Roleplaying Server
This is good to know.
I might have a problem on Virtue though with some missions. I know that when I'm running around and there is a purse theif, I'll attack them. But if theres a group of thugs just standing there (with no victims) I wont touch them... I mean, should they be beat up and sent to jail for just hanging out with their friends?
Coming from both EQ and Daoc, where I played on RP servers I just hope that Virtue stays the course. I saw on both servers I played on the steady decline of the Roleplaying. As more and more people begain to play the games on those servers, the roleplaying numbers sadly became out numbered by those who didn't. I am by no means the RP police, but having a RP server that I know I can go to and not always here the dood speek, or hear about the real life for a little bit, is all part of the mystic of a game of this nature.
Anyway enjoy all
I will be joining you all in a few days
i always appreciate when someone heals me...
when someone tries to steal my kill i don´t really care as long as the mobs are not grey to the player...maybe i start a rp discussion but i don´t play that kind of char. when they are far above my lvl and the mob must be grey for them i see it as griefplay and when it happens more then once with the same player i think of it as intended by him/her and petition it to a gm...i think thats the way i would handle it

Question regarding etiquette (I figure RPers are probably the best to ask). I know a lot of folks get angry about the whole Kill-Stealing business, so I always ask if someone needs help before jumping in... on offense. My character is strongly bound to helping people however, and I often heal a player that looks like they are having difficulty if I happen upon them. Is that considered bad etiquette as well?
[/ QUOTE ]
From my point of view, healing someone else is not a breach of etiquette at all unless you are deliberately trying to annoy them. Someone who heals a stranger they come across on the street gains no XP and does not in any way interfere with gameplay (unless they are trying to spam the screen with various flashy graphics, but they'd have to be totally insane to spend $20 a month for a game to do that instead of just sitting in a room flicking the light-switch on and off).
Virtue, eh? I'll try and get together a good character for that. Anyone I should watch out for?
[ QUOTE ]
See I totally bogle at the whole "kill steal" thing... I mean they've already set up the system to deliver XP and drops according to Damage dealt. If I run up and do the Coupe De Grace on a Red (High danger to me) My damage will be peanuts compared to what brought the baddy down. So I'll get maybe 1 or 2 xp, they'll take the lions share and the odds of me getting the drop will be less that 2%. The only thing that get's hurt is maybe someone's pride, and what better introduction to start some great RP'ing! I've had people rush in to try and "get a piece" if they're over their heads, I'll step back and laugh as I let them take the agro (focus of the attacks)
[/ QUOTE ]
All too often this has not been the case for me. I have never had somebody come in and kill steal an almost dead MOB. In every instance I've had somebody one shot (usually somebody a level or two higher than me) something that hasn't hit half health yet.
Either I get a blaster type who lets of their most deadly attack OR I have a meleer who runs in and smacks the MOB dead in one shot while I was waiting for a DoT or for my power to recharge (this happened all the time with my controller).
Heck, just yesterday I pulled a group of 3 with an AoE, just to have somebody three levels higher than me run up and kill two of them before I could react.
I am currently on the Virtue server and have started an all mutant supergroup called Mutant Academy. If anyone is interested feel free to message me or Phuse and will take your application into account. We currently have a guildportal.com site up but i have been busy playing and have not updated it. We are a friendly, roleplaying (not rpg nazis though) and goal oriented team. We like to utilize the sidekick feature and that goes along well with our "teaching school" theme.
Come give us a try!
I agree, I have yet to meet many RPers on the Virtue server, despite it being claimed as one. Where are all these RPers?? I have only see a sparse few! I keep running into players who are not RPers and are perplexed, or sometimes, downright rude about a RPer. What are they on this server for if they knew it was mostly RPing. No reason for a non-RPer to attack someone who is RPing just because they don't understand it or condone it, even when they know it is a RP server. Sigh.... would love to RP, all I see is grind grind grind.
Uh, maybe they dont visit the forums and dont know Virtue was the annointed RP server?
Still no reason to be rude, but there's also no reason to assume that all players read the boards and know what goes in them. I also imagine that many people are trying to grind their way back up to where they were prior to Beta.
No, I am talking about the ones that knew, and still came to Virtue to grief. Happens, some people only find real pleasure in the displeasure of others. As to grinding to get to Beta levels, well, I see mostly 10+ characters still grinding away, ah well. I suppose when they said unofficial RP server, the emphasis was on "unofficial". Just isn't much RPing happening IMHO. I still hold out hope tho, that alot of them were not Preorders and are awaiting the launch.
*fingers crossed*
Don't lose hope about the amount RPing you see on Virtue. I know it is easy to forget, but it has only been live for about 60 hours. I think any real sense of community won't emerge for a couple of weeks at the very least. Just go out there and have fun. And if anyone starts griefing you, you could always use /ignore.
See you in Paragon City!

Join a roleplaying encouraged supergroup? Don't associate with the rude players who dont like rpgers (havenet seen one for the last 2 days)?
I like to monitor how someone is doing. If they get too low I heal. If they have too many foes I zap one to slow them down. I never try KS. And if I accidently do I am more then happy to RP with the person and explain my position. I am on Virtue as "Crossroads". Say hi if you wish. I love the accidental meeting ... you see someone and you look at each other. Then you start talking and before you know it .... you are fighting crime if even just a couple of thugs.
Someone should have a "arms in the city night". Everyone meets in one place, talks, teams up, fights crime, see who you like and who you don't.
I play The Fro Man on Virtue yesterday. I didn't see any RPing. I was really disappointed. I was looking for a fun time, but everyone was just leveling in GC. Is there somewhere that people are RPing on Virtue? I have created some macro texts in character with color coded for my character. I would like to see color coded texts as being in character. That would be cool.
Couple of questions, if you guys don't mind. I started to get into the thread rping late in the game for the forums. I did meet some interesting people there that I would like to continue to have contact with, but I've started a character on another server, and am curious how many people know that Virtue is the "RPing" server.
Also, is it possible that any of the game managers would post or label a server as such. Like is done in DAoC. That way new people with like minded interests would know where to go.
I think this game would be a ton of fun to roleplay in, and I hope to see a strong community. However, so far I have seen the same power-leveling people I've seen on every other MMoRPG. I know they're going to be there, but are they the majority?

Actually. I'm in it all for myself. If I see a hero battling away at a villain and let's say I need that type of villain to complete my mission... tough luck, my friend! The Sly Fox waits for no man! Of course, if it's a lady... well...
Oh... and also if it's Yankee Daring's kill...
...Hey, I'm sly, but I'm not STUPID!
hey everyone, just thought id mention, I am a vetern rp like most others on this thread, however I had NO idea that anyone was rping CoH yet or at least not majorly, and I also didn't know it was on Virtue, hehe which I just happend to pick anyway. So either way, hope to see everyone on there, I will now likely be strickly RP as I will hit 10 in about an hour of playing and am not worried about pl from then on, Msg me or ingame email me IC..

Well there's me, and of course, Yankee Daring
But I'm not saying he's a kill stealer... oh no! I'm just telling you who to "watch out for" like you asked...
He's more like... what's that joke? Where does a 300lb Gorilla sleep? Anywhere he wants... yeah... that's about right...
"Uh, maybe they dont visit the forums and dont know Virtue was the annointed RP server? "
Guys, not trying to be rude, and I am also a beta tester, but no matter what your effort to make virtue the RP server, it will only be recognized as such by the RP community. Frankly, it's a minority community. People will join Virtue and have no clue, nor should they care, it's not only uofficial, it's unenforceable. The beta community didn't annoint anything, a collection of beta's and pre-orderers decided a destination to advertize where they were going and would like more RPers to join, and less l33t idiots.
Now I came here to avoid to griefers and morons who also usually avoid rpers. But don't be just as bad as they are, don't get snooty at those who don't rp as much or to the degree you do. I'm not flaming anyone, just pointing out that making a ton of threads announcing that all the rpers want to go to virtue doesn't = you own the server and make the rules. Statements like the one quoted atop my post irk me, more so I bet than non-rpers irk you.
Don't like those who ruin your immersion, simple, don't play with them. I play 99% with my group of guildies that I've played with for quite some time. We mainly keep to ourselves, play pretty fairminded, interact politely to others, but we aren't fanatical rpers. We have every right to play on virtue as the l33t idiots who I hope stay away.
Now I respect the rpers for thier effort to immerse, but please don't impose your viewpoints on others. You don't own Virtue, you don't call the shots there, no one here owns stock in ncsoft or cryptic. Again, I'm not trying to be rude, and written comments w/o inflection can easily be missinterpreted. I hope you take my comments to heart. You may disagree, but my purpose is to give you another perspective. I hope you ALL enjoy your RPing, and I will be happy not to intrude. However, you are merely a portion of a larger server community, and that community does what it please, and no matter how much you post that Virtue or Guardian or whatever server is this or that, it will only have a small overall impact on who goes there, and how the server actually functions. I'm sure the rper community will stick tight together and maximize the enjoyment by doing so.
Things like KSing, while you make rationalizations to justify, is simply a general poor form and bad tactic. You can make excuses, but there are plenty of mobs out there and you don't need to assist people who don't want it. If they do, you'll know the difference, they'll either say so, or you can tell they are getting beat to a pulp and won't mind when it's clear they need help. If you need to RP this, consider that each hero has an ego and wants to do right and seek justice on their own terms, and gain their own fame doing so, or whatever you wish to motivate you to be a hero. Interfering is stealing thier rep, their thunder, thier effort to make a name. If that helps, good, if not, realize that the real life world, it's just something that po's 99% of all mmorpg'ers. Go find your own enemies and kick their butts on your own. Frankly, there are also practical reasons, when you get 'kill 10 XX' missions, it's not the person who does the most damage who gets the kill credit, it's often whomever tags it last. And one shot can be enough to also get the lions share of the xp too.
Not everyone is trying to zoom in levels, but more often than not people are enjoying the challenge and THEY lose immersion when someone pops over and finishes off their enemy that they've worked hard at finishing. OR you are trying to take on a small group, and testing your capabilities. Whatever, show good form and move on. Otherwise, I sure hope that when you are all 20, 30+ you'll still kill each and every single GREY mob you run past, cause if you don't they clearly you aren't the RPers you claim. Now I KNOW that most people don't do this, it isn't game-practical, but if you are going to go the Nth degree for RPing, I think you get my point.
Flame me if you think you need to, /salute if you took my comments constructively. In the end, we all are playing on the same servers and the most important thing is that we all have as much fun as we can, with as much effort to not intrude on others as possible. It's the reason my group came her. NOT to grief, not to rp fanatically, not to get snooty comments from those who do, but rather to avoid what intense rpers and moderates alike try to avoid - the lousy players who live to see others log off miserable. My group is NOT of that ilk, and by the same token I think the various groups of different opinions should keep in mind that there are various groups joining Virtue, and they won't all be of the same mind as you. Infact, they more than likely will overwhelmingly outnumber you in a few weeks time, if not less.
Enjoy!!!! In whatever way makes you most happy.
Thank fuggin god it's a miority community. Otherwise Virtue would be swamped. And it has lag and disconnection issues as it is...
lol i love your group quote
Mc1 hit the nail on the head. Though the old RP community has annointed Virtue we still do not own the server. We simply went there so it woul dbe easier for us all to find each other. Most of the old RP community has been gaming together on the CoH boards for years. It woul dhave been a shame for us to lose those relationships and history by scattering to the four winds at launch. In the end we are a minority and need to stick together.
If you've joined Virtue looking for RPers it's not as easy to find them here as in other games. because of the limits to the chat syustem you'll probably not going to be able to hear them RPing. They're RPing in thier team chat most likely where you can't hear/see it.
For instance if you run into any of the League Of Titans you probably won't know they're RPing right away. As thier characters are going to be talkign about the same things we as players would have been talking about.
Because of the flood of people trying to log into Virtue, and the load that created on day one (preorder) I just created on Freedom (Had 3 characters assembled played with for a bit and Vitue was still can not connect to Database). And feel you will find Rpers where ever you go, I do admit later I have create a few characters on virtue to just RP but did find little to do. So back to Freedom, and hey it is hard to RP in character who is a mute (Runihura), so those that know me know I'm OOC when I speak in team talk, or I let them know.
I feel RPers will be everywhere, but until they allow use coffee shops and nightclubs to inhabit, the rping may lack some social aspects
I have a mute character too, although for entirely different reasons
While on the thought of the unofficial RP server (hey Tenebre!), it occurred to me that we don't really have a comprehensive listing of the various RP super groups on the server. Is there a possibility in the future of some kind of listing, so we solo heroes can check out the groups to see who to go for?

Yeah, The best way to deal with KSing on an RP server is to figure out an RP solution. For example, my character is the type that will help people if she feels they need it. So if I really think that someone needs my help I'll jump in and help them out, even if they didn't ask. This is the same reason why if I hear some citizen ask for help, my character will always help them, even if they're gray con minions that offer no xp or Purple bosses that will kill me if I stay too long. On the other hand, she's not going to jump in and help if she doesn't think there's a reason to. So if I think you can handle the guys you're fighting, I won't get involved, unless, of course, you scream for help.
Of course, people are sensitive about the KSing issue so if I'm helping somebody out, I'll try to give him the last hit so he can get the credit for it. But RP wise, I don't worry about it. So if I happen to get the last hit in and the guy I was helping starts yelling at me for KSing, my character will just shrug and think to herself "what an idiot" and just walk away. Then I'll send a tell (which are pretty much always considered OOC) explaining to him that I was just RPing my character.
P.S. and for the RP newbs;
ooc - out of character
ic - in character
Caios - Modern. Vampire. Cowgirl, not Catgirl.
Karnage - Monster. Psychopath. Fun at Parties.
FyreShadow - Innocent. Naive. God-like Powerful.
Queen Armitage - Caring. Exiled. and out of Options.
