Roleplaying Server

On a related point, is there a server specific message board? If not, anyone know if one is in the works? I was on the RP server in EQ, and the message board was one of the main focal points for getting to know people and fostering a sense of community of RPers. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like they are going to accomodate server specific forums here.

If no one else gets to it first, I've been considering putting together a Virtue server forum on ezBoard. In addition to serving the usual functions for such, it'll be tuned towards RP and specifically inter-SG RP.

This assumes, of course, that ezBoard comes up any time in the near future...

PM me if I can help, FreelanceWizard. I set up a few boards on EZBoards for EQ, so I would love to help you get one off of the ground for Virtue.

While on the thought of the unofficial RP server (hey Tenebre!), it occurred to me that we don't really have a comprehensive listing of the various RP super groups on the server. Is there a possibility in the future of some kind of listing, so we solo heroes can check out the groups to see who to go for?

[/ QUOTE ] Great idea - anyone know of any RP-oriented supergroups?

No doubt there are some already in existence, as well as some that are works in progress. I've got two -- designed to be complimentary for conflict RP -- in the works, but there's that whole "getting a character to 10" thing and also the whole "finding people" thing.

As for existing RP guilds on our server, I'm aware that 1st Fist of Light is supposed to be on Virtue now, for those who are familiar with them.

Hm, I'm glad I found this forum. I was looking for the right server to make my character on, hopefully Virtue will have plenty of RPers on it.

If anyone is interested in a experienced RPer and MMOGer then give me a message, I'm very much in the market for a role playing Supergroup.

I'll be playing as Obsidian Guard if anyone wants to contact me.

Yeah, I agree with what was said above that we don't own the server. It's important to note that it's very much *unofficial*. A bunch of us in the last weeks of beta voted and decided we wanted to name Virtue the Unofficial RP Server and I think that's where most of us have ended up. However, there's no reason to expect that everyone on the server is going to be RPing 100% of the time nor that everyone even knows anything about some unofficial RP server.

For my part, I intend to RP, but I'm not always interested in being IC and "actively RPing" 100% of the time. Sometimes, I just want to get to my next level. Sometimes I'm just soloing and I'm following my little storylines, zooming from one mission to the next, and maybe RPing a bit in my head (interior monologue kind of thing). If that's the case, you're not going to notice anything different about me from anyone else around me. Also, I guess I don't assume that any random person I run into on the streets is going to want someone to come up to them and start randomly RPing with them. If someone says something to me, in-character, I'll certainly RP back. But I imagine I'll rarely initiate except with people I know (for example, those in the RP SuperGroup I'm a part of....see my sig, but be warned that our forums are EZBoard and are apparently down right now).

However, each and every character I create has a full bio in place before I leave the Tutorial. I think that's one way you can identify some RPers...check their bios and see if:

A) They have one at all
B) It looks to be a serious one and not just some random silliness (though, who knows, random silliness might still = RPer)

I think that one of the best ways you're going to find consistent RP is to hook up with a RP SG. That way you can set up teams over SG channel and RP your way through missions together. And you'll know everyone there is in it for the RP.

Ah, I feel your pain with the controller issue, you see I play a Gravity/Storm Controller on Virtue and have had someone jump in and take down the enemies I have been working on for ten minutes (which by the way does not bother me, I am just friendly and move on...never know who you will end up making friends with . Thankfully with this power set I have a new and wonderful solution...Dimension Shift! Now if I am working on a large group or just a few tough baddies and someone decides they would like to take them off of my hands I can just phase shift the enemies

...Ummm, on a side note this was a response to a much earlier post in this thread, wow it took a long time to show up on the board

Project: Rebirth is a RP-friendly group that is always looking for people who enjoy developing the personality and background of their characters. I'm pleased to say that we've gathered a great group of people sofar, and will be recruiting when May comes around (we've got a temporary freeze because of the Beta-to-live transformation.), so if you want a great group of people to RP with, this is your place!

(Note, the EZboards are down for maintenance at the present, so make sure you check back often!)

Although RPing can be everywhere IMo it would be a shame if it devolved into small little groups RPing only with each other. That kind of defeats the purpose of a MM game doesnt it?

I have two suggestions i believe in strongly:

(1) RP IN PUBLIC. I've seen too many people boith in game and (by implciation) falling back on team chat to RP. While that may give you a nice insulated RP experience it does nothing to help foster an RP environment as a whole anmd could just as easily be done on any server.

(2) RP ON VIRTUE. Sure you could do team-rp anywhere but again the whole purpsoe of choosing an RP sevrer is to try to get a conentrated enough group of RPers to create and foster RP as the default activity on teh server. if you are spreading yourselves out across all the servers it aint never gonna happen.

My 2 cents, YMMV

Let me throw in two more suggestions:

RP with other supergroups. Come up with a background and faction orientation for your SG -- a character concept, almost -- and discuss story arcs with other SGs. Conflict RP will be difficult until more dark to outright villainous SGs come into play, but bear in mind that this is still only the day after launch; the RP groups need time to form.

RP on the forums. There's an unofficial Virtue server forum in the works right now, and when it comes up, RPing there will be a great way to meet other RPers.

Proactiveness! It makes me feel warm and fuzzy (not to mention lazy... ). I'm willing to lend a hand with anything RP-board related if it's needed; I need something to do until my retail copy arrives anyway. Hit me up if you need graphics or anything.

Sounds like an excellent plan! Can't wait for that...

I think that it would be great to have some kind of unofficial meeting area in a few of the zones too. Someplace that RPers could hang out, shoot the breeze, join like-minded teams... that kind of thing...

You know what I'm really excited for? I "heard" that one day Super Groups would be allowed to "buy" buildings and convert them to Fortresses, of Super Hero Bases of Operation... now THAT is true to the comic book veign and something I will definitely keep an eye out for...

Hey guys;
Just wanted to throw in my support & hope that I see you all on Virtue & we get some good RP going on. I'll check out the unofficial boards & am glad to help anyway I can. I just posted the origin of my character, Mr. Mister, earlier, so I'm anxious to hook up with my fellow RPers on Virtue & the forums.

-See ya' round!

Not a single person I've played with knows that virtue is "the roleplaying server"

I'm only on it because on sunday it was the only server I could get on at all around 1 pm.

I'm not much of a stickler anyway. To me nearly everyone in these games does roleplay, especially in a semi-modern day one like COH. The only stuff I call really not roleplaying is if "treeman" says, "Sec I am trying to play my playstation two at the same time, in real life. "

One thing I don't get about people who call themselves roleplayers, what the heck is the point of saying that then going about going:

(ooc
(IC

If you are going to clarify when you are or aren't, either in game or on a message board, its pointless since I see people do both in the same amounts without clarifying it. Makes zero difference to me if treeman mostly roleplays then mentions his dog or mostly roleplays then says something (ooc) about his dog.

In fact, since I'm on virtue, I'm going to make it a point to call anyone I see do that out. "What do you mean by this OOC, fellow super hero!???"

Does anybody have any idea what Virtue's population is like. I'm working on a super reporter and would like lots of people to potentially interact. I'm looking for a combination of RP minded ness as well as population.

What do you guys think of the status of Virture so far.

I must admit that I am guilty of not being in character at all times. But I do tend to RP now more than when I was in Beta. I think when our SG gets everyone back together (we still have folks waiting on games to be delivered.) we'll settle into character more

Well, I'm somewhat of a pessimist but it seems to me virtue is as populated as most servers and I don't see anymore roleplaying than on Guardian or any of them.

That reporter thing sounds like fun though, go for it

well it has to do with kill counting. if a person has to get 10 hellions and all they have found in the last hour is 9 hellions. That last one is a deal breaker. the lack of ability to find a specific foe can be attributed to bad searching bugs in game or other characters on same mission killing them off so quick they do not have time to respawn. So kill stealing does become a hassle under the mission count areas!!!!!

I dunno, based on your posts so far I'd say you're doing a great job of roleplaying a Troll...

Is Guardian still the backup RP server? Virtue's either down or full, so I made a new character on Guardian.

See I totally bogle at the whole "kill steal" thing... I've had people rush in to try and "get a piece" if they're over their heads, I'll step back and laugh as I let them take the agro (focus of the attacks)

[/ QUOTE ]

All too often this has not been the case for me. I have never had somebody come in and kill steal an almost dead MOB. In every instance I've had somebody one shot (usually somebody a level or two higher than me) something that hasn't hit half health yet.

Either I get a blaster type who lets of their most deadly attack OR I have a meleer who runs in and smacks the MOB dead in one shot while I was waiting for a DoT or for my power to recharge (this happened all the time with my controller).

Heck, just yesterday I pulled a group of 3 with an AoE, just to have somebody three levels higher than me run up and kill two of them before I could react.

[/ QUOTE ]

Really? See I've never seen people bother to do that.. I mean if they wipe out a bunch of stuff that's one shot kills, odds are they're gray to them.. no xp. I guess I'd agree with a no "jerk" rule.

As for counting towards mission kills, I don't think that's the way it works. I came up on a guy outnumbered solo 3 to 1 and I needed 10 skulls, and he was hair lined from dead, and the skulls were only about half dead. I nuked them all, trying to save the guy the death tax, and I got no kills for my mission. I can only assume the kills go to most damage. The guy was grateful to say the least, but I've seen people get very upset over being similiar. I actually gave an Enhance in form of apology to a guy who was 5 to 1, and swore he had a rack full of Heals, but I saw him hairline to death.
I've since taken up the practice of asking and waiting, even if they die from it. If I'm being really nice, I'll just use Web Grenades and then ask them, since no damage dealt, equals no XP, unless we're teamed.
I still think it's too much stress over very rare instance, with exception to Jerks Blasting Grey Cons for absolutely no reason.
