There's absolutely nothing hardcore about this endgame system.
The individual trials may be quick, but it takes so many runs to accomplish anything meaningful people are literally camping out on their 50's almost exclusively.

Tell me, just how good for new player retention do you think the current situation is? Today I got a wild impulse and made a new Dom. He's level 8 and I have seen all of three other players in the time it took me to get him to that level. THREE. Meanwhile searches reveal that there are in fact tons of people on....and they're all 50's grinding trials and TF's.

If I were a brand new customer who just bought CoH today I would come to the erroneous conclusion the game is utterly dead. Or I MIGHT if I came to the forums realize that I'll have tons of people to play with if I can stomach getting to 50 almost entirely solo.

Anyone who says this state of affairs is good for the long term future of the game is fooling themselves. All it does is satisfy the individuals who wanted an "end game" to start with.

    I agree completely.
As things stand right now those of us who do not wish to participate in the Incarnate system are reduced to soloing most of the time. I just checked and right now on Liberty, a search returns fifty people online. Forty-six of them are 50's. To say that low level teaming is dead is a bit of an understatement. Doing any of the things in Sam's list would at least help those of us that don't want to grind the Incarnate system to have something fresh to do upon occasion.

At this point I'm not even asking for new story arcs. SOMETHING new to occupy my time would be nice.
  4. A very interesting question indeed Sam.
My opinion is that games should encourage us to try things out, but not force us to continue with a given activity should we decide we don't like it. In that regard multiple avenues to accomplish a given goal should exist. With regards to MMO's this just makes good business sense as it broadens the appeal of the game and keeps more subs active.

I play games to relax. Any game that I feel is trying to force me repeatedly to do something I don't like doesn't hold my attention (or my business) for very long.

    See the problem?
I'm not trying to be snippy, but please re-read the last sentence of the post you quoted. All I'm saying is I wish they could strike a balance that doesn't leave anyone out in the cold. I fail to see how that is unreasonable in the slightest.

That's not quite what I meant.
A new TF? I'll run that once, then probably not touch it again for a long while. That gives me a couple hours worth of content. Powerset proliferation on the other hand, gives me literally weeks to months of things to do. For example if they gave Illusion to Doms, I would probably try every single secondary with it. That's a lot of time and hence, a continued sub.

One type of those content updates keeps me subscribed pretty much indefinitely, while the other leaves me running out of things to do that I enjoy. I realize however that if the Devs were to devote all their resources to just the things I like, then folks who actually enjoy the Incarnate System would be in the same boat I am in right now. My hope is for the Devs to find a happy medium that keeps us all entertained.

With the Praetorian Hamidon out there and Cole himself I expect that future issues will have a MAJOR Incarnate portion. However, let's not forget there are plenty of content additions they can add that have nothing to do with Incarnates.

I also get why they want to beef up both Prae and the Incarnate system. Not doing so would have them being accused of abandoning yet ANOTHER system. *cough* bases, pvp *cough*
I actually agree with you completely on all the above. I would think the Devs would want to keep us all paying and playing as long as possible. Focusing all development entirely on one thing simply isn't going to do that for some people.

To be fair, we as players really have no idea how time intensive something like powerset proliferation is. For all we know, it could be as simple as copying and pasting an entry from one database to another. Or it could be a living hell that takes a team of people days on end to do one single powerset. Because of that I try to avoid making statements about how easy or hard something would be for the Devs to do.

We're going to pull Issue 20 and rework it. We'll get back to you in August."

I'm not being snarky, I'm truly not. Issue 20 has been announced, either all of it or the big content additions at the very least. That's what it's going to be. You can make your displeasure known and hope they take it into account for the next issue or two (depending on how long their development cycle is), but beyond talking on the forums there's two things you can do at this point; either continue to play the parts of the game you like or unsubscribe, giving the reason for your canceled subscription in the exit survey.

It would be awesome if the dev team had a faster response and turnaround time, it really would. But Issue 20 isn't going to be changed at this point, for better or worse. They've sunk far too many manhours into it already.
You have misunderstood me. I do not expect them to change a single thing that is going to be in I20, and have accepted the fact that, for me, it is a "non-update" of sorts. By making my displeasure known at the complete lack of anything but TF's and raids in I20, it is my hope the Devs will say "Hey guys, we should really put more stuff than TF's and raids in the issues that come after that." So far they have not given me any warm fuzzy feelings they intend to do anything of the sort. Until they do, I will continue to voice my displeasure. I'm actually asking them to give me a reason to shut up.

I can understand that argument, but it honestly doesn't make me feel any better. Sorry, I can't help that. If the answer truly is that I just need to shut up and wait, and hopefully maybe the Devs will at some point possibly add some more stuff I am interested in, well then, that sucks to be honest.

Actually that is what I have done, several times. That's why my account creation date is August 2004 and I'm only at 57 months of Vet Rewards. I was kind of hoping I could break the cycle this time, but I suppose not. Ah well. Such is life in the MMO world I guess.

I'm not really all bent out of shape over it.
I would just like the Devs to show me in some small way that Issue 20 isn't going to be the standard fare from now on. If it is, I will have to at some point question why I'm sticking around. If not, then all's good for me.

I am one of those people that never really wanted CoH to have an endgame, as I felt we didn't need one. But obviously other people enjoy endgame play and I do not begrudge them that at all. I would just like to see a few small things I do enjoy in future content updates. Things like powerset proliferation, new story arcs, new costume options all go quite a long way toward keeping me engaged.

I'm not saying that I think the Devs will never do any of that again. I'm sure they will. But I suppose it's a matter of frequency for me. If I can only realistically expect those types of updates once a year, for example, then it hardly seems worth it for me to continue dumping money into the game.

*New costume pieces and sets, especially if they cover brand new concepts.
    *New weapons (pretty please?)
    *Backpacks and jetpacks.
*New powersets. Pistols, Demons, Kinetic Melee and Electrical Control were great. How about Dark Control?
*Updates on currently underperforming sets like Devices.

'Course, you can't have all of that stuff in a single Issue, I get that. But I still hope I21 has at least one of these.

Oh goodness yes, I totally forgot about one of my bigger wishes: pool power customization. Please Devs, I am begging you, let me set Hasten to a "no graphics" option.

I'm not overly thrilled with I20, but I'd hardly call it outrage. I was hoping for another round of powerset proliferation to be honest. Since I'm not really all that fond of the Incarnate System that's the sort of thing that would keep me happily churning away on various characters like I've always done.

I may try an Incarnate Trial or two, but if it's as laggy as I suspect it will be, it's not the sort of thing I'll be doing often. I'm also not a big fan of TF's so while I may try the new 20-40 TF's, again it won't be something I'll be doing often.

So for me it's more like Issue 20: Meh?

This is just silly. Security questions and a safe list, really? If they really wanted their customer accounts to be more secure, they'd do as others have said and go for a physical authenticator token system.

Hopefully your friend will have the patience to stick to any character long enough to enjoy the game. But there's always the chance that the "pacing" of an MMO is just not going to be acceptable to him. *shrugs*

I think part of his problem is the idea that some AT/powerset combo's simply do not solo well at low levels. He seemed to not like it at all when I explained that certain Controller builds are absolute monsters at high levels but at low levels are rather slow and difficult to solo at times.

So while he is used to MMO gameplay, CoH's particular take on it is different enough from what he's accustomed to that it is throwing him for a loop.
  17. Thanks for the tips guys.
I actually haven't run any of my seriously "IO'd out" characters with him, and did in fact start a new Brute on Friday. We were the same level for one day. I think the mistake I made was in playing the Brute on Saturday and jumping ahead of him. Perhaps when he rerolls again (tonight most likely ) I'll start another character and limit its play to only when he's on. That may help.
  18. I have an RL friend who just came to CoH last week. He bought Going Rogue, and has already made a ton of characters, deleted them all, and started making characters again. He has yet to get above level 10 on any character. Last night he and I were discussing it and he made the comment that the game just has so many choices available he can't make up his mind what he wants to play. It's obvious from talking to him he's beginning to get frustrated with it. We even went through every AT and discussed each one in detail, in terms of both strengths and weaknesses.

My friend has also begun to complain about how "slow" low level characters are (I believe he means kill speed). I keep telling him that he needs to stick with something long enough to get at least to the SO range and he will see that issue resolve itself. This doesn't seem to have made much of an impression. Every night it's the same scenario: he makes up a new character, and I either exemp down to his level or SK him up to mine. He gets to 8 or 9, then makes something else the next night and the process starts over. At this point he's tried every AT, some of them more than once.

So how in the devil do I get him past this? If he would just stick with one character for a few days, long enough to get to the 20's, he would see that the pace of the game really picks up. Any ideas how I can help him get going? Or do I just need to grin and bear it while he rerolls constantly every single night? Normally I encourage people to try lots of alts, but he's actually burning himself out on the game entirely by cycling through so many characters so fast.
  19. Thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to look at it.
  20. I started a SS/WP Brute yesterday and have very quickly fallen in love with the character. I put together a build for him and was hoping for some advice. I've only played SS once before and that was at CoV launch so I'm a bit unsure if my build is truly optimized. I'm looking to use the character for pretty much everything except PvP and would really appreciate any advice the community can give. His build follows:

  21. Not long before the 4th year anniversary of the game I decided to create an Ice/Ice Dom. I was having trouble coming up with a name I liked for him and thought "yeah right" when I hit "Enter Rogue Isles" with the name Cryonics in the character creator. I stared in stunned amazement as the game just started loading.

I will never ever delete that character. I consider getting a name that perfect on a (at the time) 4 year old game to be incredibly good luck.

I absolutely hate that mob. Their end drain is completely over the top. It nearly approaches Malta Sapper levels of effectiveness.

I will agree that Peacebringers need some love. But Warshades? No way. They're plenty strong enough as is imho.

Oh please yes, this. There are some origins I rarely play (seems like most of my ideas are for Science and Magic characters), but on the occasion I do play an origin I am unfamiliar with finding the enhancements I need can be very annoying. Fixing this rather longstanding bug would resolve that.

For myself, I'd really like to see:
    1) More powerset proliferation for all AT's. Though if the Devs could only do one, I'd take Illusion for Doms.
    2) Power customization for pool powers. Please for the love of all that's holy let me turn OFF the graphics of Hasten! I have several characters that I had originally planned really cool hand auras for that Hasten completely obscures.
    3) Streamline the interface for base storage items. Let me click on one salvage rack and access what's in all of them. Ditto for enhancement tables. Continue to limit my storage total based on the number of racks and tables, fine. But let me stop running everywhere like a road runner on drugs when I'm having a crafting/slotting session.
