vista question
and one last question figure I would piggy back it on to this, any suggestions for a cheap video card that I can run to my TV? I'm going to be using my old machine as my hulu/netflix streamer in the living room.

Well, look at what Ultimate gives you.
Do you need to join a domain? (If your answer is "A what," say "no.")
Do you need bitlocker?
Ultimate Extras are, pretty much, a bust.
Do you need Remote Desktop connectivity?
Typically... Home Premium is fine. About the only feature I'd want that shows up on MS's checklist is a backup - and I tend to do that anyway.
(Personally, with MS saying "Yes, we believe we'll be getting Win7 out this year instead of 2010," my next system is getting built with that in mind.)
Ultimate was just another way to gouge money. There are some unique features only available to Ultimate, but the majority of those "features" can actually be acquired through 3rd-party software or even some registry hacks if memory serves me correctly.
I would say Home Premium is more than sufficient (It's what I currently run as well).
Pretty much the same can be said about Windows 7 Ultimate and it's features. A lot of what is included in Ultimate either doesn't pertain to normal everyday users, or is available through 3rd-party software.
Hope that helps
As for a cheap video card, you can probably pick up an nVidia 8600GT for under $100 if not well under. That should be more than enough for what you're planning to use it for
We'll see....
Thanks for the ideas... I'm running vista home prem 32 bit ATM and I have no complaints about it. I'm just looking around at different things out there right now. I'm not going to be building it tomorrow, I still have a month or two to mess around.
Altho I did see a package deal on tigerdirect for a vid card and 64 ultimate for about 210 bucks, not too bad... its a 9400. Like I said I'm just looking for something that'll let the wife stream her movies to the TV in the living room.
But looking at the combo of home premium and a vid card I think I may be making out better here....
Thanks again!

Personally I'd stay away from x400 series. x600 series and up would be better bang for your buck.
I realize you're not gaming with this machine any longer, but the x600 series will still yield better results. Even if it is just video. The x400 series cards are truly bottom of the barrel and not worth the money as usually for the same price or a tiny bit more, you can get a x600 series.
We'll see....
I run an 8800GT (special edition of all things) on one of my rigs here, and for me, thats the minimum for this game. Even on that card, maxed settings no FSAA or AF villains can slow down to a crawl.
so yeah. don't know about the 8600GT and, no 9400 please! my card out performs an 9600GT!

On my machine now I'm running a 9800 gt but I'm pulling it out and putting it into the new machine i set up.
I'm not looking for a card to play the game on, as I said I'm going to be making my current comp into a video streamer in the living room for netflix and hulu, no gaming on that...

NOW another question, whats the deal with OEM DVDs?
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
It's a licensing thing.
OEM disks don't come with Microsoft support, the PC provider is suppose to do it which for DIYers means you.
They are meant to be tied to the hardware in question. In a retail version, the license says you can transfer that copy of the OS to another piece of hardware as long as it's removed from the PC it was originally on. An OEM license binds the two together. Sell/donate the PC, the OS license goes with it, no save.
With a retail copy, I believe you can upgrade to the 64-bit OS for a slight charge (shipping of the DVD). With the OEM version, you choose up front 32-bit or 64-bit.
That's all I can think of off hand. I'm sure some nice player who is a certified Microsoft tech will come by to add anything I missed or correct me if I misrepresented something.

If you're not planning on installing the OEM copy on any other machine, and or not planning to make severe hardware changes to that machine....save yourself the $200 and go with the OEM copy.
Also to reiterate from earlier in the thread, I understand you're not planning to game on the old machine, but I would still recommend at least an x600 series card. Once again, you can get it for the same price if not a tiny bit more than the x400 series. Better to get more for your dollar. Especially if you're planning to watch any HD content.
We'll see....
Hmm what would you call a "severe hardware change"
as in mother board or something along those lines later on down the line?
I might just bite the bullet and get the full version just to be safe.

Keep in mind with the Media you buy it doesnt matter which edition the media says it is, it only checks for the serial code. So upgrade media can do full install and vice versa. Right now for vista there is not much use of picking ultimate over home premium, but for windows 7 only ultimate, enterprise and I think business will be able to get xp mode. Keep in mind after June 26 anyone who buys a vista pc is eligible for a free windows 7 upgrade to the corresponding version you have. So vista ultimate gets a free windows 7 ultimate, home premium gets home premium.

Thanks for the info on that...
NOW if I buy the OEM version of it would I get the full windows 7 upgrade?
and I guess I should wait till after june 26th?

If I remember correctly, this deal is for anyone who purchases a full system that comes with Vista pre-installed. I may be wrong though.
As for what I meant by "severe hardware changes", yes motherboard/CPU would classify as that. Some people have even had issues re-activating by just switching our RAM as well.
We'll see....

[/ QUOTE ]All it takes is one phone call to MS and just say your motherboard went out and they will re-activate you. I have never known them to not do it ever.

I have a sweet 8-gig Q9450 Core 2 Quad, nVidia 8800GTS 512 OC, and Vista Ultimate 64. Without fail, I get bumped to desktop a couple of times every night due to the Vista/nVidia/CoH Combo of Love. Get Ultimate 64 and enjoy notifying every team you're on that you may possibly disappear, but will immediately relog. It's groovy.

hey guys I'm going to be building a new rig in the near future going to be running vista 64bit, now do I want ultimate edition or home premium?
I see some things listed for differences but not a big deal to me outside of about 70 bucks or so on tigerdirect.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
And before anyone starts saying how bad/evil/vile vista is, I have had no problems whatsoever on it with my current rig, and it is actually more stable than XP was on my previous computer.
Thanks!
