Quote:So last night I realized there was a link in that concoction of characters, and it wasn't just you trying to be a cute and emoticon-y.Good times had been had, if anyone gets nostalgic ><
Awesome!
Ace,
I CAN'T QUIT YOUR TT PROMO GRAPHICS! I've loved them since pixel zero. -
PEP! You are a legend. You were a lot of fun to be around, which is even better than all the ruthless efficiency in the world! But on that count too, you were notorious.
I'll tell you it didn't take long before you were a better tank than I ever was. You had good pedigree though. Myrmy was a fantastic tank, and He learned from a tank named Hard Target who was not the social TT type, but was probably the best melee player in the game. Her Spines/Regen Scrapper was a better tank than 99% of the tanks in Paragon, through no fault of their own.
I'm still in CO from time to time, @Ring. I'll keep an eye out for you. I suspect we will see people come back to that game from time to time, as it is the only real alternative until the marvel game launches.
I'm trying to retcon Devildog, my munitions guy, and I'm not liking anywhere he lands. It's what happens when a career tank tries to pretend he can play other stuff. -
ACEYWACEY!!!! Intern!!!! Man, I miss you guys. It's amazing how many people in our little tanking community, and really the COH game community at large, turned out to be such stellar people. I'm talking real stand-up guys and gals, the kinds of people you'd want to have in your physical neighborhood, rather than just your virtual one. I've not seen that in any of the other MMO's I've played, not to the same extent.
Sure, we had our trolls now and then, but the server forum was filled with supportive people who were really concerned about other making sure everyone was having fun. You two are both excellent examples of that, and I salute you for it.
On the eve of Thanksgiving, know that having spent time with people like you is on my list of things I'm grateful for.
Tank Well! -

Quote:Well, this end-of-the-game thing has made me nostalgic. I started looking back at all the screenshots I had, and trying to remember all the character names (I'm really really bad at that after 5 years) and I noticed I still had those. I thought it would be killer if someone who still had an active sub could find their hero in one of them, and tell us all a story about their experience in TT.TheRing, thank you so much for this look back at where we've all been.
My story hasn't been relevant in a long time, but the last time I jumped in for a Tanker Tuesday, I noticed it hadn't changed much, which is AWESOME. I guess participation ebbed and flowed throughout the years, but the basic tenants seemed to have stuck around.
Tanker Tuesday was largely the result of 1 character, Fighting Irish. He was a great guy, and an SG mate of mine for some time. He was Inv/SS though in reality he was SS with random Inv powers. He couldn't hold aggro, hadn't taken invincibility well into his 30's, and was basically just a weak scrapper. Teams wiped with him a lot, and not the funny kind of "we are out of our league" wipes, but the frustrating sort of wipes. So I was in high demand in my SG, not because I was great, but because I wasn't as bad as he was in the role. Though we helped him, he what he really needed was an SS scrapper powerset.
The other problem we had in the early days, was rampant overblasting, and aggro-soaking defenderitis. As the game's challenge level increased, letting a blaster wipe himself started getting to be troublesome when DPS was needed. Running without a defender who had debuffed more than he could chew, made everything slower (and progress was slow enough back then). So it became obvious that people needed to know more about the tank on their team, even if they never intended to play one for real.
So I figured the best way to teach folks, would be practical application. To encourage first time rollers, and tanks of all levels, the meeting place was in KR by the IP Gate.
That was why tanker tuesday happened.
Even though it seemed to serve that primary purpose throughout it's run, it became way more than that. It was a celebration of the archetype, and a proving ground for what tanks could do, and how conceptual builds could be effective. Rather than fit all tanks into one methodology, it became a chance to explore the limits of alternate builds (no taunt tanking, provoke vs. taunt, perma-unstoppable, etc). It became a community unto itself where knowledge and skill were revered and disseminated.
Most of all, it was filled with really great players who were also really great people, and it was one of the most difficult only-kinda-virtual things I ever walked away from, and one of the few I comfortably regret.
It was a lot of work at first. And it I was always the last one to leave. As any of the emcee's that followed me can probably attest to, running a TT and participating in a TT are two wildly different experiences. In the early days, not everyone had a 50, so we had everyone hold up cards to indicate their level (<10 = 1, <20 = 2, <30 = 3, <40 = 4, and the final stretch held up a 5). Every team had 3-4 similarly levelled tanks within 4-5 levels of each other and room for sidekicks. It was a nightmare to kick off, and since it got popular quickly, I spent the first hour sending off teams as fast as I could. Some nights, I ended up duoing with a lowbie that showed up at the last minute, or didn't team at all until someone dropped. As more 50s hit the wall, it got easier. Other tanks like Kiloton, Dinah Might, Myrmydon, Pep Rally, AceMace, Key Moonpetal, and Ultraamann (hope I mispelled that right) helped out to get teams rolling faster. But it was real work, done by some amazing tankers, who were willing to volunteer and share experiences with people they never met.
Those were great days. Truly great. I'm really happy that so many people over the years have seen fit to do the work to honor the most heroic of all the archetypes this game offered. I guarantee it was appreciated. -
It's amazing enough that you've kept this event running, but the success of it's proliferation to other servers is the real testament to your enormous dedication, perseverance, and MEGA awesomeness.
Even after years of inactivity, I'd always recognize the 1st Tuesday of every month. The people who showed up to those events, and the ones who managed it through thick and thin, were a constant temptation for me to re-sub and put on tights again. But when I played I couldn't even imagine every Tuesday as a Tanker Tuesday. So epic.
Well done tanks, well done indeed!
I miss all my old school tanker friends, and wish I could have kept in touch with them all...
I'm @Ring in CO, and usually Ring on steam as well, but if not, I'm a member of the Steam Group "MEGAFORCE" which was my SG before I un-subbed. Also, there's MFERS.NET, if any of the old tanking crew want to catch up sometime. I plan on participating on TT's, however they turn out, in Champs. Look forward to meeting some of you there! -
This one is from the very first Tanker Tuesday, which was a private SG event for the Watchguard on Champion.

The next ones are from what I think was the 1st Public Tanker Tuesday, also on Champion.

Ice... N/A
Thought someone might be interested in those.
In my opinion, the game was good, but made great by the community. I've never experienced anything like it before or since. I have great memories, thanks for that! -
By that logic, if the regular (and irregular) attendees of and long running event are THE SAME AS the members of an SG of SGs, then they are also THE SAME AS subscribers to an MMO.
So, maybe we could get a plaque dedicated to all the players of City of Heroes/Villains! That would be awesome.
Maybe we could put it on that annoyingly blank wall in Kings Row, and maybe we could use the text from AceMace's orginal post.
Oh noes!!! It started all over!!!!
Tanker Tuesday either deserves or does not deserve recognition in this manner based on it's own merits. Comparing it to some empire-building exercise that exists primarily for the benefit of itself is just plain silliness, no matter what. -

I find it funny when people who disagree are attacked for not agreeing with someone elses opinion. Why is the person disagreeing not intitled to thier opinion?
[/ QUOTE ]
That's not funny, it's mean! If you want to disagree, doing anything other that simply stating that fact, opens up your argument for review. I've seen a lot of attacks on arguments, but not on persons. If you notice otherwise, you should report it. It's your heroic responsibility! -
[ QUOTE ]
And this is how people should feel. The whole "I've been in it for years. We need a plaque!!!" Is nothing but self-serving and concieted. As Bill and others have said, RO has done more then TT ever has. Yet you don't see RO in here saying "We need a plaque because we are so cool!"
[/ QUOTE ]
I know many of the proponents of this idea personally, and though we've not kept in touch for a couple years, I can say with a clear conscience that I highly doubt any single one of them is supporting this cause from a self-serving or self-aggrandizing platform. These are some of the most selfless gamers I've ever had the pleasure to share time with and the automatic assumption that they are trying to somehow profit from this or otherwise congratulate themselves says far more about the accuser than the accused.
Now, I emcee'd the majority of the first 30 or so TANKER TUESDAYS, and I suppose you could call me the founder if you are the type that needs to point fingers. But let me be clear, it is woefully inaccurate to point to any one person or SG as being responsible for the success and longevity of TANKER TUESDAY. From the very start it was a community effort, done by the Tanker Community for the community as a whole. I am not even sure you could count the number of tankers that were created just for participation in that event, by persons otherwise uninterested in tanking or from entirely different servers. Tanker Tuesday's have been encouraged on other servers in the past. They've even occurred on The Test server (though initiated and emcee'd by persons other than myself). I had even offered to come help local tanker communities to get their own versions started. But the fact that it's remained such a staple of the Champion server experience doesn't diminish the accomplishment of 5 years of continuous participation and involvement. That's just plain amazing for any MMO.
In fact, this event and it's significance has had WIDE recognition from both the DEVs (attendance, launcher feature) as well as the forums-reading playerbase (2006 Player Run Event of the Year) and even many of the posters in this thread that disagree with the suggestion as posted still recognize the impressive longevity and resilience of the monthly event, which is pretty tanky of it if I do say so myself.
Some kind of "permanent" recognition of the event would be a fitting tribute to an event that has already become such a fixture of the game. If it doesn't happen, guess what? Tanks will still tank, and they will still tank with each other on the first Tuesday of every month.
As far as this whole RO argument... I should start off by admitting that I've never heard of Repeat Offenders, or at least don't remember hearing of them. Of course, I haven't been in the game for a couple years so maybe that's why, but regardless, any recognition of their efforts should be a completely separate issue. If they are as MEGA as they sound, I'm sure the supporters of this particular suggestion would be more than willing to support one that recognizes RO's awesomeness as well.
However this if-not-one-then-not-the-other argument is ludicrous. Merit for something like this should be judged in a vacuum, not comparatively.
Carry on with the debate, but keep in mind that the persons supporting this aren't doing so to hang their accomplishments over the heads of others, but simply and and humbly involve the entire game in celebrating an event that for many, embodies the very reasons we play these games in the first place.
Unadulterated community-wide involvement and support (and lots and lots of SMASH!) -

Although, a plaque with something like "Tanker Tuesday, Home of the Ringslide" would really work.
[/ QUOTE ]
Dang, between the Ringslide and OMGTEKR!!!!, I can't even leave for a couple hours or years and catch a break from you people!!! Sheesh....
When I got mad at you I would call you Smarmydon in my head. :P
Seriously though, I am awestruck by the amount of awesome still clobbering around Paragon City. So great to see these old names and I can't wait to see you all tonight.
Pep, that is one of the greatest drawings ever made, btw. You Rule.
And Tank_Washington, thanks for the kind words! C'mon over to champ for a night, it wont kill ya to watch me die repeatedly and ridiculously.
That goes for all of you, agreers and disagreers alike! Live and love a little hot TT action, and then debate the plaque. It's the right thing to do. -
If it were up to me, which is obviously not the case, not only would I place a marker there as AceMace has suggested, but I'd have 400+ tankers put it up!
I think it is completely MEGA that you guys have kept the TT Torch burning. On the first tuesday of every month, no matter where I am, a little voice reminds me of where I'm not!

Tank well, and give 'em hell! -
I teamed with I_am_machine, nyb, and duchess_frost among others last night for some sweet xpx2 action. Managed to travese all of 39, and half of 40 over the course of a couple hours, which is pretty sweet considering my late start.
Anyway, good peeps them Force of Furiers (not to be confused with forcefull furriers). Thanks for the team! -
My goal for 2007 is to liven up TankHQ, make it the most MEGA tank channel of all time.
-
Edited because my slowness was beat to the punch.
-
I just teamed with Hospitality for the first time, on a really quiet pug. Sorry i didn't faceplant, without it your welcome to the server isn't quite complete!
