I'd love to check, but my problem is that the CCC doesn't open anymore. It's a really persistent bug in the ATI driver releases that comes up regularly... first time I had it, but it's REALLY irking me right now, cuz that's exactly what I want to check. ;(

    1. Using the RNG (Random Number Generator) to distribute Incarnate Shards puts them in the hands of undeserving players and can deny the shards to worthy players. Randomness should not be used to determine who obtains Incarnate boosts but should be rewarded to those who succesfully demonstrate mastery of their individual skills.

Individual players need to have their skills tested before being rewarded with something as important as an Incarnate Shard. Using the same type RNG system as is used to determine the pick of real world lottery and slot machine numbers is an insult to the Incarnate System and the Incarnate characters. Skill, not luck, should determine who becomes an Incarnate.

    2. I am concerned about the lazy programming that we seem to be heading towards with the future of the Incarnate System. Indications are that the future holds nothing but Raids involving many players. This means that the programming staff only need to create a couple of new TF's for each Incarnate slot release and throw them out to the user base while letting the RNG determine who gets the good stuff and who doesn't. Skilled players not required.

Look at the new content for Incarnates in issue 19. Two new difficult TF's...and that's it. Let the grind begin as these two TF's (and the others that give Incarnate rewards) are farmed over and over again by every type of PUG that can be assembled. Surely, the programming staff and management of this game can do better than that to weed out those deserving to be Incarnates from those not so worthy.

    3. The Incarnate System should be totally skill based throughout. There are multiple ways this could be implemented but I will suggest two:

    a. Create a huge arc wtih Ramiel as the primary contact where the rewards at the end of each mission is a Shard and the reward at the end of the arc is a Component. Each mission would fit with the Incarnate lore and would reveal more as the arc progresses. Missions could be done in teams or individually with equal rewards for a successful (not auto) completion. Arc could be repeated via Ourobouros.

    b. Create a large, related series of Shard missions that are offered randomly to level 50 players who have opened the Alpha slot. A similar system is already in game offering TIP missions and a Shard Mission system could be derived from that programming. Yes, it would take a lot of work to create quality missions but this game deserves to have that work done so that individual players have a fair chance to demonstrate their skills to the esteemed Incarnates like Statesman and Lord Recluse.

    4. RNG based rewards inevitably leads to incessant grinding which, most players will acknowledge, is the bane of any MMO game. Skilled players want content and massive amounts of meaningful content that provides them with a story line they can follow and be rewarded accordingly at the end for their diligence in completing it. Unskilled players just want the rewards without the thoughtful work and those players should not be Incarnates.

    5. The Incarnate System could and should be much more individually testing that what it is and seems to be headed for in future releases. As it is now, the laziest, most unskilled players can join a TF PUG and be rewarded richly while more highly skilled players receive far fewer rewards (or none at all). In the lore of comic super heroes, the lesser skilled pretenders fail while the more highly skilled ones succeed. Allowing the RNG to determine who moves forward and who lags behind runs counter to everthing super hero lore is based upon.

Summary: Even with the first inteeration of the Incarnate System, the players deserve better and more than what has been done to this point. Allowing the RNG to control the system is an insult to the player base and to the Incarnate characters and lore. Change the thinking soon or risk the system crashing into disuse due its denial of skilled players the challenges and rewards they so richly deserve.
I do not understand. Can you explain this a different way?
  5. Hrm. More on this:

Catalyst Control Center seems to be hopelessly bugged ATM. (i.e., CCC never starts up. Rightclick on your desktop, and on the context menu select "Catalyst Control Center". Cursor spins for a second, then acts like nothing happened.)

I haven't tried dialing back to previous driver revisions, but I've tried Driver Sweeper for uninstalling ATI, then removing all remains from the system, then attempting a reinstall for ATI 10.11. Drivers install quickly and it's giving 3D acceleration, but the CCC is nonresponsive.

This is a recurring bug apparently with ATI users; there've been a number of suggestions on ATI's forum about how to get the CCC to work without much success.

I mention it here because I think my issues are temperature related. I reactivated an ATI overlay in WIn7 so I can monitor the device temperature. I begin to see artifacts in the game and on my system once the VPU temp hits around 60ish degrees Celsius. It peaks around 70ish.

During this time, the fan on my video card is NOT spinning up accordingly to moderate the temperature. This is something that I didn't notice 'til I took off my headphones. The ATI card's heatsink/fan was always a bit whiny since I got it, and I can definitely hear the fan spin up when I first reboot. But whatever governs the temperature sensor in the CCC app doesn't seem to be active since i'm unable to get into CCC at all. It used to be commonplace that, as action picked up in a 3D game, I'd hear the fan spin up to match. Not so anymore.

I THINK this is what the issue is: CCC is misbehaving/not loading correctly, so temperature governance of the VPU is out the window. VPU temperature gets higher, video starts acting weird, in 2D/3D. (I'll watch to see if I begin to see the video tearing during certain temperatures.)

...any suggestions for fixing the CCC? This isn't a COH question now, but all the tricks on AMD's web forums haven't helped (including wiping out ATI references in the Windows/Assembly folder - I just don't see entries there at all, which I'd guess is also a problem).

Not true in my experience. I only had to escort him to the beginning of the 4th floor (leading to the 3rd). Getting him there got me a thank-you, and a mission complete after the 12 cops were rescued.

Difficult mission - one better done with a full team for more generous time/less stress, but very doable solo, at least with an illusion build, Super Inviso + Deceive made it trivial to get to Mr. Y, and to get around Mr. X without risking a mission fail. I ran through it once already and counted each PPD I found. Just 11, and I looked everywhere before taking down Mr. X in spite, then letting the guy die in a fire.

This. I had a bit of forewarning from Master-Blade that it would be confusing (we were chatting as he was running it while I was ninja'ing the explore badges in the PC sewers). By the time I started the flashback arc, I read each bit of the dialogue, and it's on the "mission accept" text page of the introductory conversation with Vincent Ross. It's a bit vague, but having heard MB's confusion earlier I actually understood what it was trying to do (coupled with being familiar with how the mechanic worked Praetorian-side).

The problem was execution, and I think the mission's somewhat buggy because of this. You get 3 choices for side contacts: Dubrowski of Cage Consortium; Ansaldo of the Family; and Diviner Maros. The blue text made it sound like Dubrowski and Ansaldo "worked" for Maros, so you'd lead up to him as a contact. I chose to start with Ansaldo on the first mission, but I also checked with Maros as well each time I'd done the mission acceptance with Ross. First mish was a Family side job. Second mish didn't have anything. Third mish had a Maros job. Fourth had a Family job. Fifth, I was rewarded with Ansaldo as my backup in the mission. Sixth was just a Rikti doll farm.

On that pass, I was awarded both badges (the main arc badge, and the side contact badge). I'm unclear as to the criteria required - that second mission not having a 2ndary goal was odd to me, so I figured it might've broken, but I continued from mish 3 onward.

Hope this breakdown of events help for those who didn't get the side contact badge.

(As an aside... I seriously loved the all-dark maps. Gimme that for AE gaddammit. )

I completely agree. "Frantic" and "fun" are two good F words to use. It takes getting used to, if you don't know how to get started (gotta be in the right area, gotta know which stage you're on and how to get to the next one), but once those tidbits are done, it's smooth sailing.

This is the best way to approach it I think. The event nets you the event badge and other goodies in the meantime, and with a full team you should be able to get your kill quota for the FEs easily (remember the new scaling system for boss vs lt's vs minions). I was getting frustrated on the underground hunt yesterday when someone pointed this fact out to me. Now I feel t3h dumb for it.

So threre's nothing "wrong" with the 1,100 thread (because that's where we're going to stuck until I20) and when someone breaks 1200 there'll probably be a thread for that too (despite the next badge being at 1250).

P.S. The main reason we didn't start this one is because most top badgers will move from the 980s into the 1,100s in just a few hours. *shrugs*
Case in point: it only took me about 4 hours to make it to 1,100.
Not trying to start a fight here, honestly. But, on the same token, you could also say there's nothing wrong with using the official badge count format as well, especially for the higher up-but-not-quite-badgeaholic players who'll be cresting the 1K mark soon. I guess that's why I was thrown off by having it initially dismissed in lieu of the (at the time buried) 1100 thread.

When I cooked up the 1K thread, it was after seeing Master-Blade's take on the badge count club for 750, so this one just seemed a natural fit. I'll leave this here, and I'll prolly post in the 1100 thread too just cuz it's there. If someone makes an 1110 thread, I might post there too. Interwebs are free that way. XD

Whatever. This milestone can stay, the 1100 can stay, and whatever the current badge cap is, that'll get stayed too. Now to hit that cap!

Why 1100? I figured to keep to the whole "badge name" for the milestone counter too. That'd be 1000, 1250, etc.

Hm. Was this something that you "always" saw, or did it just start happening one day? I was running pretty smooth (well, as smooth as ATI drivers are for COH) until last week.

I see those artifacts on the selection screen for the initial login, and subsequent ones. But yeah, they DO go away. I'm somewhat more concerned with the dual-monitor video tearing that occurs outside COH (granted, outside the scope of this conversation, but worth noting as I started getting this issue at the same time as the selection screen artifacting).
  24. Good morning:

I've been debugging this for about a week now off and on with sporadic success, so I'm presenting my symptoms, along with the usual suspects of info requested, to see if anyone has opinions/experience with the same issue.

Symptoms history: I've had this box since around April/May of this year. Zero problems until last week, when I went away for a week (work trip, powered down the PC) and came back. I noticed on my dual monitor setup that I would get what looked like video tearing for very brief intervals (less than a second) on both monitors, in roughly the same locations (lower quarter of the monitors). This would be in Windows (2D) itself, not not limited to any game.

I've done a full uninstall of the 10.8 ATI driver (not using a specific utility though, just thru Windows uninstall), then reinstalled with the latest driver set (as of this post, 10.11). Symptoms persisted. Suspected possible video card hardware issue, so I contacted Dell Support and allowed them to investigate. They ran a BIOS update for the system and the video card (although I'd already done the video card BIOS back in May, so it didn't apply). Post-reboot, this seemed to resolve the issues for about four days.

Yesterday, I noticed artifacting in the character selection screen (what would appear as scattered colored blocks on-screen). This went away once I selected a character and entered the game.

I'm concerned about the video card itself and that it might be fried or otherwise damaged. Box is on a quality UPS, and my wife (who was home while I was away) did not cite any power fluctuations or spikes that could have affected our circuit. I'm leaning towards hardware fault here, but it helps to have someone else spotcheck and see if there's an obvious solution I'm incapable of seeing.

Any thoughts on this? Experience with revision 10.11 good or bad? Posting COHHelper and HijackThis logs now. If anyone can review the below material, I'd be grateful. Remember: This also appears in 2D mode, although admittedly I haven't seen it since Dell got their greasy mitts on my system last Friday.

Cheers, and thanks for any assistance.

    -T.
