Quote:I understand where you're coming from, but ask yourself this: How well would the IO system work out if absolutely no one farmed for anything ever? My guess is "not very well." Does this mean I think the Devs support farming? No. But the simple act of non-exploitive farming for drops does absolutely nothing to hurt the game and instead actually helps the supply side of things when it comes to IO's.You're free to believe that, but recognize that if you take the next step and say that because the devs allow farming, the devs must honor farming, you'd be wrong. Not in a debate sense, but simply in the sense that they won't, and no one should be surprised when they don't. As I said, they won't go too far out of their way to stop (non-exploitive) farming, but they also have no problem with interfering with it by side-effect.
That's what I mean when I say they do not encourage it. You can do it, but don't expect the devs to help, and don't expect the devs to worry about hurting the activity either. It is in that sense that dev intent is highly relevant. Its relevant to all the people that act surprised when the devs act contrary to a highly inaccurate assumption of their intent.
If the Devs were to actually patch something in that somehow prevented any sort of farming at all, you can bet the IO system would crash and burn. In that sense they really should concern themselves with hurting the activity, IMHO. -
My system appeared to verify the I19 predownload, apply it, then downloaded another 10 MB or so and applied that. One odd thing though: the launcher version number still says Issue 18, even after closing and re-opening it. Color me confuzzled.

Quote:Interesting. To be honest if that's how the Devs wanted the badge system to work they probably shouldn't have put in accolade powers that buff people's characters. Ah well, it is what it is I suppose. I will continue to be amused by the hate aimed at anyone farming for drops. Doing so is such a staple of the MMO genre and present in practically every other MMO I've played. I just can't understand the absolute hate so many have for it here. It's important to note that early badge/achievement theory expected players to just play normally and then go 'Oh hey I got a badge what did I do to get that?' once one landed on them.
The obsessive 'Okay now what do I do next? Okay, I can find them at <x>? Okay! Let's go work on that!' behavior really caught a lot of developers by surprise. And in fact, Paragon Studios FORGOT about this pattern, when they put together the original AE badges.
That's the perspective difference. Developers who include badges like that are coming from the "Well, not everyone will get them, some of them will eventually get them, and then they can be proud that they did" position. -
Quote:It's statements like these that honestly make me scratch my head. Just look at all the defeat badges we have. A great many of them you will not get in a reasonable time unless you specifically go after those kinds of mobs/missions. To me, repeating the same in game task (in this case, killing mobs of type x) over and over again while working toward a specified goal is farming. You are farming mobs for a reward you want. Maybe the Devs (and a lot of the community, apparently) just have a different definition of farming than I do. I figure that must be it, because in CoH the term "farming" definitely has a very negative connotation that it just doesn't have in other games I've played. On more than one occasion I've mentioned to the devs that a particular feature would be held up as "encouraging farming." In every case, I was told that essentially that was an unavoidable side effect, not the intended purpose.
Here's the bottom line on farming. Unless it involves exploits, the devs won't usually go out of their way to stop farming. On the other hand, if something they do hurts a particular kind of farming, they also won't shed a tear either. Farming is an unprotected activity. -
Ooooohhhh yeah!
Please, oh please, be Issue 19! I have so much planned for when it hits. -

Sleep, Hold, Stun, Fear, Immobilize, Confuse.
Edited to add: I'm pretty sure Domination does boost the stuns in energy assault. I haven't played my Grav/Energy in a while, but I do seem to remember Bonesmasher getting boosted by Domination.
Oh and the reason Domination no longer boosts damage is because the damage scalar of the AT was increased across the board in Issue 15. We no longer need the damage boost from Domination as we essentially have it all the time. -
I am thankful for my best friend. He has helped me through some very rough times and keeps me sane.
-
Don't let that bother you. If you have a concept you want to play, play it.
I didn't know my plant/fire Dom was considered FOTM until well after I had created him. I just had an idea that I wanted to go with. He wound up being my first 50. -
I did Beethoven's 5th Symphony with a friend last night. Not only were the ambushes coming very fast, but they were enormous. At one point my friend commented they were the largest ambushes he had ever seen. Kind of odd when you consider we were on a team of two. We didn't even have the difficulty cranked up. Thankfully we were on two very strong characters, or it would have been rather ugly.
I did another tip on a lower level character yesterday (sorry the name escapes me) in which you are ambushed by one wave each of Longbow, PPD, and Legacy Chain. Well I assume it is supposed to be 3 waves, but they all spawned within a few seconds or so of each other and I had 12 minions on me at once.
Tip and Praetorian ambushes definitely feel buggy. Here's to hoping people are reporting them as such. -
Just some things I noticed right off:
1) You didn't take Mesmerize. Mesmerize is an awesome power. Completely unslotted, it lasts 45 seconds, has a 6 second recharge, and will sleep a boss in a single application without Domination. For all those reasons, I would classify it as a must have. (Oh, and the PToD? They don't protect against sleep.)
2) You didn't take Mass Hypnosis. It's an AoE sleep that can be made permanent with just SO's, and it produces no aggro whatsoever. Its range is sufficient that you can sleep a spawn from outside normal aggro range. With this power my mind/fire dom routinely solos entire missions without taking a single point of damage. I'm serious.
3) You skipped Terrify. It's a really good power, and can provide nice damage mitigation when dealing with large numbers of mobs.
4) There are almost no recharge time bonuses in your build at all. You do have Hasten, which is good, but Dominators live and die by recharge time as most of our more potent abilities typically have hefty recharge numbers.
Honestly I wouldn't go for +Defense on a Dom. At least, not to the exclusion of recharge. -
Someone sending me tells asking me to buy inf is spamming.
Someone sending a tell asking if I would like to join an SG is not spamming.
Maybe I'm just weird, but I don't get offended at being asked a question by someone else. When it comes to SG invites, my reply is always "no thanks" because I have two SG bases of my own to look after so all my characters go into my SG's.
Let me ask this question: if someone you don't know sends a tell asking if you'd like to team up, is that spamming? And if not, what's the difference? Both situations involve a complete stranger asking you a question completely unsolicited by you. Have we really gotten so insular as a community that all communication must be a certain way or it upsets us? -
Silver Gale, you know this community too well.
I wouldn't be opposed to weather effects in missions. Out in the game world though? Ehhh not so much. -
Quote:And don't forget Electric characters. Using their powers in a downpour might not be the smartest idea.Well, for immersion sake, then perception would likely have to be halved. Rain/snow/fog always decreases visibility. Not to mention, AT's with physical weapons, will likely have a -ToHit. I mean, it can't be that easy to maintain a grip on your Broadsword when it's pouring down rain.
Oh, and that Stalker Hide? *pfth* just look for the rain hitting nothing in midair. -
Let's not and say we did. Honestly, every zone looking like Dark Astoria when it rains? Ugh, no thanks. I despise that zone precisely because I cannot see anything in it. I avoid it at all costs.
I've played several games with weather effects. I was unimpressed by all of them. As someone else in the thread pointed out, the first time it's cool. After that it gets annoying. -
Quote:Don't forget slows. Those pesky little mutts employed by the Council mostly ignore slows as well. I remember the first time I dropped Quicksand on a group of them. I was unpleasantly surprised.o.O
The only other thing I'm not fond of seeing are things that resist immobs - War Wolves, most often, simply because (a) I play a lot of controllers and doms, and (b) a good number of other ATs can also get immobs (MM - secondary or PPP, Tank in APP, Blaster in secondary, etc.) and having that just flat out ignored... yeah.
Destroyer bosses are pretty close to the top of my "hate these guys" list. They just can't be held, even when scaled down to lieutenants. -
I think that's what I like the most about inherent Fitness. It's not just awesome because we can have Stamina at low levels. It's great because it opens up choices we simply didn't have before or just flat out removes some of the hard build decisions we had to make in the past.
-
Quote:I like the way you think.I haven't seen any official announcement of one but it has been quite a while since the last one. If the Devs were smart they'd give us one for the Thanksgiving weekend to make up for the bad news that I19 is getting delayed until after Thanksgiving. *hint, hint*
Double XP weekends are a ton of fun. And not just because of the speedy leveling. People come crawling out of the woodworks to join teams. It's awesome. -
So with Fitness becoming inherent, what do you think you will replace it with on your Doms that have it? For myself, I'm leaning toward the Concealment pool. I like the idea of stealthing missions, and those powers can take LoTG +Recharges. Also the stealth powers have the advantage of working well with just the base slot.
I'm also happy at the thought of being able to take things like travel powers earlier without feeling like I'm sacrificing something.
So what are your plans? Leadership? Stealth? Medicine, perhaps? Or maybe picking up powers you skipped before from the Primary and Secondary? -
When it comes to weather, I'd rather they didn't. I've played games that had weather effects before and I just didn't care for them at all.
-
I dropped Combustion long before my plant/fire even hit 50. I found it unnecessary even before I got the Fire Mastery powers.
-
Quote:Personally I prefer Fire Mastery.Nice, I just got mine to 43. Should be 50 by the end of the night. I was just curious on how they played out on high end content. Fire Breath+Combustion seems pretty decent so far. I'll probably go /Cold epic so I can have Hoarfrost & Sleet. Even though Fireball does sound nice. I've just come back from a long break so I'm trying to get up to speed as quickly as possible haha.
Creepers plus Rain of Fire, followed by Fireball is an awesome sight. I remember the first time I used the Fire Mastery epic powers on a team. The friend I was running with said "that's just not right" in Vent.
But I could see where Cold would be good too. Sleet is a good AoE and having the emergency self heal would be nice. I just like fire. -
Quote:IMHO if you focus on a high recharge build (perhaps even Perma-Dom) softcapping is hardly necessary. Mobs can't hurt you if they can't move.1) Is it possible to Soft cap & have a decent amount of recharge, without devouring my wallet?
2)Is it even necessary? lol. I was thinking with i19 around the corner I'd be running a lot more TFs, and being Soft Capped might help this a lot.
3)I keep hearing that a Dom isn't a good thing for running TFs with. Is this true? I figured Plant/Fire might be an exception because of the DPS, but would something else be better?
As for Dom's not being good on TF's? Utter rubbish. My first 50 was a plant/fire Dom. My SG calls him "The OP Dom" because of some of the stunts I've pulled off with him. Take that as you will.
