A Respec / Respecification Guide

[*] If you are going to be exemplaring, make sure to take that into account when you select your powers.
[/ QUOTE ]
Quick note, it's pretty much been confirmed by statesman that PvP arenas feature auto-exemplar so that if a level 50 fights a level 20, the 50 will be lowered to level 20.
So even if you don't plan on exemplaring, but you do plan on doing PvP, choose your powers wisely
The Respec With Smaller Teams
You do not have to have a 4 person team or larger to finish the respec. You will have to have at least four to start, but if people drop off, or even immediately quit after joining you can complete the respec with less than four people. The number of enemies scales, so with your two or three person team you will face less enemies than a four or more person team.
Soloing the Respec
If you want to do the smallest number of people; one, then you must form a four person team and have at least one person log off. If all three people quit the TF you will find your self booted from the TF. Having one person log off keeps the TF active. The person that logs off can log into another hero and continue playing. Soloing the Respec TF is possible, but it can be extremely difficult.
What about the free one? Please forgive my ignorance. I had left CoH for a while, and now that I am back when I log in it tells me I have 1 respec available. To whom do I go to proceed? I went to the level 24 contact, but she wanted me to do the trial. There must be a way to use the one I have first?
The free one.. you dont have to go anywhere. Just type /respec when ready and tada!
Well gosh. That was almost too easy. Many thanks!
I didn't know about the free one! I just did the Respec trial but I haven't visited the contact yet. If I use the free one will I hold the other until I visit the contact. Also will it work the other way around?
Zanithar lvl 26 ill/rad controller
Yes, you'll hold the other one untill you actually use it. Just think of earning a respec like throwing somthing in a bucket. If you take one thing out of the bucket, all the other stuff that was in there is still in it.
Ok, not the best analogy, but its the best I can come up with right now
The repecs stack, so you will NOT lose your free one for cashing in an earned or vice-versa.
Bah 'Frost' beat me too it... and a good analogy BTW...
Make a man a fire and keep him warm for the day, SET a man on fire and keep him warm for the rest of his life.
Incarnates: K'lir(Fire/Dark Corr):Hot-House Flower(Plant/Fire Dom):Kinrad X(Kin/Rad Def):Itsy-Bitsy Spider(Crab):Two Ton Tony(Mace/WP Broot):Teeny Weeny Widow(Fortunata/Widow) : Zeroth Law (Ice/Fire Tank)
Ok I typed in the command for the free respec and it said that I didn't have one. Is there a lvl you need to be to get the free one or did they dake it away because I know I didn't use it?
The free respec was given out when I3 went live. I think that was mid Janurary. If you hadn't made your characters before then, you didn't get a free respec.
Guess I just screwed up bigtime. I did it last night, choose respec out of the awards offered, then went to bed. Figured I'd think about it through the day and make sure I get it right. I went to the contact today, and she tells me I need 3 more people like I'm trying to start a TF.
I was under the impression that you could keep these and didn't have to use them the second (or there abouts, that the mission was over). I wasn't the leader, is it just the leader that actually gets this, or everyone invovled.
EDIT: Seems things may be in order, when I logged back in there was a text line in the chat box saying I had one unclaimed respec. Think I will do the test server thing like all the smart players. I'll be back here to whine and edit again if things are still not working.

You don't need to visit the contact to use the respec. The contact just gives you the mission to earn the respec. Once you have it, which apparently you do, you can use it at any time and any place just by typing /respec.
And yeah, doing it on the test server is a very good idea.

I typed /respec just to see what would happen and it gave me a message to see Jack Wolfe in Galaxy, that sure made it easy. I'm glad I tested it out, because I was really right with what I wanted, great to know ahead of time.

All existing characters were given a free respec shortly after issue 3 came out. Since the devs didn't want 375+ heroes cramming into the hero corp building in GC (if you'd seen what happened on test you'd know why, man what a mess) they added the slash command that works ONLY for the free respec. All earned respecs must be redeemed in person with Jack Wolfe.

Huh. I had no idea. I remember the problem they had on test, and I knew how it worked for the freespec. I didn't realize they left it like that for other respecs. Well, that saved me from a bit of confusion the next time I /respec.

RE-Respec question (as of Apr 17th, 2005)
Wanted to toss this out there, since it's on my mind I suppose it's on others as well...
I've a lv 50 character who has used all their Respecs. With the Arena out on test and I4 on the verge, just wanted to ask if anyone has heard about a future Free Respec OR the possibility of redoing the Lv 50 Respec in order to earn another power adjustment.
I believe - though I can't recall where - that the devs stated a free respec would come along with each Update.
Any truth to this Posi, States, or Cuppa... or anyone else for that matter?
I wanted to try my guy in the Arena Respec'd, but cannot do that currently... but would like an option to do so. And if anyone could make that happen like.... tomorrow... tha'd be greeeeeeeeeeaaat...
Thanks everyone!

Note also that depending on your level, selling back your enhancements may be a big deal.
At level 47, I'll have a lot of 45++ Enhancements that will go to waste if I just replace them with 50s. With a properly-timed respec, they won't go to waste. I can even save 10 nifty ones to give away.
And save that free respec if you can!
The fact that they can be used on demand makes them uniquely useful.
At one point I completely turned around a failing Task Force by spending 5 minutes with /respec. With those famous heroes Recall Friend and Mutation on our team things suddenly improved!
And yes, DO YOUR RESPECS ON TEST FIRST. Over and over if needed. You'll be glad you did!
Thanks for the guide! Good hunting!
The robot revolt begins!
I really don't think the devs promised a free respec with each release. In fact, I think they said the opposite. Of course, they might give one anyhow. I expect a lot of people will ask for one. I think the idea of having the level 50 respec be repeatable makes sense.

Also remember to bring a Earth/Force Field controller on the first respec. Hate to give props for my AT, but drop EQ and Gasses on the reactor core and bubble the core itself and wait till th end of the attack

@Angus.Black
Well it looks like there is a free respec with this update. So for those of you who have respec questions about the free respec, the information in here about the previous respec also applies.
Some other notes;
If you had kept your free respec from I3, this new respec overwrote it. For more information see the official post.

There are many guides to the respec TF, they will be linked in a subsequent post

Where are these links to the Respec guides? We plan to do one today, the level 24 Respec.
Any hints and suggestions for a successful mission?

Sorry about that, I had planned to add some of the ones I had seen when i wrote the post, but after a couple days of searching, I found that they fell victim to forum maintainence and there was no way for me to go back and edit. There are a couple in the guide to guides, but not much on the 24-33 respec. My best advice to you would be to get the Shield generators first and early. Since you can have instances where two or more overlap and all you can do is get hit. Watch out for the AoE as well, since you will be seeing a lot of it come your way.

For the cash strapped amongst us:
## If possible respec at the same level you'd buy your new SOs, before you buy your new enhancements.
After you choose your powers and the number of slots in each one your current enhancements get put in a big bucket for reallocation. If you don't allocate them to your powers or your ten loose enhancement slots they will be sold at what seems to be around the price you'd buy them from a vendor.
So, by repecing at level *2 or *7:
- Old enhancements you'd effectively lose when you replace them give you back a bucket of cash
- If you're doing a radical respec and need to buy a lot of new enhancements they are the best value you can get as they're the highest level you can use and will last a full seven levels - all the way to your next SO purchase.
## Consider turning off SG Mode
Definition
Respecification, also known as respec (or incorrectly respect), is the process a character goes through to recreate themselves. The ability to respec your character is given after successfully completing a respec task force. There was a free respec given to all characters that existed on the server around the time of Issue 3 as well. The possibility still exists for more free respecs if large changes are made to an arch-type or power set, but there has been no indication of future free respecs at this time. The respec allows you to change the power selections of your hero, while remaining the same arch type with the same power sets, you are allowed to completely change power pools. The best analogy of a respec is that of a hero that has the experience of their current level, but has never trained, this hero selecting all their powers from level 1 on. The same rules that applied as you level naturally apply here; perquisite powers, order selection, and etc.
Respec Availability
The respec task force is first available at level 24. You may do the respec task force as many times as you like, but you are only allowed to select the respec reward once from level 24-33. At level 34-43 you are allowed to select the respec reward again, for your second respecification. At level 44-50 you are allowed to select the respec as your reward for the third time. If you receive the respec, you do not have to use it immediately. Respecs do stack, so if you have one unused one, and complete the trial, choosing respec as a reward for the second time, you will not lose any previous respecs. This stacking also applies to the opportunity to select respec as a reward. If you do not do the mission 24-33, you can run the mission twice 34-43 and select respec as a reward. NOTE: If you do not do the respec in a given range, you are not required to exemplar back to that level in order to receive your reward.
Rewards
When you complete the task force, you are offered your choice of reward. There are several Single Origin enhancements available, or you can choose the respecification reward (following the rules above) If you select the respec award, you will receive the right to respec, as well as an accolade; Received the Stalwart Medallion (first award), Earned the Statesman Star (second award), Awarded the Freedom Cross (third trial). To claim your earned respec, you must visit Jack Wolfe.
Contact Locations
The level 24-33 respec contact (Jane Hallaway) is in Independence Port The level 34-43 respec contact (Captain James Harlan) is located in Founders Falls. The level 44-50 respec contact (Major Richard Flag) is located in the Ritki Crash Site. The Respec contact (Jack Wolfe) is located inside Freedom Corps HQ in Galaxy City
Respec Process
Once you collect your reward, you will have to talk to the respec contact in order to redeem it. When you speak to the contact he will ask you if you wish to respec. Saying yes will take you to a power selection screen. It will be as if you are level 1 all over again, where you pick from 1-2 powers in your primary, and must take the first power in your secondary. From there you continue selecting powers, and pools up to your current level. The respec does not tell you which level you are selecting your power for, it will tell you simply how many powers you have left. In turn you will also be able to pick your power pools, following the existing rules for Power Pools. Keep in mind, the order you select your powers will have an effect on your hero if you exemplar or use flashback mode. Once you are finished selecting powers you will move to slotting those powers. You follow the same rules of slotting as you do in normal leveling. The order that you slot the powers appears to have no effect in exemplaring at this time. After you are done slotting your powers, you are taken to an enhancements screen. Here you can place the enhancements you had before back into the powers, sell them, or keep them in inventory (as per existing rules, you can hold no more than 10.) If you choose to sell your enhancements, you will receive the price for them as if you were selling them in the store of that type. After you are finished the enhancement screen you will receive a notice, this will be your last chance to back out of the respec.
Respec Task Force Rules
The respec TF is similar to other task forces, it requires a minimum number of heroes to start the TF, in this case four. The other rules are also in effect; cannot speak to contacts, if you quit you cannot rejoin, and etc.
Respec Best Practices
Power respecification is a powerful tool, it should be done with caution as you can make the game very difficult for yourself if you respec in haste. Some recommendations for respecting your character are as follows[*] Use the test server; Copy your hero over to test before visiting the respec contact. That way you can see how things will work out before you are locked in. [*] Plan before you use your respec, having a map of the powers and pools you want will keep you from forgetting to select a travel power. There are a number of planners that will help with this, or you can even use pen and paper. [*] If you are going to be exemplaring, make sure to take that into account when you select your powers.[*] Respecs are limited, so conserve them if at all possible. While a free respec was issued, to base your characters future life on another freebie may lead to a hero you wont play much for a while.
Respec TF Best Practices
There are many guides to the respec TF, they will be linked in a subsequent post. One consideration to make is in regards to the difficulty slider. There have been reports that it does in fact have bearing on the Respec TF. Make sure you know what you are set as before you join or start a respec TF.
