Dark,
Hopefully we will be running for a while so if you don't get home too late stop by.
WN -
Today's the day! Hope to see you there.
WN -
Looking at your review it is clear that many of your problems with the story stem from not knowing the history it is based on. I hope after you read this you will go back and consider rerating it as will the rest of your team..
Let me explain some of your concerns..
[ QUOTE ]
um. Crey? Crey was only established in the 90s. I wonder if they time-traveled.
[/ QUOTE ]
It is clear that Disco hired them and he came back in time, So they easily could have come with him. People are often slammed for spoon feeding these sorts of details and I felt it did not require an additional explanation.
[ QUOTE ]
A forest. Why am I in a forest? Wasnt Disco Demolition Night in Chicago? If this is supposed to be a park or something, you ought to say so.
[/ QUOTE ]
The Disco Demolition took place at Comesky Park in Chicago. It is an outdoor stadium and that map was the closest available.
[ QUOTE ]
My main problem with the storyline is that there wasnt enough of it. I was expecting a final showdown in THE HALLS OF ROCK-ock-ock or something, and maybe a little buildup to stopping the one fateful night as well.
[/ QUOTE ]
See above, the Disco Demolition was an HISTORICAL event.
[ QUOTE ]
The location for that mission also feels off - maybe call it rioting spilling over into the streets and Disco fighting back, and put it on a KR map.
[/ QUOTE ]
Again, most of the negative stuff is coming for the fact you did not know this was an historical event. As for President Carter, I get more Great job on Carter than most anything else character design wise. Not having lived through that time yourself, the portrayal of Carter may not resonate with you.
[ QUOTE ]
Part of my problem with the design is actually that the powers for the Disco Nation dont flow at all from the enemy descriptions.
[/ QUOTE ]
Ok, not all the powerset are directly tied to the descriptions/names of the NPCs, but there are reasons for the powersets. For example, duel blades features many dance like moves which fit the theme. The Dancing Queen throws ice (as is Cold as Ice, though if you missed the other Disco and Rock references, I am sure that does not make sense either).
In summary, it is clear that most of the references, quotes, humor and the history were not understood. This is clearly a culture/age thing and if the story was based on todays music or country music it would almost all go over my head too, That would not however make it a bad story, just one that is not for me.
I sincerely feel the arc was judged unfairly because of your lack of knowledge with the subject matter. It is one thing if the arc was truly problematic, but totally another when the ratings were based on incorrect assumptions.
WN
P.S. - You had three of my arcs to choose from to review. I would be curious as to why you picked the only one with a subject that you have no interest/investment in? -
I will try to make it though it seems unlikely atm.
WN -
I would be happy with you reviewing any of my arcs in my sig. Trademark is a one shot, Disco is a two shot (my fave) and Blappy is a four parter.
WN -
Tweaking one or two of them. I also plan to do a new one though I am tossed up on if it should be a sequel or a totally new everything.
WN -
Just bumping this up as a reminder.
WN -
The problem with that is that shorter arcs are more vulnerable and one mission arcs remain in the same boat as everyone is now.
WN -
What I would like to see is a system in place where every X weeks/days the highest and lowest rating on an arc are thrown out. That is barring a total redo of the system to 10 stars or best of all 30 stars (3 categories).
WN -
I knew a person who had a 3+ year character genericized and he was able to escalate the issue to a manager and eventually get his name restored. Most of the admins will lean on the side of being overly cautious.
WN -
Really sorry to see you go Smoke. Fingers crossed you and others will see your way back in the future.

[ QUOTE ]
Has this been republished under a new Arc ID number, WN?
Eco.
[/ QUOTE ]
No, it is still arc 2019. I just did a search and it came up fine.
WN -
I just look in the four star section for one that sounds good. Many, many people do not use the tags or even know about them.
WN -
Tahlana,
Thanks for recommending one of my arcs! Nice to know people are playing and enjoying them.

Death to Disco!: Entertaining story/silly arc, a little on the short side, but with plenty of humorous comments/in-jokes from both genres. It The final boss could have been bumped up a little in difficulty for a more climactic feel, but it's also an arc worth repeating.
[/ QUOTE ]
Thanks for playing it! It was fun listening as you played.
As for the boss not being tough enough, you clearly ran it on Heroic. The way the MA works it bumps everything down a level if you set to that low. So a Boss turns into a Lt.. That is just how MA works. You want Bosses set above Heroic. Believe me, I run on Rugged (Level 3) and he is PLENTY tough.
WN
P.S. - You forgot to rate the arc in MA. -
Well, I will certainly have to throw out:
Name: Death to Disco!
Arc ID: 84420
Creator Global Name: @Wrong Number
Difficulty Level: Medium
Synopsis: It's 2009; Dr. Disco Fever has somehow altered the timeline so that Disco never died. The Star Spangled Banner is played to a Disco beat! Sporting events start with people standing up and "getting down" for our national anthem. Restore the timeline or be stuck Boogie Oggie-ing forever!
Number of EB/AVS 0
Story Type - Humor
Mission Count: 2
Estimated Time to Play: about 30 minutes

As I said, time travel is a plot device that never solves more problems than it causes. Just Say No.
[/ QUOTE ]
Does this mean not to submit arcs with any time-travel element because you feel these are bad no matter how well done? If so, I want to change the arc of mine you were going to review. Though mine is humor and not a "save the world" type story at all it does feature time travel.

Well when we only get three slots each, many authors want to make each one count. Personally a single-mission arc feels like a waste of a slot to me. If we didn't have that limitation then I would make some short ones as well.
[/ QUOTE ]
I actually think it is as hard to make a good, tight, fun short arc as it is a longer one.
I made a four parter that was my first arc that I made during open beta (it has changed a lot since then), What pretty quickly became apparent was that many players often do not want to invest the time into longer arcs. So, I made a one mission arc and it ended up being one of just two arcs to hit Hall of Fame on test. It was just easier to get people to invest 15 minutes and I found it did help in getting my longer arc played. So, shorter arcs, can be beneficial and for me at least it is satisfying to get your arc played no matter the length.

Aquarius: Your role as a trendsetter is put into turmoil. Your best chance at getting back on track is to play Death to Disco! (84420) to set things straight.
Or
Pisces: You are use to struggling with two paths, but three could put you in over your head. Best to stop a third path from forming by playing Death to Disco! (84420). -
If it was going to be a promotion event it would be advertised as such and not as an official P.E.R.C. event. Thanks for your support.
