This is the impression I get. I like CoX because it's like reading a book/comic/watching a film. I want to be able to play the game without worrying about making the "wrong choice" Going Rogue is a great idea but I'd rather it was an arc that can be done (or not) depending on whether you want to.
I want to play a comic book, not write it. And, while I'm all for new ATs; "City of Not-quite-heroes-but-not-really-evil-villains-either" just doesn't float my boat.
Sorry NC, but mission creator, power customisation and new zones are great - I just don't want anything to do with your "moral compass".
And yes - I think that it may be enough to push me away from the game.
[/ QUOTE ]
Do you really mean that you've never ever done a mission or arc where you've found yourself wishing you were able to do it in a different way?
[/ QUOTE ]
Thanks for your reply Golden Girl
No - I'm not saying that I've never thought that an ending could use a little more "oomph", but then again I've never thought - in the middle of the Westin Phipps Arc [Probably the most discussed CoV Spoiler ever ahead...!] "If only I could save these Freaks, maybe help teach them the error of their ways..." And the reason I've never thought that? Because I'm playing a Villain! [end of Spoiler]
If I wanted to take my villain across to Paragon City for anything other than panic and mayhem (maybe she has a crisis of conscience after the Westin thing) then she can go to a completely seperate contact and "confess", take her penance and then move across.

There is an irony to what you are saying you know. It's easy to be a hero in this game because you dont have the choice NOT to be. (I'm referring to an alt you actually play on CoH.)
As someone who likes to play a comic book, wouldnt it be more involving if you actually have to make certain decisions, avoid temptations to steer you away from the dark side?
Isn't it more heroic to make the right choice ratherthan be a hero because there is no choice at all?
And on your last point, why throw away an entire game just because they introduce something that you can ignore simply by playing the way youve always played in the first place?

Hi Lionsbane
I'm afraid I can't see the irony here. If I read a comic book/novel/or watch a film I can't change the outcome - that doesn't spoil the immersion or destroy the story, and the fact that millions of comics/books/movies are still selling world wide suggests that a lot of people feel the same.
That's why I like CoH, as you said - it's easy to be a hero - and as a casual player one of the main things I look for in a game is ease of use. I've been playing CoX for over 3 years BECAUSE it's easy. I tried WoW for a couple of weeks but couldn't get away with it - it was based on a hugely established economy and I couldn't even break in... Then I tried LOTRO which was too fiddly.
CoX has always appealed to the casual gamer because it's so easy, and I think anything they add that muddies that simplicity - without making it optional - may hurt this side of the game.
And to answer the "why throw away?" question - because I can't play the game the same way that I always have. I'd need to double check the answers to all the story arcs I play. And If I decide that I don't WANT to read the story, I just want to blast through contacts hitting 'next' each time - I can't, because I have to make a decision.
I'm not saying that Going Rogue is a bad thing, nor am I saying that I wouldn't use it if it came out. I'm saying that the "moral compass" is too much of a fiddle on being added to a wonderfully simple game. That's what would drive me away. And it's not a threat and I'm not foolish enough to thing that the Devs or the Community team are reading this thinking "Oh noes! - Ethan's thinking of going - we must stop the development of the morality compass" - I'm absolutely aware that my money is a drop in the ocean for NCNC, but I wouldn't be playing the same game anymore.
I'm afraid I can't remember who said it - but I think it was mentioned earlier in this thread - KISS, Keep it simple silly! -

But daddy isn't holding my hand at all atm. The arcs are what they are, and I enjoy them for that fact. Turning, say, Peter Themari's arc into [SPOILER]
do you a) take pryss out, or b) tell her the truth and beat the snot out of thermai, or c) do nothing and have a cup of tea, would *totally* cheapen it for me. Did you ever use to read those adventure books? 'did you eat the melon? turn to page 98, if you didn't and fought the wolves, turn to page 4...
Are their stories comparable to great works of fiction that don't give you a choice of outcome. I know that's subjective, but I'm pretty sure that one of those is far more popular and renowned than the other

Now, if you agree with this post go to page 43
If you disagree with the post go to page 20

The cave maps don't quite make me physically sick, but I must admit I find them quite disorienting. I tried First Person and also quite close up to the back of my characters' heads but I find that I end up ducking - WHAT!?! Why are you all looking at me like that? Don't you?
-
Sands of Mu for me - Just so that I can shout "Thousand Hand Slap" in a mock oriental voice when I use it.
Ah, the memories! -
Of course - it always was me me me with you wasn't it Amanda?
Well let me tell the citizens of Paragon MY side.
It's true Amanda, Leo and I were at school together, and yes we worked well together. Amanda's little devices helped to keep some of the bullies away, and my chemistry knowledge meant that those who did get close very soon wished they hadn't. Leo's calming influence helped to stop me getting any backlash. Yes I suppose they were good times, but Amanda... I mean she really was a know-it-all, and such a goody two shoes. Even Ghandi would have had difficulty putting up with her!
Anyway, after Leo left I just couldn't cope with her holier than thou attitude and I snapped. It could have happened to anyone - really! So, what does a chemistry major do to get his own back at someone who's upset him? That's right - poison!
It wasn't my fault she lived in a huge apartment block, and that the only water source was connected to all the flats... And how was I supposed to know that there were a number of elderly residents? Anyway - they were old, and it was probably near their time.
So Amanda made it her mission to track me down, of course this was only after she'd reported me to the authorities meaning that I was a fugitive. I've used the money that I made from our first business to set up a couple of holding companies and using the money from that I've started to hire myself some muscle.
So, as you can see, Amanda and I have a little bit of, background. When Leo called me I thought the SCQ sounded like a good idea, but it's been so long since I took orders that I just couldn't do it. Hence the birth of the BRPE.
The Leo dropped the bombshell, he'd invited Amanda along too! Well, she couldn't be outdone by me now could she? So she set up HERO. As if that wasn't bad enough, Leo hadn't come up with the idea by himself, nooo - he'd been working with another bloody hero - Lady Leprechaun, so there I was, outnumbered 3 to 1 by heroes. We'll see how things go tonight shall we? -
And thank you for your kind words too FrIce!
Hope you get some entries soon -
FrIce,
I believe that I may have seen a similar idea before however I think that any more of these competitions can only be a good thing!
Of course as you are merely a hero I, and my colleagues, know that this competition can only whet the appetite of those who would enter the Supreme Superhero Awards and so I would like to wish you the best of luck.
Dr. Red -
Whoops!
Sorry CoX people, and thanks for the note Vox! I'm guessing not a lot of people know about the DC Character though as I've been using the name on various alts finding an AT that fits for about 2 1/2 years!
Gah, I suppose I'd best think of a new name. Hmmm...
I may have to start reading comic books (or graphic novels!) to make sure I don't make the same mistake again!
Oh, and thanks for the clarification Mighty! -
As I said in the subject line, I'm not sure if this is creative, plagerism, or just plain theft.
I've started keeping a blog for my hero, Liberty Belle, and am uing the story arc that I'm currently playing. Can I just check if it's OK?
Obviously if I'm breaching copyright or anything please tell me, and also any hints and tips for improvement will be gratefully received!
Thanks in advance for your help everyone!

Turtle Shell
Required Powers: Personal Forcefield
This is a fairly cheap tactic, but effective. Essentially, you constantly stay inside of a PFF and command your henchmen from relative safety. The henchmen lose the benefit of Supremacy, any other buffs you have and you will be unable to summon more. However your opponent will invariably be targetting you, and not your henchmen allowing for some fairly risk-free damage. Best done post-Single Origin slotting, so that your henchmen have enough innate damage and accuracy and possibly with Aid Self/Heal Insps, so you can keep on top of any damage you do take.
[/ QUOTE ]
Unfortunately the nasty devs (Boo! Hiss!) have taken this tactic away from us now. In test you can't command your pets when invis, in PFF or using any other "Only affecting self" power - Bah!
However I do have a suggestion that I used to some effect in Base Raids...
Kamikaze Tank
Required - PFF, This is only really any use when you're in a team. A Mastermind with PFF and a few green insps can last quite long time under sustained fire, so run in first and take the alpha, while you get your team mates to aim at the controllers and wallop them quickly. Sure you die, but usually in that time your team manages to get a couple of the others (If they use a concerted attack on one specific character) -
I wish I could claim that I was able to deify you, best I could probably manage is an /em worship!! However it does seem to be a completely accurate consensus across the forums!
Oh, and thanks for the binds! -
I (like a lot of people) use the God of Masterminds - Master Zaprobo's binds for my pets... but I have just bought a new fab 'n' funky mouse that has two extra buttons, and I was wondering if anyone could help me...
I'd like to attach a bind to each button with the 2 commands I use the most - all pets attack my target, and with I7 coming out all pets follow defensive!!!
Can anyone help me with a bind for my 4th and 5th mouse buttons please?
Oh, and thanks in advance... -
Well done Thorny!
It's always nice to find out a bit of background about characters - It makes them feel a bit more rounded.
kudos for you hon! -
I know you've had the answer - but I'd just like to add my 'tuppence...
I made the mistake of picking it... I have never really had chance to use it (OK slight exaggeration - 3x in about as many months!), every team I've been on; by the time I get to the dead guy someone else has rezzed them, or they've swallowed that bloody awaken...
For me it has been about as much use as the new look PFF when you're out of bots! I'm sure that others have probably had a really good time with it but personally I can't wait to freespec it out! -
Whilst I would hate to question the Awesome magnificence of the Computer, I was wondering if any word was going to be heard of this group?
Or maybe it has been and I am simply not a high enough security clearance, if so please accept my apologies!
I can find my own way to the recycling room.... -

And, a bit like CoX I think I may have been more of a liability most of the time!
I was more a White-Wolf Girl, V:tM and Mage were my games...
Oh, and we had a few games of "Carry on D&D" - just for a laugh! -

Ok so you helped a lot ther TL thx
But just to conferm, this is a table top RPG like Warhammer right? Because i play Warhammer so im no stranger to table top gameing
[/ QUOTE ]
Erm...
Not if you mean the same Warhammer that I'm thinking of, fiddly little figurines that take hours to paint and rulers and stuff?
It's a tabletop RPG, where each person takes a single character and you all sit and basically tell a story. More like White Wolf, D&D, or S.L.A. Industries... -
Ah but Mr Cyn-1-CCC,
I think you'll find that it was all past tense and therefore the bad old days before the computer was able to stamp out the Commie Mutant Traitors. However as you're clearance is obviously Infra Red (As shown by the colour of your text) do you really think you should be questioning someone of Violet Security Clearance?
I believe the computer may want to discuss your impudence... -
Okay Thorny
Once upon a time, in a land far far away there was a game...
This game was like many other games called "Role Play Games" (or RPG's) where people would sit around a table with dice and pads and pencils, lots of junk food, and lots of booze telling stories.
This RPG was different from the others however... It was funny! It was set in the future where an all powerful computer ruled everything, and everyone answered to the computer. The computer was a bit like 1984's "Big Brother", watching everyone, controlling everyone and everything. The people of this world were happy with this. The Computer was able to tell if you needed food, and would supply it, if you were tired it would send you to bed, if you were bored it would entertain you. Some people did not feel this was a good thing though, and they formed Secret Societies to try to overthrow the Computer. Others felt that people didn't follow the Computer zealously enough, so they formed Secret Societies to worship the Computer, and in time these Secret Societies grew, and more appeared, each with different beliefs. Of course this meant that the Computer didn't control EVERY aspect of people's lives and so to be a member of a Secret Society was treason.
The Computer also worked out a way to get rid of that awful messy procreation problem too, and was able to clone people in vats. It created 6 clones for each person so that there were spares. The problem with the cloning process was that sometimes it would create mutations, some of these mutations meant that people were able to control electricity, or the minds of other people, or move things without touching them. Again, this meant that the Utopia that the Computer had designed was flawed, and something that it couldn't control was out in the world. To be a mutant was also treason.
Then there were the "Commies", what can be said about them other than they are hated by the Computer?
To fight this the Computer selected some of the "best" and the "brightest" to be Troubleshooters. The Troubleshooters went around the world dealing with problems on behalf of the Computer. It also created security levels that were colour coded. The corridors and rooms of the city were also colour coded, and you could only use a corridor of your colour code or below. To use a corridor, or room, or tool, of a higher security clearance was... guess what? Treason!
You are a Troubleshooter working on behalf of the Computer. Your job is to weed out Commie Mutant Traitors and hand them to the Computer. The only problem is... You're a mutant, and the computer doesn't know about that Secret Society you belong to, and you're sure that the other Troubleshooters you've been sent out with are Commie Mutant Traitors, but how do you prove it? If you show that you know about Secret Societies, but your security level shows that you shouldn't then you'll be incriminating yourself. If you recognise a mutant power, how would you know?
You need to investigate, but take your time, make sure that you have good evidence because the Computer will know. Don't be too slow though, because you can be sure that the rest of your team are watching you too!
And remember - The Computer Is Your Friend! -
Conga Rats Master Z!
And thanks for all the (indirect) help you've given me with your fantastic guides and binds - never let anyone tell you they're a waste of time! -
After playing in Siren's the past couple of nights it would be really useful for PvP...
Personally I say - good thing (any bit of love they give us is better than a nerf!) -
Lib-R Tee - Registered Mutant and worker in R&D here to prove to the computer that I can overcome the obvious faults of my cloning. (Not that they are the computer's fault of course - it was obviously my DNA and a not very succesful attempt by some Evil Mutant Commie dissedent Secret Organisation that the computer has terminated - All Hail The Computer - Giver Of Life!)
-
Well, I said it in the db Forums and I'll say it here...
You're going to be missed. You're a great leader and I know whatever you decide to do you'll be great at it.
Do keep in touch, even if it's just once every 6 months or so, and again I say, I'll keep a seat warm if you decide you want to get to level 50!
Miss ya already hon -

And personally I find the word "squid" funnier that "octopus", and as I play CoX to have fun I'll stick with squid... (Plus, if it winds people up then all the better! - I am a Villain you know!)
