well that all depends, which part? Some of it is speculation and word of mouth, and some of it is common sense (I think)

as far as the graphics upgrade goes, it makes sense, being as how the CoV has a higher performance/graphic requirement than CoH, so merging the two may necessitate making CoH equal with CoV. But this is only from word of mouth; until HeroCon we won't know for sure.

the part about the devs is the mix of common sense and opinion. If a large enough majority of the game populous (ex, the people who want their voice to be heard on the forums) request a particular thing to be done in game, it would make sense for the devs to at least consider it if it's within reason. why? because it would make/keep the masses happy. So for example, if enough people requested say, a bo staff or nunchakus or something along those lines for a new melee set, it would probably be considered and put on the proverbial list of "things to do" if enough people requested it and it was doable. When some time was freed up during/after their current schedule/plans for future issues, they might get around to toying with it.

Granted that it took a while, power customization happened(requested for years). Going Rogue is on the horizon and the idea of switching sides has been on the forums before. The same thing goes for dual pistols and a new mastermind set(demons in this case)

but like I said on my last post on this thread, my searchfu sucks and all my forum info came from before the forum upgrade, so I doubt that I'd be able to find the links related to this.

What I'd like to see, besides the typical requests for higher rendering rates with higher tessellation/polygon counts is better support for physics-influenced behavior: moving hair, flowing capes/cloaks/skirts, better destructible environment support. Basically better interactive immersion with the overall environment.
Well to be honest I was going off an old post from before the forum makeover, and my searchfu sucks, so my finding it is very unlikely. But I distinctly remember BaBs saying that it was damn near impossible/ would take up waaaayyyyy too much time to code unless there was some major change to make it easier. It was a quality of life thing that people had wanted for years, but the devs prioritized the issues/powerset proliferations/game content because (again, based on what I remember from the old most) they felt it wouldn't be an efficient use of their time back then.

After you grind your way to 50, you can play the new material we've added in this box!"
haha, yeah, that was obviously pre-AE. The "AE babies" got 50's really quick with the constant farming going on. Now I know that the normal vets used AE to farm for a bit to test out new characters outside of the test server.(Kind of think that's ok, because after having made the first few 50's legit, they've almost earned the right to level a bit faster) but the AE babies were people who joined the game under the "I can level up stupidly fast in CoX!" and I couldn't help but laugh when they asked ridiculous questions like "how do I get to steel canyon?" or some equally simple place to get to.

So if any of the Ae babies are still around after not being able to go from 1-50 in 2-3 days, then there should be a much larger amount of accounts with 50's. Even so, you're right, they'll have a really hard time selling going rogue if they limit the content to end-game levels and newbie characters.
  4. To OneAboveAll:

I highly doubt that we will be restricted to carrying only 50's over for a couple reasons.

    1. you're assuming that this is an expansion in the sense of WoW or any other game with a "paid for" expansion. There is no reason that I can see that restricts the majority of the content to the end of the level spectrum, as there isn't an increase in level cap as far as we know.

    2. Being as how there will be starter areas for new characters, your theory would limit the new content to those who "give in and make a new character" or take over a 50, leaving all others out of luck.

    3. Where would this leave characters sitting at or near 35? considering that the exp equivalent of levels 1-35 and 36-50 is about the same, a character would litterally have to grind the rest of the way up before trying out the new content they purchased, or let all 35 levels be in vain and reroll the character at level 1 just to experience Going Rogue. As far as we know, there is no level cap increase, so it's not logical to assume that all the areas will be level restricted.

No one is saying that you wouldn't have to "play the game first" because technically you've already got a taste of the game if you've gotten a character to 20+. (you're also forgetting that the majority of the players are vets of some measure, so technically the ratio of vets to newbs is very much in favor of the vets)

and as far as the hero epics and patron epics goes, read the OP and read my thoughts on it. it's likely that the villains who switch prior to doing the villain epic arcs and go full hero will automatically gain access to them. but we won't know for sure until someone asks about it at HeroCon.

Well, there is a thread I started with questions to specifically ask the devs at HeroCon, and the graphics question is among them. So as long as a few people bring that list with them, the majority of questions we'll have will be answered, even if the GR teaser doesn't
  6. Yeah, for the most part, cell shading does suck, but there are a few games out there that have managed to make it look good to the point where it's not really an issue. and flowing hair would be pretty cool; hell, even wind in general would be cool. Something to send your hair/cape/auras to wave/flicker would be a nice addition. (instead of it just being when you're moving)

From what I've been told however, with the release of Going Rogue, Heroes will be "upgraded" to the requirements of Villains. (Heroes currently has half the requirements of Villains) Nothing has been said for certain though, but I don't even see much more than that coming into the picture.

The engine for CoX is actually pretty old, much older and harder to work with than say the Champions Online engine(as far as I'm told anyways) So that means that there are certain built in limitations, so for example the highly coveted "power customization" was something that was asked for for years. It wasn't possible until they created a work around for it(allegedly anyways) So adding something that we might think of as simple/not that hard like flowing hair might actually be a b*$@h and a half to do.

Then there's also what has priority to consider. Do you imagine the general game populous would prefer new powersets, or flowing hair? or new zones/TFs, or flowing hair? The devs take into account what they want to see happen, what we want to see the most, and what can be done in a reasonable amount of time and find a balance between the 3. That doesn't mean that flowing hair won't ever happen, just it'll likely be a while depending on where it falls on the devs list of "things to do".

I wasn't aware of a new archetype, not that I'd be complaining if there was a new one to play with. just picture a spy either being like a stalker or having the stealth ability with primarily ranged attacks. something along the lines of an assassin using a rifle to pick off enemies from afar.

Also, a side note, gotta love having a redname post by the second page of the thread Apparantly this was enough to warrant dev attention
  9. docbuzzard: that's an excellent question. I would imagine that we would get extra character slots, just not sure of how many and if the character cap per server will be raised. Adding to Main post

Clave_Dark_5: From what an SG mate told me, heroes is supposedly getting a graphics upgrade to match villains. another great question for the list.

Techbot Alpha: I seriously doubt that we'll get a 6th costume slot. I can imagine the devs being like, "You can't possibly need 6 costume slots, 5 should suffice." But I will add it given that we could already have all 5 filled and want another "villain/hero" costume to add.

Dr_Mechano: Something tells me that it's a bit too much to ask for to chance the dynamic of how the TFs/SFs work just because you've gotten the badge for wiping the floor with the person giving it. Couldn't hurt to ask though, I definately like the idea though

corridor: I figured that was the reasoning behind asking about Dual Pistols for defenders, but when you think about it, they already have so much, that making them wait for another proliferation makes sense. Otherwise they'd probably have to make a new powerset just to give them something when the next proliferation comes around. Realistically though it's just a matter of changing around the order of the powers and the values for each one. Will add it though.

Socorro and Ollin: Wasn't aware of the tentonhammer interview mentioning making our 50s stronger, will add a set of related questions.

So far I'm loving the additions to the list, keep them coming everyone

I would assume the former but hope for the latter!

    Question #2
Socialization space. Heroes have Atlas Park as a centralized easy to access place to socialize and see and be seen. Villains really don't have anything like this, mores the pity.

Will Praetoria have a nice convenient location for this? Assuming Praetoria is accessible for both heroes and villains will there be a nice spot for us all to hang out and hold CC's :P

    Question #3
Will Defenders get access to Dual Pistols?

    1. my guess would be that there will be a large area like cimerora as the main area, with others surrounding it. but good question, definately will add.

    2. Atlas park is big, yes, and also provides alot of open space. Heroes also has that brighter atmosphere and over all less crowded feel to it, but atlas was chosen by the players as far as I know. And the villain population pales in comparrison to heroes, so short of the CC that my friend ran recently on redside, I haven't seen or heard of any in a while. Not to mention that the things on villains are kind of expensive because of that :/ odds are that there will be a spot the players choose for the "spot to be" in praetoria.

    3. From what I understand (which may or may not be much) Blasters (and maybe corruptors) will gain access to Dual Pistols with GR. Nothing has been mentioned of defenders getting it, so if nothing else it will be in a proliferation sometime after GR goes live.
  11. Jetpack has a good point, the leveling pacts will likely be affected if one toon were to switch sides while the other stayed. This never came to mind because I've never used the leveling pact before. I'll definately add this point to the list

and Blpup has a good point. Considering that up until now, the majority of what we've gotten from the devs has been powerset proliferation, and that i16 included that as well as the electric armor changes, it's highly unlikely that there will be more in the sense of "new" powersets. Demon Summoning for Masterminds and Dual Pistols for Blasters/Corruptors is all I can see from them, given that they've actually let us know about those months ago. but for the sake of asking the question, I will add the general question of "any new powersets/proliferations we can look forward to?" in the original post.
  12. This is my effort to make a compiled list of questions to ask the devs at HeroCon. This being not only because I cannot attend (I'm on the east coast), but there hasn't been a current list from what I've seen that addresses all the questions one may have concerning GR. Most threads concern certain aspects of the change, like SGs or influence, ease of transfer, etc. These are mostly personal questions that I believe hold much weight, so here goes:

    1. What happens when a hero or villain(namely the villans in this case, as they litterally don't have their epic powerset handed to them, they have to do missions to get them, and the powers are directly from one of their villain patrons) goes to the other side without having reached the point of 41 to get their epics? Will villains get new hero epics instead, or will they automatically get access to the villain epics when they hit 41? How will this affect normal gameplay or PvP if there's suddenly a stalker with hero epics or a tanker with mako epics(or something that might be considered unbalancing)?

    2. Will there be any AT's (the epic ones in particular) that will not be able to transfer from one side to the other?

    3. How will characters "transfer" their currency? Will they be able to do so at all? If not, do they have to give it away or transfer it to another one of their toons?

    4. Will a character be able to be a "double agent" and ride the grey line? or will they ultimately have to quit/be kicked from their old SG on the other side?

    5. Will the markets be merged to prevent long term exploitation of individuals intent on hopping from one side to the other? (ex. savy market exploiters and the real money traders)

    6. What is to become of the "Clockwork w/Pad" glove that Sexy J accidentally leaked out on test? Will the devs finally give us some of the enemy group unique costume pieces for defeating enough of them instead of limiting it to their weapons? http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=189791

    7. What if any bonuses will be coming with Going Rogue and/or it's collector's edition?

    8. and of course, What it the approximate date for Going Rogue's release? (as to my knowledge it is still unavailable for preorder at Gamestop)

    9. What is to become of the leveling pacts we have established if one toon "Goes Rogue"?

    10. Are there any other powersets/proliferations in the works aside from Demon Summoning and Dual Pistols? And who exactly will be getting Dual Pistols? (obviously blasters, but what about corruptors and defenders?)

    11. Just how big is Praetoria? How many new zones can we expect on/soon after the launch of Going Rogue?

    12. Will there be additional character slots given with Going Rogue? Also, will the character limit be raised accordingly for each server?

    13. Rumors of a graphics upgrade with GR for heroes(to match the requirements of villains) have been going around, is this true?

    14. Will there be a 6th costume slot available with Going Rogue to make an "opposing side" costume? or will we have to sacrifice one of our current 5 if we want to make one?

    15. Will past badges affect dialogue for characters who change sides? Will this alter the missions from them in anyway? (ex. having the LRSF completed, will Statesman have an alternate dialogue when speaking to you, considering you have wiped the floor with him in the past)

    16. Regarding Posi's interview on TenTonHammer, what exactly will allow us to make our level 50's even stronger? new recipes? new accolades? or the ever doubtful increase in level cap? http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/74507

    17. Given that the UK does not have their own dedicated team and a scarce population, will their servers be merged with the US servers for Going Rogue or sometime in the near future? And on that note, will any of the US servers be merged? (Referring to that day when Guardian was the only server taken down for maintainance/testing)

    18. Are there any new additions to base editing? And will base raids be making a come back anytime soon?

    19. What will characters deciding to permanantly ride that grey line have available/unavaliable to them? Like if the "greys" can go between all three zones, is all they'll miss out on the redside/blueside exclusive missions?

    20. Will character's be able to acquire all accolades from both sides? and will they all count on one side, or will they switch after changing sides? If so, how will this apply to those "grey characters"?

    21. Will SGs get an increase in size with Going Rogue beyond the current 100 members?

    My speculations:

    1. Heroes and Villains will likely be limited to their own unique epic pools, which will end up giving the villains their "patron epics" at 41 regardless if they've done the missions for them on redside.

    2. All ATs will be able to transfer, namely the epics

    3. The currency of a given side will be frozen until such a time when that character goes back to their original side, or there will be a transfer system akin to WoW's goblins and having a bookie charge a steep fee to transfer influence to infamy and vice versa.

    4. No real stand on this issue, could go either way. Would be nice to be able to go between sides, even if there's a series of missions or a task force to do to swap.

    5. yes, the markets will be merged to prevent the exploitation of the market.

    6. the mysterious costume piece will be part of a number of pieces related to that set, to be gained by defeating enough of said enemies. OR gained by purchasing Going Rogue. OR by spending unique currency/merits from praetoria.

    7. Something in the realm of a free month as is typical of previous game editions, possibly a new costume set(just as the good vs. evil edition had the justice/sinister sets), or maybe a powerpack voucher for one of the origin booster packs.

    8. My honest guess is sometime in January or February. The reasoning behind this is that accounts to receive the beta keys for being active from August 15th to November 15th won't be given out until at least the 15th of Nov. figure a few weeks after those keys are given out for closed beta. A couple/few more weeks after that of open beta to stress test the build. more time to finalize the build and mass print it to the cds, and shipping it out for sale.

    9. The leveling pacts will either be suspended like the influence/infamy will if one swaps sides (and there is no other way to transfer or convert the currency) OR the pacts will be canceled all together either upon "Going Rogue" or after a certain period of time spent on the opposing side.

    10. Considering how nice Demon Summoning and Dual Pistols are going to be, and that we just got a powerset proliferation with i16(including the change to electric armor) It is unlikely that we will be getting any other "goodies" as far as powersets go. To ask for/expect anything more is just stingy.

    11. Praetoria will be bigger than cimerora, and possibly equal in length/width as independance port. At least 4 new zones will be added, to sufficiently cover the level ranges and had that new starting area Posi mentioned in in interview (see question 16 for link)

    12. We will be given 1-2 new character slots and the server limits will be increased to accomodate. After all there are people who love their given servers but have already bought all the slots they can(and earned the others) and don't have any space left. It would keep the masses happy I'm sure.

    13. Heroes will recieve the graphical upgrade, as the villains migrating to heroes are based on the higher settings (I think?)

    14. No opinion, would enjoy the 6th costume slot, but won't cry foul if we don't get it

    15. Depending on how in depth they go into the new dialogue, if a villain TF leader talks to statesman after whooping him in the past, there may be some alternative dialogue. May also depend on your allignment at the time.

    16. I predict new accolades and a few new enhancement sets. I don't think they'll ever raise the level cap. Imagine the uproar of those who have spent billions for purples and to maximise their builds, only to not have the best of the best anymore. People just might march on CoX HQ with torches and pitchforks :P

    17. There will likely be a downsizing of the servers in the near future to maximize efficiency/reduce bandwidth/save money/etc. And the UK servers will likely join the US ones as their forums have already been joined with ours.

    18. absolutely, no idea... kind of feel like the base raiding thing has been thrown on the back-burner

Finally, does anyone have any questions to add or comments to the above mentioned?

My thoughts, GR will inevitably cause an normalisation of pricing between the markets if not an outright market merge. (yes please to the latter)

Depending upon excatly how much effort is involved in side switching, I can easily see the following occuring.

Take a character and run the GR missions until you are right on the cusp between red and blue. Say you are blue side, take something which is pretty cheap here, say pet sets. Buy a whole bunch of them, run the one mission to tip you over the edge, then sell to redside.

Then being 'just' red it should be relatively easy to run back up to the cusp. Buy something thats cheap red and more expensive blue (IM thinking luck charm would be an easy example), then run that final mission to bring you back to blue.

There are obvious ways to limit this, Say there are 10 'rogue' points to go from one side to the other (1-5 red 6-10 blue), what you do is instead of putting a new villain at 5 that last mission puts you all the way to 1. Puts a barrier there to some degree, but that just slows the process it doesn't eliminate it.

To go all chemical analogy on folks, the disparity between the markets is an enthalpy difference, it will drive a reaction (item transfer) forward. The difficulty of the side-switch is the activation energy required, make it high enough and only a small portion of players will be motivated enough to transfer items. (The reaction is energetically favorable, but kinetically slow without an external stimulus think burning/oxidation of wood)

If its low enough, there will be a flood of the items, and that will quickly work to normalise the differences, leading to a defacto merged market anyway.

Gamers being what they are, someone will quickly find a way to minimise the effort (activation energy) required, which is akin to catalysis.

As a 60 month vet, a loyalty program member and sight unseen a GR pre-orderer I know I'll be in the beta at somepoint. I'll be paying VERY close attention to the effect on GR on the markets, as well as all the other testing I would normally do.
I actually posted in another thread about this, granted it was briefly. What I personally see happening is a merge of the markets, specifically to prevent the long term reprocussions of leaving them separate. Players are smart enough to know that there will be a way to exploit this (ex, buying the celerity +stealth procs on blueside and turn "evil" and sell it on redside) The real money traders already had a field day with AE (in case you're curious, the prices pre AE for a billion was about $100. Pre AE death as a means of farming, it was like $26) This will only give them a new "AE" to exploit as they flood the markets and increase their own stockpile with the intent to make real money off it.

Merging the markets, while there will be a large change to get used to in the beginning and it will be exploitable for a time, the prices will eventually balance out and any long term damage to the already crippled/recovering in-game economy will be avoided.

As far as the influence/infamy issue goes, it was correct when someone(forgive me for not specifying who) said that the official explaination for the in-game currency not being likened to gold is a joke. it's a currency, you buy things with it, it has in-game value; hence, it's money/gold. I can definately see the currency being "frozen" for the duration of your being on the other side, but what makes more sense to me would be what WoW has going for it. (put down the torches and pitchforks and let me explain :P)

In an effort to reduce the purchasing of gold for the game using the real money traders (as far as I know this was the reason) The goblins of WoW became the bookies/money transferers from one side to the other. Have an alliance character that you want to trade money to on a character on the horde? ok, you'll take a 30% hit to the amount you want to transfer, but at least it's something, right?

So I can definately see the implementation of a system similar to this, if for no other reason but to keep the players happy(by not having them start off on the other side with zilch) and to keep the real money traders from capitolizing on the situation GR is going to bring.

agreed. it would definately be a hastle if you had to quit and rejoin SGs every time you switched. The devs would be pressuring us to choose a side and to stick with it if you lost your SG position and prestige earned every time you jumped from red to blue side and vice versa.

Call me crazy, but I am hoping for alot with GR, and the lack of information has kind of let my mind run wild with possibilities and what I think would work out best. Just have to wait for those going to HeroCon to spread the wealth of information after it gets out

EDIT: Also, instead of reposting for another question that has come up be I just remembered. It's a pretty good one

What happens when a hero or villain(namely the villans in this case, as they litterally don't have their epic powerset handed to them, they have to do missions to get them, and the powers are directly from one of their villain patrons) goes to the other side without having reached the point of 41 to get their epics? How will this affect normal gameplay or PvP if there's suddenly a stalker with hero epics or a tanker with mako epics(or something that might be considered unbalancing)?
  15. ChaosExMachina brings up a few other good points of concern that have been questioned by the members of my SG, I had forgotten to mention them. Those being the "restarting at level 1", which AT's will/will not be able to switch (namely the epic ATs), and only "new characters" will be able to enter GR.

IMO, all of these are unlikely, as the whole lure to GR is being able to take a character you've already built up (ex, a decked out stalker) and take it to the other side (to give the villains a taste of their own medicine in RV). Am I wrong in assuming this?

So making a new character and making say a mastermind on blue side from level 1 when you already have the one you want at 50 would mean playing the same character over again. I don't think anyone wants to do that.

And if they limit the epic ATs to their current respective sides, it would really limit the story aspect of the game. What's to say that a SoA wouldn't get tired of following Lord Recluse's orders and the "Destined One" plot line, and of robbing banks? Maybe he would like to take his services(and his spider pack) to paragon city for a change of pace/heart to help people or even to get back at Arachnos?

As soon as you "zone out" back to Paragon or whatever, everything is back to normal as the events of the parallel univerase are unknown in the default universe.

Just a personal theory based on my own interprtation of the facts.
In all honesty, in the terms of what's supposedly being done with Going Rogue, that can't be right. The main reason being that it's not really letting you switch sides. If the only area that you could go from good to bad and vice versa was in praetoria, then it's not worth paying for plain and simple. If that were the case it would be like any other issue, only it would emphasize the other side a little bit more.

Regardless of the amount of content, if at the end of the day the only thing that changed was a standing in praetoria, it would be akin to RWZ or Cimerora where you can be among the other side and work with each other thing(where the actions of either side do not affect their allignment).

If that were to truly be the fate of Going Rogue, you can take me off the sign-up sheet right now, and I'll cancel my subscription too. i16 was a great quality of life issue, but without new content in the lines of extensive story additions, new zones and powersets, and the switching sides that GR is said to offer, my interest in CoX will definately die off after GR goes live.
  17. Personally I've talked these things out in depth with some of the members of Dream Team (my current SG on Guardian Server - perhaps you've heard of us :P) and we've basically come out with a number of things we'd like to see, as well as what is likely to happen.

Obvious conflicts: 1. influence/infamy, 2. super group membership and how often you can switch sides, 3. auction house/black market, (more detail below)

    1. as far as influence and infamy goes, it's a pretty complicated issue. How will characters "transfer" their currency? Will they be able to do so at all? If not, do they have to give it away or transfer it to another one of their toons?
    * the likely course will be something along the lines of what WoW has with the aliance/hoarde gold system transfer. just like with the goblins in WoW, there will likely be some shady mafia/bookie types in the game that will transfer your in-game currency for a fee or percentage. While the fee may be steep, it's better than nothing.

    2. super group membership is the main topic of this thread, and can go one of 2 ways, and it all depends on how often you can switch back and forth.
    * If they truly are aiming for that "riding the grey line" thing, they would have to come up with a way to litterally be a double agent and be able to maintain a hero SG and a villain SG. Now it's unlikely that it will be as simple as the click of a button, but something along the lines of a taskforce would be acceptable/logical. It's rather unreasonable to make the decision absolute and final, as it would get rid of that grey area all together and would upset many if they regretted their decision to switch sides. the other unlikely option is to make the switch final, where the need to disolve all ties to one's old SG is a necessity.

    3. finally there's the auction house/black market issue.
    * There is undoubtedly going to be a flux of recipes and salvage going from one side to the other with the intent to make a killing on the market (for example, heros loading up on celerity +stealth procs and going to villains where it's value is much, much higher). The only way we can see this being fixed is for the markets to be merged somehow. Granted that the prices will eventually balance out somewhere inbetween the lower prices of one side and the higher prices of the other, but the end result will allow both sides to have equal access to what is for sale without allowing anyone to take advantage of the current going prices.

any and all criticism on the above mentioned is welcome, and your opinions on what may come to pass is encouraged

I'd like to finish by saying that it's rather annoying to have received absolutely no official news on Going Rogue beyond the initial posting sometime in May. The website has had no changes or updates since it's creation, and the character profile of Tyrant has said "coming soon" for 5 months now. To throw us a bone every once in a while wouldn't be so bad, right?
  18. the funny thing is that Windows 7 is more or less a dumbed down version of vista. like they gutted all the useless crap that they felt "should have been" added alla Windows Vista.

something was clearly wrong with it when noone wanted to buy a new machine because of vista, or upgrade their machine to it.

add to this the fact that the OS in general is a memory [censored] that wants 2gb of ram to run ITSELF, it means that only higher end machines can run it decently. others would have to upgrade their machines.

another kick to the balls is that Microsoft will soon be cutting off support to Windows XP...kind of an incentive to buy vista or 7. *this is insider info from my father who works with computers for a living; I'll try to find an article to back this claim up*

    - Scimitars for Dual Blades(as the current "scimitars" for dual blades are actually "Shamshirs". but make them look less like the aladdin sword that broadsword has, maybe like a mix of the current DB scimitars and the BS arabian scimitar?)
