a little tribute to War Witch...

Hmmm, I know Lightwave can do what you're describing fairly easily, but I wouldn't know exactly how to with obf files (I don't think bringing .obj files would preserve the morph data to begin with, but I'm not sure). Also, buying Lightwave for a single task like that would probably be extreme overkill.

Can you post a screenshot of the 2 objects (the modeled object and the flat mesh that you want to have the contour of the first one)? It might make exactly what you're trying to do a bit clearer.

Arctalus - lvl 50 Ice/Energy blaster
Crey Avenger - lvl 48 Fire/Rad controller

Yeah, from a Poser perspective the morph targets are external decoration on the OBJ data - the OBJ format has no intrinsic support for such things.

One can, of course, export a morphed object as another OBJ file and then load that back as a morph target. This means you could export each morph and apply the same external transformations on it, but that can get really painful if there are many morphs (like on a morph-based face mesh).

I can get some time on a workstation with Lightwave, so I might look into how one would do this there. The little I did fool with LW I never really got into it, since I don't do this professionally and I found the Xwindows-ish interface somewhat foreign. But if The Tailer doesn't fit my bill it's good to know I might have a way to do what I want with Lightwave.

How the hell can this thread still be in here two years later?

Wow, how did this get dug up?

Ironically, I find this recently-bumped old thread while I'm browsing the forums as I wait for my Poser render. Heh. Most of the conversation, I just find depressing, since I spend HOURS trying to get Poser to make the picture I have in mind. And I actually think some of it doesn't turn out half bad. Anyway, more power to you 3D Beethovens out there. I'll just have to content myself with an electroic keyboard and a sequencer, as it were.

Oh well. Nothing to see here. These aren't the droids you're looking for. Move along.

Well I still think it's cool that someone took the time to work on a pic, anyway. All the rest of this discussion was:

"Blah blah blah War Witch blah blah blah blah, render blah blah blah Poser blah blah blah stuff I can't pronounce blah blah blah."

So needless to say, I was super really impressed.

Um... I didn't dig this 2-year old thread up.

It's not art until you draw it in orphan blood, anyway.

It´s art if it involves Orphean blood :O

I never knew, I allways thought it was foreplay.

So I take it the 3D guru's have left the scene. Any new artists out there have any suggestions for free or inexpensive programs for a starting artist?

Well, DAZ Studio is still free, and is better than ever; DAZ also gives away several of the most popular base models. The Victoria figure mentioned earlier in the thread is now completely free (the V4 version came out recently and is not free, but the V3 is).

http://www.daz3d.com

There's also a large repository of tutorials to help you learn, and if you check out http://artzone.daz3d.com there's a community of people with blogs/galleries/etc and a chat, and they're fairly newb friendly.

Several people at DAZ are also fans of the game.

*waves an enthusiastic hi to War Witch* Sorry, had to get that outta my system

And to answer your question Kenja, we've got a few three-dee artists around here. Post a seperate thread with the questions you have and they'll tell ya what they know =D

Even DAZ studios uses Modo to create their characters - theres a reason

heh. Amazing. At least he eventually attributed the work correctly.

You surely won that fight and in no way looked like a bitter, ranting type person!

Nobody can 'win' when the response to 'you're not presenting original work--you're presenting someone else's work that you modified and implying it's yours' is 'RAaaaraghalghalglhflarbl ur troll hatessss it hatessssss filthy stormssssss preciouss'.

And yeah, I'm extremely bitter. I can't believe dressing up someone else's mesh to imitate a 3rd person's drawings is considered 'art', let alone the rants that followed about how what he did is more effort than drawing fan art. I'm so glad what I and other artists try to do for a living is considered so much easier than modifying someone else's model.

The OP played this 'you hurt my feelings' thing and then started talking about how rude I am. Meanwhile, he's ripping off work, not doing anything remotely resembling art, and showing pretty clearly that he has no respect for art or artists. And then, to make it absolutely *perfect*, WW comes in and says 'I like it anyway'.

If he'd put up the fact that he started with someone else's model in his original post, then, at least, I wouldn't have had the energy to criticize yet another poser picture, standing in for the costume creator.
