Discussion: Character Transfer, Rename and Names

You would think after years of getting no help from staff. Paying yearly for a great game but No help from staff. That they would make something free like hmmm instead of wentworths why not give us a FREE options to transfer influence salvage and heck even enhancements from character to character.. Not the whole character. Not only are we getting ripped off for paying for a replies like this "We apologize, we are not able to help you at this time." but we also have to pay 10 dollars to change a Name?!?!? Dose anyone else find this extremely strange? I think your company and your staff needs to be reevaluated. Do you think we charge you 100 for cup of coffee in the hospital? That is exactly what it is like.

You're right. Maybe server transfers, etc, should be ... oh ... what does WoW charge? SEVENTY FIVE dollars, isn't it? Or was that EQ or EQ2?

Stop complaining, ten bucks is MUCH cheaper than the industry average.

Last time I transferred a character in WoW it was $25.

Admittedly, this was months ago, so I checked again. Yep, still $25.

That's still more than twice what it is here, but nowhere near $75.

If you notice, he then goes and says "Or was that EQ or EQ2?".

For a full transfer, items and all, when I played EQ it was about 70 USD.

Tuesday i did three transfers. All three went through just fine.
Then i tried to use my credit card yesterday and it would not work turns out the bank flagged these as Fruad. After some (fun dealings with the credit card company) reading it sounds lile I am not the first one to have a problem like this and I will not be doing any more transfers or renames till I have more confidence in the billing system.

Hi ArchLight,

I posted about the fraud prevention issue here.

Keep in mind that different banks and financial institutions will react differently as they attempt to keep what they see as "high risk" transactions, like repeated low dollar amount sales, from becoming problematic.

I thought I saw a post from Ex on this but now can't find it.

I went to do a transfer today and was told I had 'reached my monthly cap. *boggle* You don't want my money..?

whats the cap? and how I do I get around it?

I found in account management where is says there is a $100 limit.
Is there no way to raise that? Thats $100 from when?

If I spent $20 of the 100 say on Sept 8th, on Oct 9th does $20 free up?

Yes. Look in your billing area - you should be able to set a higher or lower limit there (max of 250, IIRC)

thanks I found it, its kinda hidden. You have to click to change your card, and then re-input your card with a new limit.

That seems like an entirely un-helpful attitude. This is a thread *specifically* for the discussion of these features. People are entitled to hold their opinions about whether or not they, as paying subscribers to the game, feel it's reasonable for NCSoft to charge players to transfer characters or rename them.

Different people will have different opinions about it. I think for a simple rename (seriously, how hard could it *possibly* be to develop the code to rename a character? The hardest part about it would be doing things like updating other players' friends/ignore lists - and they have had character renaming since the game launched - just only GM's could use it previously).

Personally, I think re-names ought to be free (though limited so players aren't constantly changing their names). Transfers is a bit more complicated (though it still shouldn't be the hardest thing in the world to develop the automated system to do that). As I previously mentioned, I would be comfortable with a $2.99 price. Other's might be comfortable with another price.

I also personally feel that comparing CoX to other MMOS is a bit silly, since they all charge outrageous fees for *copying digital data*. Sure CoX might be the cheapest, but I feel that at the prices charged, it's pretty much a scam for all MMOs.

It's like the telephone company charging $2-3 for a ringtone that is a 20 second clip from a 3.5 minute song you can buy for $1. Sure, they have the legal right to do it, but I as a consumer will not pay that price. Other consumers will. It's up to the company to decide whether the price they are charging is generating optimal revenue. Me telling them what I am willing to pay is actually pretty valuable info for them.

Elijah, it comes down to this: if the fee is too high, vote with your wallet. If you must, politely voice your dislike for the fee. Don't, however, accuse the company of being greedy, unreasonable, or any number of other less than salutory epithets typically levelled over this issue.

EDIT: not that I'm suggesting that's what you've said - in retrospect, it might appear as such. But over the past few months, ever since we've known what the price was going to be, there are those who have said as much ... and said it in as many words. ^_^

If I moved a toon to Virtue from Liberty and decided to go back to Liberty, can I pay for another transfer to go back to Liberty?

Posted

I see no reason why not - you're paying for each move, they shouldn't care which character you're paying to move, either time.

What if one has a character which was created in capital letters and now one wants to keep the name but correct their mistake. Will that cost $20? Is there any way around this?

I believe you can make that change with a singe $10 purchase.

The game doesn't care about title case, if you try to rename and it is only a case sensitive change, you will be told that the name is already taken. I accidentally made my global @Gel and it should have been @GEL, I tried to do a rename and got the name already taken response.

That's global. Global can be changed only once (except for the times we had a database corruption and were allowed a new chance to rename); also, it may be that Global won't allow a "change" based on capitalization change alone... However, the name change feature for *characters* in the character selection screen will allow a name change based solely on a change of capitalization (for a $10 fee). Test it out on Test first where name changes are free.

When paying for a character name change, an additional Global ID change should be given with the purchase.

Agreed.

Now, the option to buy a Global Name Change token by itself would be an idea I could get behind. But as an added freebie? No, sorry, I can't really get behind that.
