Is there any way in game to measure the actual "hit points" of a Giant Monster? (I know everyone's damage scales, but there has to be some number that the critter starts with, that once exceeded, it's defeated.)

Or any other objective measure of a critter's "difficulty"?

If so, how do the individual parts of Lusca compare to other GMs?

    [/ QUOTE ]

If you hold your cursor on the red health bar in the target menu, if you give it about 5 seconds, it'll tell you exactly how much HP they have.

[/ QUOTE ]Wow. Playing for a year and a half, and I didn't know that! Thanks!

    [/ QUOTE ]

You'll also find that people have a metric F-Ton of endurance. Giant Monsters? Like... 8,000end.

[/ QUOTE ]Waitaminnit, I know what you're doing! You're trying to turn me into a Powerplayer!

No, never, I are casual, I not be think about numbers, nooooooooooooooo!!!

You can't log in on a new character until the previous one finishes timing out anyway. So how time much would it really save? How long does it take to type in your password?

    [/ QUOTE ]
Actually, that's backwards. For example, if you loaded a second instance of the game and logged into another character on the same account, the new log-in takes priority. Oh, you'll get an error message, but hit the login button again and you WILL log in the new toon.

[/ QUOTE ]But that's with a different instance of the game running. The 30-second countdown is an anti-abuse measure, both against griefers trying to escape before being identified, and people trying to escape from a battle that's gone south.

If they did enable a logout to Server Selection, they'd almost certainly make sure it didn't shorten the countdown. You'd still only save the few seconds it takes to enter your password.

2 cents' worth: we don't rent the game. We subscribe. Wouldn't a magazine subscription be a better analogy?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Probably. I was originally just trying to be just subtly "off" from the inevitable "rental" agreement that comes up to illustrate the difference, but like many 'net conversations, it kind of took on a life of its own.

    [/ QUOTE ]
    [innocentlook]

I have no idea what you mean.

    [/innocentlook]

The more I think about it, the more I realize it's not that bad an analogy: you go buy the magazine every month, or you prepay for certain length of time in advance.

Different people read the same magazine for different reasons, the articles, the pictures, the fiction, the ads, the personals, whatever.

Yet your money gives you absolutely no control over the content. You choose what you like from what's offered. If you don't like it, you can voice your discontent (but complaining about something that isn't even present in the magazine won't get you very far), or you can stop buying it.

Of course, after that, it begins to break down, but it's still not a bad comparison.
  7. [ QUOTE ]
I am ashamed that so many people think the possibility that:
    1) A person, solely through their own ignorance and stupidity,
    2) who could harm only one self,
    3) who might complain in a blatantly and obviously stupid manner

is a good reason not to give an OPTION.

It's an option. It harms no one but the incredibly and ridiculously stupid. The only arguments against this are "people might whine" and "I don't care about this option."

Damn... Personally, I don't care about this feature. It doesn't do anything for me personally. But shooting it down for that reason or "some idiot might be an idiot" is simply lunacy.

    [/ QUOTE ]
For the record, I agree it would be nice to have the option, and have said so.

But I don't see it happening for the reasons, both realistic and exaggerated, that have been cited.

And increasing the risk of people experiencing losses THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN (examples of that scenario having already been given), so people can shave 5 seconds off their time to switch characters IS a valid reason not to implement it.

American Heritage Dictionary: "1a. Vibrations transmitted through an elastic solid or a liquid or gas, with frequencies in the approximate range of 20 to 20,000 hertz, capable of being detected by human organs of hearing. b. Transmitted vibrations of any frequency. "

The waves themselves are "sound", whether there's anything to "hear" them or not.

I used to make the argument that it doesn't make a NOISE unless someone hears it, because noise is a subjective value. No observer, no judgment, no "noise". But the dictionary doesn't support that either: "1a. Sound or a sound that is loud, unpleasant, unexpected, or undesired. b. Sound or a sound of any kind".

    [/ QUOTE ]

If there is no sensory perception of it then it isn't there. The wave is there, the mechanic that could produce sound is there, but without the sensory to feel it, or to interpret it into what is sound then its just the emission from whatever event caused it.

A deaf person can't interpret sound, however they know sound exists. A blind person can't see light but they know the wavelengths exist. Perception doesn't preclude the existence but withot the ability to perceive it, it isn't there in how we describe as 'light' or as 'sound'.

[/ QUOTE ]Far be it from me to prove Apple_Eater wrong:

Inokis, are you saying the American Heritage Dictionary is wrong?

But is Lusca really any tougher, in total, than the other Giant Monsters?

I've been on several Giant Monster runs, including multiple "Sushi Runs", and it seems to me that Lusca, overall, takes about the same total effort as any other Giant Monster.

I've seen Lusca fall to just 20 players. I've been in a group of about the same size that went after Jack and Eochai. Each of them took easily as long as the entire Lusca battle did.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Really?

That doesn't match my experience of Lusca vs the time to fell Jack or Eo at Halloween. Lusca takes longer, although a single tentacle might not take as long. And a couple of other GMs are really quick to take down (I'm looking at you, Kraken!)

[/ QUOTE ]No argument, there. Kraken's a softie!

    how very Zen.
I prefer the classics though: if a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

    [/ QUOTE ]

No. It makes the air vibrate a lot, yes, but sound is air vibrations converted into sensory information. So no listener, no sound.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    You've ever been a wood/forest?

    It's full of squirrels/badgers/bears...

    Somethings going to hear it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This hasn't always been so. There was a time before there were creatures who could interpret these signals. Since, we have proven that there are these signals ever present in every day life. Much of the 'static' you see as white noise on a tv set is leftover data from the origins of the universe. Scientists have even mapped the data and reproduced what the universe looked like at its earliest point that we can measure.

[/ QUOTE ]American Heritage Dictionary: "1a. Vibrations transmitted through an elastic solid or a liquid or gas, with frequencies in the approximate range of 20 to 20,000 hertz, capable of being detected by human organs of hearing. b. Transmitted vibrations of any frequency. "

  12. I have been referring to the "Reward Level" or the "Reward Ratio" of a given task, defining it as the ratio of Reward to Risk and/or Time (to borrow Posi's phrase), or the ratio of Reward to Effort.

However it's measured, I have been saying it's a variable figure even for a single task, because the composition of the team, the builds of the individual characters on the team and the skill/ability of the players behind the characters all affect the actual value.

Is that a valid assumption, or am I barking up a tree that doesn't even exist?
  13. You can't log in on a new character until the previous one finishes timing out anyway. So how time much would it really save? How long does it take to type in your password?

And if you're logging in multiple characters, and can't figure out how to get it down to three keystrokes, well, I'll give you a hint: "Tab, Paste, Enter".

Worst game concept ever but the refresh rate is good and its remarkably lag free.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Only because your senses mislead you into thinking there's a good refresh rate, if only you could experience things on the Quantum level, you'd see what refresh rate really means, same goes for the lag, it's a lie because your senses are synchronized to shut themselves off while other stuff is being processed!

I *DO* love the user-created content in 'Life', but I'd like it a lot better if they lowered the monthly fees

[/ QUOTE ]I wish it was easier to modify my character's build. I mean, what's up with all this "exercise" and "diet" stuff? Why can't I just adjust a slider?

There's still no reason presented why it shouldn't be an option for those who want it with the added security of enabling or disabling it being available only through Account Management.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This is a true statement, if someone wants to go into their account management screen and check a box that says "This will enable quitting to character select screen, I accept responsibility for any consequences of enabling this option" or something to that effect. Frankly I don't understand why people are so bothered by this.

    ~MM

[/ QUOTE ]"I don't care, you made it possible for me to turn off the security, so it's YOUR fault I lost all my characters!"

I'm not bothered by it, I'd like it. But THAT is part of why it's bloody unlikely.

Simple incompetence comes to mind. This is exactly what happened with ED. Even if you do argue that it was for the longterm good of the game, it was implemented horribly poorly.

B_L_Angel is not alone in doubting the truthfulness of the developers statements. If you just look over recent events

<ul type="square">[*]The Developers are notified of MA overreward problems in closed beta
[*]Developers ignore warnings [*]Developers receive further warning in open beta [*]Developers ignore open beta warnings [*]People post the problems on the boards [*]Further Ignore [*]MA goes live [*]People start using the problems [*]Developers are shocked and upset over this [*]Fit hits the shan over developer reaction [*]We have the accidental pre announcement of going rogue.[/list]

A cynical person might think that they deliberately let the MA over reward during the aniversary/ reactivation period to sucker people into renewing their accounts for a game circumstance they had no intention in allowing them to play.

[/ QUOTE ]I feel very badly for you, being forced to play a game run by incompetent, untrustworthy fools.

actually, you are. What is a rental contract? an agreement between 2 people. The laws vary from state to state, but I know from personal experience that evicting someone is not as easy as calling the police and saying the other person is trespassing.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Allowing someone to stay at your residence is far far different from renting someone a property, money aside. I also know for a fact that in the situation we're talking about, the police can and will remove a no longer desired "guest" whether they paid you some money to cover your expenses or not. Perhaps, as you note, it's a difference in our state laws, though, and we've gotten WAY WAY off on a tangent so I'm just going to jump off this derailment. Feel free to have the last word (just to note that I'm not trying to grab that and run).

[/ QUOTE ]2 cents' worth: we don't rent the game. We subscribe. Wouldn't a magazine subscription be a better analogy?

    Exactly.

Honestly it's not even that big a deal. All these people talking about how a bus load of people are swarming around their PC waiting to delete their toons are full of it anyway.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You mean to say that your real argument is that we just don't need passwords at all?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Is that what I said?

Pretty sure I never said I even have the problems people are claiming to have in this thread on either side of the argument.

All i said is every player should have the option to choose if they want to be able to log out to character select or not and that it should be selectable from ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT for security.

Maybe everyone so busy ranting against this proposal should bother reading it first.

I don't think a single person in favor of this has said it shouldn't be an option that people can enable or disable depending on their preference.

[/ QUOTE ]Even making it an option probably doesn't look like a good idea to the people in charge.

"You made it possible for me to disable the security, so it's YOUR fault __________ deleted all my characters when I left my computer unattended!"

I'd like to have it as an option, too. I live alone, so the only one I have to worry about is my cat. But not everyone is as smart as you or me, so I just can't see it ever happening.
  20. Okay, now I see. It's not that the "Kill X" spawns more enemies or anything, it's that, once you've done the initial work, you don't have to watch your tickets or your kills to know when you've gotten enough tickets to cap the mission, nor do you have to go to wherever the glowie is to end the mission.

Thanks for being patient with me.

    AE Teleporter?

Oh. AND you might see a bit of a spread. Right now the major heroside hot-spots for the Architect are Peregrine, Talos, Steel, and Atlas.

If part of the team could enter the mish from Crotoa they could do so with less lag.

    -Rachel-

[/ QUOTE ]Uhm . . . aren't they going to encounter a lot MORE delay trying to use the Croatoa AE building?

How does this make farming tickets easier?

    [/ QUOTE ]
How many bosses does it take to get 1500 tickets? I can use any map I want, set the number to be killed to x, where x is the optimal number, and as the person progressed to the next mission, x can be smaller because ticket drops increase as you move through the missions of an arc, and set x for each mission. It wouldn't take much time to find an optimal number for x. I think a team size of 3 or 4 is optimal for ticket drops.

And if this were added, I would totally make this mission arc.

[/ QUOTE ]Okay, maybe I'm having a really stupid moment here (and I am NOT ruling that out ). But what difference does it make whether the objective is "Kill all", "Kill X", "click the glowie", or "Run in circles, scream and shout"? How does the objective make the ticket potential of the mission any different?
  24. [ QUOTE ]
It would be nice, but it makes farming tickets easier, so it won't be added.

[/ QUOTE ]How does it make farming tickets "easier"? Nothing I read indicated it would also increase the number of mobs spawned.
