Hey everyone, just a heads up. I'm migrating Unionverse to the new server this weekend. As a result there may be temporary periods where VirtueVerse will be down or temporarily locked while I make a few changes to the server to support the data import.
Apologizing ahead of time for any downtime, I will ensure I lock the site prior to taking the server down.
Please do not rely on making your edits in the editor window! Make your edits in an outside text editor!
I will attempt to keep all maintenance and downtime during the less busy hours of the evening and morning. -
Just a reminder, the site is going into lockdown in about three hours!
-
Just to let you guys know, we're aware the old server is down. We're working with support to figure out why.
Edit:
Server hamster had a heart attack. He's been revived. Site is back up. -
ReCaptcha will be part of the user registration process. You can see this now on VirtueVerse.
The goal is to avoid spam accounts that have been an issue in the past, so we're adding ReCaptcha to the user registration process and requiring everyone on both Wiki's to re-register in order to ensure spam/nonsense accounts aren't brought over.
You won't see a captcha for anything other then user registration, what I meant is you wont' need to use the captcha for page edits and uploads. -
Its official, UnionVerse will be moving to its brand new home this weekend! This means I need everyone to help me in getting out the word to your super groups and friends so everyone knows the site will be unavailable throughout the weekend. On Monday I will post the link to the new site here with the announcement. I'm sure the new URL is probably fairly obvious to everyone but please remember registration will be locked down during the migration and its easiest for me if the site doesn't have a ton of traffic while I do the imports.
The site will become unavailable @ 1700 EDT / 2200 BST on 22nd of October. (please let me know if I've got the time wrong for BST)

We need those in the Origin, Alignment and AT symbols!
I'd totally put a Brute one on my wall. -
VirtueVerse now has its own twitter feed. We'll be using this as well for updating the community.
http://twitter.com/virtueverse
You'll find recently edited pages, new pages and new posted here as well. For the moment it'll be posting the most recent three updates and new pages every so often. We'll look into other feeds we can set up as time goes on.
Please note, this is not meant to be a replacement for the news posted here or on the VirtueVerse main page, merely a supplement. -
Site Issue:
We are currently aware of an issue related to confirmation emails not being received by some users. We are working with the host to correct this issue and will let you know once it has been resolved.
This should not affect your ability to use the site. -
Quote:I actually really dig the first one, would be cool if we could get some art comic style to go in the background, but it would be easy to provide the site in several color schemes.Okay, I'll just throw these out there. I put a lot of thought and work into them, so I hope nobody copies me when the contest officially starts.
As a note as well. Some of these may see some use even if they aren't the main, they could become secondary skins available to users.
I'll see about rounding up some specs for everyone. The hard part will be rounding up prizes to offer. -

Being honest this doesn't need to get started again. We know BaBs has left, we do not know if he was part of the layoffs or not for certain. Most likely those layoffs were temporary people pulled on the help get GR out the door on time and now they're on the i19.
The studio is still 60 people strong.
This is not doom. -
If anyone else has ideas for Widgets let me know, I'll take new ones into consideration for the site.
I noticed a lot of people had playlists on their pages so i figured something like Grooveshark would be useful.
I'm working on a page now detailing the new widgets and how to use them. -
Quote:I have it on the story site for Rush Hour Hell, just a single song though that fits the story.I'll need to see that on display somewhere. Anyone use this on one of their pages yet?
-
Quote:It will still be a .com as well once we take down the old site. But we're tossing around the idea of a contest to redesign the site and the logo.Embedded supports and feeds? Great.
So when are you guys changing this old thing?
Quote:It's JPG. Unless there is a way to save it as something else with a lower size, which I don't think there is, it's staying above 150kb
And honestly, the hostility is not needed.
If you use Photoshop you can also use the Save for Web & Devices option to get the best possible JPG compression without degrading your image to far.
Yahoo also offers a great tool called Smush It which can help you compress images further. -

Quote:The old server had absolutely no restrictions, and people abused it. There were over 4 GB of image files alone and that was after the first round of culling. We decided to open up offsite linking to allow people to use larger images but while try to keep the space on the server down.So then you're saying that the .com has a larger restriction than the .net one?
That's pretty dumb, if you ask me. I happen to like Pinny's picture.
I'm sorry that you feed its "dumb" or overly restrictive, but please remember VirtueVerse has always been offered to the community for free, we don't take donations and the hosting is paid for by private parties. The new server has plenty of space, but we'd rather not see that immediately taken up again by people abusing the ability to upload images.
I'm not trying to be harsh, just realistic, no server is going to provide infinite disk space and we want to make sure we can keep this available to everyone for a long long time.
Note: People had been uploading image files that were several MB in size. Way to large to ever place on a website. -
Quote:How big is the file?Yeah...Uploading images on the new server isn't working for me. I'm trying to upload the very same image I have on my virtueverse.com profile, yet the .net servers get stuck on "waiting for ..." and then eventually give me a "page cannot be found" page. Afterwards if I try and go to the main .net site, the whole thing is down for me for a few minutes.
If its over 150 KB thats exactly what will happen, the server will refuse the request. Its not pretty but its unfortunately the only way we can keep people from uploading gigantic images like before.
If it is over 150 KB you can now use offsite linking so you could upload it to flickr or photobucket.
It is a very possible that if the image didn't come over from the .com site that its over 150 KB. We didn't transfer any of the large images. -
Added a new Widget. You can now add custom Grooveshark music playlists to your pages:

Did some updating to the S.C.O.R.P.I.O. page while I had a free moment. Still requires quite a bit of rewrite work, but I added a RSS Feed to our forums and the Picasa gallery.
http://www.virtueverse.net/wiki/Category:S.C.O.R.P.I.O. -
It has come to my attention that user sub pages may not have made the transition. I will look into an import for those pages on Friday. Until then feel free to manually copy them if you wish.
-
I've request this thread be locked and replaced with the new one.

Quote:Hey guys! I just want to give you an update. VirtueVerse has been officially moved to the new site, http://www.virtueverse.net.Hey guys! I'm just passing some info on. We're going to be migrating Virtueverse to the new server starting the weekend of Oct 8-11. We're hoping to do Union the following weekend Oct 15-18.
What this means is the site is going to be on complete lockdown and users will be directed to the new site once its ready.
Check out this post for some details on new features coming with the upgrade: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...&postcount=615
Please make sure this message gets passed along. Its a big deal and I want to make sure everyone has a heads up to whats happening.
I was hoping to be able to tackle Union this coming weekend but I've been shanghai'd into helping a friend of mine move. So the move for Union will be happening the weekend after Oct 22-24th.
The plus side is I've already done this now with Virtueverse so I know exactly where the snags are and will happen, so it should be a fairly smooth transition for Union.
As a note, like with VirtueVerse I will be leaving the .com address on the old server for a period of time after the migration for people to grab content that wasn't migrated. But the goal eventually will be to move that domain to the new server and ensure all the old links work. Union will be using the new pretty url /wiki/Page like virtueverse does now rather then /index.php/Page. -
Well, we had a pretty heated "discussion" about whether to enable some of these items for everyone. But at the end of the day we decided that given the very low amount of past incidents where people added Terms violating content and the general community nature of the site we figured you guys would do a good job of policing yourself.
-
Let us know if you guys notice a lot of pages missing that should have been transfered. We tried to avoid bringing over a lot of the junk pages, but if there seems to be a large amount missing we can do another automatic import thats a bit less strict of content that isn't on the new site already.

Just a quick update. The content has been moved successfully onto the new server. We're doing a bit of testing now and tuning on the server. We'll be providing everyone with the place to access it tomorrow. So keep an eye here for information.
