Free editing software?
Infranview is free so is GIMP which is comparable to photoshop I've heard. There is also paint.net a program that was almost implemented into windows. Just do a google search for any or all of these. All are free
IIRC there is one that is called OpenCanvas that someone on these boards likes.

Everything is free on the internet!
Lots of people like the GIMP.

Thank you all for the tips and advice. I have tried GIMP in the past and the learning curve was a bit steep for me - I recall mumbling to myself and babbling about layers for a bit...
I have Irfan View and use it as my simple cut & crop ap - I have never looked at it for more deep features. Will do so now.
Thanks again.

Photoshop can be free.

...not that I would know.
This isn't free, but a really nice graphics program out there is Paint Shop Pro. It was originally by Jaasc, but Corel owns it now. The last version I used was 8 and it worked really well. Only reason I stopped was because I got Photoshop CS as gift. After a quick search I found 8 for sell for about $20. 10 (aka X) is for sell on Corel's site for about $60 with the newest version XI for sell for $80.
Again I know it's not free, but it's a considerably cheaper alternative to Photoshop.
There's a plug-in interface for Gimp that makes it more photoshop like called photogimp I believe.
Paint Shop Pro is okay, I'm not a huge fan, but it will do and it is overall less expensive. If you are a student at a University/high school or work for one Photoshop can be bought at "Education Prices" which are considerably less expensive than normal conditions and not much more than Paint Shop Pro (which also, I believe has an education version lurking about).
Good luck.

Gimp's learning curve is about the same as photoshop :/ as they are very similar to each other, but I've only rarely messed around in gimp to see what it was all about.
Nothing new to add on programs that I can think of off the bat. Paintshop pro used to have a free version many many moons ago from what i recall before corel bought them. Either way it is cheaper then corel photopaint

I am a complete novice looking for some editing tools to learn about graphics editing. I do not really want to shell out a gazillion dollars for Photoshop.
I'd like to be able to create some graphic images - very basic - I am a complete noobie. Maybe just something that let's me combine a few screenshots into a single wallpaper-ish image, etc.
My MacBook Pro has iPhoto but it is geared towards editing a single image, not creating new images.
Any ideas?
Thank you.
