with tip missions, they attack heroes too. luckily rian and sr5 ar defense based, that resonance grenade is not nice for res based characters.

Quote:more accurately, the joker survives and keeps killing because the fans love him, so they can have increasingly strained rationalizations for why he escapes, but ultimately you can only impart so much logic to the situation, joker lives and goes free because hes cooler than killer croc, the riddler and the penguin. But again, the batman is a detective, he is not the entirety of the Gotham criminal justice system, and really so long as the people of gotham value their self-determination, that is how it is, if they decide to go the "kingdom come" route and abdicate responsibility to a "hero" as the entirety of their justice system, its when they admit they are unfit to govern themselves, so maybe the plot armor excuse is a bit more polite to the continuing fiction.I don't know if it does. Anyone know that status of Gotham City's legal system, especially regarding the death penalty?
Regardless, he keeps getting out before anyone kills him, whether it's the state or a fellow inmate.
I do recall that in both "hush" and "killing joke", commissioner gordon specifically requested that bats does it by the book, maybe he realizes the implications of abdication of civil responsibility to a un-elected official. -
Quote:not calling you on this, but since i have seen wow's chinese numbers being quoted as in 5 mill plus, could you link anything on that? I'd like for that to be true, but i'd just like some support on that please. thanks for your time. For those that asked-

ok, so chase, lisar and gg all thought the same as me. quite a cross section. as for me..well, i have all the packs outside of the party pack, and on principle i would not take that one for free.(UPDATE)of the list, i have every one of those. the jetpacks are neat, but with ninja run, im good. so its good that it will get people up to speed, my little brother will be coming on soon, might get him set up now for a more economical cost.

Quote:well, it isnt new, but we still like hearing it, so point it out all you wantI saw reds last night on Freedumb and Virtue [not that I had trouble connecting to Virtue, most of the other had 2 dots which wasn't something I ever saw before baring major events [Pardon me if this isn't new I been away for 3 months.]
the good neews seems to be that so far the population gains from gr have not died off after the free month. now, i suspect an event will happen soon that will hurt most mmo's population, at least for a bit. but a shoring up of resources and the beginning of the "endgame" will hopefully give some protection.

never would have added pvp, if you aren't going to commit to it, implementing it halfheartedly does nothing. it wasted everyone's time, the game would be better without it.
Would have prioritized more art assets, similar to the pvp comment, stick with your strong competitive points. maps, costumes, weapons, animations, that is coh's strong point, not attracting gamers who already are invested in other games that integrated what they do well from the beginning. EVERY issue should have a significant number of costume options. -
he has never come out and said it, but he seems to know more about the industry than a standard gamer, i always suspected he worked in the industry. lemur as well.

i was annoyed? care to quote that?
only thing i'm annoyed with is that marcian didnt go along and set me up for the "with friends like your teammates, who needs enemas" joke. i'm crushed about that. -
just finished paprika, i am in love. outside of one scene that i wish had been toned down a bit(so that i coudl have shown it to my more anime averse friends as a conversion piece) the soundtrack is amazing, the visuals are a kaleidoscopically beautiful counterpoint to the doldrums we were just arguing about in the "realism" thread. and the story is suitable wonky. easily sits aside serial experiments lain, boogiepop phantom and the great rapid fire hallucinogenic anime mind-@#$%s . satoshi kon will be missed.

then i wish to give adam smith's invisible hand a high five, send them to greener pastures.

Quote:that would be true, but with ironik, his rules are this so any small use of magic (and presumably technology that enhances his crime fighting or any form of scientific enhancement) changes his origin and is some kind of major crime against his character. taken to its logical conclusion it is absurd, but honestly, i dont feel like fighting it with ironik, i appreciate that he likes having freedom in the game, and with my costume obsession, i can relate, but where i just think he is applying unreasonable expectations is in him complaining about any conflicting text with his back-stories. feel free to disregard canon, i have in the past myself, but dont expect canon to accommodate all the whacked out origins we can possibly come up with. we were never promised that, and we sure as heck aint going to get it.That's the equivalent of calling every character that went through Dean McArthur's arc with the Ajax fight (where you had to use technology to weaken him enough to defeat him) Science or Technology just because they went through that arc.

who the hell buys from them? our population cant be driving them here, and we are minuscule in the asian territories where rmt is more readily accepted. so who is creating a market for them to be annoying in the market?
-
ha but my heroes dislike pie, that text would ruin my play experience, stifle my creativity, delete all the video games off my hard drive and sign me up for bonzi buddy.

eh, my take is a bit less generous, cynicism is easy because you never have to make an effort, just mope and moan. finding things in life worth living for, finding hope, that is the tough stuff, you actually have to make an effort, be disappointed at times, show guts, it is so darn hard, and crawling into a ball and moaning about the world is so very easy. used to do that when i was a teenager, in retrospect it was really pathetic, but you grow up and realize you find happiness, it just doesn't fall on you, so you get off your butt and make an effort. cynics hate people who found happiness, hope, and purpose though, because it just reminds them how pathetic they are.

Quote:nor is it as grim as it is portrayed in some of the fairly major theatrical, tv movie and even video game releases. nobody is calling for Pollyanna, but reality is a combination of both happiness and sadness, to play up grimness certainly seems to align with attmepts to target angsty, disaffected(and financially desirable, as advertisers go) young males. dude, i love jay o'barr's crow, but that was because it was a well written and unflinchingly well staged dive into darker subjects, most angsty cynical works dont manage that level of artistry and, much like genuine positive sentimentality, when it fails, it fails badly.Clearly (if there is one) God considers himself "gritty and shocking" because there are quite a few people in the world with dead parents, crippled sons, failed marriages and canines with cancer. Maybe you live in a nice cushy existence, but that doesn't mean everyone else does. But that's beside the point, really.
You're okay with an endless supply of super characters that emerge from explosions without a scratch or scratches that don't have any effect beyond being makeup, I'm not. After a while, a character that can't be injured gets boring because no matter the interesting situation he's found himself in, he'll always escape/beat the bad guy/get the girl and live happily ever after.
Life isn't like that. You never live "happily ever after." -
-
i suppose my complaint is less realism as cynicism and nihilism, it sells to males 18-29 so it pays the bills, but it is trite. reality has good and bad both, nihilism and cynicism just focus on grimness for the sake of grimness, it is no less unrealistic than sappy sentimentality.

i suspect i really do not want into any argument that intersects the venn diagram of star wars fans and origin rp fanatics

That's EXACTLY the canon definition of magic, according to War Witch-NPC. If you were to postulate Jackie Chan not having his amazing physical gifts until the magical Well of Furies unleashed its mojo on the world, then you aren't talking about a Natural Scrapper but rather a Magical one, plain and simple. If Tony Stark couldn't come up with Iron Man until after being touched by the Well's "inspiration," then you're no longer talking a Tech hero but rather a Magic one. There's simply no getting around the fact that if the source of all inspiration is Magic, then everything it touches automatically becomes of Magic origin, too.
darth maul used a martial arts style based on manipulating a underlying force in conjunction with physical skills. he did so no through ritual, alchemy or contact with higher planar entities , but instead through mental and physical training. had he not had access to that underlying force, his discipline and training would still have allowed him to act as something comparable to a scrapper, but as he gained mastery of the force as well as his own physical capacities, he became to normal people like what an incarnate is seemingly to a normal superhero, simply above their capacity. his origin of power is still discipline and training, so he still is "natural" through our definitions, even if his capacities are well above what someone natural could do.
similarly, in marvel zombies, reed richard's zombie used his super science to simulate the silver surfer's power cosmic and injure galacticus. he was not a cosmic entity, but through technology he still wielded a force beyond what his technology had previously been capable of. in theory if , as in your example, iron man had gained access to the underlying source of the power cosmic by some element of his power armor, then it still would be the technology that gives him his power, not his own command of the power cosmic.
As for war witch's comments on the origin of power arc..honestly i have only done that as a villain, but from how he and others discussed powers, it really seemed more their interpretations of where the power came from, rather than the hard truth. so i viewed that particular arc as a nice in character bit of how those who wield the powers viewed them, but canon contradicts elements of the mutant thing already with the priest who was a mutant but lived well before the atomic bomb, so i saw it more as an exposition of npc motivations (the vil magic guy is a power mad Nietzscheian, marshall brass has a chip on his shoulder) as a hard and unchangeable bit of canon .Quote:The game used to be wide open, but they got infected with the "directed gameplay" meme at some point when designing CoV and it's been hanging around ever since. Just add the mechanics and let us decide how to roleplay them. Easy-peasy. Even better for the Devs because then they don't have to bend over backwards coming up with utter nonsense like Powerset Proliferation explanations. Frees up all kinds of time for them to write story arcs.
Have you ever rolled a robot character -- or, heck, just a BALD one -- and gone into a mission where the pop-up text reads, "You slick back your hair and get ready to fight." It simply doesn't fit your character at all. Origin of Power, Powerset Proliferation and Incarnates are exactly like that pop-up, writ large and affecting every single character in the game. And there isn't even a reason to do it. -
Quote:not at all, the smarts give you the capacity to manipulate the metaphysical power that underlies powers that eclipse even superhuman powers. if you are using your smarts to devise some electrical ultratech device, your power is not the electricity or whatever tech drives the device, but rather your capacity to know how to create and apply that device.Yeah, but you basically take the WORST aspect of Origin of Powers and expand on it, making it that much worse. The very idea that "smarts" is somehow the physical representation of some kind of metaphysical power is... Insulting, to be perfectly honest. It insinuates that a smart character is not, in fact, smart, but is actually receiving some kind of divine knowledge. I prefer to leave skill and smarts as being a character's own achievements, rather than some kind of meta-power.
I mean,we all have our own justifications for how our characters do as they do, but i would really raise an eyebrow at anyone who tried to pass off a character who fought the kronos titan as a totally unpowered human and won and wanted to claim any sort of plausibility to it. on any film it would be derided as ludicrous, even with anime sensibilities it would be glossed over by some mcguffin energy or something. It just seems that you(and ironik) can overlook some gaping implausibilities and not others in a largely arbitrary fashion, but you both still want those stretches accommodated, and that really isnt the story writers job. i deal with having several characters directly related to catholic angelic cosmology, knowing full well that we have all kinds of weird gods and entities that wouldn't fit, but knowing that i initiated the step out of canon, i certainly dont complain that the devs invalidated my concepts, i just take a socket wench to it as best i can and set things to my own preferences, and gloss over what i cant reconcile. -
well, the way i view it is more in line with the well being a representation of a mataphysical underlying power(similar to chi, the force, the "truth" from full metal alchemist or whatever), your incarnate power is simply your character getting a clearer connection to that power that enhances your already powerful character and becoming a kind of a direct conduit of that metaphysical power. whether you encounter that power through ritual, technology, academic knowledge, intense training or biological variation is immaterial, you are simply being brought more strongly in line with the underlying primal creative force, and that makes you super powerful and a reality altering way. This isnt inherently magical unless you apply a very rigid and canon inappropriate definition of magic.
