Creative Funk

Thanks for that warning about Clone Wars. I was kinda tempted.

And good luck to you getting your creative groove back. I too know the feeling all too well. I have a personal project that I really want to work on and get done and I just can't get into it at all.

I don't understand why they revisited the Clone Wars. Blerg.

Hey Todd, I find if I hit a funk - writing in my case - then I turn to some of the old PnP RPG material and create new characters (the Fuzion LifePath is a blast to use) or scan through the forums of SuperiorPics.com to see which tasty actress or actor would fulfill the boots of my heroes and villains if they were to be in my own movie

*shrugs* Pepsiman enjoyed Clone Wars, so who knows, that's gets a hmm might be interesting enough to go see in my book. I'll prolly wait and Netflix it, I'm a bit curious to at least decide about it for myself.

this... is both fun and agonizing at the same time. I did this after getting the idea after seeing your char sheets a long time ago Comrade, and finally decided to do it for sure when Bobby mentioned it helps artists picture ones character more. It's fun when you find the people that fit your characters, but to not see them immediately looking liek them is blah.,. but that's life I guess, be happy with what ya got I suppose heh

So wait if I lower my brain matter for an afternoon, will I enjoy it then? My wife has never seen any SW movies and knows next to nothing about it, would she like it? She keeps threatening to actually watch one "for" me...

Also I forgot to mention, if you're a predominantly digital heavy artist, I'd suggest going back to basics and get some good card stock, a mechanical pencil and a kneaded eraser - and go to town... OR if you're a traditional artist, redraw something from your past, finish a sketch into a finished piece or rework something you've done again... often you will be at a point where you can add to older pieces, just because as artists we constantly evolve from the process of doing more and more work... look at Gil's latest work since his return, it dwarfs his previous work I dare say...

I've been in a creative funk for... going on eight years now. I've done a few things here and there, and think I might be pulling out of it, then I get slammed harder.

Hopefully your problem isn't nearly as bad as mine.

Very interesting idea. I'll give that a shot as well.

So, wait!

I'm not totally crazy for doing most of my (poor) sketches with a mechanical pencil, over more traditional methods?

That's usually my big problem.. I always feel so weird using my default tool (The all-holy Engineering/Mechanical Pencil) for this kind of stuff. I sort of realize in my head the trade-offs (not really sharpening vs. line variety), but I wasn't sure if I was missing something or not by not going 'traditional' (because I don't have the desk space/patience for a proper sharpener).

Hmm. I may have to start goofing around again. <_<

(This post may be a tangent. Therefore, attached to this post is a plate of doughnuts [Dunkin's, because Krispy Kreme just doesn't cut it!] and a pot of coffee.)

Feh. Get some Tim Horton's donuts in here, and I'll be tempted.

As for creative funks... sometimes you just have to sit down and do it. I've been struggling with a piece of writing for the last couple of weeks, and tonight I sat down and managed to force out a paragraph. Then I looked at the clock and it was six hours later and I'd completed a chapter (around three thousand words to finish off what I'd already written) >.>

Sometimes, that's all that'll do it.

Of course, other times, you'll feel like you were beating your head against a brick wall for hours, but still...

Yeah 8Baller, check out these video tutorials by Steven Sanchez on DA.

He's got a great style, and his methods actually work, I love sketching on card stock now. I use to do it at my table top D&D game on index cards, who knew I was on the right track...

As for Donuts:

Deli Deep Fried - plain, cannot be beat...
HOT off the conveyor belt Krispie Kreme, but only if HOT
Tim Horton's Maple Frosted (thankfully I am in Canada)
Dunkin Donuts, but only if yer near death...

Sometimes you really do have to just sit down and bang it out. I've been trapped in writer's block for months, have several stories careening around in my head, but I'm just paralyzed that they won't be as good on the page as they are in my mind. But I know I'm going to have to start typing *some*thing and see what happens. Bleah. When it's rollin' all is beautiful and good with the world, when it isn't it's like shoving through sludge. Oy.

Donuts? Shipley hot melty lemon-filled *or* chocolate filled all the way, baby. I am sorry to say the one time I visited Canada I never made it to Tim Hortons (though I wanted to).

this. it's like this and a blend of trying to get your car started, until then yer jsut stuck and ain't going anyway where til ya zoom off.

Krispy's, Tims, Dunkins and Winchell's are all the same in my book. But then again I have sentimental memories that go along with eatin somethin from each, especially munchkins.

Tim "Talin" Collier, the Reapermini staff artist, uses what I use: The almighty disposable mechanical pencil. One of his dA pages.

So use your mechanical proudly. I like not having to stop and sharpen every few minutes. If you want line variation, you can always have an old wooden one standing by.
