*picks up pencil*

"WOAH! Where you been? When you left I waited and waited. I thought you were gone for good."

" I... I.. met someone else."

"omg"

"Her name is Photoshop."

"THAT FLOOZY!"

"don't be like that"

"She's all flash. She gets around, you know that right? That she's seein' ALOT of other guys."

"I...I know that yes."

"I'm always here for you. You know that too right?"

"yeah baby I know that too. Let's go do something fun."

So I picked up my pencil again today. I haven't really tried to pursue drawing in a long time but this forum is so motivating I thought I'd take a crack at it again. You guys are always really kind in your critiques so have at it! I will be adding to this thread as the pic progresses but I am really looking at getting some critiques here so don't be shy.

I don't have talent to just whip stuff up in my mind so I took this reference shot to look at.

Hands giving me troubles like always but it's good enough to go to Photoshop now I think. *cringe*

Looking good. I like the pose, looks like he is just about to SMASH something! Unless I am way off he looks like he is in mid-Total Focus leap.

Looking good so far. The armor rough really tightens the figure up quite nicely. One thing that does worry me a touch is his head. In the first sketch you posted, my first impression was "decapitated hero guy, that's unique" After studying it, I realized he just had a tinny little head. Based on the proportions of his body, it comes off as very odd looking. The small head look might come off as more natural if his build was more squat... broader shoulders, shorter legs, etc. However, it looks like you might be enlarging it in the armor rough, it's hard to tell with only the scarf there, so it might not be much of an issue.

One other problem I saw with the head in the first sketch is it's placement. It is sitting a bit too far to the right (the figures left). If you were to draw a central contour line up the figures chest, the heads placement would probably be a lot easer for you.

As the hands go, the hand to the right (his left) is a thing of beauty! I love that hand! The slight "fanning" of the fingers of the fist really help make it look and feel real... it's great. The problems with the hands that you might be having seem to be rooted in that finger placement.

While the figures left hand is perfect, you didn't quite get that fanning in his right hand. All of his fingers are folded exactly the same and seem to be just marks on the same folded plane. Try to duplicate what you had done with his left hand and that should eliminate any problems that you might be having with them.

The fingers do not fold the same because they originate from different points on the hand. What I mean to say is the end of the hand is not flat but curved. The point where the hand ends and the pinky finger begins is about a knuckles distance back from where the index finger begins. This coupled by the nice and meaty bottom portion of the thumb gives the fingers a fanned like appearance when they are curled into a fist.

Still, great work so far... just based on the difference from sketch to armor rough, t5his looks like it's going to turn out great.

Thanks sooo much for this comment. You have hit the two trouble spots EXACTLY. The head I am completely undecided on. I had a completely different head I made on a seperate layer and then just erased the parts under the cowl, however it was more of a straight on shot and I dumped it. Currently there really is no head in the pic yet. The screenie has his head tilted all the way back looking up at the sky. That's fine for a screen grab but makes for a bad drawing as no one really wants to be looking straight up 'Forges nose hehe. Unsure what I am going to do there atm.

Then there's that hand. Definately gonna do something else there now that you have brought it up. I was hoping that I had that taken care of but it's obviously not. Ill most likely invert the image and try drawing it in from reverse and see if that frees my mind up a bit.

Thanks very much for your input Graver. i'm very flattered.

Hey, the hands are prety good as is. I only honed in on his right hand because you said you were having problems with his hands in the first place and I was all "problems? Hrm, lets see what's ging on there then, shall we"

Update!

Got the hand sorted out I think.

looks pretty good. Head looks great, as for the hand, the knuckles look much more natural. personal nitpick though (and you can just ignore it if you don't want to deal with it any further) The hand looks like it is raised to knock on a door, not on a head...just an observation that its a bit rotated. Looks good if that was the intention!
