    Mea Culpa.

Either way...I'm having Korean BBQ for lunch.

I mean, we have a heal-over-time aura in a way (or "anti-damage" aura) in Pain Domination. (Soothing Aura.) Half wonder, if it required new tech, if he didn't just "reinvent the wheel." (Yes, I'm aware SA is a toggle.)
Speaking from experience as a game dev here, but also just hypothesizing as I know nothing about CoH's code base. Anyway, there is a term in software development called brittle code. This is where, for whatever reason, any attempts to upgrade or alter the code will break it. There are any number of reasons why this can happen, but a common one is when a piece of code is written for a singular specific case or a small set of cases, because the design never allowed for anything else.

Outside of game dev that isn't normally TOO bad. In game dev it can be very, very bad because design can shift so dramatically so quickly. From what I remember, stalking the forums and reading dev posts, there have been quite a few areas of the CoH code base that would probably be described as brittle, things they pine over and say "Man, if we could go back and do that over."

It's possible DoTs are just that. A case where, in early development, someone made the decision that the tech only needed to be used to do damage, ever. On the surface, the design of a HoT says "Take the DoT, reverse the damage." but there could be any number of events, triggers, etc. that need to be hooked in to the tech, and that could be one of the hurdles they had to jump. I have zero doubt in my mind that if they say they had to re-write some of the code, or even add new code to handle HoTs, that they're inflating the problem. I do hope though that in adding the new tech/rewriting the old tech that they did themselves a favor and tried to write malleable code that they can do rad stuff with in the future!

City of Heroes is a very old, very mature code base. Sadly, old and mature doesn't mean stable, efficient, or extensible. It usually means the opposite. The fact they've managed to teach this old dog so many new tricks in the last year or so is an inspiration to me and part of why I keep playing.

Now, excuse me, I need to get off this soap box before I fall down and hurt myself.
  3. I am suddenly delighted that I have Paragon Points waiting to be spent. I'll be that much closer to finishing my expensive build!

Say whaaaaat. I just respecced and need some of that in my build. What are the prices?

I think for something as visible as a gamer tag it's "acceptable" even if it's not a price tag I can REALLY get behind. In a game where I have, though I'm not proud to admit it, about a dozen characters that are at least half way to the level cap I find it harder to justify.

Also, a lower price would make it more of an impulse buy. At $10 I can't justify renaming the one character I REALLY want to rename. At $5 I could, and probably could justify renaming some other toons that I have better names for these days. At $2 I would probably end up renaming half my characters over the course of a month. I don't figure I'm the "average" case though.

Ideally, what I'd like to see, is that the server transfer tokens VIP users get become a general use token that could be redeemed for a server transfer or a rename. That'd be rad and more useful to me.

My mind? Blown. I haven't used any of my transfer tokens and had no plans to, guess I know what I'm using them for now!
  7. Oh, another random thing, less about the featured items and more just a general gripe about pricing. 800 points to rename one character? Yeesh. Seriously, there is no reason this should be this expensive. There should not be enough gears turning, levers being pulled, and springs needing oiled to warrant a $10 price tag for something so small. If there IS a reason, quite frankly you should be ashamed of yourselves. I say that as one game dev to another.

Guess I'll tough out having my main that I haven't played in years stuck with a name I used to like but now kind of don't like as much. It doesn't bug me enough to warrant dropping Hamilton to fix it. it's the one thing bugging me about bringing him out of retirement after all this time to try out the Incaranate stuff.

    BS/Regen Help!

Again guys, I can't thank you enough for all the feed back. I looked over the Katana/Regen thread for a bit earlier, so I've got some ideas of where I want to go. Going to respec and slot as best I can but I don't really have a lot of inf floating around so I'm going to be very budget build and just have to try to grow into it as I work on incarnate stuff.

    BS/Regen Help!

Awesome! Thanks for the feed back guys! I won't be able to put your advice to use tonight(Child's Play charity dinner!) but hopefully tomorrow I can hop on and respec back into having Parry and move some powers around to try to grab Combat Jumping. Then I'll focus on trying to get to villain to get that patron pool. I didn't realize I could still use those if I switched back to blue side.

Another question I thought of is about Incarnate stuff again. I know that the Dark Astoria revamp is supposed to help solos get Incarnate stuff, but is there any way right now to get Incarnate stuff while solo?

    BS/Regen Help!

So after something like a two year sabbatical I've returned to my level 50 BS/Regen Scrapper and I want to start getting into Incarnate stuff. I respecced him without looking at guides or anything and did the story arc to unlock my Alpha slot. The respec and the slot got me some questions going.

First, is Parry worth having at 50? It didn't used to be all that useful, so I specced out of it, has that changed?

Second, is Body Mastery a good choice? I intend to stay hero side with him, so my choices are the epic power pools, is one a better match with Regen? I liked the accuracy toggle but I could probably live without it if there is another pool that gets me good defense or resistance.

Third, what are some good power pool choices? I grabbed Speed so I could get Hasten and Burn Out, and currently respecced into having Fighting for Tough and Weave, and Leadership for the defense and damage toggles(don't remember their names).

Fourth, and last for now, what should I be looking to put into my Alpha slot? I feel like I need more resistance or defense but at the same time the slot only enhances my existing powers so I don't know how much benefit I'll be getting.

I don't have a build made through any tool or anything, will try to get to that later if people want to see what I've got going on presently. It was a lot of fun to settle back into this character so I'm excited to get some feedback on the current state of things so I can have fun with him in trials and stuff.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up on that. They look really rad. Guess I need to start playing my level 50 again and do some Incarnate stuff..
  12. My question is what kind of boots is the demonic axe wielding dude using in the screen shots? I can't find those boots in the character creator and they look awesome..
  13. I think my only issue with the Gunslinger set was that the hair for male body type that associates with the gunslinger hat is terrible. I liked the hat a lot and then I picked it, rotated my guy and was like "WTF is this?" Also, the Navy Colt pistol looks better than all the new guns, which made me sad a second time. Not sure if it made me sad enough to regret the purchase, but still kind of a bummer.
  14. Thanks for the feedback! I'm definitely going to try to sit down some time this week and do a once over on the critters to improve their look!
  15. Oh man, I've wanted art for my villain for forever!!

Dr. Waltz is a former Crey scientist that developed an intrusive program, code named Tyrant, that was to be used to infect and sieze control of robots. The program was installed into a cybernetic organ that Dr. Waltz had implanted in himself. Shortly after the operation, he began exhibiting megalomaniacal traits and began taking control of robots for illegal uses. He was caught and jailed by a hero named Techsupport. After escaping the Zig he took the name Tyrant Protocol and now plans to create a robot nation under his command.

  19. Had a great time. The beer was excellent, food was great, and the cookies? Stellar. I only regret that I didn't randomly talk to more people!

    Also, congrats about the engagement!
  20. Man, I'm getting stoked for this. Looks like a great menu. Can't wait!
  21. Just bought my ticket. Was on the fence since I'm largely a lurker, but decided that it'd be fun and I'd be heading out to get something to eat about that time anyway. Why not pass time in good company? See you all there!
