Another one I just remembered - a couple years ago I was watching a movie, I think it was "Go," and was shocked to see perennial bad*** Timothy "Marshall Givens/Sherrif Bullock" Oliphant in the character of a goofy drug dealer/user. Pretty sure that was the movie, but like I said, it's been a couple years.
-
I think one of my all-time biggest "Bwah???" moments was when I caught a rerun of Adventures in Babysitting (yes, I like that movie) and, when watching the end credits, I realized that...
"Thor"
was played by...
Vincent D'onofrio
Quote:I'll always remember him for the animated Lord of the Rings.Ralph Bakshi, producer & animation director.
Better known for his 'adult' animated feature Fritz the Cat & others.
Recently happened to me twice - during the Fringe two part season finale where I couldn't place the one actress as Charlotte on Lost, and the New Girl season finale where I couldn't place "new roommate" Neil as Lt. Dangle from Reno 911. -
Since there's typically only three of us these days, here's my plan based on Bull's post - I'll log in at 7 PM as usual and start on Merc's long needed respec. By the time I'm done we can see if Bull's in game and if not, decide whether to play or just wait until next week.

OK, Superman can move the moon, so if Mjolnir was sitting on the moon and Superman started pushing it from the other side, would the hammer begin to bury itself?

Quote:I like to imagine Odin snickering to himself as he rushes to post a video of the smack down to UruTube before Heimdall can.Let's imagine for a moment that the all-seeing ODIN, King of Asgard, was observing the events in Avengers and saw HULK turn Loki into a rag doll and leave him embedded in the floor as says "Puny God"
What do you think ODIN's reaction would be? I'll sum up my guess in word:
"....whoa." -
From wikipedia...
Quote:Mjolnir has been wielded by a select number of other individuals: alien Beta Ray Bill; Avenger Captain America can pick up Thor's hammer.; Eric Masterson; Odin (Thor's father); Borr (Thor's grandfather); and Buri (also known as Tiwaz, Thor's great-grandfather).
The hammer has also been lifted by various sentient constructs (non-sentient machines apparently cannot), such as Zarrko the Tomorrow Man's mining robot; the Air-Walker (animated by the soul of Nova Corps captain Gabriel Lan); and the Awesome Android (by mimicking Thor's abilities and worthy nature). The hammer has also been lifted by Earth itself when animated via magical means.
There are also several other non-canon instances of other characters lifting the hammer, including: Conan the Barbarian; Dargo Ktor (Future Thor); Loki; Magni; Rogue (after absorbing the entirety of Thor's life force and thus essentially becoming Thor); Miguel O'Hara (Spider-Man 2099); Woden; Alex Power; and the DC Comics characters Superman (though he was unable to later that issue and Thor claimed Odin had briefly lifted the enchantment) and Wonder Woman.

Finally saw this last night. It was a 6:40 PM showing, and there were maybe 20-25 other people in the theater - not packed, but not bad for a mid-size town on a rainy Monday night.
Loved the movie, and pretty much the great lines and scenes have all been hashed out in this thread, but the one thing I got a chuckle out of that I didn't see anyone else mention was mark Ruffalo in the end-of-credits sceen. Watch his face - everyone is sitting there looking dead tired, not saying a word, and he just subtly starts cracking up. I don't know if it was an acting choice, or just a natural reaction to the absurdity of them sitting around a little cafe in their super suits eating sandwiches. I tend to think it was the later.
Other thoughts...
- I will be saddened if they bring Coulson back. I liked his character, but bringing him back would cheapen his death, not just for the characters, but for the audience as well. It will also make any other death suspect and less impactful.
- Much like... Forbin, I think it was(?), my dad was born in 1917, and served in the US Navy in the south Pacific during WWII. He married and had kids late in life - he was 49 when I was born in 1967. Robert Downey Jr. was born two years before me, so it's completely reasonable that Howard Stark was a young adult in the 1940s and had Tony at a similar later point in his life.
- If they feature new superheroes in Avengers 2, I certainly hope they will go with Wasp and Ant-Man, or better yet, Giant Man. I have nothing against Ms. Marvel, or Captain Marvel, or She-Hulk, but as founding members of the Avengers, I think Hank and Janet need to be included next time around.
- Regarding a storyline, I never read the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, so I don't know what it was really about or how difficult it would be to bring to the screen, but as Thanos loves(?) worships(?) Death, I could see him coming to Earth, not to enslave humans, but to kill them all. And unless they make the Hulk intelligent next time, I really think there needs to be a sequence where he goes out of control and it takes the combined might of all the remaining Avengers to take him down.
- Joss mentioning that he may finally be recognized at Comic-Con is pretty funny and very true. I first met him at Comic-Con in... 2006 I think. He was sitting at a side table in the DC booth chatting with someone - an editor, or writer maybe, I don't know, but he was completely anonymous - no one passing by was paying him any attention. I had my Firefly cast photo with me and so I stood off to the side until he was finished talking and then politely asked for his autograph. He signed my photo, and afterward agreed to let me take a picture with him. He seemed completely taken aback that I wanted either of these things, but I guess a few other fans recognized him and began asking for autographs after me. Although one person did ask me who he was, and when I told him, the guy merely shrugged and walked off.
I will definitely be going to see Avengers again, perhaps this weekend with friends, because I'm sure there were things I missed that I will pick up on durning a second viewing. For one thing - I didn't see Amadeus Cho in the TV interview segment, and I'm guessing there were a few other easter eggs on those screens as well. Also, I didn't realize that Alexis Denisof was the head Chitari! (But I did recognize Evan, Evar, whats-his-name from Dollhouse as a cop) -
Quote:I dunno, I think Anthony Daniels was pretty adept at conveying See-Threepio's emotions despite being hidden behind an unchanging mask.Masks are not very expressive, hence superheroes in movies tend to loose them whenever they need to emote and/or feel angst when their parents inevitably die. Why do you think that the Iron Man movies keep cutting to a inside the helmet view whenever Tony says anything?

Quote:But... didn't everyone assume Kirk had died during the explosion onboard the Enterprise B at the beginning of "Generations?" As far as I know, Picard is the only one who even knew Kirk was on Veridian III.Also I've theorized before that if they had wanted to undo that stupid death Kirk had in Generations that the Guardian of Forever is the best tool for that job too. Spock could scan the time frame of Kirk's fight with Soran and then figure out when to step in and phaser blast Soran. They then safely stop the missile and Kirk lives. But way too late for that now, unless they decide to CGI de-age and slim down Shatner.

Quote:Um, I would potentially order a veggie burger with bacon. I eat veggie burgers to limit my intake of fat and cholesterol, not because I'm a vegetarian. I realize adding bacon would be counter to that reasoning, but it's still better than adding bacon to a ground beef burger.ROFLMAO!
While I can understand a vegetarian's desire to not eat meat -- even though I can't relate to that desire -- now I want to go order one somewhere, just to see the look on their faces. "One veggie burger with cheese, extra mayo, with extra bacon! Hmmm. 'Add bacon to any burger, 99 cents.' For $1.98, could I have EXTRA extra bacon on that?!"
Meanwhile, in actual thread-related news, thanks for my free xp boosters (one on each account)!
On topic, I completely forgot about this last night, and could easily have missed out, only days after commenting that people should write themselves a note if they don't want to miss out. Oops. -

Quote:There's only so much you can do to account for people's stupidity. This is why there are warnings on chainsaws not to grab the blade while it's running, and warnings on curling irons not to use them in your sleep.May I suggest that since you're dealing with a global community, the 24 hour paradigm for a 'day' is insufficient unless you had the capacity to stagger the 24 hour time frame for each time zone.
For example, you realize that starting at Midnight locally for you is problematic since:
- that's not everbody else's Midnight; and,
- we're not at work at Midnight to make sure it happens
However, ending it at 4 PM PT on Friday is not so wise for a program called Freebie Friday for anyone in the world who is not living in London's time zone. People in the rest of the world will get home from work or school on Friday, log into in the game to claim the reward and, WHAAAH whahhhhh, no freebie item.
You will then deal with innumerable claims of you going around nazi slapping everyone in the clock face because they missed out on a Freebie Friday even though it is actually Friday for them. Mark my words, ending Freebie Friday before 12 PM on Friday in at least Pacific Time (should actually go to 6 AM Saturday PT for the islanders) will be very complaintful when the time comes and goes.
A full 'global day' is 48 hours long. Any offer you do should ideally be that long, or, at least, 36 hours long.
If you don't live in the one time zone in the world where the beginning and end of this occur on Friday, write yourself a freaking note. -
At the Player Summit they announced a new thing they were going to try called Freebie Fridays on the Paragon Market. I was out of town last Friday with no access to my computer, so I was curious whether this happened. I think I recall them saying they'd be trying it out during the month of May to see how players liked it, but I could be mistaken.
Didn't notice any announcements or other threads related to this topic either. -
Off topic, but something that always bothered me about WoK - Ceti Alpha VI exploded, and messed up the environment on Ceti Alpha V, right? But why would the Reliant think CA5 was CA6? It was still the fifth rock from Ceti Alpha, right?

Already thinking about which villain groups fit my play style.
And I certainly agree with the need to bring in fresh blood. You guys are great, but the journey from 1-50 would be painful with just us three. -
Merc is going to be running (pun also intended) late tonight guys. I'm just getting ready to leave work and need to pcik something up to eat on the way home. I'll try to be in game no more than half an hour late.

Quote:Count me among the ones who did that as well. I took the survey at the Summit, and I think I ranked the choices with 1 as "want least" and 15 as "want most". If that's backwards of the way it was supposed to work, I think the survey is going to wind up providing lots of mixed and unintentional responses.I'm realizing now that I should have made this suggestion:
Zwillinger, for future surveys, you may get less mistakes if questions are always oriented so that the "good" rating is always on the same side.
I realize that this was my mistake for not reading directions, but if you want the most accurate feedback possible, I think this would help.
I'm still kicking myself for delivering the opposite of what I intended. Anyone actually reading my survey would figure it out easily, but I have the feeling the results are just going to be aggregated. Oh well.
Also, is this survey different than the one at the Summit? I don't remember that question about cross-server teaming, player housing, etc. on the Summit survey. And if it is different, are we allowed to take it again? I might be able to clear up my backwards responses. -
The summit was fun, but the highlight of the weekend for me, as dumb as it sounds, was oepning my goody bag and finding issue #10 of the Blue King comicbook series - it is the one issue of that series I have never been able to track down singularly, and now my CoH comics collection is complete!
Not sure if I'll make it to the fall summit, assuming there is one, but if I do, I'll make a weekend out of it instead of a 36 hour, 5,200 mile round trip.
Speaking of which, I had a few ideas for future summits...
Have a forum, or e-mail, poll a month before the next summit to allow those who cannot attend to make suggestions regarding new power sets or costume packs. Have someone from P.S. sort, categorize and tally all the pre-summit responses, then, at the summit, the attendees could receive cards in their goody bags that list the top three or top five vote-getters in each category.
Instead of pitching their own ideas on the cards, each attendee would then vote for which of the three or five ideas they like best, and turn in their cards. At the individual panels, the top vote-getter in each category would be revealed and worked on like it was at this summit. That would give non-attendees a voice, but also give attendees more input into design of the set. It would also free up the time during the panel that was dedicated to pitches to work on design ideas instead.
I didn't include the Zone Revamps in the above idea because they were handled differently with the focus on the pitch and little audience participation. The Z.R. panelists also seemed to have more input/ideas/restictions on zone revamps regarding what could and couldn't be done. In the future zone revamps could be included in the pre-summit poll, but instead of being open-ended, they could be presented as 4-6 ideas from the Devs for players to vote on. Then, at the Zone Revamp panel at the summit, the winning idea could be presented, and the hour could be dedicated to an audience "brainstorming" session as to what the players would like to see in that zone in the future.
Just some thoughts to give non-attendees a voice, while still giving attendees a greater voice, and perhaps maximizing the potential of each panel. -
Please tell me this isn't a one-day event that will be taking place on the one day that I'm 3000 miles away from my computer attending another one-day event.
Or at least tell me there's not a badge I'm going to miss out on by not logging in tomorrow. -
Quote:Do they though? Do "fantasy" worlds like this truely evolve and change over the course of thousands of years? I can't think of many examples, but two that spring to mind seem to counter your assertion:I'm sorry but even "fantasy" worlds like this usually tend to follow -some- kind of logic, or at least offer some kind of explanation for why logic should be disregarded if necessary. If the books explain -why- nothing's changed in thousands of years I might be more willing to accept the scenario in question.
Lord of the Rings - From the time that Sauron was originally defeated and the One Ring was lost, hundreds or thousands of years passed, and yet no one had invented guns, or radios or cars, or seemingly made any other sort of technological breakthrough.
Star Wars - The days of "The Old Republic" take place, what 4000 years or so before the movies? Yet in those days they had starships capable of interstellar travel, they had blasters, lightsabers, and droids. They weren't reduced to our current level of technological advancement, and yet in the intervening 4000 years they hadn't developed intergalactic travel, teleportation, or any other sort of unimaginable technology.
I think writers just like to throw out the "1000s of years of history" line to make their world seem more rich and full with no real intention of fleshing out the logic of why nothing has changed for those thousands of years. -
Just checked in for my 6 AM flight tomorrow morning and was able to get an upgrade to first class for $150! I normally pass on those, but for a six hour flight, that is more than worth it.

I just seem to recollect that the "Anniversay" festivities always happened on the Thursday closest to the Anniversary, but that could be because the Anniversary fell on Thursday last year, and also because I don't recollect so go no more.
