  1. While most of your complaints hold water and I'd love to see more MMOs break the mold (although, most MMOs that come out now do break the mold in some way. theyre not a complete 180, because anything too far from the mold doesn't sell)

actually...no..that's it. the reason there aren't too many INNOVATIVE and "FUN" mmos is because "people" don't want those. you may think gamers are desperate for an oasis of innovation in a sea of grinding for loot, but people like doing that.

I mean, we live in a world where the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises not only coexist with equal huge fanbases, but release a new copy of the game every year that's always the most sold game of the year, every year.

But that aside, the one thing that sticks out

Because if things weren't balanced then everyone would play the strongest class or whatever system you're running. You need balance so people run every class equally, or that people aren't punished for picking a ****** underperforming class.

heres looking at you electric blast
  2. Earth Doms. Lock-down, mitigation, slows. Giant hammers. It was the only powerset I got to 50 because I found it so fun. Nothing like casting earthquake in a large group and watching them flail about.

And I haven't found a game with an RP community like CoH's yet.
  3. A loot based fantasy mmo with dungeons turning into a gear grinder?

    say it isnt so!

As I go into a bit more in a post in the "where CoH went wrong" thread, several things about the combat in this game ended up encouraging a frantic, steamroller style of combat. Even the roleplayers I pretty much always teamed with fell victim to this, too. For the sort of RP'er who tended to just hang out in social hubs, no big deal, but for "RP on the fly" types like me (and you, it seems), stopping to type out some dialogue or a pose meant being at least one combat behind, scrambling frantically to catch up. Tab targeting may not have been a contributor to that (although I think that's open to argument), but it sure didn't prevent it.

As a contrast, there was usually plenty of time for on-the-fly RP in Fallen Earth (which was my Holy Grail: an MMO with reticule targeting combat). This was in no small part because the combat was simply more dangerous than it is in CoH. Unless you were cherrypicking in a lower-level zone or on a full-size, very good team, steamrolling just didn't happen. Because actual patient tactics like taking cover and breaking line-of-sight work with real targeting, there was often even time to get a few quips and comments in in PvP. Try that in a tab targeting game!

Well yeah, and a lot of what you are talking about is incarnate stuff like Judgement and Destiny. Which broke the slowerpaced flow of combat completely. And are not entirely part of the system.
  5. To throw CoH a bone though, the slow pace of powers certainly made them feel...meaty. Like they actually had force behind them.

Neither CO or DCUO's quick based combat feels like you're actually hitting the enemy, just whittling down their HP bar.

Somewhere there's a compromise. Either CoH's stamina bar and cool downs needed to be minimized to the point where they don't interfere with pacing, or CO/DCUO's power effects need to be reworked to where they feel like theyre actually hitting the targets.
  6. Honestly, I prefer tab targeting as it gives a lot more laxed gameplay which allows me to RP easier. Which I know is a secondary point to the game, but you know, **** you guys. After seeing so many MMOs either make it nearly impossible to type while fighting, or just getting rid of chat bubbles (or entire systems) altogether, CoH was the ******* holy grail.

Tab targeting aside I still didn't like the combat. It was always a second string activity and just used it as a vehicle for RP.

I've never seen a game so adamant at ruining the feeling that it was supposed to portray. Both the stamina gauge and lengthy cooldown for powers did everything they could to make you feel unsuper as possible.

I mean, I've never seen Superman have to stop mid fight to let his blue bar recharge.

Or the flash punch someone and then stand there for a couple seconds going "wait, my punch is recharging"
  7. Wow, that outfit really makes me want to make a "Great Hunt" villain after the most dangerous game (heroes)

Now I'm sad I'll never get to make it happen.
  8. Count Seismecca in.

If the universe ends how is she supposed to harass heroes?

Not really, since you're a mutation, a non-standard human that's one in a million from the "natural" humans. Now, if every human could throw fire then you would be natural.

Origins are pretty easy once you start thinking in "what does my character actively use"

A mutant gorilla that actively uses tech guns would be tech etc etc

and the difference between science and tech is whether or not you can take it off, or how deep its ingrained in you.

But, like Elec said, origins should mean **** gameplay wise, but just having the choice is something fun to make (you wouldn't believe how bland CO feels without them), and I enjoyed the origin starter missions.

It takes a right balance to make a good RPvp fight. Sure, there are those who take it too seriously. And those people ruin it. But if you can find a good group to fight against or with, using PvP to rp is pretty fun.

The way I (and the VG I was in) liked to do it is the match outcome never mattered as much as the story outcome. The victor was whichever outcome made the most interesting story.

The actual pvp battles were just us running around shooting powers at eachother while making witty quips and spouting catchphrases.

Of course, the hero group we fought against didn't quite understand the whole "give and take" part of RPing with other people so they eventually just went turtle and never left their base

I mean, I guess sitting inside and patting yourself on the back is cool too

    wait...what were we talking about?

  17. Speaking of origins, I'd like a make well on the promise that each origin would have a unique (but equal) leveling path.

Mutants and naturals would have to train specific skills to unlock them GW2 style

techies would earn money or parts to build better tech to increase their power

magics would earn exp to unlock new spell books......unless they didnt cast spells. would really make sense if they just used magic artifacts....

wait this idea is kind of ****** when you parse it out. I can see why they dropped it.

It will. MMO's always make that mistake.

WoW is the beacon that the cybug MMO's already run towards and fry themselves at the end of each game.

    Firefly

Hopefully with Whedon's popularity directing the Avengers movies we can get it back.

While I know, all too well, that the masses flock to conformity, there's still a large amount of people and gamers that love diversity and the things that CoH were doing. I just feel like enough of those people weren't being reached. It's hard enough to reach those people normally, but evil marketing research protocols make that even harder both if you follow those guidelines and (mostly) because the machinations in place obscure the playing field so much. Customers themselves embrace the categorization of marketing machinations and anything outside of those systems has become akin to outcasts in the dark fringes lost from society...

    Ahem.
    The answer is simple, really

A single fan like you or I (or anyone else in this forum) can see what CoH did and appreciate the risks they took making them, even with the large missteps along the way

While the MMO industry and MMO playerbase will just see the end result. Something that either failed, or never met their expectations.
