Currently, Virtue server appears to be booting entire teams from the game during the course of instanced missions. This happens randomly, but appears to be particularly evident upon loading office maps. Has happened to me six times in the past hour (entire teams kicked from the game on loading maps).

    Character Name:
    Darkswift

    Where I am:
    Steel Canyon

    Level:
    18/19

    Difficulty:
    +1

I won't post my machine specs because, like I said, it appears to be a server side issue.

    Thanks,

Same here. About every other mission when I enter, it sits on the CoH or CoV splash screen, never loading the map. In the end I have to force quit. Disconnected my entire team earlier, and just barely trying to enter the last mish of the vill-side dark mirror arc did it to my mastermind. I'm also on Virtue.

Edit: And now I see an announcement that Virtue is going to be down tomorrow morning, so it looks like they know about it.

The trick is to fight him by the elevators and when he gets ready to siphon, click on the vators to go down. Wait a couple of seconds and then come back up. You will find that he did not siphon you (if done at right time) and he does not follow you down. Just come back up and beat up on him and go down the vators again if need be.

On a side note, my emp/elec defender with hover was able to simply float and take him down without fleeing. The end drain from my blasts never allowed him to siphon lol.

    Anyways, hope this helps.
Reason for this is it seems his drain is unresistable and autohit, so running away when he starts it is the only way to avoid it.
  3. I'm running a BS/Fire scrapper, currently lvl 27 and having a lot of fun so far with only SO's. I plan on starting on sets at 32, my goal is to get soft-capped or relatively near it in melee and lethal defense with a single application of Parry, and let my resists and heal take care of whatever else gets through. However, I'm NOT planning an uber recharge death build, I don't care about soloing AV's or x8 anything. I would like to be able to solo +2/x3 or x4 though, and have enough recharge to keep consume up often enough so not worry too much about end. I am willing to use a cheaper rare set or two, but I don't want to break the bank, at least not too much (Yes, I realize I have a Touch of Death set in here, if it comes down to it I'll use it, but anything cheaper that will do just as well I'll take). I would also like to get an Achilles -resist proc into Slice and Whirling Sword as well, but if need be I can do without

I don't think you're understanding. This is not the same as looking at a wall vs looking out at the city. This is switching from the CoH game client, to another application, and the game's fps going UP, instead of down like one would think would happen due to another application taking focus. This is not normal behaviour.

Granted I think i17 is taking up more CPU than before even with UM off but applications that have focus always have a higher priority and take up more resources.
Umm, he said CoH has more fps when OUT of focus, not in, which I will also say is quite odd. I would send in a bug report myself, but beyond that I can't think of anything that would cause this.
  6. And more testing. Whenever CoH loses focus, whether I alt-tab out, or another program takes focus away, the frame the client is on when focus is lost gets stuck in memory. I tested this, alt-tabbing several times in different locations and zones. Every time, as soon as the game lost focus it would end up with the frame stuck in memory. Eventually I would begin to see the dark flashes occur. If I never alt-tab, or if focus is never taken away by something else, everything is fine, runs great. This also occurred in windowed mode back when I17 went live, eventually I would begin to get dark flashes while playing, even though I would never see a stuck frame upon exiting. But it would occur only after a while, during which I would regularly switch between coh, msn messenger and mids hero designer, so I'm pretty sure the same happens even in windowed; a frame getting stuck in memory upon loss of focus.

Lowering your graphics ought to make the card work a little less hard and stop that from happening.
After reading your post, I remembered that in Test I never had this problem, so I decided to test a few things. One thing was that with test, I installed the client after it had already went into closed beta, so it was beginning with fresh settings; nothing leftover from I16. With this in mind, I decided to hit the Reset to Defaults button on the graphics tab. Played around for a while, going from zone to zone and no dark flashing, closing out the client didn't show any still frames from earlier in my play session (also, the game looks so plain now with no Ultra Mode options on @_@).

After going back in-game, I started setting my options to where I had them before, did more missions, moving from zone to zone, never got any kind of flashes, and exiting the game didn't show any kind of still frames. So this has me curious if maybe it could be leftovers from I16 that was keeping my card's frame buffer from properly clearing? I'll have to play more to be sure, I was playing an old toon on Liberty for my tests since Virtue is currently down, and will report back either if the flashing returns, or later tonight if everything remains fine.

  9. In the "Players experiencing issues related to Graphics cards" sticky, some people have reported experiencing occasion split-second black or dark flashes during gameplay, myself included. Well recently I've noticed that when I close out the client, I can see some sort of still image of a point earlier in my play session, rendered right underneath the actual game. This still image looks as though it was made at a very dark gamma, and it leaves me wondering if while I'm playing, the client is switching, for just a split second, to this still image.

Example: One time I had been playing a while, had zoned to Talos, ran around then quit. As soon as the game closed out, for a brief moment I could see a darkened image of back when I was still at the train station. Another time the still image was of the level-up screen choosing a new power. It's like the game is rendering these still images and placing them under the actual game world, and has me wondering if that could be causing these black/dark flashes.

For reference, I'm running on a Radeon HD 4850 with the 10.4 drivers. CoH Helper info in next post.
  10. Okay, after some testing between the 10.1's and 10.4's, it seems to be 4x anti-aliasing the 10.4 catalyst's having trouble with. If set to 2x AA, I get the same framerate with both drivers, but when I up it to 4x, I see a big fps drop in the 10.4's that doesn't occur in the 10.1's. I'm gonna stick with the 10.4's for the time being though to test out a few other things.
  11. It's inconclusive, I'll have to play for a while to be sure, but disabling Catalyst AI seems to have solved it. I'll keep playing just to make sure and report on it later tonight before I head to bed.

Edit: Nope, still happening. It seems to be random, but so far isn't enough to keep me from playing, fortunately.

I know the problem isn't just me as someone in chat was mentioning they were having the same problem.
Have you figured out what may be causing this? I'm actually experiencing the same problem; a black flash that lasts just a split second. Running on a Radeon 4850, Windows 7 64-bit, Catalyst 10.1. I would try the new 10.4, but those make me lose over 10 fps. Gonna try a few settings both in-game and in the control center, see if I can track it down.

Edit: For now I'm reverting back to the 10.1 Catalysts. I'll give the 10.4s another go tomorrow when I'm not tired, for now I just wanna play CoH.
  14. Okay, so the official ATI 10.4 Catalyst drivers came out. I cleaned out the older 10.1's, including using Driver Sweeper and installed these. I lost about 10 fps with the 10.4's, and I'm trying to figure out what's causing it. My card is a Radeon 4850 512MB with these settings;

    Catalyst Control Panel
    Anti-aliasing: Application Controlled
    Adaptive Anti-aliasing: Quality
    Anisotropic Filtering: Application Controlled
    Catalyst AI: Advanced
    Mipmap Detail Level: High Quality
    Triple Buffering On

    In-game
    Anti-aliasing: 4x
    Anisotropic Filtering: 16x
Character and World Detail at 100%
    Bloom: Heavy at 100%
    Depth of Field Off
All Ultra Mode settings maxed out, except Ambient Occlusion which is off

At these settings, wandering around Kings Row gives me around 30 fps with the 10.1 Catalysts. With 10.4, it goes down to 18.

    New pc for I17?

I'll echo my agreement on the third system. Most powerful of the bunch of the three video-wise. CPU isn't as strong as the 2nd, but that's not nearly as important as the video card, and that Radeon 5850 should give the best performance. So yes, #3 will be the best for Ultra mode, and any other games you may decide to play down the road.

Scrappers seem interesting, especially since I love playing Brutes, I think they share the same playstyle?
Pretty much. Run in, slice/slash/smash/bash stuff til dead, repeat with next group. Just no worrying about a fury bar running down if you ever have to pause for a minute. Instead you get random critical hits for extra damage rather than a straight damage buff from fury.

Edit: Oh, and less hp, but a higher base damage. Still plenty soloable.

It would be very cool to have a foe that, if you engage one others in the area get an aggro range bonus (say an "aggro range boost" that extends 100 feet and triples the aggro range) and come after you. It would make them a particularly challenging foe to fight because you'd have to be very careful about your movements and when and where you engaged them or risk massively overaggroing.
Hehe, I'd LOVE that. So would my /SR and /shield scrappers, they've been waiting for a challenge and would happily dive down there and attack everything in sight.

Then again, I haven't run that little memory on any computer since around 2002.
For clarification, the 512MB computer is my sis', who doesn't run CoH. I just mentioned hers to explain why I run MSE rather than AVG. My computer, which is the one that had the problems, has 8GB RAM. No idea why my computer has problem with real-time protection and CoH, where yours doesn't, but I've been playing and it looks like adding an exception for my CoH folder fixed it so I can leave the AV on.

Yeah, it's Microsoft Security Essentials, although this same exact problem occurred back when I tried out Windows 7 RC. Back then I believe I used AVG. I can only guess that AVG was causing my performance woes back then as well. Switched to Security Essentials because I needed a lightweight antivirus to put on my sis computer (1.3 GHz Celeron with 512MB RAM I also upgraded to 7 from XP), and decided to try it myself.

Also to help with any future diagnosis, my performance issues were gradual. Basically a degradation of performance over time that didn't go away with a computer restart.

That's a good idea, I'll give it a try. Thanks.
  21. Well, I figured out what was causing it; the real time protection on my anti-virus. Decided to try disabling it this morning, and sure enough, game's playing smooth as silk. Funny that it only affected CoH and none of my other games, but ah well. Just have to remember to re-enable it after I'm done playing.
  22. Ok, this is frustrating me to no end. I recently got Windows 7, and at first CoX ran great on it. However, beginning last night I will get a massive frame rate drop whenever there's a large amount of power effects going off. Say, I use fire sword circle on a large group, and frame rate will briefly go down into single digits. Using shield charge in that same group is even worse, as the game will utterly freeze for a couple seconds. These lag spikes are also happening in teams, as every attack with any kind of graphical effect that is used, whether by a player or an enemy, causes a small frame rate drop. They all start going off at once, it becomes a slide show. Thing is, when I had Vista this never happened, and it's leaving me wondering if there's some setting in Windows 7 that's causing it, but I have no idea what, and I'm pulling my hair out trying to fix it.

  23. [ QUOTE ]
And I agree that the backstory is wretched. I can't imagine any of my characters being stupid enough to use any technology created by either Aeon or Crey, and I can only assume at this point that the devs are deliberately messing with our heads by describing AE as such.

[/ QUOTE ] Heh, that reminds me what I said on the first day of open beta; "Built by Aeon and funded by Crey. What could POSSIBLY go wrong?" Yah, I agree with the setiment that as far as I'm concerned, the contact for my story arc is real as is the quest she sends you on. Otherwise, I can't possibly imagine any of my characters entering an AE building knowing who built it (with one exception, a bots/traps MM of mine who is probably more insane than Aeon >.> ).

Difficulty: Medium-hard (AV at the end, recommend teammates)
Level Range: 1-54 (made for high-level toons, recommend be 40 or higher)
Synopsis: A feline hero comes to you requesting aid in her world...
Honest ratings and constructive feedback will be greatly appreciated.
  25. Arc Name: Clipping Whiskers
    Arc ID: 15596
    Faction: Villainous
    Creator Global: @Lynia
    Difficulty Level: Hard (1 AV/EB in mish 1, 2 AVs/EBs in mishs 2 and 3)
Synopsis: A strange feline villain contacts you to take care of a few problems...
Estimated time to play: About 30 - 60 minutes

(Note: It's soloable with certain ATs and/or powersets, I did it on a ss/wp brute, but you may want an ally or two. Also, due to a current invalid level glitch, the first mission is set at lvl 35-40 due to having to change an ally to compensate)
