Question on PNG transparency
I had this same problem with fireworks(happens to be an actual web design/graphic program) You have to export them as a GIF file and allow alpha transparency, then it shouldn't bring the background up. Of course there could be graphic coding issues with the site period, like flash based websites that do this to some computers

I'm almost positive there's a slightly different way to do this in CS3, but the old way to unlock a background layer was to double-click it and change its name (weird, I know). Then it becomes a floating background and you should be able to use the transparency slider or remove it completely.
Hope that helps a little bit. If not, sorry =/
Pure HTML/CSS. I'll try going from png to gif and back, see if that solves it. Hope the image doesn't lose much fidelity.
And if that above solved it, then I totally misunderstood what you meant =P
Nope, I ended up using your method actually! And then manually erasing all the whitespace pixel by pixel, that sucked. But thanks for your help!
I'm confused, the image you have is ON a white, and you just want to remove it? IF you can select all the white, press Control + X in order to just erase all the white...
Edit: and yes the layer has to be clicked in order to alter the white.
Yeah LadyJ, it wasn't that hard once I got told how to change the background layer into a real layer. But I'm not really an artist, so I didn't trust my fine motor control enough to not cut into the images jankily at all. But with enough zooming, everything turned out just fine.
This is one of the easiest operations in PS;
1 - Copy the art to a new layer.
2 - Turn the background OFF so so it's not visible by clicking the little 'eye' icon next to the background layer
3 - Erase what you don't want on the layer with the art on it.
4 - Save as PNG. Photoshop automatically merges all the layers and knows that PNGs need to preserve what was not visible.
I think that was the original poster's problem: the background layer.
The other thing they could do is copy the art to a new layer (drag the image to the new layer icon), and delete the background layer after erasing what they don't want. Then saving as PNG

FTW! I always create a new .PSD file from the source material first (for safety) before anything else. Then:
"Layer Menu... New... Create New Layer from Background... Select/Erase/Del unwanted material (make sure that checkerboard is clean)... Size and season to taste... Save As .PNG"

Hey guys,
I'm trying to make some png files I have from screenshot mashups work for the fansite I'm building, but I can't get the white background to stop being opaque. I'm using photoshop CS 3, and the only place I've found to mess with transparency is in the "save for web and devices" option - and nothing I'm doing is working. Can somebody help me out?
