Plasma Stream Commission WIP
I like the way the image is developing, and having checked out the other pieces you have done...it's great stuff!
That being said, I hate to nitpick, but I think that the raised leg may be a bit too tight...in terms of anatomical comfort. Visually, and in true comic book fashion, it is a striking pose.
Assuming she is in flight, it implies she pulled her leg up to the point her boot is next to her butt - that is a mechanical motion that implies a great deal of effort - hardly a casual motion, if that is the intent.
If it's an action move, like she's taking off, then it makes more sense.
That's just an observation, and I hope I don't sound like a jerk for saying it, because its so well-done.

Great work on Plas so far... and you managed to put her in a position where her top pattern in conjunction with her top buckles wouldn't drive you to homicide! Good choice!
Critique wise, while great so far, I'd say your shorting her a touch in her assets. When we pull our legs up to us like she did with the leg closest to the viewer, the heal comes very close to lining up with out back-side (depending how large ones back size is). As it is now, it looks like she has a butt much like my own, skin and bone and not much else. Don't cheat the poor woman and push that butt out a touch and you'll be golden!
Still, great stuff, man!
Very nice piece, in my opinion. Can't wait to see how it comes out.
On a side note, I know I've said this one before, so please forgive my short foray into grumpy artistness...
Critiques on commissions should really be given over PM. This isn't so much for the artist as being considerate to the person who commissioned them. I've learned from personal experience that it's *very* easy to de-value a piece that the commission-er was very happy about with well-intentioned critique(I've re-drawn a piece out of my pocket on at least one occasion, because despite my client telling me it was okay if I didn't, I could tell they weren't as happy when they first got it after some-- totally well-intentioned-- critiques came in).
That said, a WIP thread like this is a lot safer. I just want to caution people to be careful with helpfulness. Game on!
Thanks for the comments and support, folks!
-Servo - You have a keen eye there, my friend! I agree completely that the raised leg isn't as "natural" as it could be (or even should be), which is something I was debating about when I was looking in a Yoga magazine (my wife's) for reference. In the end, I chose to keep it this way because it was just a bit more dramatic. What I think is really interesting is that the picture must be pretty "realistic" for folks to make the comments they've made...which is great! Working the line between "realism" and "dramatic hero-ism" is an interesting place to be. Thanks again!
- Graver - Oh-ho! Now THAT is something I didn't catch. I guess I was focusing too much on the breasts to give the butt it's proper....attention? Actually, I wanted to keep Plasma a bit on the lean side because....well...she's not a playful, emotionally accessable character in my opinion. More like Batman. Because of that, I didn't want to make her too...volumptuous. The feeling I get from the Plasma Stream player is that the character is mostly business with her only real passion being for flight. Still....I hate to see a lady shorted in her....assets? I'll give it some thought.
- Su Lin - That is a very insightful comment. One of the things I learned early is not to expose art too quickly to the critic. Even though they mean well, a critical word can really wreck the "feel" of a piece. I read somewhere that artists should treat new work like babies and not hurry to expose them to the "cold eyed critic". That said, I feel that as long as an artist is giving critical thought to the design of a piece, he (or she) can give three responses:
1. "I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!"
2. "I hear what you are saying, but this is the way I planned it."
3. "Uh...ok. Thanks for your time!"
In the end, I think that if the artist feels solidly about the design of the piece (and actually says so), the buyer of the piece should feel confident that they are getting a "carefully considered" piece of work as opposed to "Hey! That looks good! What do you know....".
Thanks again for the feedback!

Absolutely, and honestly, Plas is the best sort of customer you're ever likely to get, to boot, so I wouldn't be too worried in this case. I was trained to think professionally as an artist, is all, and client happiness is a big part of reputation is a huge part of a career, as it were, big or small... and people will be people. I just think it's important, when chiming in on commissioned art in particular, to remember that whatever the artist thinks about the piece and critiques thereof, the artist isn't the only person invested in it. I do agree, however, that confidence in your work will tend to breed confidence in the recipient. Like I said... I didn't *have* to re-draw... but then there's that 'but' that didn't have to be there.
it's a tricky ol' thing, the art game.
Whew...I was afraid I was out of line for making commentary...I tend to be of the "look, but don't touch(or comment)" mindset. I'm worried I'll get the "Who the hell are you?" look/response and might mess it up. The detail is such that I have been very impressed, and I think that's why I noticed it at all.
I feel like I'm babbling now, so....carry on!

Nice going. Can't wait for the finish.
I came here to look at the pic but must admit I was intrigued by the discussion of anatomy.

You're never out of line. I think most serious artists are happy to have a critique, however "bad" it might be, over a simple "I like it!" It shows us you took the time to really *look* and care.
My comments were only in regards to commission pieces, and I encourage crits even then(just suggest they be PM'ed, and praise be the public part).

Well for your pieces that's fine. But this isn't yours. So I'll go with whatever Roguehill wants.

I did send a few comments to the artist as well. and he really does have her attitude down pretty well in his minds eye.
Considering he probably didnt read Secret Origins: Plasma Stream (linked here more as Artist Reference than shameless plug or thread jack)
As the buyer I am happy with the piece. Quite happy actually and actually upgraded from the sketch to the inks as I saw it and was eager to see more. Perhaps I will take it further later, but since I don't often comment on WIP threads even of my own character I had been quiet.
