Raph Koster on mudflation
Complete data report on the CoH salvage market from January to March found Here for Heroes and Here for Villains (Special Thanks to Balshor for that awsome project and good luck with the theses).
Case study on Virtual Economies by Edward Castronova Associate Professor of Economics at CSU, Fullerton, USA.
Blog entry on Currency Control by Steve Williams (Game Designer) -
[ QUOTE ]
"Inflation is a rise in the general level of prices over time. It may also refer to a rise in the prices of a specific set of goods or services. In either case, it is measured as the percentage rate of change of a price index"
Inf goes up -> recipes/salvage go up slower -> prices go up
Seems self-explanatory
[/ QUOTE ]
Its also self explanatory that the prices in the market atm for heroes which is the side with most farming options and largest farming population are actually DROPPING.
I dont need google to learn what inflation is i got my 1st year macro/micro economics book (Economics by Welch & Welch)to check on it thanks.Dropping a definition doesnt change the fact that a)Prices are not actually going up b) there is no such thing as depreciation in a virtual economy with only exception virtual economies that relate to foreign exchange rates such as WoW (gold buying with real money affected through USD value in international market) and Second Life (where you can buy in game currency with real money).
And to be honest ask any developer they will answer to you that bottom line Inflation in game is preferred over deflation because deflation destroys content which is one thing developers dont want.
Finally instead of the rubbish proposals of "removing farming 100% to control the non existant inflation" ,lead designer of Ultima Online and the creative director behind Star Wars Galaxies Raph Koster points out the following as standard ways to control inflation in virtual economies:
-reducing the amount of value in the economy via means such as: item decay, item deletion (either via challenges where you can lose items, character purges, etc.
- Refusing to up the level limit, and instead introducing orthogonal advancement paths.(sounds familiar?) This single mechanism is probably the single biggest slowdown you can effect. Many long-running successful games got that way by simply never upping the level cap, and instead investing their expansion in enriching the content and encouraging repeat play. (sounds familiar?)
-Obsessive attention to economic stats and adjusting all economic drains to account for all the influx. This often means punishingly high costs for players, btw.
Thanks for the discussion.
PS: Apologies for the derail. -
[ QUOTE ]
Heh, your lack of knowledge on the concept of inflation amuses me no end
[/ QUOTE ]
Obviously that was the best you could do supporting your rubbish about inflation
Do some research about virtual economies and CoH and come back with some proof to back up what you say and then we can talk. -
[ QUOTE ]
Prices will always go up when there's an increase of ingame currency. Please, try and refute this, it will be funny to read.
[/ QUOTE ]
Whats funny to read is people thinking that removal of farming from the game will fix the game.thats hilarious.
As for currency pushing prices up.
I posted these 2 charts in another thread.
Hero Rare Salvage Fluctuation Jan-March
Villains Rare Salvage Fluctuation
Its funny how both sides have huge amounts of currency in the market due to both sides having good inf farming missions but Villains side market is pushed constantly up due to lack of good arcane salvage farming mission.
Supply is the regulator of the market and not the amount of influence circulating, and its pretty obvious considering hero side with an abundance of inf keeps prices lower.
I hope you had fun reading this. -
[ QUOTE ]
Whilst Farming increases supply of Purples recipes, it also supplies farmers with vast amounts of influence (from both Purples and raw inf from farming).
[/ QUOTE ]
Well.Farming increases supply in: Purple recipes,Magic Salvage,Uniques (the good ones). In fact its the regulating market factor for those. Most obvious example is Katie TF.Nerfed Katie led to an inflation of Unique prices. And total lack of a Katie equivelant BM side has led to skyrocketing prices too.
[ QUOTE ]
So whilst supply increases, the system is awash with far more influence. If both of these were in equilibrium, then there would be no net effect, but the inf supply is concentrated primarily on influence.
[/ QUOTE ]
Hmmm i dunno really i think Hero market is pretty balanced at the moment.Prices scale good based on price and usage and use of recipes.Dont know just my opinion tho. -
[ QUOTE ]
1. Inflation of prices.
[/ QUOTE ]
This is not true.Have a look at market report from January till March and you will release if farming inflates prices or not.Farming is the factor that keeps prices down due to increased supply of goods.
Its the equivelant of having 10 factories producing product x.Suddenly government shuts down 5 of them and product x supply is cut by half while demand is same and keeps increasing.Guess where the prices go. -
[ QUOTE ]
whats actually sad is if PBs had a form of human form mez protection they would actually be pretty decent in PvP, good damage ranged and melee, really good resistences, dull pain and heals.....
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah is true that stalko.I am still gonna go in RV with one just for the "different" factor even if i get perma creamed -
[ QUOTE ]
I'm curious how a PVP-oriented Fire/Fire Tank holds up compared to other tanks(assuming it's well built and slotted). I ask because I haven't really PVP'd at all, but it's becoming more attractive lately, and my lvl 50 F/F is geared to go.
Opinions anyone?
[/ QUOTE ]
You wont be easy to kill but you will lack punch to kill stuff. All in all you will have survivability but lack ability to kill anything.
fire primary is great for PvP but for secondary Energy is a one way option for tanks atm especially for solo. -
[ QUOTE ]
then we will partition this to be called the "Smurf grats board" instead of defiant villains as anyone non smurf wont bother reading or posting again.
Guys if you post just remember to set the little 'reminder' at the bottom after posting, youll be able to find it easy from your personal home area then.
Being political and nice just got me abused through tells so I really cant be bothered to play silly games with bullies... I have school teachers and conglomarates to do that with.
[/ QUOTE ]
First of all i am not a Smurf just so you know.I dont team with them.I dont know most of them that well except Londoner.
Second of all i dont know what happened in game but if you got abused petition system is there of course to help you.
This is just my personal opinion and nothing more.I like the tradition of congratulating threads. Is one of the oldest things that survived throughtout the evolvement of this game and like i said separates this community from other mmo's where things are more impersonal.
As for bullying. In real life you cannot press a button, write a petition and make the bullie go away. Here you can.
[ QUOTE ]
as anyone non smurf wont bother reading or posting again.
[/ QUOTE ]
Speak for yourself.I am non smurf and i read the Villains section and so do a lot other people. -
[ QUOTE ]
Hmm created yesterday... is it 50 already?
[/ QUOTE ]
Not yet/But closing. We were busy getting to 50 the tanks we made 2 days ago.But fear my solar flare i say!PB is the new pink in RV -
This thread and so called "compromise" is dumb.Congratulating threads are one of the longest standing traditions in this game and is one of the things that separates these boards from World of Warcraft and other MMO's consolidated [censored]. So if you aching for your thread that is about teaming there are various ways to keep it in front page. Why dont you make a "compromise" of making the "LFT thread" instead of compromising others stuff and this games tradition.

i have never been to rv before so i dont know what it is like, but i play in siren call and i have heard about the vindicate, does this play here? i use a controller gravity radiation, i get moaned at because i use inspiration but why are they there if they are not used right? i beat most people, do you think i could beat spag bol because in siren they say he is good at 1 v1 also why have you globey commented on me at the end of your messages? i am sorry if i sound dumb i am new to this pvp and i am having so much fun i am trying to learn. thankyou
[/ QUOTE ]
Righto. As i said in another thread welcome to CoX PvP community.
Vindicate/Fatality is our Supergroup and is a pure PvP supergroup. We play across all zones but most of the time Warburg,Recluse Victory and arena events.
Spag or Spag Bol is one of our members who is a top notch PvPer in my opinion.
If you get moaned for using inspirations dont be bothered much keep using them because anyone who claims that inspirations is cheating doesnt know a thing about CoX PvP.
If i think you can beat Spag Bol?Not at the moment i highly doubt it due to a)experience which comes in time so keep playing and enjoying b) builds, since every member of Vindicate has pretty expensive builds.
Dont take personally Globey's message the way you worded that post sounded funny he didnt mean it in a bad way so nothing personal mate
[ QUOTE ]
i am sorry if i sound dumb i am new to this pvp and i am having so much fun i am trying to learn. thankyou

Like KS said best thing to do is move to higher level zones.Recluse Victory and Warburg. Also KS's PvP nights are a great place to get the hand of things and see how things move in higher tier PvP as well as team with some experienced PvPers from establised PvP SG's like Vindicate/Fatality,Retribution,E.V.I.L etc. Also i am pretty certain if you ask any experienced PvPer for advice you will most likely get an answer so you can always start by sending me a tell @Tainted Greek for any advice and if i can help you i will.
Good luck in PvPing hope to see you in Warburg/RV/Arena -
I am willing to participate for testing purposes you can contact me @Tainted Greek when you have more

[ QUOTE ]
Question, do you guys ever PvP on defiant any more? i only ask as my sg would love some more action in RV and some new faces to go along side the super nation.
PvP is not dead on defiant but it could use a kick in the butt
[/ QUOTE ]
Well i have no toons on Defiant any more to be honest.Due to more PvP action on Union (from my experience so far).
RV been packed with action lately which is great!Had some awsome fights both hero and villains side and seems WB and SC are busy as well (especially SC judging from the arena chat).
There is a good mix of PvPers at the moment and a lot new faces too in zones. And KS's PvP nights been awsome as well with great turnouts.
Kinda off topic sorry for derail Shock.Anyway dunno about the rest but i moved my toons which were all PvP orientated on Union.I think most of our SG has done the same. -
[ QUOTE ]
Uhum, so for you it's fairer that rad psy, as you say, is hit once -and mezzed- and just stand there mezzed till its killed -a 1 hit kill in terms of practise-. Whereas the melee toon ahving to run out of debuffs range and rushing in again, or simply burn the break frees by stacking mez continuously is pretty unfair. Now that's coherence
[/ QUOTE ]
Anyone who thinks that a rad/* will pop a breakfree against a melee with some sort of maz needs to rethink about this statement.
Perma AM makes bf's in such situations obsolete.
PS: Scoring kills against a proper PvPer with a stone/stone brute is in the sphere of impossible. -
Another epic PvP session in RV!Loads of fun thanks to all the guys that were was good fun and so nice to see so many people jumping about.
-
[ QUOTE ]
You could have it so the flag supressed movement speed/TP maybe.
[/ QUOTE ]
This is a must. For viable capture the flag pvp. -
Just to say i am not saying idea sucks or something seri.I think is great but i doubt will work cause of many many reasons. Its really necessary to have a controlled situation for things like this.
-
Good luck making this work.Which wont happen.
[ QUOTE ]
Now for this to work requires some genuine honesty!!
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah...Expecting honesty in PvP is having great expectations imho
[ QUOTE ]
Obviously the defending teams are NOT allowed to kill the FLH/FLV either lol
[/ QUOTE ]
Which is highly likely considering the rate AoE powers are used.
[ QUOTE ]
Now, for this to work we need roughly the same number of heroes to villains.
[/ QUOTE ]
This also cant happen because RV is not limited entry but open to all.
[ QUOTE ]
This person must then make it back to a Judge (located very close to the Flag hero) and hand the judge the Wakey.
[/ QUOTE ]
Abusable. One person stands at judge with tp friend and insta teleports.
I wish for a capture the flag mode but it must fulfill some requirements first.
a)To be able to combat/defend the flag carrier while it travels (which means no tp friend working,no SS,no SJ,no CJ debuff on flag carrier)
b)To be entered through arena so the numbers are balanced
c)The flag/flag carriers to be visually recognisable really easy
d)The map to have a total lack of PvE and have open landscape
e)To actually receive rewards through participating in a CTF -
PS: Using a heavy to PvP is not a good idea. But it kinda makes a point how faulty the reward system for pvp is.
