Questions about Plant/Fire
1) Is it possible to Soft cap & have a decent amount of recharge, without devouring my wallet?
2)Is it even necessary? lol. I was thinking with i19 around the corner I'd be running a lot more TFs, and being Soft Capped might help this a lot. 3)I keep hearing that a Dom isn't a good thing for running TFs with. Is this true? I figured Plant/Fire might be an exception because of the DPS, but would something else be better? |
As for Dom's not being good on TF's? Utter rubbish. My first 50 was a plant/fire Dom. My SG calls him "The OP Dom" because of some of the stunts I've pulled off with him. Take that as you will.

2) I agree with Steel. It's possible, but overkill. I've been running my main with no investment in defense at all and had no problems. With i19, I'm going to swap out for //Cold and end up with about 35% S/L. The way I look at it, Defense is an afterthought for Dominators.
3) Yes and no. I've done many speed run ITFs (25-30 minutes) where Plant/Fire dominators are basically cannon fodder. At the same time, my Mind/Energy Dominator does wonderfully because I have several controls that do not aggro (awesome with ambush heavy content), enough stealth to go unnoticed by all but AVs, and the ability to confuse, sleep, or hold any of the AVs.
Switch over to a "normal paced" TF, say where you're steam rolling, clearing, or even just not making an effort to get through it quick, and this is not the case. On steam rolling TFs (treating mobs almost like you would a farm) Plant/Fire will shine, because you have Seeds up so often and can do Blasterish damage. The DPS capabilities of some Plant/Fire will show up my Mind/Energy on some such teams/TFs, because my soft controls become less useful and I like the AoE and pets.
From what I've seen, Plant/Fire doesn't do very well on LGTFs, at least if they're done with much speed, and that's for various reasons.
Other than those two cases, I would be surprised to see if you had much issue. In fact, if you took Seeds at 8 you will have it no matter how much you exemplar for a TF. That's going to be an awesome addition to any low level TF. With that in mind, I would recommend you take the time and investment in a couple purples. Plant/ can use 4 of the cheaper ones (immo, hold, confuse, and sleep), with confuse and sleep being incredibly cheap for how good they are.

I play heroes on Champion.
I play villains on Virtue.
Nice, I just got mine to 43. Should be 50 by the end of the night. I was just curious on how they played out on high end content. Fire Breath+Combustion seems pretty decent so far. I'll probably go /Cold epic so I can have Hoarfrost & Sleet. Even though Fireball does sound nice. I've just come back from a long break so I'm trying to get up to speed as quickly as possible haha.

Creepers plus Rain of Fire, followed by Fireball is an awesome sight. I remember the first time I used the Fire Mastery epic powers on a team. The friend I was running with said "that's just not right" in Vent.

But I could see where Cold would be good too. Sleet is a good AoE and having the emergency self heal would be nice. I just like fire.

Would you drop Combustion then? idk to me, It seems like it wouldn't do you much good & would slow you down. Seeing as you'd probably lead with Seeds then Fire Breath, followed up with RoF & Fire Ball. right? Or am I missing something

I was really disappointed with Combustion. I had high hopes for it when I saw that it does more damage than Psychic Shockwave, but in practice the DoT mechanic, agonizing cast time, and limited range really diminish its appeal for me.
Every Plant power is fully effective at range. Most fire powers are also effective at range, and Seeds and Fire Breath are only effective at range.... I really feel it just makes sense to stay at range as much as possible.
Currently I have enough recharge for Strangler, Fire Blast, and Blaze to form a strong enough attack chain that I'm not tempted to melee with Incinerate. Because Roots is such a good spell and I have it spec'd for damage, I also recast it constantly and along with Fire Breath it fills in any gaps I may have in my chain, not that it's normally necessary.
I avoid melee as much as possible that lets me focus solely on ranged defense, not that I've really put much effort into building it up since Plants offers so much control that it kind of makes it unnecessary.
I also feel that Spirit Tree's healing capacity is better suited to a less melee focused build. Putting it at a corner so that it aims both ways down a hallway and then retreating around the corner to heal for a few seconds while your teammates/creepers/fly trap tank for you, or as the rooted enemies just stand there is really nice.
Lastly I think one of the big strengths of Plant is its ridiculous Roots damage, and that'll negate the mitigation you get from Creepers', Rain of Fire's and Sleet's knockback/fear/slow effects, which'll make it harder to melee successfully. I would say that the AoE damage you get from Roots will be far superior to Combustion over any reasonable length of time, so I wouldn't recommend ditching the former for the latter as a damage source.
Sure, I'll post one when I get home for lunch.
