The Magus held his arm extended.

"Three Oni approach." He muttered, taking a few steps ahead of the group.

"Dalnosh arrakon majorok..." He barely breathed before a giant Clay Golem rose from the cracks in the street.

Pointing to the approaching demons, it rumbles forward and he turns back to the group.

((Yeah, he's pretty much got all the powers of a D2 Necromancer.))

((Ah-HAH! I had a nagging feeling that was spelled wrong for some reason ))

"Three?" Allen mumbled quietly as they packed their robots back into the Crawler, "There should be more..."

He nodded to the driver, the coaxed everyone into the armored vehicle, not even waiting for the hatch to close before telling the driver to gun it.

The hundred meters shrank frighteningly fast...

"CHIHAYA! \Begin the incantation!\" Sae ordered as she unholstered her guns and began firing at the advancing Oni.
"Roger! \It'll take me a bit longer, I've never transported something this big before,\" Chihaya replied.
"Fantastic," Sae muttered, "Ryuji, buy us some time."
Ryuji leapt in front of the group and moved his arm up from his waist in a wide arc.
Instantly a massive wall of ice surrounded the group. The oni weren't deterred, however, and began smashing the wall.
"\I can't hold it for long Sacchan\," he said. (OOC: Sacchan is what Ryuji calls Sae.)

The Clay golem snarled, and as one of the Oni broke out a section of the wall it was met with a rock-hard haymaker to the face...

"What the hell are those!?" Talon exclaimed, a note of panic in his voice as he spun the wheel to avoid the group of creatures.

"Demons," Rylie replied softly. She blinked rapidly, increasing the magnification of her focal implants to get a better look. Her breath caught as their faces came into sharp detail.

"Think we can outrun them, Ryles?" In the rearview mirror, the demons were keeping pace with the four-by, maybe even gaining a little.

She shook her head and deactivated the focals. "I very much doubt that. But we might be able to distract them, depending on how inteligent they are." She paused, cursing herself again for her lack of knowledge. "They look like Oni. Maybe they really are. I don't know."

"Oni?"

"Harbingers of calamity. They're somewhat akin to the devils of your western religions."

"Not my religion...What do we do about them?"

Rylie's expression was grim. "I think we're going to have to kill them...Or at least maim them enough to give us time to get away. I don't know if they can be killed..."

Talon cursed impressively under his breath. "Same tactics as usual then? Gotcha." He slammed on the breaks. "I'll give you as much time as I can, babe. That toy of Ion's better work."

Rylie watched for a moment as Talon stalked towards the group, her heart in her throat. Then the adrenaline rush kicked in and she too left the vehicle.

Talon psyched himself up and taunted the demons. "Your mothers wear army boots!" He could hear Rylie chuckle somewhere behind him, and he hoped it was a good sign.

"You won't need to." Allen said, tapping his finger in two different directions, signaling his troopers to take position. The crawler's smaller front turret rotated around, taking aim.

As the second Oni smashed through the wall, it was greeted with several beams of crackling green energy, slicing right through its body and leaving small holes.

At first, this didn't seem to do much more than enrage it. But as the holes widened, the Oni's roar of rage turned to a bellow of pain, the green energy rapidly consuming its body.

The third broke through as the first fell back, slowly vaporizing into nothing, bringing its kanabo down on Allen with the force of a bulldozer.

The turret, however, foiled this plan, a thick stream of plasma consuming both the weapon and the Oni's right arm. Another roar cheoed as this demon met the same end as the first.

"They're here, Sir." a voice crackled in his radio, then the telemetry form the Crawler's sensors popped up on his visor, showing a large force of various demons approaching from all sides. They had been surrounded. The Oni were only a distraction.

"Knew this was too easy." Allen growled, "Our 'larger force' isn't stupid. Any ETA on that evac?"

"I don't know," Sae said, "We've never transported something this big before."
She turned to Ryuji and gave him a signal. Instantly the broken parts of the ice walls reconstructed themselves.
But the walls didn't do any good. What came next...
Covered head to toe with black armor, a vaguely human shape.
"CHIHAYA! \Hurry up! it's Vharsuun\!"
The ice wall shattered, and any and all ammunition fired at him didn't even make so much as a scratch.
"\Why's he so far from Inokashira?!\" Eichiro screamed.
At the last moment, just before Vharsuun could reach them, the incantation finished and the group was catapulted in the air, landing in the Shinjuku jump point.

Hm. G-lift on a large scale. Fun.

Allen slowly reconstructed his balance. he had expacted a teleport, not a careening through the air. Luckily, the Crawler was build to take this, and the crew was grinning boadly at the troopers, who had no g-foce compensators to nullify the acceleration forces.

"So who was the black knight you were shouting at?" he questioned Sae, having only caught a glimpse of the creature out of the corner of his eye, as he and his troops had been busy fending off the large number of Oni that had tried to encircle them.

"Jusgind from that last oder, I'm going to assume he's bad news, yes?"

---------------------

"Entering troposphere." the pilot reported, "Course steady, no detection evident. I think we kept it clean, Sir."

The commanding officer in the dropship's cockpit nodded, "Good. Descend into hydrosphere then, we don't want to be picked up visually. How far to the destination 'Tokyo Bay'?"

"Sixty-two kilometers and closing. We should eb there in about eight minutes."

"Have all landing forces ready to deploy. We have to assume the enemy holds much of the territory..."

(OOC: Shinjuku is indeed a city within Tokyo. Tokyo is more like an american county than just a city. There are wards and such within Shinjuku, but the majority of it is rubble. To be precise, the "Shinjuku" area in this ruined Tokyo refers to the area around Shinjuku Station. Just like Akihabara is technically within Chiyoda (or was it Tokyo?) city, and the closest major shrine is in the Ochanomizu area, but the area is called "Akihabara" because it centers around said area and train station. Add to that it's all but run by a group of guys that built giant robots who wouldn't accept any other name. Any other encampments around Tokyo would be named after either the district, temple, or shrine used as the focal point. Conversely, the same logic is applied to demon nests and portal sites. Also, there's not as much impact from landing at the jump sites as you would expect, performing a jump generates a kinetic field that dampens the jump and landing.)
Sae looked panicked.
"Vharsuun is...probably the most powerful demon we've run across. He's usually found around the Inokashira park area, but he's been sited elsewhere. He usually targets large groups of metahumans. He's one of the many reasons we stay in squads of less than ten now. He singlehandedly killed six of my teammates, and did this to me," Sae explained.
She unbuttoned her blouse and showed a large claw mark on her back, which would fit the size of Vharsuun's hand.
"I was lucky to live," Sae was suddenly downcast.
"Sae-chan..." Chihaya put a hand on her shoulder.
"Anyway, welcome to the Shinjuku encampment, nicknamed 'Yamato' by some of our more patriotic members. You'll find any services from medical treatment to food inside the station. We also have several hotels requisitioned for use. If you need ammunition or anything else militaristic, the quartermaster should be able to help you, so long as you fill out the required forms. And don't try raiding the armory, we've taken the precaution of hiding all the weapons around kabuki-cho, and all the ammo is kept in a safe."

To a passing crew of priestesses, the Magus snarled:

"YOU! Get me a vial of holy water. You get me the bones of a tiger! You get me three lily petals! AND YOU GET ME SOME WINE!"

The three miko that were being taunted by the mage stopped and looked at him incredulously.
One of they stepped up and looked him in the eye.
"Okay punk, first off my two friends here don't speak English, second you need to talk to a catholic priest or visit a shrine to get holy water, we don't carry it around. Third, there's no tigers around here, the zoo was cleaned out right away during the RIKTI invasion. Fourth, the only lily petals we have are, again, at the shrines and temples. Fifth, get your own wine," she pointed to a bar not twenty feet away, "and finally, you're annoying."
With that, she stomped off with her friends.
Eichiro, overhearing the "conversation," walked up to the mage.
"Their jobs are very, VERY stressful, and some of them get...snippy. Generally if you want something you can't get yourself, ask a police officer or security guard," Eichiro explained, "And don't bug the monks either, unlike the miko they can get pretty violent."

"Stupid Paragon City and their stupid roads," muttered Jay Bigumton as he wrestled with the controls and brought his ten ton Powered Combat Suit in for a smooth landing atop a building. "Tell me I can't fight the good fight just cause Laserblade is too heavy and would break the roads. I'll show them, start a whole mecha revolution in that town once I prove that I can fight crime with the best of them."

A pair of thrusters lit up and the fifteen foot tall machine blasted upwards and hovered for a moment high up in the air.

"Bloody demon things, scratching up the paint. It'll take hours to get the scratches out," Jay kept talking to himself as he landed with a loud thud in the middle of a small open area.

A Lesser Hound lifted up its head and howled at the large, metallic smelling shape before it and then rushed forward, its tiny mind focused on destruction. Laserblade, both the name of the mecha and his registered hero name, pivoted smoothly and lifted up his left arm laser cannon and fired a beam of coherent light that turned the Lesser Hound into a greasy patch on the ground.

"Now I'm gonna have to check the focusing crystal. Too much laser fire and the thing starts to warp."

Another jump and Laserblade landed in a street next to an empty vehicle. In front of the vehicle was a pair of civilians and a small pack of Onis. The mecha took one step forward and raised its cannon before Jay activated the megaphone.

"Hey! You two there! Get back in your car and make for the base! This isn't the place for sight-seeing!" he shouted out.

The last thing Jay needed was for a pair of dimwit civvies getting themselves killed in his patrol sector. But then Jay remembered that he had forgotten to turn on his translator, which meant he just shouted at them in English.

"Aw hell, I hope the point got across," he said as he rapid fired a trio of shots into the lead Oni. The demon fell back with a badly scorched chest while one of its buddies threw a boulder at Laserblade.

The blue and white painted mecha took a step forward and switched on the energy sword clutched in its right fist. With a quick slash, he had cut the incoming rock in two, the halves falling to either side.

((Aha, There's my in.))

Toshio was suddenly startled by a loud crashing sound as some gaijin in huge robot armor came down and started firing at an Oni, who had been harassing some civilians.

After a moment, he overheard him say something about...Paragon City?

Toshio's mind swam with memories. He had once run around Paragon City when he was younger. Younger and dumber.

There was no time to reminisce, though. Toshio's jagged grin cracked his face and he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

"Ikou ka...?"

With that, the drunken master took a swig of his flask, charging into one of the other two Oni headlong with a triumphantly defiant and drunken ki-ai. A flurry of blows dented its face in, and the man weaved, grinning, as the Oni screeched, infuriated, and tried its hardest to retaliate. As much as Toshio weaved haphazardly, though...he seemed to be effectively evading the blows. Leaning far back, he suddenly smacked his head forward and cracked it against the Oni before him, sending it to the ground.

There was one Oni left. Toshio turned to the foreigner and quirked an eyebrow, as though asking which of them should take it.

Laserblade could see something familiar about this man, however. His moves resonated in the hero's mind - twisted as they were by the alchohol, were they not...Tsoo?

((Ah, i see you've already got a character for the Mecha AT? Well, here's hoping too, it's an awesome concept for an epic ))

Allen sighed. What was with people thinking they were better than everyone else? If everybody thought like that, no one at all would be helping each other in the galaxy - and help was in short supply these days already, if only because the Concile had killed off almost all of it.

"I thank you, ma'am." he said to Sae, smiling under his visor. Too bad he had to keep his identity secret...but after all, there was good reason for the LAW.

He really didn't want to tell her that their weapons were far beyond anything the humans had, so he just remained silent on the topic of the armories.

"But I think we'll be on the move most of the time. You've set up the defense. The UN and Portal Corp. have the Containment Blockade. We're the ones assigned to spearhead the counterattack - once we gather enough intel on the enemy, that is. So the first thing I formally request is a synopsis: to the best of your knowledge, what happened, and who are we dealing with?"

At that moment, Allen bit his tongue. He had said 'who', not 'what', as humans normally did when they talked about otherworldly creatures. To Allen and his crew, anything intelligent went under the term 'people', including whatver force was guiding these demons.

Allen just hoped Sae wouldn't notice the slip-up, or just attribute it to his 'foreign' background...

"Well as near as we can gather," Sae said, "It IS a 'who'. Whatever is behind this has plans. The zoologist guys say these things don't behave like animals. Plus, something had to open the portals, and there has to be a way to close them. "Unfortunately, no one has actually reached a portal alive. Each one is guarded by demons we haven't even identified yet. And size doesn't matter, as you can see from Vharsuun's power.
"As for what happened? Well that's easy: a bunch of portals opened up in parks and residential areas and then a bunch of demons came through. At first they were focused, taking out cell phone towers, television stations, and several small shrines. If it weren't for...uh, actually I'm not allowed to mention that person's name unless you have the appropriate clearance. Which being a foreigner brandishing any sort of firearm immediately disqualifies you for. Only reason I know this person is because I went to school with them. And don't try looking that up, the school databases were fried. Literally."

Meanwhile in the Akihabara Police station, the band Bastion was holed up in a jail cell, being lectured on public disturbance.

Lou pulled himself out of yet another crater he had made after being slammed into the ground. His shirt was ripped in a couple places and he was even bleeding a little. It took a lot to get him to bleed, and it almost always made him irritable since it usually meant annoying complications.

"Ya know, if you'd kept the gun you might not be losin' right now," his hair scolded him.

"I... ain't... LOSIN'," he growled, catching the rock demon's next punch and returning an uppercut that lifted the monster a good two feet off the ground.

"Okay, point taken, but you ain't exactly winnin' either."

Lou merely growled in response, jumping onto the downed creature and tearing away at its rocky hide until it managed to throw him away again.

=======================================

Meanwhile, Bu darted nervously from shelter to shelter. So far all the demons she'd passed hadn't seen her, being more interested in the sound of battle not far away. It made her feel both afraid and relieved, and then guilty that some part of her actually WAS relieved.

Louis had been her best friend as a child and she'd been heartbroken when he left. Now, if she lost him again so soon after his return; she wasn't sure she'd be able to bear it. Leaning against a building to give her throbbing ankle a rest, she gave a silent prayer that her friend would make it back to her soon.

Allen could have burst out laughing. His friend Ace had once observed two things about why he thought humans would take centuries to become an advanced civilization: first, rain showers could prevent a rocket launch, and second, the only thing their 'nations' could even agree on was to disagree.

However, this was a starting point for this investiation, and if he backed down now, he'd have to go in without all the intelligence - and this person might know something very crucial.

"Very well." Allen said, nodding to a trooper leaning on tha Crawler, "Terc, get the Chosa Besshitsu on the horn, we'll need their ok for this."

The trooper nodded, pulling out a mobile phone and dialing a number. It had to be satellite, for he got a flawless signal.

"\Miss Niguma\?" Allen asked as he was handed the phone, speaking Japanese correctly, but with quite the accent. Where that accent came from, though, was nigh impossible to tell, "\It's me. I'm afraid I don't have time, we've got a little crisis on our hands. Yes, of course I am in Tokyo. UKUSA assigned me to this case, but it looks like they don't have the level of clearance I need to get a certain name, and I was hoping Chobetsu could help with that.\"

The female voice on the phone said a few more things, then Allen handed the phone to Sae, "For you."

The person on the phone identified herself as Niguma Yuki, head of the Chossa Besshitsu. She informed Sae that ECHELON operatives had transferred status from a third-party relation with Japan's intelligence forces to a full-fledged partner, at least temporarily, and that since the UKUSA community practically headed ECHELON, they could be told anything that was deemed in any way helpful to resolving this crisis...

Sae just stared at them for a moment.
"You actually believe I have the clearance to tell someone I can't see about the country's most guarded secret? Here," she handed the...well she didn't quite know what he was...a small PDA that all SDF officers kept.
It was a list of disclosure information regarding anything Class B and above.
It was translated into English and Japanese and put into layman's terms rather than lawyerese
1) Do not reveal information to anyone without the proper clearance.
2) If you haven't heard of their company before, don't reveal any information
3) Only reveal the information via methods that cannot be traced.
4) Never reveal Class A, S, or SS information to anyone you cannot physically see.

With that she handed the phone back to Allen.
"Not only that, but there's no way in hell I'm ratting out my friend to anyone. If you want to know who this person is, you'll have to talk to the guys on top, because her safety is more important to me than anything right now. OOPS!" Sae had let her friend's gender slip, "Ah English is so clumsy!"
(OOC: Sae speaks with a pretty thick but understandable accent, I'm just too lazy to write all her dialogue in Engrish )
"Ukyo-taichou!" a soldier called.
"Hai?" she replied.
"\We're having a mission briefing in the main building! The higher ups heard about the tank and want to stage a raid on the Ginza portal\!"
"Yokatta! \Should I bring these guys? They own the tank\," Sae asked.
"\Of course, we need their help after all\," the soldier, clearly higher ranked than Sae, replied.
Allen and his crew would notice at this point that the soldiers had little regard for actual rank other than the jobs it entailed, but a very high regard on national secrets and loyalty.

The mage approached them, a trail of holy water orbiting around him and a large bag of something in his robe pocket.

"Let us advance."

"\Well, I tried.\" Allen heard as he took the phone back, stepping away a little so Sae couldn't hear the rest of the conversation, "\I'll try to get paperwork to you, but at the moment it might take considerable time.\"

"\You don't have to tell me we're in a war here.\" Allen grimly replied, "\Just get me the clearance on paper ASAP. You know me, I'm not going to exploit this, but I can't tell anyone that.\"

"\Right. I'll just handle this as if USUKA was still what it was five years ago. I should have everything rolling within 48 hours.\"

"Arigato." Allen hung up, then walked back to Sae, "I'll have that clearance soon. And don't worry, I have no intention of involving your friend in any way if he isn't directly connected with this."

Before Sae could respond, the ground began to rumble, and pebbles laying on the street started jumping up and down a little. Both Allen's crew and the SDF operatives raised their weapons.

But as a roaring sound came over the rumble from behind a few buildings, Allen lowered his arm cannon again, turning it back into a normal hand. His troopers did the same, and just as he was about to tell Sae what was coming, five more Crawlers rounded a corner at ridiculous speed, rushing into the base around the train station, and came to a stop in convoy formation not half a meter from Allen.

"Backup's here." he smiled to Sae, greeting the trooper stepping from the lead vehicle with a firm but quick hug, "Glad to see you made it, soldier."

"Glad to have. It's a mess out there. Are we really expected to clean all this up?"

Allen cleared his throat, causing the trooper to snap to attention.

"Right, Sir."

"Everything go smootly out at sea?" Allen questioned.

"Depends on what you mean by smoothly. The UN fleet and the MSDF didn't give us any trouble, if that's what you mean. In fact, the requisition for their Osumi went off without a hitch."

"Good to see the Chobetsu still holds authority with some people around here." Allen sighed, "Alright, get the men ready to move out and add my Crawler to the convoy. I'll be back shortly."

Allen turned about and walked back to Sae, having no doubt his orders would be carried out. That's one thing his crew had in common with the SDF around this base - fierce loyalty to one another.

He followed Sae to the main building alone, his troopers busy setting up what needed to be done, mostly unloading spare equipment for the SDF operatives they expected to be transporting shortly.

"Right then." Allen continued to Sae, "What's your idea of this attack?"

"Ah, Ukyo-taichou, and you must be the commander of the new group that just came in," an elderly man, probably a veteren of World War II, greeted the pair as they entered a large conference room.
"This...uh, well he's not human, but he calls himself 'Allen'. They claim to be here to help," Sae explained.
"Ah, yes. Well allow me to introduce everyone. We are the commanders of the SDF operations in Shinjuku. I am General Sanada Hiroshi. This stately monk is Sakuraonji Kyutaro, the old bat over there..."
"HEY!" the 'old bat' interrupted.
"...is Ukyo Saeko, Ukyo-taichou's great aunt, and finally we have Kawasuma Tsukomu, civilian representative."

"Now let me cut right to the chase, for the past three weeks we've been doing battle with these demons. As it stands, we've already incurred losses rivaling those of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings combined. Until recently, we didn't even have communications. Now, our intel on the portals is thus: We know they are heavily guarded by demons that make the everyday riffraff you saw out in the city look like ants and cockroaches. It is also understood that humans who have been infected immediatly move for these portals. We need to close those portals, and the only way to do so lies within the portal itself."
"Now, we want to hit them fast and hard, and trust me when I say there are a LOT of demons at those portals. We want to send Ukyo-taichou's team into the portal with one of your tanks. The team will consist of...Ukyo Sae, Hyoumura Ryuji, Oda Eichiro, one miko of the leader's choice...likely Chihaya..., ZERO, any troops you, Mr. Allen, deem fit to enter the portal, and one other person: Takatani Chiyoko," the old man read from a list in front of him.
Sae turned pale when she heard the last name, but forced herself to understand that this was war. One question plagued her mind, however.
"Who or what is ZERO?" she asked.
"Allow me to answer that," a stubby, balding man and a little boy came into the room through a door to the side. The boy was pushing a dolly containing a large container, resembling a casket.
"ZERO is the prototype of my research team's work on Rikti technology. It uses modified teleportation technology to summon a vast array of weapons from an armory in Akihabara. Plus, it's not bad to look at!" the balding man explained, "Boy, throw the switch!"
The boy moaned and pressed a button on the container. With a loud hiss, the container opened up. Inside was...a girl. Her hair was white, and she was equipped with armor strongly resembling that of many other cyborg girls from various anime series.
"At least she's not wearing a maid costume..." Sae muttered.
A moment later, ZERO's eyes opened. They were clear blue, with a certain coldness about them.
Something bothered Sae though. The girl looked...familiar. Then she remembered.
"Yuka?!" she gasped.
"Indeed...that was her name before. She was comatose after the Rikti attack, and was listed as an organ donor," the doctor grinned evilly, "of course, she ended up donating everything but her bones to this project!"
"What...have you done?!" Sae demanded.
"I merely gave her new life! I tried to save her memories, but the human mind can be so...fickle," the scientist explained.
Sae was infuriated at the latest developments. First Chiyoko would be on their possible suicide mission, and then she finds out her friend whose injuries inspired her to volunteer for the SDF...has become some scientist's pet project.
Sae, tears streaming down her face, stormed out of the room.
"Anyway..." the old general began again, "We'll be ready to go tomorrow at noon. And don't worry about her, she's tough."
