This is on Broadband, not Dialup.

I have opted to download this for the reactivation weekend for the fifth year anniversary.

Like the poster who said it's going 8.7k/sec sloooow, I, too am having this problem. I have quit (after all night/479mb of 2.5 gigs) just to see if the next time I connected it went faster. It did not. And it started over at 0 (guess I don't need to worry about piggs files being cached >.<

I live in the middle of nowhere, I AM on broadband, and I've checked my speeds, my connection is just fine. I can download other things at maximum speed just fine. So what to do? No apple stores within 250 miles of me.

I was out of town last weekend and grabbed a copy of the architect edition at Best Buy for 19.99. It has the Mac client on it and I figure it's a good backup medium in lieu of downloading it again.

Is it supposed to go through a massive "fixing files" on the updater when you first start it? That's what mine did and the estimated time was absurd.

Yes, the install process takes quite some time -- it not only has to install the game, it also has to make every change to the game that they've released since whatever snapshot the installer was built from. That can be quite a lot. For me it took something like an hour. Once you've finished, though, it shouldn't ever have to do that again (unless you leave yourself logged out for months and years at a time); most of the time it starts up quickly, occasionally it takes a few minutes to apply a patch, and rarely it takes a bit longer to install a whole new issue.

This isn't the updating process I'm talking about - it's not patching or anything; it's, according to the updater, "fixing files" which is not something it ever, and the timer on it is something like 80 hours.

OK, I'm kinda confused. I have never owned a Mac before. I bought one today because I'd been wanting one. I have paid for the Mac Client, since I bought the $20 digital deal that had the mac client and a month of play and some costume packs. I bought that back when it came out and applied it to my account.

After reading this guide, I'm still not sure where to get the Mac Native client. One person said it was something like ftp://client.coh.com/US/ but someone else said that was for a beta client. So, which is it?

I also see something about parallels and boot camp and one sucks but the other requires rebooting into windows. I dont even know what those apps are. I'm normally a Windows guy, but I dont intend to partition or run anything else.

Is there a native mac client? Where is it? Is it going to suck without "Parallels" or "Boot Camp" whatever those are? Is it at the ftp://client.coh.com/US/ site? Is that the beta client or the real live server client? I am so confused.

I dont even know where my applications folder is on my new iMac yet, or what a DMG file is.

Please help?

Thanks,

Lewis

Well, I went out and bought the AE edition at Best Buy and it installed and patched fine. It works like a champ.

The client from FTP works fine too. Sorry if this answer could have saved you some money earlier.

Actually, the money works out the same. I was already intending to buy the AE Edition in digital form. After all, you get a month as part of the deal, which is about $15, and you get a costume pack for the difference ($5). That's cheaper than buying a month ($15) and the costume pack separately ($10).

So, buying the AE Edition was the same thing, really, except I got a hard copy of a more recent save point than my day 0 copy, AND I got the mac client.

Therefore, it's all good!

Thanks,

Lewis

"Loading Bind Files

The City of Heroes Mac client has a "D" drive mapped to the location of your current Home folder on the Mac. Placing your bind file there will allow you to load it directly from inside the game:

1. Place a bind file, such as "binds.txt", in your Home folder.

2. In-game, type "/bindloadfile d:/binds.txt" and press Return.

3. Your binds are now available!"

Hello,

I can not find the Home Folder or the D: drive; are they listed or titled as something else in the Mac?

I did the select 'Show packaged contents' from the COH icon in the apps folder - then to content - resources - transgaming. I tried to do my binds from the c_drive folder with no success. I have tried further to find a the file you mentioned about with also no success.

Thx.

I was wondering, since one can duplicate the City of Heroes package file and run two instances of the game, why can't I set resolution sizes independently for each instance?

I've copies the City of Heroes file in my Applications folder and renamed the copy City of Heroes Small. I launched it, set the resolution size I wanted, restarted, and it was fine. But when I went to launch the regular City of Heroes application file, it was the same resolution I had just set for the Small version.

Is there any way I can make this work? I realize it may sound very odd, but it's important to me that I can do this, and so far I'm not seeing how I can.

You can! But you have to edit one of the applications' info.plist files.

I recommend you install Apple's Xcode developer tools to do this, as it makes it easier to edit .plist files.

Use Show Package Contents on the application, then open Contents. The info.plist there is the one you want to edit.

The tag you want is called PrefsFolderName, and is usually set to "City Of Heroes". Change that on your 2nd client, and then launch it - voila, two separate application settings!

Yay! Excellent! That worked wonderfully. Now I can run one instance on my huge external monitor and a separate one on my small laptop screen (though not at the same time, I just needed them to match the screen resolutions of each monitor).

Is the "Home" folder the little house icon with the user's name next to it (in the Finder)?

Except for the fact that my Best Hover/Fly Bind Ever doesn't work. Whenever I try it, I get the pink text:

Can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong? Thanks.

Doesn't it need to be a backslash? When I just type "/bind_load_file d:\powers.txt", the file loads fine. It's just the commands in the files themselves that don't work.

In fact, even when I remove the "bind_load_file" part of the command, I still get an error. I can enter any command I want into the client directly and get the result I want, but when the client tries to read the exact same command from a bind file, it generates an error.
