  1. As my AR/EM blaster has been through several iterations and I have, at one time or another, used Sniper, Beanbag and Repulsion Bomb I can, from personal experience, say that I prefer Ignite.

I am not saying that the other powers don't have thier uses or that Ignite isn't limited in it's application. What I am saying is that Ignite fits my style of play and gives me a certain utility I find occasional use for that I did not find in those other powers.

    How I use Ignite:

Keeps spawns bottled up in rooms and tight passages.

Placed under certain "hard to kill" foes that do not flee the Burn or are somehow otherwise immobilized.

For foes stuck in walls that you can't target.

Placed under my own feet, when overrun, for getting melee mobs to back off.

When teamed with a toon that has area immob or hold.

Ability to place graphic under "freindly" toons for fun!

You ARE aware that's (6 sec recharge time for Auto Fire) impossible right Filcher?
Actually the build as posted has a recharge time of 19.7 sec's. With a Recharge IO in place of the Damage Proc it gets down to 17.3. Sorry for the hyperbole...I got all excited about how quick it "seems" in actual play. I have seen it recharge in about 12 secs on a Hami raid with all the stacked buffs.

Still shootin' Romy on an ITF every 20 sec's or so w/Auto Fire from relative safety outside of the Healing Nic's range is pretty awesome!

I have played an SR Stalker to 50, and never had an issue with ASing except when faced with KoA (Caltrops) or sometimes enemies that use burn patches.
NEVER? So you mean to tell me at no time while leveling up your SR Stalker did you have a single issue of being interrupted while ASing in a large melee setting (remember we are talking about being on a team not solo)? I find that simply incredulous.

    Quote:
I don't use set IOs. All he has are SOs and Common IOs. So, I see your anecdotal evidence, and disprove it with my own anecdotal evidence.
I guess you skipped over the part...(which "usually" means set IO's)...I'm certain an SR has a much easier time capping defense without set IO's than any of the resist sets. And you admit yourself that you wouldn't play a resist based armor set on a Stalker...so how's that increased damage output working out for them?

The easy fix is to remove the interuptabilty of AS in PvE. It still has a long cast time and rooting animation to balance out the high damage value. The only thing this change would do is allow Stalkers (read ALL Stalkers not just the capped out defense based armors) the OPTION of using AS/Placate in a large melee environment.

    Quote:
Couldn't they have made it a self-granting temp power, though? Like, instead of granting the target a demoralize 'temp power' that then affects all within range of him, why not just grant it to yourself everytime you pull of an AS? Just make it not affect self. I'm sure they tried this already, I just want to know why it didn't work.
I thought the same thing myself when I read this. Why not just have an effect centered on the Stalker triggered by a succesful attack?
  4. Read through most of the posts...agree w/most of the assessments. I'm partial to AR/EM. A poster mentiond Full Auto every 30 sec's...my build does it every 6 secs. I don't know how that stacks up with other blaster builds but I can fire Full Auto outside of alpha strike range follow up with Flame Thrower and then Buckshot so that by the time whats left of the spawn reaches me all it takes is a slug or 2 (if that) to finish off what was once a horde of foes.

    Here's my build:

    I Wanna Go BOOM!

Thanks, Stygian Circle recharges in 10.5 sec's so it really doesnt need any recharge slotted into it. I don't know if I could get the recharge low enough to use multiple times on the same group of dead foes but generally 1 activation fills my bars (on my current WS who isn't built to go boom!).

Has anyone tried this strategy? And if so... How does it play? What are the weaknesses? How did you compensate? What value is it to a team? Does it work (read as good as or better than a "standard" build) solo?

    Thank you.

I read about perma-Eclipse and thought it'd be cool to try and build a WS that could use Quasar as a regular attack. Here's my 1st attempt:

The devs aren't going to redesgin...
Maybe, maybe not. They have redisigned a lot of things based on suggestions in the forums and made a multitude of minor tweeks to improve game play. That aside nothing will ever get changed if we don't bring it up for discussion.

    Quote:
First, Placate/AS works fine with defense-based sets.
So Stalkers don't get damage resist sets? Or are you saying Stalkers with damage resist sets shouldn't use Placate/AS? Even with Defense based sets Placate/AS is not easy to use in large melee until you have capped out defense (which usually means set IO's) so I don't think this is a valid argument for the status quo.

    Quote:
Second, recent changes to the AT make it far less dependent on AS...
And this is good how? To make a Stalker "viable" in a team setting they reduced the need to use the Stalker's premier power? Damage output was never the Stalker's problem! Why not just make AS more usable by removing the interruptability (again in PvE only)?
  10. The slotting levels were a hold over. Thanks for fixing that. As for the rest you make some good points...again thank you. Here's a version using Dwarf. It gives the build a bit more flexibility but Human form powers take a hit. Eclipse > Mire > Quasar becomes an every now and again combo as opposed to an every other spawn tactic. However in open terrain it allows for relatively safe hover blasting and in tight terrain it allows for psuedo-tanking and, when the situation calls for it, it allows for a big boom.

So I guess my question is...is it better to go Dwarfless and have the Quasar combo up more or go Dwarf and be able to psuedo-tank?

  11. I was playing around in Mid's with the idea of making Nova form my #1 option. I figured since Blasters can cap ranged defense and play hover-blaster it could be done for Nova. I don't know if this is an original idea but here is my build for consideration and comment:

  12. Good points. Thank you for the feedback.

I still think AS should have it's interuptability removed in PvE. Play a Bane Spider sometime and you'll understand how it would work.

I like the idea of changing the Fear effect to a small AoE Confuse. That, and the removal of Interrupt, would make AS infinitely more usable in a large melee environment. In fact if this was done it would give the Stalker a secondary role on a team (of damage mitigator) and remove the need for an AoE on Placate.

I didn't consider what would occur to the rest of the party with multpile foes being Placated. I guess it might represent a problem for squishies. Another resolution might be to make Placate like Parry. A minor damage attack that has a Placate effect attached. That way it can be added to the attack chain (possibly lowering overall DPS) and allowing for a follow up of AS (modified as above) giving a Stalker the option to go for a high DPS ST attack chain or high burst damage with damage mitigation.

    Thoughts?
  13. Yeah I used Air Sup as a sorta poor man's Placate early on. Its great if you are fighting spawns of 3 or less. What I'm speaking to is the Stalkers poor performance in a team environment or against large spawns in PvE (I appologize if I didn't make that clear).

I have NO trouble soloing a Stalker and I understand how to play them (lack of leveling comes from solo boredom more than anything else). I just find they are exceptionally ill equipped to participate in the team dynamic that is CoH. I run ITF's, LGTF's and Hami raids on a fairly regular basis and rarely do I see a Stalker. Those times that a Stalker does join the team I find their contribution less than average (to be kind).

The Stalker is a melee toon but if you are looking for melee on a large team which do you choose...Scrapper, Brute, Tank or Stalker...I bet Stalker is last on everyones list. The only time I found a Stalker to be marginally effective was when they had Recall Friend and could assist in stealth/tp on a mission. The suggestions I made are not meant to make Stalkers "super-uber" just make them more playable/desirable in a team dynamic.
  14. I don't know about the numbers but I know I really like my SD/EM Tank. Here's the final level 50 build out:

  15. I've leveled just about every other AT to 50 with multiple combinations of power sets. The glaring exception to my list of level 50's is the Stalker class. I have tried several different power combinations and can never seem to get past the mid-20's. That said I have a few observations and some suggestions for the Stalker class (note these suggestions are for PvE only).

    1) Assasin's Strike: This power takes away an attack in your regular attack chain and generally cannot be used in combat with multiple opponents (see also Placate below). The problem, as I see it, is that once you've used AS you have less damage mitigation than any other melee class and are unable to use your premier power. Remove the interuptability in PvE and increase the fear effect (both number of affected and duration). This will allow Assasins Strike to actually be used in a regular attack chain and help mitigate damage from large spawns. To balance that out make critical automatic and give it a chance to double-critical while hidden but no critical while un-hidden, remove the fear effect while un-hidden and adjust the base damage accordingly.

    2) Placate: Awesome...if you are fighting 1 target! Unfortunately on a team in PvE (or even solo many times) you have multiple targets and placating one of them does very little to mitigate damage or allow you to get another AS in. Give Placate a small area of affect (with a cap of 5 foes...like Taunt) and a short duration which allows the Stalker to mitigate damage and execute an AS without faceplanting in the middle of melee.

These 2 changes would make the Stalker class much more team friendly and a much better at melee in large spawns without changing the single strike capability.

    Elec/Shield/Fire

Thank you. I had been contemplating Fireball as well and wanted your thoughts on it. Currently my ST attack chain is T.Strike>H.Punch>SoMu>C.Brawl. Generally speaking after B.Up>L.Rod>S.Charge the only spawn left standing is a boss which usually goes down before my ST chain is finished. With a recharge of 52.5% and Hasten I rarely find LR/SC down when I need them. In addition I slotted a Force Feedback (chance for recharge) Proc into T.Strike.

Leveling up, of course, I did not have the advantage of set bonuses (as I didn't start slotting sets until I hit level 49) so I alternated LR and SC and relied on my ST chain a lot more. Still I never took Chain Induction or Jacobs Ladder and, if I had to do it over again, I don't think I would. Then again I also had the advantage of Sands of Mu which may not be available to you.

    Elec/Shield/Fire

Just a curiosity but if you have almost perma-hasten why do you need another AoE attack? I mean isn't SC and LR up often enough that you can use them whenever you need to? Doesn't the combination of SC/LR generally wipe out spawns for you? I guess I'm not understanding the need for a 3rd AoE AND such a high recharge. Can you explain how you utilize the build and why it would be more effective than a build that didn't have Fireball? Thank you.

...if you are not going to slot anything in orbiting Death, go for one of the other attacks or shields
I toyed with switching out OD for an attack or a shield but I wouldn't have the slots to make them effective either. Quite frankly no matter what power I put in that slot it's rarely going to be used if at all. OD looks cool so it's actually more of a costume power

    Quote:
The guassian proc is a nice one to slot in Nova form. If you want to keep the stealth IO, move it to a sprint.
I agree the Gausian is a "nice to have" proc and if I could find the slot for it I would certainly put it in Nova. The reason I slotted stealth into Nova is three-fold, first it allows me to move in Nova form with less worry about accidentally running into a spawn, secondly it gives me time to position myself for attacks without detection and lastly I wanted the set bonus. If I were to slot a Stealth IO in sprint I would have to change forms every 2 minutes to maintain stealth (and reactivate Sprint each time) besides the Human form already has a stealth capability.

You might try looking at eff adapter in Eclipse. That set gives some nice bonuses.
I'll certainly take a look at that. I thought Eclipse was primarily for damage resistance though?

Well I redid my build after noticing I had some "rule of 5" issues. Here's my newest iteration:

    Rule of 5?

Wow I didn't realize set bonuses carry over...cool! That makes my slotting a whole lot easier. Thank you for the replies.
  20. filcher

    Rule of 5?

Do sets in one of the forms (Dwarf/Nova) count towards the rule of 5? Since the bonuses carry over I would assume the rule would only apply to the sets you have slotted into the form that is active. Mids counts all the sets slotted towards the rule of 5, is this correct?

There are other powers such as this, like most of your toggles where you could (and should) substitute the plain Defense IO for a Def/End or a LotG triple for 9% acc set bonus.
Good point I'll take a look at that.

Agreed with a caveat. If you are fighting +4 boss spawns that have defense debuff it might be useful to overshoot the soft cap. Comes in handy vs certain AV's and GM's as well. And, quite frankly, I wasn't even trying for that much defense it just worked out that way.

I believe that this point is debatable. See the above caveat. And don't forget it's not always you that your target is swinging at.

I'll try playing it as slotted and if I run into endurance issues I will consider your suggestion. Thank you.

It's actually very clear how taunt mechanisms work. Rather than go into the explanation here lets just say the Stealth IO won't override either the AAO taunt aura, Taunt or Gauntlet to the extent it's noticable. Additionally I put the Stealth IO in Sprint so I could toggle it off and on as needed and if I'm having issues holding agro I will simply turn it off for the duration. Not only that but it gives a nice 1.5% hp bonus for 3 slotting the set.

You've brought up some great points for consideration and I'll certainly take them into account as I level up this toon. Thank you.
  22. Thank you for the replies. They were very helpful. I am especially appreciative for the ctrl-b hot key command in mids! Here's my updated build:

If you run the numbers you will see that he has a defense of melee 44.7% ranged 47% and aoe 46%. He has a regeneration bonus of 393%, a recharge bonus of 52.5% and a recovery bonus of 192%. I did switch out Vengeance for Grant Cover for the Defense Debuff Resistance (since I didn't slot for Damage Resistance those cascading defense failures can be catastrophic) and my teammates really appreciate the defensive aura I put out between GC and Manuevers. I find that those times I need some damage resistance One With Shield does just fine and I hardly notice the endurance crash (I just pop Conserve Power and keep on moving).
  24. Ok I admit I just downloaded Mids and have been playing with some concept toons. This is my level 50 plan for my SD/DM Tank (currently level 21). I'm looking for some constructive critique. Thank you.
