Scanner help

After listening to a few of you on here I've decided to get my own 11 x 17 scanner. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find "cheaper" ones. And what the difference between different DPI are and can I control the DPI?

Weird questions I know, but I have no idea when it comes to anything you plug into the wall!

Thanks!

DPI is (IIRC) Dots per Inch.

The more DPI, the better the detail it will scan.

If you go for a cheaper one, be prepared to hate it intensely. My scanner is on the cheaper side (had it for YEARS, long before I started putting up artwork). It really butchers my work and no amount of Photoshop tweaking ever gets my traditional medium stuff to look like it does in person after it goes through my scanner.

you should be able to. DPI is essentially the resolution of the scan. It will be translated into a bigger pixel map with bigger DPI settings. As for cheaper ones... I wouldn't go for. I've not boughten a good scanner for under $50. One that I bought for $40 from some company(probably compaq or something crap) doesn't work cause the drivers it comes with aren't actually compatible with the scanner. even then, supposedly the thing shuts off for no reason.

In all the scanner i've used, I'ld go with something from Epson. They've had a good "tilt" between quality, price, and utility. The "all in one" scanner from them cost me $90, but it can print CDs, Paper, photo copy, photo print, has a canvas mode, and it does all these things superbly. comes with some "fluff" software however.

An A3 scanner for 90 bucks? .... link please, because ... nowai. Normally 11x17 scanners go for over 400 in stores when you can even find them. I got mine online for 150ish, and it's good enough that I don't mind having to clean up the b/w (it does excellent color, but black lines not so well).

it's a PHOTO RX595. it actually costs $130(I must have gotten it on sale at the londonDrugs cause it cost me about $100. er $94.99). And it actually has a scan size of 9"x12", so my mistake. D:

... carry on

I need a new scanner as well. I'd love an 11"x17", but there is no way I can currently afford one. Maybe with the tax refund. We'll see how the economy is and how much we need to pay on bills to pay everything down.

My current scanner doesn't even have the WinXP drivers. In order to get them I have to pay more money than the scanner is currently worth (being about seven or eight years old) to get them, which is ludicrous.

That is ONE thing to check when looking at scanners. Look over the company website, see where they have the drivers for upgrades to OSs, and see if they charge for it or not.

I'm really looking for something under $200 and is 11 x 17 (no printer oar anything else needed), and of course does a pretty good job. When I do a search I'm only finding scanners that are $500 and up!

Yeah, tabloid-size scanners have traditionally never been cheap compared to letter-size scanners. I did find one that matches your price range, but I've not used this brand to be able to rate the performance.

The Web vendor is a reputable source, so you can feel safe if you decide to order it from them. I've had no problems any time I've ordered from them in the last 15 years.
