Well, my little 8 ball says, the drain has been from a lack of new story and mission content, which i expect(and freaking well hope) GR will rectify. Beyond that, this game has had some qol improvements this year that assured my staying, animation customization was bigger than anything any other mmo offered me. But honestly, Things will be as they are and there isnt much that pouting or stomping our feet can do to change things. If you see a new player, be nice to them. and if they have a question, help them if you have the capacity. maybe even global friend them, so you can be the go-to guy/gal. that is the only power we the players actually have, but its not as small as it may seem, loyalty doesnt spring from trees, its is cultivated through good works(gyah, too many customer service training seminars...but ti is also true, despite being sappy). There is a reason coh has the rep it does for being friendly and inviting, MAINTAIN IT!
as for marketing, im guessing that they aren't marketing now because there isnt much new to market right now, but theya re going to market heavily on gamer specific sites, like kotaku, penny arcade, /gu and the like when GR gets it's hype train chugging. much like they did when the MA box hit, there were a lot of ads then. -
Quote:heh, after the power customization announcements, i did promise/threaten to kiss both of them on the face, and babs may be doubling up if the tail/belt thing works out*smirks*
Yeah... poor Posi has me. A fate worse than death, depending on who you ask.

happy...inarticulate...but happy... if he can make robes work with tails i will be beside myself. yes, my main character is a freaking dragon, this is big...

Eh, at this point i'd rather they not tie too much game affecting stuff into the vet rewards, given that the rewards are now at the 6 year mark. that said, the insp thing will be nice in about 4 months for me.

it happens a lot between major news releases. soon the devs will drop some info(supposedly this week) and then everyone will over analyze that to pieces like a chicken at an alice cooper concert. It is kind of the way things are on a fourm dedicated to a single game.

Eh on a technical level, i disagree. they set the limit, as i understand, because multiple animated costume bits tax systems, particularly lower end ones pretty badly. my experience with champions suggests that there is truth to this, though that may be a comparison too distant to make. but while i had a outfit that looked very good on my plant tom using the bolero and wings, i understnad that it can be inconsiderate to knowingly take adantage of a mistake that could compromise the enjoyment of a teammate for my own vanity. So while id prefer it didnt exist and we could have animated tails and hair with a trenchcoat and wings, It does make sense.

well af, if gr were only what we saw at herocon, i'd be inclined to agree, 2 powersets, a side switching feature, a graphics feature that may not affect a number of us(though leaving it optional was a good thing to do, kicking the low end systems off forceably would be nasty) feature and a zone that s i seemingly a mix of 1984 and minority report only goes so far. but lets wait till we know more than the first murmurings of content. I would be surprised if the large staffing up and relative lack of storyline content or new art for over a year only lead up to that. that would actually get me dooming if that was all. I suspect a lot of older players have burned out a bit on the current stuff and are waiting in the wings for gr, and looking at the spike villains gave coh, even with a poorly received feature like ED which hopefully GR will lack, lets say im reasonably optimistic that it will draw back some people for at least the short term, from then on the ball is in the devs court to keep them.

think he means subscriber numbers.

it has strongly been hinted, i believe at herocon, that mutation will be monstrous bits related. no idea of content though.

no, that snark post was for frozen, i was still trying to be objective with reikaru. and i have said about 3 times that i know that its not the whole community, its just that for such a small community, it does seem to have a higher percentage, and it is not just coh players. Heck, lets take it to bartle's archetypes. the constructive pvper like riek probably is is closer to the achiever type, they play, they improve, they dont intentionally destroy people's fun, and often they try to make sure new players feel welcome, i am not referring to them, but a surprisingly large proportion of the communtiy is "killers" people who'se fun is generated from ruining other people's play time, not competing. they dont care if they win or lose, hell, they often are bad pvpers, but since killing them doesn't shut them up, even if you get a group together and beat them senseless, they still win because they forced you to interrupt your fun play to go deal with them. they continue ruining the image of pvpers for everyone. and lets face it, after issue 13, emotions did run high and a lot of people who may have been constructive players lashed out a lot and ticked off people who previously had defended pvpers from the more aggressive anti guys. I count myself as one of the changers, things got too heated, too personal and lost civility,a nd the escalator was usually a pvper.
as for the badgers, that is their fault, but there is problems there too, if a badger asks a pvper to quit fighting them and the pvper responds civilly that the rules of the pvp zone are that they are a target, that would be subjective, but if the pvper berates the player with a string of profanities, as is usually reported in these situations, well then that is less subjective. -
Quote:nah, i was being a jerk there, it couldn't be helped really.
Well, see you ***** about these forum trolling pvpers in the same post as you write that. The difference is some of their stuff is funny in a juvenile antics sort of way. Try getting some objectivity on your own attitude. Mine is one of general fatigue from dealing with both types of people. -
that must be it, of the small pvp community there are only 2 or 3 jerks, but they were EVERYWHERE and despite the brave attempts of the community leaders to rein them in, they were too busy building houses for the homeless and curing cancer to rein them in, so those 2 or 3 bad attitude guys went on to irritate a good 40% of the general community. it couldnt be that there is a larger gorup than that who likes being sadistic jerks, that clearly never has been brought up here or in any other game with pvp, its just those 2 or 3 guys, thanks for the clarification, all those separate forum names that used the general forums as a toilet post issue 13 till the moderators purged so many threads, they must have been alt accounts of those guys. and the current pvpers with the blatantly insulting sigs, they are just using them to warn the other upstanding members how not to be. kudos good sir, your efforts are appreciated.

Quote:because there are so many. one thing that really seems to escape you as you continue to try to make this point is that there is a reason why such a large number of people have negative opinions of the pvp community. A jerk can bother a few people, but do you really think that such a large portion of the community would have these feelings if they hadn't seen a lot of this kind of behavior by members of the pvp community. especially after the behavior after issue 13. johnny is a joke, everyone knows that and treats him accordingly. people like serps and -ilr , as well as other well known jerks i can't mention because they still play were encouraged by members of the pvp community. when johnny posted we mocked him and refuted him, when serps posted persoanl attacks on other players and the developers, you and other pvpers quoted him and agreed with him, so maybe we are holding people responsible for their actions. While the negative experiences are sure to stand out, I just don't see why anyone could have a hard time holding individuals accountable for their actions rather than try to blame an entire community for the acts of the few. More so because it doesn't seem to happen in other sub-communities. If one were to hold the entire PvE community accountable for the actions of posters like Ashen_T/Doc_Flowers (anyone remember that guy?), there'd be no one else playing this game. Same with the Tanker community and posters like Johnny_Butane. If people can recognize that one jackass does not represent the whole there, why think it's that way for PvP?
As i said earlier, its isnt everyone, but it is a subsection that seems to naturally develop in pvp communities, and not just here. My best guess is that while some people want real competition with variable strategies and even take the effort to organize community building events(the better end of the pvp community), some people really like that they can screw up someone's fun. -
Ok, do opposing viewpoints really appear this distorted in your mind, or are you being like this on purpose? you and coldmed were calling the game a "ghost town" as in, completely empty, people were countering that no, the game still is viable, how was that difficult for you to understand? Nobody was claiming the idiotic strawman that you claim that they were, we were claiming that the game is still sustainable, outside of silly strawman arguments, do you have a valid counter-point, or are you just doing this to see yourself post?

Quote:hmm, i don't think pvp will ever be to my liking, but i would like to see them at least return it to where it was so the few that did like it could play it. i'd even get behind a system that matched up teams in the zones for something like the wow battlegrounds(as i understand them, never pvp'd in wow). but beyond that, im not sure that too many things they try would actually make pvpers happy, so run the clock back to issue 12 and cut your losses at this point. This brings up an interesting, related question:
Would you (the collective you) want the devs here to take the time and resources to change PvP IF they could make it more to your personal liking?
And a corollary...
If you want Base Raiding/the Cathedral of Pain, what should be different this time around? -

if i stand in a gamestop and mention okami or beyond good and evil, same deal(and i do, a lot), you arent going to get everyone no matter what even if the game is amazing. its frustrating that crap games get popular, but life is not nor will it ever be fair. really outside of wow or maybe, MAYBE aion, are people particularly informed about mmos? can i get a granado espada chat started up? im betting right now i could get the same reaction on chamions, conan or warhammer, to joe sixpack, its pretty much wow or nothing, maybe modern warfare 2 if they misunderstand what a mmo is.

Quote:Heh, i have heard of "gamers" who never heard of beyond good and evil, okami or psychonauts. just because someone plays games doesnt mean they are informed gamers or people who like good games. That said, they never heard of it? it advertised exrensively in egm and pc gamer during launch and during cov's launch, won awards in pc gamer, was featured positively in several mmo episodes of x-play, had a strong advertising presence earlier this year on kotaku(a very popular gaming blog), penny arcade, and the more mmo-centric /gu comics. also almost every issue has been featured on kotaku since i started going there regularly last year. so while i'd love to see more press for coh, and i suspect we will during gr, if they never heard of the game, then they might not be particularly easy to reach with conventional advertising methods.Something I think marketing is full of phailure with is this... If people dont here anything about Going Rogue... as people have not heard anything... people wont buy it.
I am still telling GAMERS about City of Heroes, they have NEVER HEARD OF IT...
NEVER HEARD OF IT IN 5 YEARS... -
Quote:i wouldnt disagree with that, where myself and coldmed and tank seem to disagree is that i feel that the gr expansion will have a significantly positive effect on population, because it will be a significant infusion of new content, the doomcrying population seems to have adopted the too little too late" mantra, and really there is no reasonable conclusion after one adopts that mindset but to close up shop, if you can't improve, then you die, and i'd prefer the game doesn't die. oh and eagles, they are philly, right? if so, i hope they lose huge. and until they dump that moron Vick, i hope they continue to lose.I'm not surprised that subs are down at the moment, honestly. It's been a while since a major content infusion, and a lot of people are trying out new stuff and waiting for Going Rogue. Even I haven't been playing much lately.
heck, i don't play as much, because the new job leaves less blocks of time to devote to the longer streaches of time need for mmo gaming. Co has been hit even harder for me. -
Interesting point about the mac, especially since a lot of pc players bought the mac pack for the costume set and free month. I'd have thought it would be higher. I do see a lot of players with valkyrie bits mixed in their costumes, so the view from the street was that a lot of people got either the full mac or the stand alone 10 dollar booster.

one thing i hope happens is that a lot of both blue and red players make their characters rogues and vigilantes. that way neither side suffers because they can join teams on both sides.
