Quote:From Freitag's posted patch notes on behalf of Positron, and this is how the letter closed:edit - maybe not, I realized that he signed off the patch notes as "Lead Designer"... though I suppose that might not be exactly the same as "Lead Developer". Who knows.

Quote:Thank you, Zwillinger. That's good to hear. We look forward to further updates. Here's where we currently stand:
- We have a high level of confidence (based on initial internal testing last week) that the launcher issue has been addressed and *should be* live for tomorrow. There's still more testing to do, however barring any major issues, this should be ready very soon. I have requested regular updates regarding this and expect to hear confirmation this afternoon sometime. I'll let you know as soon as I do.
Quote:The not as good news is that we were unable to work these fixes into the release (i.e.; tomorrow's) build. This will go into the first publish following the release of i21, which should hit live servers sometime later this week. It will hit either Training Room or Beta before hand, so I'll update when it's in a test environment so everyone can check it out.
Quote:I do apologize that the Market issue is not going to be addressed prior to launch. If you wish to hurl insults at me, please commence at your convenience. -
I would hope that Galaxy City, which I will definitely miss, is the only zone that's "sacrificed", i.e. changed beyond recognition with no regard to its traditional role. Mercy Island's revamp is a much better method to emulate in future.
The idea that the devs can "improve" the game by trashing its older content instead of refurbishing it needs to be headed off at the pass. -
Quote:That's what I plan to do, mutatis mutandis, after downloading the Windows version via Boot Camp on my Mac and swapping that into the Cider wrapper "c_drive" folder. This used to work reliably, but the last time I tried this was with a version downloaded through the NC Launcher, which didn't work for some reason.I provided instructions for files swapping at the top of this thread.
I'm definitely going to back up my prefs this time - thanks for that tip. -
While I agree that poor access to the store isn't the worst thing in the Mac client, please note Cuppa's OP:
Quote:The Mac client version on live (4462) is NOT compatible with Issue 21. If you patch up to the new version, you will not be able to use the Paragon Store without crashing.
*Because the NCSoft Launcher does not appear to be capable of patching the actual Mac client (Cider itself) you will most likely be instructed by our community support reps to remove your existing Live client and install the new one from scratch. While in its spirit this is correct, it is also WRONG, and will cause you to lose all your character slot settings, saved costumes, architect missions, architect characters, screenshots, and demorecords.
With previous versions of CoH when I was dual-booting, I'd occasionally swap files between the Windows and Mac versions, i.e. the Cider "C" drive contents, just to spare the re-downloading, but I'd have to back up my saved files as above. This swapping hasn't worked so well since the NC Launcher was introduced, but I'm willing to try it again come Tuesday if there isn't a better Mac option in place. -
Quote:To say nothing of Zerwillinger's hope that the font bug "may be resolvable through some CSS magic". Because the Paragon Store is actually running off WebKit? Seriously? What kind of poor code monkey has Paragon chained to their desks to work on this? The irony of this question is the fact that the entire store is just a web site.
-
Thank you for all the unofficial support, CuppaManga. I keep an alias of my CoH Cider C Drive on my desktop for quick access to such things as costumes and AE scenarios, but I never imagined I'd have to use it to compensate for Paragon's shortcomings.
As for the store, it seems that dual-booting into Windows is the only reliable option that is foreseeable for using it regularly. That would be a tremendous shame and an unfortunate opening move for the transition to CoH Freedom.
(And honestly, why isn't there a web version of the Paragon store?) -
In another forum I frequent, a simple piece of punctuation stands for a moment of silence upon the news of someone's passing:

Quote:Are you getting your argument fresh from 1998? These days, if I want to play a Windows-only game on my Mac, I'll restart it in Windows via Apple's Boot Camp, assuming I don't want to use a virtualized OS environment. That sucks for Mac users but there is a reason some call it Macintrash. Macs aren't for gaming and that is one fact.
The up-to-date fact is that if Paragon Studios can't produce a working Mac client even using Cider in time for the "VIP Head Start" launch, then that failure will not only speak volumes about their technical abilities and resources, but also relegate paying customers from VIPs to POSs.
I of course hope the devs are able to provide for their OS X customers. It would be a shame to add this to their ongoing list of unfixed bugs, e.g. the forum logout and the AE filter. -
Quote:Literally? As in, you believe Macs are composed of gears in need of oiling? It is quite literally the "squeaky wheel" of this game which has siphoned away far more of the Devs' energies than it could ever reasonably justify from a cost/benefit point of view.
Really, if you're going to take it upon yourself to speak on behalf of Zwillinger and the Devs - and please do cite your sources when you talk about Paragon's cost/benefit ratios - at least put your rhetoric in order. -
Quote:Thank you for the follow-up, Zwillinger. I hope you will have an update for us soon now that VIP Head Start has a firm date.I'm still following up with the Engineers about the issues Mac users are experiencing with the Launcher (i.e.; having to use the work around each time you want to log in). This is a high priority concern for us and something we're getting regular updates on from all parties involved.
For CoH Freedom to embark on the first phase of its launch without a functional Mac client would be extraordinarily disappointing and would not set an encouraging precedent. -

Quote:Indeed, but one should not be under any illusions about where CoX stands in the NCSoft hierarchy. If there are any website problems for its big earners of any kind, they're going to get attention first. And then there are office politics to consider. Whatever the case, it's evident that there's more than just a technical barrier for NCSoft to take care of the problem.Technically, they should be at least nominally responsive to our community people. This would be comparable to the NCSoft server ops saying "oh, there goes those Paragon people again, always whining when we turn off their game servers."
-
Quote:I'm going to guess no, they don't.The forums are not managed or supported by either the Paragon Studios devs or community management directly. They are managed by NCSoft datacenter people. Its unclear to me if they even *read* our forums.
Quote:But I'm assuming they know there is an actual problem.
At this point, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be more effective to use the NC Soft Support web page's "Ask a Question" feature, under the "Account Support-General" category. -
Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power
The sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour
Of the galaxy we call the Milky Way -

Quote:"I'm Still Here" was an Andy Kaufman-level hoax, not a real documentary (it's not exactly great publicity for Phoenix to have been playing CoH while pretending to be a downward-spiralling celeb wasting his time and talent)."Do any Hollywood celebs play COH?"
They know of a few, Joaquin Phoenix played CoH in a documentary. TheNet says he heard Vin Diesel does. -
The best-laid schemes of mice and devs gang aft agley.
Quote:Since the City of Heroes we've all "grown up with" has evolved, with help of Archive.org, it's time to take a look back and reminisce about the good ole days.
CoH.com - version 1"We want City of Heroes to be a game of stories where the players determine the result"
"In time villains can create their own organizations and erect secret bases. They'll always need to be on guard against the continual vigilance of player heroes. Consensual Player Versus Player combat will be introduced, as will team vs. team play."
"Villains set out to steal the holidays!: Thursday, December 15, 2005 Silver Mantis helps Black Scorpion set Operation Scrooge in motion to steal the holidays."
"Marvel Lawsuit Information: Wednesday, December 14, 2005 Marvel Entertainment, Inc., NCsoft Corporation, NC Interactive, Inc., Cryptic Studios, Inc. Settle All Litigation"Quote:I dunno. It's fun for me to go back and view old articles, check out the old pre-beta forums (in a limited capacity), and reminisce about all the things that drew me to the game. -
Best: Calendar Man. While you'll have to work some holidays, just think of all the others you'd get to claim you needed to take off.
Worst: Dr. Hugo Strange. Sure, he keeps regular clinical hours at his office that would provide you with a desk job, but you'd always have to check the coffee for experimental serums that could turn you into a mindless ravening beast-man. -

Quote:In the cases of AE and Tips, the imbalanced risk/time-reward may well stem from the devs' desire to attract player participation in new features. Tweaking that after launch not only requires further development time, but also risks drawing criticism, so apparently any losses are being cut while the devs go on to create entirely new systems (e.g. Incarnate, Freedom). My point, to phrase it delicately, is that what the developers have stated as their intent for the players, and what the reward system communicates, are somewhat different on occasion. I don't have a proposed remedy - I am merely noting the message that I receive.
Gaming post-Issue 13 PVP and playing the volatile Wentworth/Black Market are different cases... -
Thanks for the information, Zwillinger and Snowglobe. Amazon is selling the CoH Architect edition for $8.90, incidentally, which is a little more than it used to, IRC.
-
Thank you - that's what I assumed the normal course of events was. I'd like to be able to make a second account prior to Freedom, but I'm a little wary about the timing (and the delayed VIP head start doesn't help).
-
Quote:Thanks - I believe this has changed ("One month of game time. Activation with a valid credit card or game time card is required," says the NCSoft store about the download version). I've asked for Red Name clarification.P.S. I'm fairly certain credit card information isn't required to make a new account, but it's been a while since I've made one so I'm not sure.
