wow this is some nice information this will make me better understand the game

As far as I've understood the Rularuu, they're not quite a dimension-hopping invading army.

They seem to be the CoH Representatives of the three Fates, or more "Creation, Order and Death", something faceted in most godlike beings, of which the three major players in the shards are said to be fractions of.

But just like their contemporary legends, one of them went mad, and spun out of control. The second just couldn't handle the stress of the first going so wild and all over the place and the third is suffering for it.

It seems to be tied into the dimension-hopping habits of Nemesis, and the mind-expanding properties of Superadyne. Humans, and their 'echoes', found their way into the world that the three god-fractions were building; One creating the parts, One making the raw parts into an actual world, and the third culling off that what is unneeded and taking it back to the first.
Humans were the unknown, and unplanned for, factor that turned the entire shard upside down, arrested its completion and made at least two of the three insane.

I could also be completely wrong.

Humanity 1 - 0 Rularuu. Go team!

This guide made me very happy. I've never been able to find the backstory on Hamidon before. I'd love to see one on zone history - especially Dark Astoria. What the heck happened there?

The cultists of the Banished Pantheon cast some spell on the area, covering it with mist, killing its inhabitants, and turning them into ghosts (the dissappearing citizens you can see walking there). Since the area used to house Paragon City's main graveyard, the cultists had plenty of bodies to turn into their zombies.

Many thanks for clearing all that up for me. But it left me with one question I'd want to know for roleplaying purposes: how many super-soldier sera are there? I think I know of four so far: Superadine, Rage, Excelsior, and whatever the drug is that the Council are using in the Cor Leonis project. Dyne, the original hallucinogenic steroid, I'm not counting as a super-soldier serum per se, but I guess it could count. Are there more known super-soldier drugs?

I thought Dyne and Superadine were the same thing. Just a slang term for it and the full name...or am I mistaken?

If you're mistaken, then so am I...I always assumed "dyne" was just the abbreviation.
I don't remember it ever being mentionned that Rage gives superpowers. I think it's just a drug the Tsoo sell (and that becomes toxic when mixed with superadyne). As for the Counsil's super-soldier program...I don't think we really know what it involves.
For that matter, the Family and some Crey agents seem to be augmented, but we don't know how. I guess it's just not relevant information...

The impression I got from talking to detective Joe Brogan was that the Paragon PD already knew about an existing drug called Dyne, but this Superadine stuff was new. Was I mistaken?

You can also find some information on the villain groups here.

Rage is basically a Superadine substitute, except that it makes the consumer a lot meaner and stronger until they burn out. And yes, mixing Rage and Superadine is lethal.

The Superadine/Dyne connection is weird. Some references indicate that "Dyne" came before "Superadine", others say that "Dyne" is short for "Superadine" (which is also spelled "Superadyne"), and some mobs call it "Dyne" and others call it "Supes". I'm choosing to interpret it as the writers getting confused, and there is only the one Superadine, and everything else are "street names". (After all, they don't seem to know how to spell "Ubelmann" either...)

Considering Excelsior comes from Crey, I'd say that the Crey enhancing chemicals are also of experimental natures, except that Crey cares not for FDA regulations. And I think Dreck does have an ongoing steady connection with Crey, considering how he managed to get the recipe for Excelsior (and that KhEm-SeT, the Freak supposedly in charge of making more, is a tank with no hands). Somehow, I don't think Crey would just give it to him if they didn't want something really, really big in return.

This guide is great, and has even been an aid to roleplaying. We wanted to RP researching various groups, but the game doesn't really allow for that.

Will you be adding the new clockwork background as well?

And also, what is up with the lost/rikti/hospital teleporter connection? I seem to remember there being a mission about that

Posted

Well, that mission showed that there was something more to the Lost, as they shouldn't be capable of such sophisticated things. Remember that you're not supposed to even meet the Rikti until the 30's and discover the Rikti/Lost connection for yourself.

As I remember, the Rikti were trying to use the teleporter network as a communication system. They already knew how it worked, as the teleporters were salvaged Rikti technology. (They didn't exist during the invasion, which is why so many heroes died during it.) The Lost were their pawns in the matter.

I never understood why they bothered using the Lost really as later in the game the Rikti walk around in the open like it's nothing, so their presence is hardly a secret.

Thank you VERY much for all the backstory information. I have played for over a year and trying to keep everything straight has been mind numbing.

I had done the really big (to me anyway) twist arcs: Crey, Rikti/Lost, Carnie, and DE. But the Council stories got very convoluted with a lot of arcs that I couldn't follow.

Major Stars to you!

*bump*

This guide is supremely awesome. Those of us who started with the release of CoV and are totally unfamiliar with the backstory of Paragon City sometimes have a hard time figuring everything out - things like this really help! Thank you!

Actually, in one story arc (I forget which), the freakshow/Dreck connection is explicit- Dreck is a former Crey employee, and he frequently trades use of the freakshow as an untracable way to destroy Crey's foes in exchange for more Excelsior. In a sense, Freakshow- at least those still controlled by Dreck- Is an extension- albeit a chaotic and destructive one- of Crey, though except for Dreck, they're all ignorant of that fact.
