VIsta Crash/Lockup - Hotfix doesn't Work
All I know is that when I switched to Vista, I have had nothing but trouble with crashing.

It downloaded and unzipped fine but the game still randomly locks up on me with "Not Responding".

Hold it there... the GAME locks up on you?
The hotfix is there to help with a timing problem with video drivers. When you get hit by it, the screen goes black (sometimes white) for a few seconds then the game goes away. Down near your clock there's a little message saying the video drivers stopped responding and had to be restarted.
However, you can also have Windows give you that message when the game locks up. Everything stops and, when you click on the game anywhere, you get a message telling you it has stopped responding. Or you bring up Task Manager and find that Cityofheroes.exe is not responding. That's something completely different.
Assuming this is Vista's fault, especially after getting a whole new PC, is pretty insane. New PCs can have all sorts of problems. That's been true since before MS DOS, nevermind Vista.
This is a 9xxx series card that hasnt done a driver rollback. On many of the 9xxxx I clearly stated in the guide that even with BOTH the hotfix and the driver rollback sometimes we dont get a clean behavior. Welcome to 9xxx series cards, enjoy your stay :P
Please finish working through the guide, and then post back.
And Zloths right, heck this isnt even vista's issue its a card/driver/game/os combo issue. Ton of variables. My Vista box is solid.
Tease
Well I finally had time to go back and do the driver rollbacks, and nothing - problem still persists. The first driver offset my screen where I couldn't log in and the 2nd one listed still gave me a crash. I haven't had time to install the third yet but I don't have a good feeling about it - will do that tonight hopefully.
The game will randomly freeze/lock up and then immediately switch to a black screen. Eventually I get dumped back out onto my desktop (most of the time I just end the process) and I get the error message of "nvlddmkm has stopped responding and has recovered" etc.
I really don't know what else to do. I've googled the problem and after two years of this issue and no fixes I'm at a loss.
Any other ideas to help get this stopped/working correctly?
My account is up in 2 weeks and I don't see any point in paying for another year if I can't play for more than 5 minutes at a time (sometimes I get lucky and get it to stay for longer) - even though I really don't want to cancel.
I've read by googling about issues relating to heat/overclocking but that's beyond my realm of technological experience and wouldn't have the first clue in trying to understand any of the stuff they are posting relating to that.
*ANY* other ideas or attempts to fix this?
(I'd edit the title based on the reply's but it's too late).
I had those problems solved by running in windowed-maximized mode, instead of fullscreen. Hotfix did nothing, drivers did nothing, just constant dvldblahblah driver broke and is okay now issues. Lots of people have this issue, and those have have solved it personally never have their fixes work for others 100% of the time. So worth a shot I guess.

The only 100% fix is to install XP instead of Vista. I was like you and tried all the hotfix and all the test and possible drivers I could come up with and nothing fixed it. So I went back and reinstalled XP and didn't crash once since.

Trying to play in window mode instead of full screen would be my suggestion to try as well. None of the other suggestions I've seen did anything for me, but changing from full screen to windowed mode took me from getting the driver or w/e stopped responding and recovered every 10-15 mins to getting the problem about once or twice a week.
Have you tried making sure the desktop and game have the same resolution? This does make a difference for some folks. Also keep in mind with the hotfix there have been 2 versions of it. Make sure you are using version 2, version 2 will also be in the upcoming service pack for vista.

I'll try redoing the hotfix tonight and checking my resolutions.
The windowed-maximized mode worked for about an hour last night while idling around in the AE building but crashed on the second mission of an arc as soon as I started missions.
I installed Speedfan to see if overheating is happening, but it doesn't get too hot (around 50 C) so I don't think thats happening either.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

Well, it will certainly stop the "driver stopped responding" message. Under XP, it will just give a blue screen of death or suddenly reboot your PC. That's not exactly what I would call a 'fix', though.
I'm still not real clear on how new this PC is. Lucenter, have you played a lot of other games on this PC with no problems? I'm starting to wonder if some of the memory on the card might be bad.
Very New - was bought in early March (May have been late February).
I had thought of that being a possibility, but I have played through the entire Mass Effect game on high settings without so much as noticing a lag - much less a crash.
actually Zolth, I installed XP instead of Vista on this machine and didn't crash in over 8 months. Now to me that sounds like a fix. No blue screen, no error with driver... nothing. The problem is with how Vista times itself with the drivers ( if I understood correctly) and since XP doesn't have the same architecture than Vista and doesn't talk to the driver the same way, it doesn't have the same problem.

Well just because ignorance produced a positive result doesn't mean embrassing ignorance is the answer.
I know people that fix their cars by pounding a hammer on the hub cap when it won't start and swear it fixes the car, but in REALITY, it probably has LITTLE to do with with problems with the car.
As for your 'knowledge' of the Vista Driver 'timing' differences between XP and Vista, you really have no idea what you are talking about. And this is why I ask, why do you even respond to a thread like this, when you are not going to help the user and instead just go on your os-political agenda against Vista.
The Video driver model in Vista is far richer and even though there have been driver issues because it required NVidia and ATI to write NEW DRIVERS FROM SCRATCH, it doesn't mean that the XP driver model is better.
I really get tired of the non-legitimate Vista bashing from people that don't have a freaking clue about OS techonlogy, what issues people are facing and why they might be having problems.
-----------------------
As for the OP of this thread. The 9600 NVidia card has had problems with the last few set of drivers from NVidia that affects many games, and that is where you should start looking for your problem.
Go to www.laptopvideo2go.com (yes they have desktop drivers too), it is the best archive of Video drivers for NVidia based Cards.
With the 9600 Geforce, try going back to really old drivers, like the 178 series that first supported the 9600 or try the new generation of drivers in the 185.xx range.
You can also try the 182.50 drivers, as I have heard good things about them and fixing 9600 issues with games, and many users are also happy with the 185.68 drivers.
Be sure to uninstall the 'old' Nvidia drivers via the Control Panel before installing a new version, just in case a bad/old file has been left of the system.
If that doesn't address your issue, you may have to look beyond your Video card, and run the Vista RAM diagnostic tool and also look for hardware errors in your computer's configuration.
If this is a custom built computer, the person that assembled it could have the CPU voltage off, PCI clock set wrong, DRAM Freq. Voltage wrong, etc etc...
Vista is not your 'specific' problem, as 99.9% of Vista users have NO issues what so ever with City of Heroes or 99.9% of any other games out there. Statistics also show Vista to run faster than XP with 1-2GB of RAM, and is far more stable than XP, so don't buy into the myth that giving up Vista will fix your issues, especially if your hardware could be causing the problems and you need to get that addressed.
Some of the Vista myth crap reminds me of people when they were moving from Win3.1 to Win95 or Win9x to XP. They all complained that the new OS was junk, when they didn't realize how the new OS worked differently, and used aspects of their hardware the previous OS didn't that would make existing problems surface. For example things like a modem sharing an IRQ would work fine in Win3.1 or
Win95, but was architecturally forbidden in Win2k or XP, so when their modem wouldn't work, they blamed XP, instead of the fool that installed their modem card improperly in the first place...
The same is true of XP to Vista, Vista is using aspects of your computer XP never did, from low level ACPI and mainboard chipset features to even advanced features on your devices from DVD burners to sound cards. If there are errors or problems with the hardware or conflicts, Vista will complain, where XP doesn't even realize the hardware is there to complain about.
ACPI is one area that is very inconsistent on hardware, and was left in disarray because XP didn't use all the ACPI features, where Vista does and even expects them to work properly for Standby and Hibernate by invoking the hardware Sx states per specification.
Another direct Vista example is in CPU threading issues that Vista manages that XP didn't, and come to find out there are a few core problems in AMD and Intel CPU threading schedulers that Vista has to 'compensate' for because they don't work like they should and Intel and AMD didn't find these errors because of XP and other OSes ignorance to these advanced threading state features.
This is why Intel and AMD have RevA, B, C of their processors, as new devices and OSes find flaws in how they are working.
It is also why you find Vista 'patches' for specific hardware to 'work around' the errors, when it isn't MS responsibility, but they would rather address the issue for their customers than tell them the Intel xxx chip has a flaw, go yell at Intel. (And anyone that remembers the Pentium or Pentium II calcualtion bugs, will understand this, as the OS, again Windows at the time had to issue patches to specifically compensate for the ALU error on the CPU.)
Truly good luck to you, but look beyond Vista, starting with the drivers for your Video card checking your BIOS settings if it is a custom computer and then checking your hardware for failures.
PS Also don't be scared of moving to or using Windows7 when it comes out. There will be people complaining about ti too, even though most reviews right now are favorable.
It is the nature of the industry, as there is always someone's cousin's uncle delivery boy that swears that Vista blew up their house and that they can fix their car by pounding on the hubcap with a hammer...
And yes, I am an OS Engineer and Theorist professionally, not just a gamer that heard stories from a cousin's uncle.
Good Luck...
wow lol you really have no idea what you are talking about in my case. I troubleshooted this problem with support for over 4 months last summer, I tested everything I could, every possible fix that was out there. Every hotfix I could find using 3 different version of Vista. I went all the way to try 2 different PCi-E cards, removed all the ram except for 1 chip ( since some suggested it would work) and you know what.. the only way I got to play COH again was when I gave up and reinstalled XP. same computer, same parts, different OS. and I never crashed ever since..
I have no idea where you got your idea that I was against Vista... if it was just for me i'd be on Vista again but since I can't play the only game I actually play , well it will have to wait until a definite fix is found.
Zolth, Tease and many others can attest that I know what i'm talking about, I did more trouble shooting on this than you can possibly think. I tried to help everyone I could with this error. for some it worked with the hotfix but for others like me only a reinstall of XP fixed the issue. I never said it was the only way.. I said it was the only 100% sure way.

Not to mention the whole "downgrade to XP" to solve the problems. I have seen SEVERAL new systems of late in which there are NO XP drivers AT ALL!!!!!
To all of those thinking about moving their system from Vista to XP, a few words of wisdom here.
<ul type="square">[*]Check your OS version first. Microsoft will allow a downgrade from VIsta Business and Ultimate to XP Pro only. If you have Vista Home or Premium, you have to BUY a legal copy of XP to downgrade.[*]Check with the PC manufacturer for Drivers. As I have mentioned, there are some PCs and Laptops out there that have NO drivers for it whatsoever.[/list]

If you built your own PC from the Motherboard up, then going from Vista to XP might not be a bad thing. However, I have had a few "New" PCs and Laptops brought to me to go to XP from Vista and it turns out there are no XP drivers at all. I would encourage caution in saying a reinstallation with XP will fix anyone's problems 100% of the time.
I only rarely crash...very rarely. I have not run hot fixes...i've not messed with drivers. I do run vista..I simply run in windowed mode. Works for me. I don't have even the tiny bit of knowledge people here do...but I had trouble when I switched to vista..I tried everything..then untried it. I switched to windowed mode by chance and haven't had trouble since. I don't know if it was related at all or not..but if its something you've not tried...might be worth a shot. It sounds like you know what you're talking about though and have likely tried a lot more than I did.

Same here: I have Vista. I run the game in admin mode and maximized widowed mode and no problems with crashing repeatedly... every once in a while, yes but not with any regularity.
ya, i also have to run it in admin mode...and i have to run vent in admin mode if i'm running cox or my press to talk button won't pick up...fyi
shucks... haven't tried vent with this comp... (new laptop) good to know
Well, not sure what did it, but I haven't had a crash in three days.
I went back and (attempted) to roll back my driver to the third on the list on the guide for solving this. It started giving me some weird error about using nvidia installer for a 32 bit system on a 64 bit system, and then it immediately gave another error about it not being a 64 bit system so it couldnt continue or something. It did this for two seperate drivers - even though the process worked fine the first two times I did it. It eventually let me install the second driver on the list again without any problems.
I installed the hotfix (again) and am doing the windowed-maximized mode thing. I also started running it in admin mode.
Something took affect.
Thanks for all the help everyone! It feels nice to be able to play again without crashing every 2 seconds.
(I just hope karma doesn't take effect and the problem starts again now that I've posted this).
So maybe Admin mode has something to do with it? I running in windowed mode. My Comp/Game is in sync with the viewing stats. nvlddmkm is a pain in the rash! Make sure the Side bar is off too though! I did notice that that seemed to help the frequency of it happening.
I downloaded the hotfix (twice in an attempt to see if I did something wrong the first time). It downloaded and unzipped fine but the game still randomly locks up on me with "Not Responding".
The game worked fine on my old computer so I can only assume it's related to this vista issue since the symptoms match up. Any help?
Sorry if I wasn't supposed to create a new thread, but I've seen other people told to create a separate thread when they were still having problems in the vista issue thread.
