Should we change the unofficial RP server?

Well, I accidently started a troll earlier tonight asking a question...And from the comments people made...I thought of something...

Basically, Virtue has been overpopulated by people who just started a character on it, because of the sole reason of player online. It's gotten quite bogged down, almost at some points to the level of the beta server...(But that could just be because everone's the same level)

Has there been any talk about changing the server base? And if we DID want to change...could we move character over?

Thanks all.

Yes, there has been talk of moving it, but since you can't move characters between servers, the idea hasn't gotten a great deal of support.

I should also note that one of the devs stated on the main board that the problems with Virtue are not related to character load.

I know that I'm quite happy being on Virtue myself.

Yes, Poz stated that the problems with Virtue have nothing to do with the server load.

If you did want to change, you could... but you would not be able to move your characters, that's not how these games work. And you can bet that you wouldn't be moving the entire community, most people would stay on Virtue now that they're there and established.

I'd sit tight and try to be patient, the game just launched so it's likely to have some lag and crowding issues. The odds are some of the players who have no particular reason to be on Virtue will wind up moving on, anyway. There's no sense in trying to move a burgeoning community over some problems that will likely wind up fixed in the very near future, anyway.

Well..we can only hope.

Yea, I don't want to move myself...but likely the same will be said of everyone when they get to level 12...

I say we move it to Freedom. There are a lot of people on there, but no server problems.

Besides, that's where my level 14 character is... I'm lonely.

Wasn't Guardian supposed to be the backup RP server?

I'm against a move. We're just now starting to establish ourselves on this server and I don't particularly look forward to starting over.

Heck no! I would have been o.k. with it pre-launch, but I've created a character, leveled him to 13 and started a Supergroup complete with website. Don't you DARE change it. Just RP your hearts out, and eventually maybe people will just get sick of us and go somewhere else.

Well time to try to get my gf to go back to Virtue I guess...she got fed up with trying to get logged on one night and we moved to liberty. I'm gettin sick of playing with a bunch of people that only treat the game like it's any other MMO though...maybe if I bribe her...

Bah! I'm DONE with this server! I really should have known better, too. None of these "unofficial" RP servers ever work, anyway. I mean, EQ even went so far as to title a server "RP Perferred" with special rules, and that didn't work.

Today, I asked a question in the Broadcast channel in character. Normally, I don't use the BC channel since it is RP taboo, but no one was near me to answer what i needed to know. Immediately after the answer, someone typed "boy, do i hate RPers". Right after that someone chimed, "me too". That was the last straw. I went ooc and asked the person why they would make a character on a server that the players deemed as their unofficial home to RP in, and then [censored] when they did it. Boom! The gates opened to a flame-fest that I've seen too many times on this server. RPers vs. non-RPers. Wanna know what the funny thing is? The non- RPers were drowning out RPers like 3 to 1.

So, after a few minutes of wasting my time in a non-winnable argument, I've decided that playing on a server that has as many latency issues as this one just isn't for me. (Today was particularly bad with a few actual disconects which has never happened to me.) I'll be moving to one of the less crowded servers and to hell with the RP. I'll be leaving my chars here in case things change, but I don't see that happening. Yes, I have level 20 chars I will be leaving. Unlike others, I have no fears about starting over. Its a chance to redo the things you've done wrong, anyway. I'd like to wish my RP brethren good luck. Unfortunately, you're not going to get the experience you were hoping for...we ALL were hoping for in beta.

My my, giving up so easily?

I've had the opposite experience, why just today I teamed up with four other Rpers I found roaming around and we hunted down CoTs. We all Rped the whole time, except for in team chat which we used for stuff like "need to pee!" or "damn phone!", stuff like that.

First of all, even as an RPer I NEVER Rp on broadcast. Just because WE deem Virtue as the unofficial RP server doesn't mean everyone is going to know that. There are lots of players who never even visit these forums. Also, sometimes it's nice to talk in OOC a little. If you ask me BOTH forms of playing the game get old after a while and switching them up is a good idea.

I'm happy with Virtue, it's getting better connectivity-wise for me and I've found a whole bunch of Rpers.

Maybe you're just looking in the wrong places.

I didn't even know virtue was supposed to be the RP server (I visited the forums alot in beta but not so much since release).

I'm all for role-play (which is alot more fun as a super hero than as an elf or something) and have made my character on virtue now as well.

My question at this point though, considering the supposed connectivity issues and supposed lack of role players: is it worth the time? Or should I just stick with my character on Pinnacle? I would hate to start over for RP only to find there is no RP and the server sucks. Or worse, to have it moved by the "rp community"

I only got Skyminder up to SL 3 tonight after reading this, so could someone who has been on there for a while give me the real lowdown?

Hello All,
Boy I missed out on that, I might switch to Virtue for Rp, My Main character is On Justice, Personally I rp anywhere, thats just what I do. So I'm new to the whole MMMO thing. This was the only way to even get me to consider doing this. I say that NC soft scored big with this We were glad to be able to beta for the last bit before it went live. I was only security level 3 during the invasion, woke up in the hospital so many times it made my head hurt. But I did make security level 4 before they finally shut us down for the wait. See you on line, Hope to RP with you all.

So Virtue is a role-playing server? How disappointing. I've got a very nice character with a personality and a story - note, neither of them my own, and that's bound to be worth something - on Champion.

While I read these boards before I got the game, and knew Virtue was supposed to be the unofficial RP server, when I began to run around Virtue with my young defender, I never saw RP other than my own.

Then my hubby ran into connectivity issues trying to join me on Virtue, so we up and moved our characters over to Liberty. We have two other friends there now and we are having a blast RPing with each other. A few strangers join in now and then.

This is my second MMORPG, I have found from my first (Camelot) that to not set yourself up for disappointment with strangers that don't respond or cooperate with your desire to RP is the best way to enjoy the game.

Sure I enjoy RP and will always do so in public chat, and I hope to run into others in Liberty who enjoy it as well. We also goof on team channel OOC. And when I run into an RPer in public chat you bet I am adding them onto my friend's list and will look for them next time as well. But I see plenty of OOC chat in broadcast that I don't really read it at all.

So no matter which server we are in, I think we RPers are the minorty, and likely have to stick with those we know to continue the immersion. But I think fun can be had anywhere.

I hope to find some RPers in Liberty soon!

I think I as well as RP'ers everywhere would agree that in order to have a good RP server you must be in RP at all times. That means when anyone asks where everyone is from you need to say where you are from in the game and not where you are at in real life.
I have been guilty of this when I am not thinking about it. If someone starts talking RL to you just act confused and ask what he is talking about like he has the plague.

First, honestly.. I’ve played every day since the server came online and there has only been one evening when Virtue seemed to be having problems and was taken offline for a short time to be rebooted. Apparently everyone and their mother must have chosen that moment to try and log in at, because now I keep running into stories referencing the day people weren’t able to get onto Virtue. Myself and my friends that play on this server have never had an issue getting onto Virtue except for that one single time, and we were online when they announced they were taking it offline, so we logged off for 20 minutes and that was about the extent of our painful experience.

I know nobody likes to hear someone say they’re not having problems with connections or lag when you yourself are having those problems, but you have to ask yourself.. if the server was really having issues, wouldn’t everyone on that server be having issues? The truth is they’re not, and isolated cases are more likely to be issues with ISP’s, a temporary problem on the net between you and the servers, etc. Things basically beyond Cryptic’s control.

Poz has stated that the problem Virtue had that particular evening had nothing to do with overcrowding. If you go by the server dots, Virtue does seem to be up there with the most actively used servers. However, those same dots show me it’s not the most active server.

As for the role-playing, if you’re expecting to log on Virtue and see everyone on their best superhero behavior, you’re going to be disappointed. It is rare to see people openly role-playing in public areas, but it does happen from time to time and thus there are opportunities to jump in and get involved. What Virtue possibly does offer is a higher probability of running into role-players, as I wouldn’t be surprised if at least a few hundred people from the forums heard about the unofficial role-playing designation and chose to make it their home, including some role-playing supergroups. That’s a few hundred people out of however many thousands are on the server though, including those that don’t role-play and those that do but have no idea a forum community picked Virtue as an unofficial role-playing spot. Of course, if more role-players make Virtue their home, then that always increases the odds that you’ll find a group to role-play with.

One personal slightly-off topic note to add: I never mind exchanging some role-playing banter with someone, but it is a rare day that I initiate a conversation with someone I don’t know in the game. And nine out of ten times when someone starts a conversation with me, it’s usually something like “nice bio!”. And while the compliment is appreciated.. my limited imagination honestly finds nothing to work with there, and all I can really offer back is a thanks.

And that can be frustrating, because I’m thinking “well if the person took the time to bother reading the biography, chances are they’re at least slightly interested in role-playing”, and yet I’m feeling like I have nowhere to go with their comment.

My point being, I think a lot of players miss opportunities to role-play. If, for instance, you like another character’s biography enough that you’re going to point it out to them, try approaching the compliment differently than just an OOC comment. Perhaps saying something like “You’re SuperDude aren’t you? I’ve heard a few things about you. Quite a colorful history you have, if you believe the stories you read in the paper.”. That definitely provides another player with a springboard to launch off of and go into a role-playing conversation with you.

LOL and this is why there is no 'Official' RP server, because if there was one then it would bog down and leave others servers empty, Horizons had many official RP servers and a few non RP servers and that seemed to work.

Because of the load on Day one (preorder) I created and leveled 3 characters to around 4th before I could even log on to virtue.

Freedom is where myself and a few others have found home, and RPing is where the heart is

I feel your pain here folks and after a week of disconnects and trying to log on only to lag out 10 minutes later I decided to move our Supergroup ove rto Guardian.

Since the move a few days ago on Guardian we have had almost 0 problems. A little latency lag here and there, but stable. No drops and very few lags at all. The server laod also stays in the medium load which is ideal.

As the server load starts leveling out things will get a little bit better, but there idea of server management is letting everyone pick and thats made server laods way to bad to get good response otu of. Unless they are going to upgrade the servers to handle the load, nothing will change. Thus far they have stuck to the company line of "It's not the server load", which is bull as it's easy to see from the front indicators which servers are overloaded. Had the same problems in beta and they have not changed. Some servers were built early on and I don’t think fully updated when they made changes.

Either way – we are over on Guardian for good now.

Sorry to hear of the bad experiences by some folks trying to RP. Bottom line – some folks just don’t appreciate it and others just don’t care to understand. We are an RP group, but the emphasis is on having fun. Just getting settled in over on Guardian.

So if your looking to make a move – send a shout to Dr Midnight Phd and come join the The Midnight Society!

Since this weekend, I've had zero latency issues in Virtue.

And for the fella who posted a question on Broadcast, it's generally accepted that the Broadcast channel is OOC anyway (as is pretty much any channel other than Local). I hardly pay attention to anything in gray anyway...

And the Virtue RP'ers don't expect everyone on the server to RP. They simply wanted increased chances of finding other RP'ers.

if everyone left Virtue for another server, it would be the same there. All the RPers went to Virtue. I also have a character on Pinnacle and Victory as well, although I don't play them as much, but I RP there too. Perhaps making two unofficial RP servers may help though.
