A modern take on Soul Train

You know that strange behavior LJ's compy was doing?

Well apparently I got him pointed in the right direction (well, away from 'virus' and toward 'hardware') and in exchange, he did this:

Soul Train, 2007 - cos we all know Halle Berry'd not go for no poofy afro!

Thanks so much, LJ!

"City of Heroes. April 27, 2004 - August 31, 2012. Obliterated not with a weapon of mass destruction, not by an all-powerful supervillain... but by a cold-hearted and cowardly corporate suck-up."

I could add the fro if you want?

The face is very well done. High five for that.

Unfortunantly, there are some problems with the rest.

First of all, her sholders are incredibly broad. Ridiculously broad even. Her body in general is much too big for the head.

Also, the head and the body seem to be done in different styles. The head is very detailed and drawn with thin lines. The rest of the body, however, is made up of thicker lines and is less detailed than the head.

But seriously, the head alone is amazing.

The shoulders are broad because I think superhero women should have broad shoulders. I may have gone too far, but I try not to draw women with small rounded shoulders, as that doesn't appeal to my aesthetic.

As for the head being small, well I draw on a 17 inch screen, usually I step back more, and size the image down, adjusting the head then, in this case I thought it was fine.

The body and face are the same style, done with the same brush tool. I just don't put as many lines on the body, as I usually color these, and it's redundant to me.

The thicker lines are there for overall shape emphasis.

By the way: Unfortunately has 2 n's and an e in it, and shoulders has a u... but the rest of your review was wonderful.

The head is definitely a little bit on the small side, and the neck seems a tad thin, but aside from that it's fantastic, I didn't actually read Soul_Train's post before looking at the image and I instantly recognised it as Halle Berry.

Well done!

I'm gonna start labeling my posts with "No critiques"... or perhaps people with manners only. (not you Zikar, at least your post was 99% nice)

Yeah but you're on the giving side, assuming that your intention is helpful, wanted, or even expected... I'm on the receiving side, posting a 30 minute doodle for a friend who I hope to make happy, who was happy with it... I'm not showing work so anybody and his 17yr old can pull something from their incredible proportional powers to make me see the light?

At the least, preface an undesirable comment with a modicum of humility, grace or class. But yes this is the internet, so I can't expect that. Again, this is not personally directed at you Zikar...

oh and Thanks Kilo , I don't know about betterer, but it's done as far as I'm concerned. It was done the first time too.

I actually prefer the 'fro... but the art is fantastic on this

The deal with critiques is... when they're not needed, they're REALLY not desired. This piece is the result of an art trade and both parties are happy. That being the case, people should view the piece and simply enjoy it. There's a time and place for constructive criticism, and since the art was presented as a compelte piece, this isn't the time or place.

LJ is a regular contributor to these forums and will certainly ask for comment when she's looking for one.

So... I sit back and enjoy the piece. Well done =)

Thanks Doug, "you" on the other hand, need no preface ever to critique my work, cause a) I know whatever you say, you mean as a friend, and b) I respect and enjoy your own work tremendously...

The thing with this piece is, I did it really fast, so any mistakes that are there, I know are there because I wasn't trying for a masterpiece, just something for ST to enjoy. The face took longer than the rest of it, because that was really the only part I wanted to get dead on, so that he'd get the "new hair style" and my choice for it.

I could chalk it up to laziness, but does everything we post have to be perfect? And I can't say this enough, commenting on someone's art negatively as the only example of talking to them is both untimely and unappreciated, no matter the intention to help. It's not helpful, it's just rude.

I think the thing here is, we all really liked the piece, but it was just shy of perfection... so the artist in us came out...

I personally like critique on ALL my art... it's my default stance... but then... I have a strange aversion to praise... so go figure...
I sometimes forget not everyone takes to it so kindly...

We didn't mean to be disrespectful
