I like this thread idea a lot. I don't take part in a lot of stuff in the forums, but I think I would like to here. I think... one a day, to make for less-intimidating length. Aaaanndd... in the order that I created them.

Hero:
Hand of Annubis
fire/energy blaster lvl-50

description:
Anna Wells was trapped exploring a lost structure in Egypt. She emerged from beneath the sands amid a fiery explosion 4 days later, forever changed. The incredible energies contained in her body manifest in several ways, but most obvious is that at rest, her hands and lips are approx. 700 degrees F, while the 'cooler' parts of her body are around 400. Specially designed clothing and heatsink bands (costing more than a squadron of F-14's all told) allow her to interact in public areas outside of her refrigerated apartment.

--- I remember a voice. . . "You have trespassed, become trapped, and died in MY temple, MY place of rest. I offer you a choice, death-bound mortal. Pass on, as your kind do; or be restored by MY hand, the Spirit of the Dead, to be my next agent in living lands. Very well. The compact will now be sealed." Soon after, pressure on my chest, more and more, too much! Then a burning, searing heat! Now. . . a scar. What is to become of me?

Hero:
Renee Force
gravity/empathy controller lvl-50

description:
Dr. Renee Forseral was raised by her father, a career technologies researcher. His love of technical ways and know-how rubbed-off onto his daughter. Her heart is as big as the world though, so she earned her Ph.d in medical surgery, and set about helping the sick and injured.

Her background in technology and physics soon served her well. With the help of her father's facilities, she pioneered a set of gauntlets that could do many difficult surgical procedures, using gravimetric and magnetic forces in fine-tuned ways. (These, many times, without the need for cutting open the patient.)

Some time after the Rikti invasion, her hospital was attacked by Vahzilok zombies. Overriding her gauntlets to produce a maximum-force output, she was able to keep a zombie away from her and many patients just barely long enough for a hero to come and save them all. She decided to join the fight against Paragon City's invaders, and further developed her gauntlets' output capacities for use against her enemies.

I really get a kick out of trying to compress a snapshot of the character into a small space. All of my in game bios a written in first person as if someone has asked them about themself.

I'd rather not swamp the thread, especially seeing as I don't normally post in this part of the CoX forum world, but these are a couple of them...

Stormin' Glow (Ill/Storm)

Yeah the smile is meant to throw ya, misdirection about the last trick I have.

I can tell you this though; I’m dead, dead as a doornail. Not that I didn’t deserve it, hell I deserved worse… but I guess got worse didn’t I…

You see I spent my life a glorified murderer. “Meta-Human and Magical target risk assessor”, I worked out where to put the bullet, to put things simply. I couldn’t even count how many people have died because of me, and I can count pretty high, I took advanced calculus.

Though those dead souls, some of them weren’t well lets just say… humourless.

They brought me back, and they haunt my every step. They call it penance, I call it annoying, at any rate… let’s get to it.

Guardian Ballos (Fire/BA)

I have always been pretty good at cutting deals, tactical negotiations. When you have lost everything dear to you, it’s just that much easier. I have bartered my soul to scores of insane shamans and gods of the underworld, the trick was to give them just enough so they spend as much time as possible arguing amongst themselves as to who gets what.

What I got for my troubles was the power, skill and magic to avenge my family. Sure I turn into a giant, demon, axe wielding, fire wolf now; but your average executive can’t just go turn crime-fighter because some sickos kill his family. You need an angle, mine cost me my soul, and I just hope I have given myself enough time.

My favorite is that of my "handle" character Azazel005, but I don't have it here, I shall try and pop it in another time.

Sorry for the double post.

Just wanted to comment on some of the other back stories.

I was very fond of Empress' Riving, if you don't mind me asking what are the Powersets for that one?

The Rock demons were great too, excellent character sense conveyance.

Kasosh's Lares and Gold Wolf gave me a big smile also.

Doctor Crom's is excellent, chilling with so few words.

Riving is actually Fire/thorns dominator....

if looked at from far away (or if its dark) the thorns dont look "specifically" like bone or wood... they just look twisted and sharp... So, I decided that they were metal, and their odd coloration(and toxic damage, and the fact that they "dissolve" when not in use) was due to the organic metal they were made from almost instaintaniously corroding when exposed to oxygen (i.e. once they've burst through Mary's skin)

so, they are in a constaint state of rapid decay (thus, the toxic damage comes from hurling shards of rusty metal into her enemies)

After a distressing incident in which all the tenured professors fled criminal prosecution to the Rogue Isles, Alsoa had the remains of the department dropped in her lap by the University Board of directors, as she was the only one left that had a working knowledge of the ongoing experiments. Managing the testing conducted by her fellow grad students and dealing with a now-radioactive college freshman sister would be enough to try a saint, but then add on the pursuit of her Master's degree and she is lucky she is still sane. Having just been granted her Master's, she is more confidant in her dealings with the University staff, but she is always on the lookout for new researchers to assist in the ongoing experimentation.

See, that funeral made me realize something about you, about us, even about Mom. We're fighters, ya know? Here's three to be getting on with.

Zortel

The leader of the Unity Vigil, and former CEO of ZorTel Industries. Zorielle Rolando has been an active hero since 2002, when she took the Zortel Mk 1 Alpha suit out against the invading Rikti forces. Sustaining heavy injuries she spent her time recovering till the end of the war, assisting with her scientific know-how from her hospital bed.

In 2006, she announced the closure of high tech R&D company ZorTel Industries, and moved away from heroing to concentrate on the upcoming birth of her children with partner Tessa Lenson. Wanting to give back and help others though, she founded the Unity Vigil in 2007 and soon returned to active duty.

Today, Zorielle leads the group of heroes from Unity Tower in Skyway City, and often lends her considerable expertise to the city. Zorielle is 39 years old and lives on a small island in the South Pacific, with wife Tessa, adopted daughter Hannah, and their three year old twins Kelly and Michael.

Cindersnap

Ryan Andrews, also known as Cindersnap, is the leader of the New Vigilants. The group was set up by Zortel of the Unity Vigil to help train young mutants. Cindersnap himself came to the Unity Vigil after a spell in juvenile hall for gang crimes with the Outcasts.

At 18 years old, his position and life experiences have forced a lot more responsibility on him, having lost his parents in a car accident and his younger brother to a drugs related accident. None the less, he retains a cheery outlook, helped in part by his faith in Christianity and boyfriend Robert Judge, son of popular televangelist and ultra-conservative Gary Judge.

Ryan used to do some acting work, both stage in several productions including 'Romeo and Juliet', and teen dramas such as Talos Beach and Paragon High, until deciding to focus on his heroing. His fan base is numerous, and he often helps to arrange them into doing civic activities. He is fluent in American Sign Language. Cindersnap currently lives in the Atlas/Skyway urban district.

Madame Midknight

Jane Darc – Parapsychologist for hire, Ghost Buster, Mediator for the living impaired and roleplayer... is a zombie.

After falling and breaking her neck getting some air during a night of tabletop gaming, her body was used to test a new necromantic spell. And it worked... somewhat.

Jane is a criminals worst nightmare. Her use of weird ideas and spells, pop-culture laden language and use of bizarre subculture terminology frequently baffles those around her. The purple-dressing cadaver is also known for snark. Jane lives with her partner Jared Scott, familiar sentient rat Boo, snarky cat Rheu and golem Warforge. She has also been known to go LARPing, and runs a variety of tabletop games at the Wizard's Well in Kings Row. As someone who has seen death from both sides, she treats life as a big joke, but her mastery of magics gleamed from a mentor is impressive. She is also a very unorthadox Jew.

Boo, her rat, is named after a computer game character and has been known to do the Snoopy Dance for snacks.

OOOH. Bio postings!!! Sweet. You've released the inner bard in me nao!!!

I have a Bio for just about every character I make. And they're NEVER long enough... but I trim them as best I can to keep the core there... And the formatter, as we all know... is bunk. So they're in block form... mostly. Sorry. Limitations of my patience with a bad editor...

I'm no RPer, but I do try to be in character, and use the Bio to keep me there. Here are some of my favs... I won't bore you with 40 of them...

---

The Dawn Sisters, Pinnacle:

Ruby Dawn, 50 Mind/Emp Controller -
Tired of the Mundane, Ruby, and her sister Cerise, learned to change their world through Magic. For a time, they were content to amuse and empower for their own needs. One day, Ruby heard of new spell to try, but when her selfish practicing cost her the family's pet iguana in the horrific spell gone wrong, she swore to use her powers for the good of others. Her sister Cerise? The loss of Rodney caused her mind to snap, and she was never the same. Twisted inside, she turned to Evil, and can be found in the Rogue Isles.

Cerise Dawn, 50 Mind/Psy Dominator -
Cerise, the sister of the Heroine Ruby Dawn, was devastated by what Ruby did to poor Rodney the Iguana. After all, he was the family pet, and for Ruby to make a mistake in judgement and use Magic on him... Cerise was never the same after 'the incident.' She was lost in pain for Rodney, and unconsolable. She left home because she couldn't stand to be in Ruby's presence any longer. One thing led to another, as they say, and today Cerise is dedicated to a life of crime, inflicting her pain on others to get what she wants or needs. Watch your mind. Cerise is likely to mess with it.

(Rose Dawn, the third, long-lost half sister, is awaiting Going Rogue to be
released Live.)

Other favorite Hero stories...

Gruenfeld (GREWN-feld), Pinnacle, 20 Broad Sword/DA Scrapper
Gruenfeld the Great was minding his own business, hacking away at the King's enemies during a great battle when a space-time wormhole opened up and swallowed him, his men, and some of the enemy. The Story goes thus: Portal Corp's technology had enabled researchers to "look in" on the battle using one of their devices. A power problem caused a malfunction and opened a wormhole, depositing Gruenfeld and, um, portions of the rest near the device. Why Gruenfeld was spared is not known. What *is* known is that he cannot be sent back: History has written of a great darkness that swept him and his men away, never to be seen again (Coincidentally, this is what the research was about...) Gruenfeld awoke to find himself in Portal Corp's campus. When told of his plight, he accepted his fate with true Knightly honor. After a year of observations, Gruenfeld was able to get out and do what he did best: He became a Hero, and fights for his adopted City. Hail Gruenfeld!

---

Mood Bubbles, Freedom, 18 FF/Psy Defender -
An extraterrestrial visitor from the planet Ehlvahyni, Muu D'Bubalis was on an undocumented vaction excursion to System 64 Telis.42, Planet 3. Known as 'Earth' or 'Terra'. Such a beautiful planet. All blue, green brown and white... Suddenly, an unforecast solar flare hit her ship, and caused her spacecraft to malfunction. She was able to crash land her spacecraft near the Rogue Isles, whereupon she was captured, and her ship confiscated by those wretched villains. But they didn't realize what they were up against. Although addled by her crash, she easily escaped with the help of her force devices and mental abilities, but the ship was lost... for now. It is protected by a force field that cannot be deactivated except by Muu's mind. Tired and hurt, she was able to find refuge in Paragon City, and for the time being, has decided to help out while she recovers her powers, tries to find her ship and repair it, and get back home.

---

And Villains...

Endolith, Pinnacle, 28 Stone/Stone Brute -
He doesn't know who he is. He only knows that he is made of stone, and can control the earth. He was found in a quarry somewhere. They suspect that he's the product of some experiment gone awry, but all he knows is that he's mad at the universe for doing this to him, and he's going to make it pay. Somehow.

---

Doyen Prime, Champion, 8 Grav/EA Dominator -
Doyen Prime is an ancient, immortal being, transcending time and lording over thousands of worlds and cultures. In that time he's learned a great many things from his conquests. He has come to know the art of gravity and energy manipulation. And now he's come to Earth to conquer it. He has time. He will outlast. He is the Doyen, after all. But it wouldn't be... well, *fun* to just unleash his almighty fury and knowledge to conquer the Earth. No, it will be much more entertaining to slowly perform a masterpiece of subjugation, where everyone will finally be under his control, and by their own wills. Even the "great" Recluse will eventually be a pawn of the Doyen.

---

Jerry the Deathclown, Pinnacle, 9 Dark Melee/SR Stalker
Jerrold Thompson was obsessed with being a clown. It's all he ever wanted. He read, watched videos, anything clown! But then he started using his mother's makeup to paint his face. She tried to make him stop, but he wouldn't. She stopped buying the makeup, but no matter, Jerry just went to the store himself. They wouldn't help me... I mean, Jerry. It was when Jerry started to yell "MAKE ME LIKE TAMMY FAYE!!!" that it started to go sour. Jerry was interviewed by some men in white coats. Next thing I ... he knows he's put in a strange jacket thing and taken away! They stole him, and took my makeup away. Jerry swore they'd PAY for that, but they weren't there when he broke out. Oh well, I'll just go find someone, make THEM pay. I mean Jerry. What? You're not laughing at me are you? Good. Hey, lemme show you my nifty gloves. They channel dark energy, so people can PAY... you don't have any rouge on you do you? Gotta touch up my face...

---

And finally, this gem of win...

Thing of Bigness, Guardian 26 SS/WP Brute -
Me am Big.

(Big's a LOT of fun... Dumb, but fun. )

August 31, 2012. A Day that will Live in Infamy. Or Information. Possibly Influence. Well, Inf, anyway. Thank you, Paragon Studios, for what you did, and the enjoyment and camaraderie you brought.

I don't put any biography in there. All I have in there are the chars name (if not a secret ID), their age, and any distinguishing features. Plus any extra info needed for characters with flangesense. Anything else you want to know, that's what roleplay is for, or the wiki.

heh... interestingly enough...
I find it rather tedious to read through peoples lengthy, often medocre backstories written up on wikis or even here...

likewise, I always thought biological discriptions a little pretentious in a primarily visual medium. (you have a scar, pick a face with a scar... dont just tell me about it in a bio, ya know?)

....so the necessity of restraining yourself to a feeling, or at worst, a summary of your character in those 1024 characters seems infinitely more compelling that what is produced with full freedom of movement.

I refer to things not immediately doable in the char creator. Such as piercings (my main has a belly piercing, so would be visible in certain clothing) or tattoo's. Accent is another (as my main is British), and other things such as being a psi blank, so telepaths needn't bother thinking they can read her. (There's a decent reason for that too, roleplayed out over a series of several months, and not just an arbitrary "get outta my head" thing to annoy folks)

For anything else, get to know her just like you would anyone else in the real world. Stuff that's on the wiki is mainly there as a memory aid for people. I really wouldn't expect people who don't know her to bother reading any of it; and even then, only if they're interested.

Personally, I've always held the notion that if a backstory gets long, it should be written to entertain as well as inform; or at least to intrigue, leaving the reader with questions they wish to answer via character interaction. I tend to use bios to just convey some basic information, and the wiki pages to add depth to that.

I might consider that on a NEW char, but not my main. She's been established in RP since June 2005, and just about every hero side RPer on Union has at least heard of her name by now, even if their chars have not.

I can understand that on some levels.... something like an accent, i'd just RP.. something like a peircing, to me, seems totally arbitrary and unless its "the belly peircing of the gods!" I wouldnt even mention it, outside of a roleplay chat "have you seen my new peircing?!" *shows off the belly peircing*

but I can see the need to express something like "cant be mind read" or "has no soul", but in saying that, I like the challange and ingenuity of encorporating such information into an actual "story", in that confining little box.

to me.... there is a firm distinction between IC and OOC information. My character knows nothing about yours, but what they can immediatly sense. but the reason I want to talk to you at ALL is because of either:
A) i personally experenced your RP, and think its worth my time.
or
B) Your backstory interests me.

now, the sort of backstory you include, from my perspective, is "useful" when I am roleplaying with you... but it doesnt help me decide if I "should".
so, unless Im already around you roleplaying, I have no way of really knowing if you're someone I'd be interested in roleplaying with. (which, imo, is the whole point of the backstory... to get an idea/feeling for the character and player in a passive, unintrusive manner.)

A fair enough opinion. However, we then get into the slight problem when you have a RP character that's been RP'd daily for over 4 years. Just WHAT do you put IN that bio? WAY too much has happened to her over the years to list much in the bio, and most of it, especially to a new RPer, would be completely meaningless.

Do you care that she was the catalyst for the whole "Requiem War" saga we had on Union? Hell, there's some RPers on Union that don't even acknowledge that it happened in the first place! Does it matter to you that early in her career, she was arrested and tried for the brutal murder of a dozen kids? That kind of info would probably put you right off RPing with the character, in fact; yet it's a matter of public record that she was in fact, tried AND found guilty (and she did it too!), but was released only because it was proven she was under another's control at the time.

With a new char, it's different. You don't have much, so fitting it into 1024 chars is easy. With an old char though, things become much much MUCH more complicated.

So I just stripped the bio from most of my chars, stuck the info on the Union Wiki, and just give basic data in the bio these days.

Besides, the text editor for the bio is SERIOUSLY pants...

actually, none of those "facts" would have turned me off as a roleplayer. I refer to the skill used in writing it, the depth of thought and caring shown in the character.
ask yourself this question...
are those facts IMPORTANT?
if they arent "who you character is"... and are merely "what she's done.." then they arent relavent.
if it DEFINES your character, that she killed a busload of kids, if it makes her who she is today... then its important.
if its just an episode in her life... then it would be up to her to tell it.

a backstory, especially with the limitations we have in the game, is NOT a running tally of every event a character has participated in.. rather, its an expose on those events which shaped him/her into a hero, into the person we see before us.
as the character changes, and evolves... facts that were so very important, once, no longer hold the same significance.
where once, there was a hero, fighting to avenge the death of his sister... now that hero fights to protect his young wife.
so, the background drops that sense of vengance. yes the sister died, and yes it mattered once... but now there is something more important, more "self defining" than his previous aims.

this is just conjecture.
a new character could have just as much, if not MORE information and story about their life "before" than a character you've played with for four years.
its up to the individual.
I have what amounts to a 600 page "backstory" for a character I only just reciently made in game.
there's no way I could put even an 8th of that character into the bio-space...
not because the character is new or old, but because i CARE about that character.

mhm, like i said, I can understand your reasoning... not to mention the fact that your RP regularly with a specific group of people...
they dont need to "get to know" your character. they know it. they just need the facts, to make sure they keep their RP straight.

You know what I want to see as a feature in this game?

It probably won't happen though.

I'd like to see all the in-game character bios from all the servers automatically digested to pages on the Web. These pages would be refreshed once a day or perhaps once a week. Then I could read them all without having to wait for someone to log in or come within range of my character.
