Monitor causing computer shutdown?

Howdy all. I just spent 1700 on a really awesome system. The only problem is it will randomly reboot, among other things, and none of us can figure out why. Someone tried to tell me it may be the plasma monitor that I'm using. Could this be true? If not, let me know all the information I should provide to get help on fixing this issue. I'm still a bit of a noob at computer crap.

Though I'm not much of a "techie", those that are will want your Dxdiag report, and a HijackThis! report will be good as well.

For Dxdiag go to Start-Run, and enter: dxdiag

When it finishes checking out your system (progress bar disappears), click on the Save Information button. Save the text file to wherever, and copy the contents of it here.

For HijackThis!, visit here and run this program. Copy the file to here as well.

There's so many things it can be. Have you been able to spot any sort of pattern at all? Is it after X amount of time on, during or after using a particular program? What kind of power protection do you have? Could it be something else in the house causing a power fluctuation?

Can you tell us the brand and model? Also, what kind of monitor is it? I've never heard of a monitor causing a reboot, though.

The thing is, there is no pattern. I could be playing, I could not be. I could be surfing YoUTube, I could not be. I've taken it back to him and every time I do he says nothing is happening for him.

In addition to the tools mentioned above, if you're running a Windows machine, enable all of the error reporting to the event logs. After a reboot, go back and see if you can see anything flagging there before the reboot happened.

hmm... Assuming he had it running long enough that it *should* have happened, that suggests it's something specific to the location. Do you have an uninterruptible power supply you could run it on to see if it's a power issue?

What operating system are you using? Windows, Mac? XP, Vista, which service pack?

If in Windows, make sure that you disable autorebooting.

Right-click My Computer, choose Properties. Click the Advanced tab then the Startup and REcovery button. In the System Failure section, uncheck Automatically restart.

This way if you are getting a blue screen error, you should have the opportunity to read/write down the information on it. Searching that information can help a lot.

Hey, thanks for all the attempts at fixing it. I was in the middle of running a HiJackThis and a dxdiag per request, and it shut down on me again. So me and a friend tore it apart. It was the RAM. Everything is good now. Thanks!
