are many factors that can effect individual results. I have a very reliable and solid internet connection.
Internet Speed Test

Graphics card, settings, internet provider, internet connection type, and yes the server may have stability issues but I so very rarely mapservered that I am usually a hard sell on that one.

Not to say the server is not to blame, I have been playing long enough to have seen stability nightmares. We'll see how my alt does tonight.

Posted

I have noticed a increase in mapserving as well. I didn't think to see if anyone else has been having an issue though.

Posted

Ok, last data point.

1815 pacific: 53 users in Atlas; Ping time average is 250 (slightly elevated); Netgraph is clean. almost 9 hours logged in to Atlas on Triumph and no mapserver drop.

I don't know what the issue could be, but if so many are seeing it, there must be something to it. I just can't see it.

I highlighted a couple of points that I'd like to give you an answer to.

The red names seldom come here unless pointed here by someone else about a specific issue that they are already looking at. The lone exception to this in the past was Super Martin, and he mostly looked at posts on issues he was already working on or those someone had sent him a PM about. Sadly, Super Martin isn't with us any longer. This section is mostly players helping players solve problems.

As for the part about getting someone qualified to look at this, I'd suggest using the ingame /bug report and/or contacting Customer Support using the Knowledge Base "Ask A Question" page. This link is in some current and former Community Team and Developer signatures. Those are the only ones "qualified" if I understand how you use the term, to look at this.

Good luck.

Well, I can see you are convinced that it can't be your system. Which means it's probably your system.

Those who are most often certain that the fault isn't on their end are most often the ones with multiple problems on their end.

So if your system is not a problem how about proving it to us by posting that Hijackthis and CoHhelper?

Well, you are missing the first part of the CoHhelper which would show how up to date your drivers are and what kind of memory you have free. However with what is visible.

Turn off bloom. It sometimes causes interference with ATI cards.

Also you should switch to either AVG or Avira for your anti virus. Both are free and work much better and more efficiently than what you have.Symantec (ie Norton) is a bit of a memory hog and is also heavy handed with some files. This is especially true when it needs to do some background process. It will often steal memory and processor time from some other program. It's at it's worst when the other program isn't actually actively doing much at the moment. For instance if you should happen to be sitting in Atlas and just chatting or such.

Teatimer.exe has been known in rare instances to cause CoH to crash. That was a problem a long time ago and I haven't seen it crop up recently, but some recent change may have caused the bug to crop up again.

You have a few missing files in your Hijackthis report. Nothing important but you can clean them up by running Hijackthis again and checking those boxes then choosing to fix them.

Also, what brand and wattage power supply are you running? It may not be strong enough to handle your card being pushed by the CoH graphics engine and the file swaps to your drive.

I really wish you hadn't called me "Your Highness" by the way. I was hoping to keep my identity as the king of the Duchy of Grand Fenwick secret. Now I guess the mouse is out of the bag.
