Fire Tanking, the Infurno Way

On the Pinnacle server, my Fire/Fire Tanker Infurno recently hit level 50, and, deciding she wanted to give something back to the community, begun offering one-on-one tutoring sessions for Fire Tankers (with an emphasis on, but not restricted to, the Fire/Fire variant). This was partly intended as a way to get some roleplaying opportunities for my character with the Pinnacle RP Congress roleplaying group, but also a way to provide some much-needed instruction on Fire Tankers, who are historically a very tight build and one of the easiest to screw up. The following are the resources I've created so far. When and if I get ideas for more, I'll list them in responses to this post.

First, here's a story I wrote up out of the logs of my first such tutoring session with another player. It's fanfic, but it contains a lot of useful Fire Tanking advice as Infurno gives it.
<ul type="square">[*]Infurno's Informal Instructional Interlude I[/list]Shortly after that, I got to thinking about some minor shortcomings of Mephe's Fire/Fire Tanker Guide v2.0, which I use as the basis for my instruction. It's definitely informative and very well-written as far as it goes, but there are some areas where it may be a bit too technical for beginners, or may not explain enough. So I banged out three "lectures" from my character Infurno, with "help" from her Fire/Fire Blaster "sister" Tigerbright, to explore and expand upon its reasoning, as well as my own differences of opinion with the guide and strategies I've evolved that aren't covered there. In keeping with the roleplaying nature of the website, these were framed as how-to lectures shown on Paragon City's public-access cable TV network (though they're only done semi-in-character so as to be clearer with the explanations).

Great info and most entertaining! Would you entertain a question?

One of main characters is a Fire/SS Tank at level 14. I see that you mention using Blazing Aura as the main form of attacking, which will easily drop green &amp; blue enemies (true).

But in missions I almost exclusively am up against white &amp; yellow baddies (yes, I'm set on Heroic). At a mere 6 - 8 hit points ticking off at a time, it takes far too long for me to knock them out with just BA, so I have to rely on my secondary attack powers - and boy does SS suck endurance. Consume helps, but I don't have enough slots in it yet to use it often enough.

Any suggestions?

(Additional info - I know I have some build issues - BA is currently 4-slotted, with 2 Damage DOs, and 1 each of End Red and Accuracy TOs. I also made the mistake of 4-slotting both of my secondary attack powers, which is too soon, I know, but any suggestions are welcome at this point.)

not much you can do at low levels except grind it out. Getting in a small team will help (avoid big teams as your defense stinks).

At what levels should you try to start incorporating in the pool powers that give defense bonuses?

On live (ie I4) try to get tough by your late 20s, and weave by 28 or 30.

However, I5 is on test, and tough/weave take A LOT more end to run, and give you less protection. The other toggles give enen less defense. I am not certain, but I will probably 4 slot tough (3 DR and 1 end reducer) and skip weave entirely (assuming things go live as they are now).

actually with SO++ slotted into fire shield.........and 2 in tough u cap 91 (90%) smash/lethal. So, tough is still helpful......take weave as well....u need all the defense u can handle with a fire tank.......take conserver power epic as well......and 6 slot defense only into weave

u'll be sorry u didn't listen.

I've been doing some looking into Issue 5 on the training room, and I've come up with a preliminary guide to altering your build and play-style to cope with the changes. It's given by my Fire/Fire Blaster, Tigerbright, because Infurno was too depressed.

A fun read as always RM !

Poor Infurno *sniff*

Really like the suggestion to bind build up &amp; fiery embrace to the same key. I'm also afraid that weave will have to come out of the build, but I guess its truly a blessing in disguise, since we need the slots. I halfway want to drop taunt as well, for all the good it does. But I guess i will keep it and hope that it will be slightly bumped. I'm also keeping my fingers crossed for either a complete drop of the fear effect on burn, or at least (and more likely) a return to the I4 effect.

One minor typo toward the end, just before the build, you mention 'Healing Aura' but its evident you meant 'Blazing Aura'

Thanks for pointing out the typo. I've fixed it.

Yeah, I hope they do something to make Burn a little better. It just feels like the devs are engaging in a bit of overkill to me; rather than nerfing back one of the elements that enabled herding and burning, they're nerfing back all of them, meaning that some legitimate uses for certain powers that didn't involve herding are going by the wayside too.

great guide

For what it's worth, I've gone through the four lectures and added a few post-I5 notes to them so they're a bit more helpful to newbie Tankers now. Still have mixed feelings about the new Burn.

I need to start one on Guardian for my tank...Fire/Stone...hmm...nice

Are you going to post an I6 (ED) update?

Posted

I don't know. As extensive as the changes were, I'd basically have to start over and write an entirely new guide from scratch.

Short form is that the order of the powers should be about the same, but you're going to be slotting very differently.

From what I can see by the previous posts on this thread, your guides were very good. Unfortunately, the links aren't working. Could you possibly re-post the links from a reliable source?

Right...the RP Congress recently migrated to a different web board system and the links went all squirrelly.

Regardless, bear in mind that these guides are only up to date for I4/I5, and we're now in I8 and the changes have been HUGE. There's no mention of Enhancement Diversification, which came in with I6, for instance. Most of the advice on things like hunting and what powers to take still holds true in a general way, but slotting and the maximum numbers are completely out the window.

Yup, thanks a bunch. I'm good for slotting, and can work with suggestions from older guides. It's all about getting a feel for what a power needs most, I think. Thanks, again.

11/05 to 1/06. Wow. bringing the thread back from the dead. Nice

The kind that makes things happen

The kind that watch things happen

And then there are those of us who keep asking "WTH just happened!"

Bringing it back from the dead again.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I just came back to COx and started a Fire\SS tanker on Liberty last night. I know, I know...the links to Infurno's guides are dead. Just wanted to post for the heck of it.

I have a fire tank that I've been having trouble with and with the up coming respec I may just dust her off and try again. I don't have a good current basis for information about fire/fire tanks and then I saw this. It's a shame that all the guides links are dead, please repost them. Thank you.
