Lobster's Guide to Crabbing
You ever try using the second build slot to try out a melee crab? I'm building one right now from scratch and was wondering if anyone else had dabbled in it.
Anyone know why these builds wont open up in coh planner?
Conversion to binary failed at the 'decodebytes' stage. The data may be corrupt or incomplete.
Thats the message I get.
Ive tried to open a few of the builds you posted its not working. Says data may be corrupted and I noticed smiley icons popping up in the info your supposed to copy and past to Mid's.

Yeah... I can see that one of my cut and pastes (maybe last time I fixed the formatting after one of the forum changes?) must have grabbed a bunch of <, & kind of things. I can see how to auto clean most of them, but there's still one I haven't found yet. Joys of gibberish.
[edit: I just checked my old build files, and I can't find these, they must have been done on another machine. So, I'll have to re-input them. If anyone happens to beat me to it and wants to post the code, I'd be glad to edit that back into the original posts

Lobby! I've been using your "UBER +recharge build" as the light at the end of my tunnel for 44 levels, but I'm wondering, would I be able to squeeze pool assault and possibly maneuvers in there and not mess everything up? What if I got rid of Combat jumping and super jump? I don't need the travel powers. Please help. Also would it be worth it in your opinion?
Lobster please update your builds! I want my perma pets/haste poor maneuvers/assault

*CJ holds a LotG+rech, but you could stick that in pool maneuvers as well. You would not have any slots for it though, unless you maybe wanted to pull 1 acc out of spiderlings & 1 dmg out of reinforcements.
You *can* shave off at least 15% or so recharge and still have perma hasten and pets... so just use that at your discretion. Like you could cut out serum entirely and replace that with a maneuvers 5 slotted with Red Fortune. Or you could the slots out Shatter Armor and put them elsewhere. This build was really just a 'go nuts on recharge' build to give you a place to start. Just experiment with removing a set bonus or two and see where that leaves you.

Does anyone have a build using the new mids with inherrent stamina. Im tryin to get a uber crab build to work towards. I really enjoyed the crab solo'in the pylon.
Just a quick thanks to you lobby for this. My Crab sat at lvl 46 for ages because I just couldn't get the motivation to play him solo. I'd heard all these stories of Crabs being teh aw3s0m3, but just wasn't getting it. Until I respecced into the build that you're using. At first, I was dubious because there was no self heal. Then I played it and realised, you don't NEED to heal if the mobs hardly hit you anyway!
Now I'm absolutely loving it. Sensibly priced IO sets, insane amounts of +DEF from the toggles and pet damage, and playing it seems to be a sea of orange numbers.
I've been playing through the RWZ arcs, and got to the second or third Dark Watcher one. Rounded a corner, into a room with 3 very closely packed spawns of Nems, and I was expecting a vengeance based insta death.. but no.. survived with half a health bar and a purple insp, and the whole lot mown down in about 30-40 seconds. Just. Awesome. Most fun I've had with a toon on this game for a VERY long time.
Thanks again!

Lobby! I'm literally one Ragnarok away from perma hasten! I couldn't have done it without you I have almost achieved our dream build! just 300mill to go.
Any thoughts on this build post-I19 with inherent fitness?
Lobster:
I have to say of all the guides posted on the forums, I think yours is by far the best. Strait and to the point, with lots of advise and including sets. I did some research today, and thought I would post my results on your guide, since I respect it so, and others looking at it might find this interesting:
-----
Of all my toons, the only one that Im having trouble with alpha slot decision is my crab. Crabs have so many different abilities that its hard to figure out what to slot. I have my IO sets built to maximize positional defenses. After much review, heres what I came up with
-Cardiac: Useful if you took leadership pool powers. Pick this and never run out of endurance.
-Musculature: Most versatile of the slots
gives you lots more damage while improving debuffs and a bit more endurance
-Nerve: useless
-Spiritual: Useful if you are a mastermind-crab, wanting perma-pets. Otherwise, skip.
I would highly recommend the musculature set for any crab. The reasons why are listed below, with supporting numbers. Note that Im looking at the final level of the alpha slot, since I like to plan ahead..
=============================
Spiritual:
The Spiritual line doesnt really entice me much. I didnt slot my crab for recharge, and didnt take hasten. The only powers that I have that arent up as often as Id like them are my pets and serum (maybe omega, but meh). I didnt go for perma-pets, I slotted to max out his survivability. Other bonuses this set provides are healing (for serum and health), Disorient and slow (useless for you), jump, and To Hit Buff (which would up your Tactical Training: Leadership and Aim).
=============================
Nerve:
Accuracy isnt too important to me, I already have tactical offensive and Combat training: tactics, as well as set bonuses. Taunt, confuse, and fly are useless to me, as is hold. So really this would be for more defense
which is what Ive been slotting him for. The defense bonus is 20%, so with the ED mod, well call that 13.3%, roughly (the more exact number are below). Important to remember here is that we arent getting 13-20% base, but instead a 13% increase to our powers. I did some math, and came up with numbers, based on what was currently slotted:
Combat Training : Def--- BASE: 7.5% to ranged --- Enhanced: 11.8% --- With alpha: 12.8% (+1%)
Combat Jumping ---BASE: 2.5% to all ---Enhanced 2.8% ---With Alpha: 3 (+0.2%)
Tactical Training : Maneuvers --- 10% to all ---Enhanced: 15.75% --- With Alpha: 17.2% (+1.37%)
Weave --- BASE: 5% to all --- Enhanced : 7.8% --- With Alpha: 8.29 (+.48%)
So, it total, 2% increase to all defense, 1% increase to ranged defense. Pretty tiny. If I had maneuvers (and I wish I did), we would see a similar maybe +0.3 defense to all in here.
=================
Cardiac:
The main buff of this set is end reduction. This would be useful on many crab builds, especially those with the leadership power pool. I find I dont often run out of END, but when theres enemies around that drain it, it can be rough. Also note that most characters dont max their end redux on most powers
and as a result, Enhancement Diversification is less pronounced
.youll get more use out of these bonuses. Other things in this set are range (useful for a crab, we have 1-3 wonderful cones
but not necessarily needed), fear (useless to you), sleep (also useless), and resist. The resist is the most tempting of the secondary abilities
so lets again look at the numbers.
Crab Spider: 3% -> 3.6% S/L, 2%->2.4% PSI
Tough: BASE: 15% to S/L ---Enhanced 21% --- With Alpha: 23.9% (+2.9% to S/L)
Fortitude: BASE: 15% S/L, 25% E/N/C/F/T---Enhanced: 23.6% and 39.4%---With Alpha: 25% and 43% (+1.4% S/L, +3.6% to E/N/C/F/T)
Total Resist:
S/L from 47.6% to 55.2% (+5%)
Psi from 2% to 2.4% (+0.4%)
E/N/F/C/T 39.3% to 42.95% (+4%)
Again, the numbers look sad
though a bit better then the defense numbers. If you had taken wolf spider armor, you would get some other petty number. Also, my tough isnt maxed on resist in my build, so you could get a few more % out of that.
===============================
Musculature:
Lastly is the damage increase set. Crabs are AoE masters
we do tons of damage, and pull lots of agro (thats why I tried to max my defense). Having more damage is great, and we would actually have two different viable options with this set, both core paragon and radial paragon have their uses. Core would give more overall damage (roughly +32.35% compared to +23.65%), while Radial also gives end mod, run speed, and to hit deduff
both sets also have defense debuff and immobilize. Almost all of our attacks have a defense component to them, which I often forget, so this buff is useful. The runspeed will unfortunately effect mental training, swift, and sprint. My crab took Darkest Night from the soul mastery set, which has ToHit to it, but like the resist and defense powers, the bonus provided from the alpha slot would be quite low on this. Since I'm slotted for max defense, having a stronger to hit debuff is quite useful. Worth looking at, however, is the end mod modifier. I assume this effects stamina, which two slotted with IOs would look like this:
Stamina: BASE: +0.44 End/s---enhanced: +0.8 End/s---with Alpha +0.93 End/s (+0.13 end/s)
(3 slotting it would provide an enhanced +0.857 End/s ---Alpha +0.97 End/s. Also having the accolades increases this somewhat)
Yes, this is way less the benefit you would the Cardiac End Redux
but it is something.
======================
@Santakid: Thanks for the kind words and the great overview on alphas. Amusingly, I'm going the opposite route from you & went with the spiritual. It helps shore up my aoes that have less recharge due to set slotting.... and with PETS of course. Yes, I'm currently running an mm-centric build.
@drugfree boy & @maxtsorm: Free stamina makes it that much easier to fit in weave for the defense builds... I'll try and put up an updated take on the defense build when I can.
@steelrat: That's what I love to hear, and why I put all the effort I did into these guides! Crabs can be really great on a budget (and stupid-good with $$, of course).
@icemanstryketh: Awesome! Glad to know I helped out! I've updated some of the builds where I had time - at least enough for you to load them into the planner. I'll try and do some actual updates soon.

This build lacks hasten - but there's a free slot (stored in health) that you could use to work in hasten via removing the KB prot io from Crab Spider Armor - I have the build with mag 12 kb prot - although I generally run with only mag 4, I've heard some folks swear by 12, so there it is as an option.
Without hasten you don't get perma Serum in this build, but I think it's up enough (~30s downtime), and I threw Entropic Chaos's (instead of Decimations) in Channelgun & Longfang for the occasional heal - I haven't tested this aspect yet, but I'm thinking it will be fun and about all that's needed with this kind of defense.
I also threw Frenzy in because a) I love the look of the attack and b) you'll be in the thick of things more - even if only to use Shatter Armor - which you absolutely should (contributing a perma -20% res debuff is great) c) the numbers (102 base dmg/20 rech/8 size are comparable to the "big gun" pbaoe - Foot Stomp (63 base [NO RAGE]/20 rech/15 size on tanks). The main area where it's lacking - and I've pointed this out before, is the pbaoe size. But still, in a TF setting (or running at 1-4/x8) you'll hit "enough" targets with it.
I think any of the alpha slots EXCEPT +accuracy would go great with this build.

I am looking at your "4.0.4" build and WANT.
Question: With inherent fitness now, I was looking to pick up Aim, Arm Lash and Frenzy, but now I'm torn. You don't have the kick/tough/weave in that build and it seems to have decent defense- would you go that path now that the three fitness powers are free?
I'm not really interested in a gazillion pets, though plan to take the disruptors for help with bosses. (tempted to eventually drop 4 Soulbound Allegiance into it for the set bonuses.)
What I want is to be the walking AOE God of Death, and pile the corpses of my enemies at my feet. (okay, a few feet in front of my feet. Wouldn't want them to actually *touch* my august personage.)
I want to try Omega Maneuver, because I've never seen it. I have no idea how to slot it, though.
Help me be the crab that I can be!

The animation time on Suppression will keep you from putting out the kind of AOE that blasters can BUT of course you'll be able to survive much more than any blaster, so who cares, right?

Your build is a bit short on recharge. I don't think you need 6 aoe attacks... plus the weapon redraw on the gun attacks got old for me, so I dropped it down to just the crab attacks + patrons. If you really want the gun attacks, I can't give you much input from that angle BUT you may be better off going the huntsman/bane route. Also, the kb from frag grenade doesn't play well with the cones, another reason I dropped it. With hasten (and maybe spiritual) I think you can get a solid aoe chain with just 4 attacks, leaving you lots of free slots. Except for venom, they all have 2s+ animation times.
It's really too bad you can't take Arctic instead of Sharks. It might be worth taking sharks & leaving it empty so you can take Arctic. It gives you another damage type (cold) & some decent debuffing.
If you don't want pets, drop reinforcements for hasten. Throw spiritual on top of that. That makes the build an end-eating machine, so you'll want Miracle & Numina in health, as well as the 2 end + perf shifter proc in stamina. If you have both +5 end accolades, you can probably get by on less, but I like a slight bit of overkill.
Omega maneuver is lots of fun, but the damage is bleh. It's mostly just there for amusement - on trial teams pretty much every spawn will be dead before it explodes (except during the boss fights, sometimes).
With all that aoe, you'll never really have a good time to use arm lash, or frenzy. However, you have the slots to take both if you drop Burst & Frag & consider my other advice.
Get another slot in CJ for a lotg proc, or swap it for the def/end.
You can put a kb prot io in tough if you're not going to slot & run it.
Those are my thoughts for the moment, hope they help!

Love the MasterCrab build, very impressive and can't wait to make one.
One question though: It is my understanding that Gloom from Soul Mastery is one of the best pool single target attacks in the game. It is also my understanding that single target damage is the Crab's main weakness. Gloom also has the advantage of being ranged, and this way all of your crab's attacks will be ranged.
Is there a particular reason for picking Mace over Soul?

Shatter Armor is really good - in AV fights it's nice to have that extra debuff on there perma.
That being said, I wouldn't say Mace is *better* than Soul, it's just what I wanted. If you want Gloom, go for it.

Lobster, I'm loving the heck out of your guides. The Fortunata one has gotten me the psychic death-dealer I've long hankered for, and now it's crab time.
What would you recommend in the way of a relatively cheap build that emphasizes defense and AOE over pets? Is that the Mastercrab sort of thing you already posted, or would there be other considerations?

I just rolled my first Crab last night, and am really enjoying it. It might even be enough fun to overlook the goofy backpack - WOW! Who knew!?
Anyway, have really enjoyed this thread, and have more than a full page of notes, not including the suggested builds! (I typically use a sticky note for most guidelines)
But I do have a crab-n00b question: is there any reason I shouldn't take hover? Are there any powers that won't work if you're not on the ground? Or do I never see hovering Crabs because, well, spiders don't fly, the crabby backpack looks even sillier, and everyone knows hovering is for sissies?
I enjoy the better vantage point of being above the fray with a ranged attacker. My Crab is dressed in pink, so the sissy thing has already occurred.
Thanks again for the great guide!

I think it is because Crabs have alot of PBAoE and cones and those work best on the ground.
Ok, thank you so much for the quick response!
Crabs only have one pbaoe, and it's a power I recommend skipping, unless you really want it.

Just manually edit the text to remove the smileys and add back in the colon and whatever that makes them... it should fix your issues.
It might also help to turn off the code for smileys, and then quote the post that contains the code and copy it from the quote, instead of the original message.
Also, glad to see people are still getting use out of this and wow, I am surprised there weren't any other Crab guides linked from the VEAT forum guide thread link.
