Let's face it, I break any number of forum rules every day, mostly those about staying on topic. >.< Mew is silly and lives off coffee, whatcha expect? =~.o=

I still don't think that means we should accept bad, stupid, or unjust rules.

I don't feel we should either. I just object to the use of comparing Slavery or the like with forum rules. =^.^= Let's face it, I break any number of forum rules every day, mostly those about staying on topic. >.< Mew is silly and lives off coffee, whatcha expect? =~.o=

One thing I'ma say though; I rather like how Lighthouse doesn't just delete or lock threads without *saying* something first.

I know some people might not understand >< but for me - Knowing *why* a thread was shutdown is invaluable. It feels... well more respectful. I know technically we as posters aren't entitled to a whole lot of that if we break the rules - but it feels better to not just have your post vanish into the void. A locked thread is still dead - and it lets you see what you need to avoid.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Gah, I agree and disagree at the same time! >.< It is nice to know why something was locked, that is for sure, but just having Lighthouses name in a thread gives that thread a huge ammount of attention.

    Example time! =^o^=

There was a thread started shortly after Lighthouse came to us. This thread was located in the forums games section and it was about telling amusing anecdotes about telemarketers. Nothing harmless in that, right? I lacked a telemarketer story, but I did have one of a different though very simular sort. All in the interests of good harmless fun and humour the story was posted. And it caused a shift in the whole thread that eventually led to the thread getting locked and Lightouse firmly stating just why it was getting locked. I was very upset and distraught over the effect my post had on the thread as a whole. I worried that I had ruined what could have been a bit of fun and laughs for others with my post. That was nothing though compared to what happened next. I was struck in short succession by several private messages, some of them written in very nasty tones and words, about the things I had gotten wrong with my story. The events of the story took place when I was still in highschool and I could not remember every word or action taken and knew there were inconcistancies when the story was posted. If for a moment I thought I would upset anyone with the story I would not have posted it. >.< I sent Lighthouse a PM asking, practically begging really, that the thread be deleted.

But the damage had been done and I was a hair's bredth away from abandoning the forums I was so distraught by some of the reactions. So, I can not agree with Lighthouse posting why a thread gets locked. There are too many people who trail after the red names like lost puppies that otherwise would never dream of looking at a thread if not for the red name post.

Did I deserve the pm's? Maybe. There were some that were very polite and explained where I was wrong with a single certain fact, for it was a single line in the whole story that was the cause of the pm's. Some even went so far as to assume it must have been a naming error on my part, not that the line itself was wrong. But the bile that filled the others was very off putting, to say the least.

Uh, I don't think it is fair to draw a connection between the Civil Rights movement, Slavery, and the Underground Railroad with anything on the forums. For one thing the is the matter of scale, and another the gross injustices that those laws created or movements sought to undue. I don't think any but the longest and most strained corrallation can be drawn between Forum Moderation and any of the three examples above.

    [/ QUOTE ]
So if a law is just a little unjust, it should be followed blindly under all circumstances?

BBhumeBB's examples are extreme, but why should his logic only apply to really really super bad laws? 200 years ago, those laws were not viewed as really really super bad.

Ever heard the phrase, "give an inch and they take a mile"? Just because a particular injustice is "small stuff" doesn't mean it isn't worth opposing.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not quite what I meant. =>.<= The problem with laws being just a little unjust, is that the injustice of them could alll be in your perception of them. Or, the law may not be unjust, but the law enforcers may be evil twisted little scociopaths, if you will permit to be a little extreme. Or, if you rather, the enforcers could be too heavy handed.

I think the problem is that not only is Lighthouse a new element within the forums, and human nature always rebels and takes arms against that which it is not familier, but Lighthouse is also a very different hand at modderation then what we had before. Lighthouse is not without flaw, I have personal experience on that front, and he sometimes use to post reasons why the thread was getting locked. I believe he did this as a sort of lesson. Instead of a thread just being locked we now knew why it was locked so that we could avoid a repeat of the situation again, assumming we had been ignorant of the rules infractions to begin with. It was just that act that landed me several very unwanted and distressing tells. When the situation was brought to Lighhouses attention he promptly replied that he would set it to rights by simply deleting the thread.

To use your own phrase, we were giving the inch and took the mile before Lighthouse came. He is just giving us new boundries and limits. We and him have to take the time to get used to the new arrangement.

Sure sometimes breaking a law that is obviously unfair or unconstitutional (in the US anyway) turns into a good thing. See Rosa Parks. However, that is the exception and not the rule. A Questionable law is still just that, a law. It must be followed.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Those avenues include civil disobedience (in the larger context of society). the civil rights movement, as you note, is the most potent example of this in recent US history. Antiwar protests come to mind as well. Gandhi was a master of the technique.

There are laws which individuals cannot, from their ethical standpoint, follow. Others may be dismayed or disgusted by the ethical stand in question, but that does not erase the right of a citizen to disobey a law he finds intolerable (even though he will face criminal or civil penalties for doing so).

We may, with the great examplars of civil disobedience, King and Gandhi and others, draw a line that separates non-compliance with a hateful law from violence to others. I can immolate myself in protest of a law I find unjust, even though suicide is illegal in many jurisdictions, and I may face criminal penalties for my action ;-) I have no moral right to set someone else on fire.

Drawing a line elsewhere is problematic. Constitutionality? Slavery was Constitutional for 70-odd years and many abolitionist actions broke laws which were perfectly constitutional, as, for example, the Underground Railroad violated the Fugitive Slave Act.

Now, since I am a new comer to this discussion I will also just say I feel Lighthouse is a little mod happy at times. But to be fair, we did get away with a lot of stuff before he arrived.

So, will these be the old style 1 Free costume change per Costume Slot tokens? (eg, if you had 3 costume slots unlocked, that character would get three free changes) Or like the new vet reward Costume Changes which are good for one change total?

Also, theres probably going to be a comment about the value of the veteran reward costume tokens in relation to these free ones any minute now.

    [/ QUOTE ]

To be honest, I'm not sure. Blame me as the newbie I'd wager that they will likely be in the style of free ones given out in the past. Take that for what you will

I am seriously wierded out right now. Catching up on this thread I saw Foo summon Statesman! He summoned him like he was a primordial wizard or something. The powers of The Foo I knew were many, but scorcery and the magical arts? Whooo, those are new to me..

lurkers, you guys answer too, ok

    [/ QUOTE ]

You'd want us to come out of the shadows to voice our opinion? That would put our lurker status in jeopardy.

Personally, I'd like them to get what they have finished and tested released. If that means that the Vet Rewards will be delayed, fine by me. I won't even notice while I'm in Faultline, or on the Police Scanner.

The features of Issue 8 have no bearing on my subscription status, however. I would keep playing even if Issue 8 was going to be delayed a year, I just love playing CoH.
