I think the part that disturbed me the most was the bit about "splashing on a brute".

Likely to upset him, isn't it?

  3. Welcome Avatea, give those yanks some stick and make sure they keep us Euro guys in the know!

Contrary to HH, I do bite, but I tend to apologise profusely afterwards.
  4. The really incredible thing is you get a period of lag. The whole 8 man team you're on get it. Every team that every member of your SG is on gets it for the same length of time, hell even the Union Chat channel reports it, and you bug it and get "Check your router settings".

New and interested players don't give a carp about what's being routed where, they just want to play on a game that doesn't rubber band them and chuck them off the server every 10 darn minutes.

    [/ QUOTE ]

^^This. NC say the problem is "beyond their control", yet it's something that's been going on for such a long time surely someone would have considered moving the damn servers to a less crappily routed location? Yes I know there's a cost implication and it's not something that would be undertaken lightly, but if it's the main reason that new players are leaving, surely it should be given more serious consideration?

ML, whilst I agree with the sentiment of your posts and your ire, should we really be surprised? NC have always been legendarily poor at keeping us informed about goings on, so why should the situation now be any different?

I wonder if, like Klingon, Rikti ever becomes a studiable language. I wonder, also, if anyone's ever dressed up as a Rikti at convention? Maybe in addition Ms Liberty and Ghost Widow, NC should invest in a Rikti uniform? How awesome would that look roaming around the NEC?
  8. Swissy really is teh awesome when it comes to artwork.

Is there a rule somewhere that says "Any new content has to appeal to everyone all the time?" No, thought not. It's free, it's something different to do. It gets my vote.

Purple, the purple villain woke one morning in his purple bed, put on his purple suit and thought to himself, "Hmm I think I might go to Purple Street in Kings Row and rob the purple bank! So he strolled over there broke down the purple doors, defeated the purple agents, and stole the purple bag of money. Then Purple the purple hero showed up and yelled, "Stop Purple! I, Purple will show you the wrongs of your evil purple ways!"

After a long fight Purple the Villain was defeated and transported to his purple jail. Before walking in, he looked at Purple the Purple PPD officer holding jail cell door who said...

    QR..

Just a couple of things I'd like to comment on here.

I don't care how long you've been playing, or how many 50s you have, if you start dictating to me how to build and / or play my character you are going to be told where to stick it. The length of time you have been playing does NOT give you the right to start ordering other people about. Advise, suggest, sure, but start giving an "I'm better than you 'cos I have more 50s / vet badges than you" attitude and you're going to get peoples backs up. What's right for you isn't necessarily right for them.

Well la-di da, well done you. Your paper hat is in the post. That is elitism; "a superior attitude"

When I see a new player, Im stuck in a dilema. On the one hand, I really dont want to patronise him/her by telling him/her what to get. On the other hand, a few key pointers (like GET STAMINA) can be really helpful. I dont know what other people think about this.

I suppose the dilema also applies to play, occassionally. I remember I was oncein a small team of new players, around level 5-8, who were sucking wind a lot. I noticed that they were all running sprint whilst fighting, and I suggested, politely, that its agood idea to turn that off whist fighting. One or two players got the hump and gave me an ear bashing.

So Im not talking about "ZOMG u n00b u have to slot flamethrower with two range and one accuracy" (or whatever). Stuff that. But a few very basic pointers can really make a difference to a toon, and possibly keep that player in the game. Dilema... Dilema....

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think that's the key, Cognito. It's all about approach. I think it's a 50/50 whether well intentioned advice makes people get the hump or go "oh ok fair enough", but you're more likely to get the latter response if you say something like, "Have you thought of..." or, "Maybe we should try..." rather than "[censored] are you...." or "FFS you should....."

(censor I love you.. you censor one but not the other *shakes head*)

Nothing like a thread about community elitism to bring out the WoW hate brigade.

Hey guys, newsflash - forums aren't indicative of the gaming populace. If you've had serious, consistent issues on WoW ingame then you're either one the unluckiest people or you're being a total jerk yourself.

I'm elitist. I'm horribly elitist. I don't have a problem with new players not knowing how things work or how to play x to it's best potential - I just don't enjoy playing with them that much. Their style/speed of play simply doesn't match mine, I have friends that don't match. It's not a huge deal.

Elitism is fine and dandy, being a dick isn't and while similar, they're different things.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Without wishing to get into an argument over semantics, I don't think that what you're talking about is what most people think of as elitism.

Elitism for me is that arrogant, holier than though, "I am right and anyone who disagrees with me, irrespective of how polite or logical their argument is should disappear back under the rock from whence they slithered" attitude. And actually, that is being a dick.

There are a couple of people on these boards who really do have an overly inflated opinion of themselves, and of the validity of their opinions compared with those of other peoples, but I think that they do tend to stick out and aren't generally indicative of the general forum "feel". We all know who those people are, so perhaps it's better just to take the attitude, "Well that's the way they are, they're like that with everyone, so just let 'em get on with it."

Of the rest of us, I think we all have our moments; hastily created, and subsequently regretted posts, a dry sense of humour coupled with being unknown not translating terribly well in text, it can all contribute to misinterpretation and people can come across as nothing what they're like if you were to meet them outside as it were.

Perhaps the few people that do give that elitist attitude that you're talking about make all of the forums seem like that because they're a) so prolific and b) tend to stick out above the humdrum because of that? I think it's human nature that we tend to notice bad stuff more than we notice good stuff.

I've not really seen much of the EvE or WoW boards, but one I can recommend for an example of elitism and downright rudeness is the Age of Conan forums. You can come away from those wanting to smash stuff.
