Portable Mac-ing?

I've had various and sundry issues with my PCs lately, and I've always wanted to get a Mac anyway, so I've been thinking about taking the plunge. I need portability for work travel, which I do fairly regularly for 2-4 weeks at a time.

The obvious choice is one of the Macbooks, but the price is making me think twice. The Minis look cool, but I don't know what I'd be giving up with those (other than the obvious need to have some sort of monitor/keyboard available on the far end of the trip).

What are people running CoH on in the way of Macs? Is one of the lower-end laptops sufficient, or will I need a Pro? If I go with a Mini, which configurations have folks been using?

Thanks for any input!

I've been running it on a 2009 Mini (2GB, 320GB) and it's been performing just fine for me (though a little laggy since i14).

Since the mini I have and the alu macbooks have the same specs I would guess they'd be about the same.

I play from my Macbook Air (base configuration, no upgrades). At 1024x768, the default graphics settings seem fine. I find that it heats up as I play for extended periods of time, though, which can get a bit uncomfortable.

I also travel a lot, and I definitely wouldn't recommend taking a Mini. It's not really built to be toted around.

If you're price-sensitive, you are likely better off getting a PC laptop.

The main disadvantage of the Mac Mini is the difficulty of changing RAM (due to the very hard to open case) which means you'll probably need to pay Apple for the RAM you want (which isn't always cheap). Still, they're nice machines.

That's more or less what I'd figured, but glad to hear it confirmed.

Anyone else use a Macbook of any kind to play? What sort of specs?

I already have a PC laptop for work, FYI, a Dell D630. It does OK but there's some annoying flickering and the heat gets really bad after an hour or so. If the Macs aren't any better then I won't bother.

I bought the cheaper aluminum macbook...2.0 GHz processor, 2 GB memory, 160 GB hard drive and Nvidia GeForce 9400 M graphics, and run CoH pretty well on it. I can't say I have a lot of experience with it (this is only my second full day with it =P) but so far, I haven't found anything to complain about. If you dont mind the price ($1299), it's a great laptop.

It's about 4.5 pounds according to Apple's website, so it isn't too bad to carry around. The lightest would be the Air, which you can get refurbished for around $999, but it does have drawbacks like not having a Cd drive (you can buy one for $90ish from Apple that plugs in) and only 1 USB port, but it's worth looking into.

I also recommend taking a look at the section on Apple's website with refurbished laptops. They work just as well IMO, and you can save a lot of money.

I use a Macbook Pro (late 2008) from time to time: 2.53 ghz, nvidia 9600 (set to "performance") or 9400 (set to "saving"), 4 gigs of RAM. It plays almost as well as my PC desktop with an nvidia 9800.

This is what I play on, too.

I bought the white MacBook (2009) model, which released in February. Stock, it has an nVidia 9400M, and 2 GB of RAM. Although the Mac-OS native client does not play as smoothly as does the native PC client (P4, 2GB, 8600GT/512)--I'm looking at YOU, SG and Vanguard bases--I have found only one way to require a forced restart: tab the game client out to the desktop, and leave it there in the background more than a few minutes.

Without running the game client, I can force confusion and occasionally require a hard restart when I shut it down and move it from the office to home, which involves connecting and disconnecting an external monitor--this can cause the dock and menubar to be attached to the wrong screen, with the easiest fix being just restarting.

Amusingly, I've even closed the lid on the machine while the game client is running, sending it into sleep, and been able to continue playing by opening the machine up again in less than the server disconnect cycle time.

This machine retails for just under $1000 new.

Some days I just wake up cranky. Today might be one of those days...

I also use a MacBook (2009), albeit the metal finish, not the white one. It has pretty much the same specs as the previous poster with the main difference being 4GB RAM (this is my work laptop). No complaints here with the only "laggy" spots being high "population" zones where there's 30+ players or the base portals. Still trying to figure out how to reduce the FPS hit I get when near those base portals.

For reference, I also play on an Alienware m9700 with dual-video cards on rare occasions (my daughter uses the Alienware most of the time) and other than it having some of the advanced graphics features the Mac client doesn't have, I've found the Mac client to be sufficient.

That being said, IF I could pick one to use most of the time, it would probably be my Alienware since I love the extra eye-candy I get on it. Then again, if I want to run a task force or 2, I'd rather play on my Mac since it tends to be more stable for long stretches of time.

Just my $.02...
