I'll be honest--I'm sitting on my haunches now, waiting to see who all TonyV hits with that press release they've been drafting. I may then have a few suggestions for sites that don't get caught in the first pass. Turning the press release into an iReport, though, would be a good first step in my book.

Quote:Even if they're pointing and laughing, they're still pointing. This is a case where very little would be "bad" publicity; if we got a three-minute human interest story from CNN's odd-story reporter, do you think the people we want to make an impression on would be saying "Look at those losers she poked fun at?" Of course not. They'd be saying "Those fans got their story airtime on CNN. Maybe we should look at picking them up..."I couldn't afford that, and even if I could I would not do it. It's a wank. You'd just look like the spandex version of furries and have more people making fun of you than anything.
Now, the public at large might think we're weird forever after, but we were (largely) comics and video game nerds beforehand. They thought that already. And now that I think about it, we are just one good PR stunt away from getting the aforementioned reporter--whose name escapse me--to produce a story about us. -
Quote:Please let us know what sites are getting press releases.Hey all, added several more articles in the OP that have been pointed out to me. Great job, and keep an eye out. We've had our coordinators scanning all of these forums and the Internet at large to collect media organizations, and tomorrow we plan on firing off our first official press release. I've made contact with several good media folks, and we're hoping that within a few days, this will be plastered over most gaming, comic, and tech news sites, and after that, possibly even hitting some mainstream news outlets, too.
Honestly, if this catches fire, it could potentially become embarrassing for NCSoft in North America...which is bad for NCSoft's shareholders and changes the business logic slightly. -
Massively is sympathetic. Let's see if we can get them to tell our story.

10000!
Edited to add: 10K subs per month, assuming each signer is willing to pony up the scratch, should be enough to make a publisher at least think about the business prospects. -

Quote:I don't get my hopes up often--I find that optimism (or pessimism) keeps me from seeing the world as it really is and preparing accordingly. But when you say it, I almost believe it.Therefore, I honestly believe that a few years from now, we'll all be hanging out in Atlas Park reminiscing about that time that NCsoft scared the hell out of us, and how much better the game is now in its Third Era of ownership.
Anyway, the game had its flaws--what doesn't?--but they weren't fatal flaws, singularly or in aggregate. What "went wrong" was that nothing lasts forever. -

I had a milkshake yesterday. It was a darn good one, too.
But I'm in training to be both a member of the healthcare team and a public health advocate. I understand--as well as anyone possibly can, I hope. On the other hand, I've been forcing myself to exercise and study even though I don't want to because it's my way of proving to myself and the world that I can overcome this.
Since 1948, the World Health Organization has defined "health" as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Socially and mentally, we're not doing well. If taking solace in otherwise unhealthy things helps, I won't tell you not to. I will, however, respectfully advocate moderation. -
Quote:In fact, NPR's "Monkey See" blog might be interested in just telling our story as it plays out. The human-interest angle would be thought-provoking--especially since the video game reviewers there seem to be interested in advancing the idea of "games as art," focusing on games like Spec Ops: The Line and Persona 4 Arena. When the time comes, go BEYOND gaming news sites. NPRs Marketplace might be interested as well as NYTimes, Washington Post or Wall St. Journal.
I sent a message to "Monkey See" inviting them to review our past--highlighting Real World Hero as an example of our community's outreach--and come talk to us in the present. -
That actually plays to our advantage. That means one more day to pad Gabe Newell's inbox and our petition signature total. It makes us look even more dramatic.

On points 1, 2, and 4, it's still ahead of its time. So many things about CoH were designed to be user-friendly that my mind boggles when I think that it could be done any other way.

...Yes, I'm even going to miss the blue caves...

Quote:Extra Credits will be all over this story like white on rice...if we, the citizens of Paragon City and the Etoile Islands, actually pull off that miracle. It would validate one of their recurring messages: games are more than games. Games change lives. I know this one has changed mine. There's VG247, and Extra Credits might be an idea to to contact, at the very least it'd make a good basis for an episode for them.

Those are your best bets. I know many people here don't know me, but...in case someone comes along later and can't find me, there it is. -
Oh, why not? Couldn't hurt, right? Here's what I'm sending to pc.ign.com:
Quote:To whom it may concern,
If pc.ign.com is interested in doing a story on how video games can be a positive force in people's lives, I wholeheartedly invite any of their journalists to sit down with regular players of the soon-to-be-shuttered City of Heroes. The people behind the denizens of Paragon City and the Rogue Isles aren't taking the pending server shutdowns lightly: fansite Titan Network is reaching out to third parties, frantically trying to broker any sort of deal that will keep the game alive. The community is offering ideas and potentially crowdfunding.
And why shouldn't they? Among MMO communities, City of Heroes has enjoyed a good reputation. Many, many lifelong friendships and marriages have begun in CoH--as with any long-running MMO--but the game's Heroes and Villains have also gotten behind very real worthwhile causes, such as Real World Hero ( http://realworldhero.com/ ). The game remains, to the best of my knowlege, one of the only MMOs to adopt LGBT rights as a front for advocacy on a larger scale, with many player-run events that promoted the frank discussion of LGBT issues in a nonthreatening, virtual setting.
I think gaming journalism could use a different sort of story, a story about the people in this age of Twitter and Facebook. A real-time telling of the ultimate underdog tale. It's a long, long, shot, but heroes take the long odds and win.
Can they do it in the real world? And don't you think your readers would be interested in seeing the outcome?
See you in Paragon,
@Vulpy

I haven't played redside SSA1, but Westin Phipps is evil in a downright petty way.

This thread is getting pretty charged. I'd like to respectfully advocate that we all try to focus on supporting one another. We're all hurting here, and we all need one another, now more than ever. Please.
I would be sincerely grateful. -
I wonder if the Titan Network has started soliciting video game news sites yet? If we could get one of them to do a "human interest"-type piece on the fandom and especially the grassroots efforts to keep the game alive in some form, it could really be a windfall for the cause: it would legitimize our efforts to outsiders, and possibly introduce more parties to NCSoft, CoH, and the thought of purchasing the IP and/or code.
-
We should bounce that off of the folks in the Titan Network threads. They look like the best clearinghouse for coordination at this point; if anyone else is trying to contact media sites, they'd be the ones.

Quote:I believe the OP's intent was to try to convince Blizzard to put in a bid on the CoH IP and code, not to advocate a boycott of NCSoft.I really don't think the focus should be one trying to tell people to boycott NCSoft... It'll merely make you sound bitter (referring to the thread created by Moonfyire101, which is the only thread I see at all related to this topic).
Edit: I see the title of the thread on the Blizzard forums now, and I get what you're getting at, too. -
