  3. Lord Recluse: OH, Ghosty, I just had the worst dream ever! I dreamed that Statesman was pulling off my spider arms and Positron was giving me a wedgie while surrounded by glittering bubbles! What do you suppose it means?
    Ghost Widow: *sighhh*
  4. All over the US, especially in Paragon, strange portals have suddenly started appearing out of nowhere, sucking in a victim, then disappearing as quickly as they came. Nobody has yet found a way to create a place that is safe from these portals, through magic or technology.

Studies of the dimensional portals ensued (accompanied by the disappearance of many researchers) and the reason was found for the fact that Paragon has the highest concentration of these portals, compared to anywhere in the world.

    The heroes of Paragon.
The numerous gadgets, metahumans, and especially magic spells and artifacts were found to be a contributing factor, as well as the War Walls. The War Walls have been reduced to minimum power, because it was deemed that the dimensional "vacuums" were a greater threat to the general populace than the Rikti.

Steps were taken against superbeings (you can, however, be an illegal superbeing and still have all your powers) and a law was passed, to cut down on the numerous freak vacuum portals. All those that had escaped from other worlds were immediately returned in the quickest way possible to their home planet/dimensions.
The heroes that relied on technology had many of their gadgets confiscated, particularly anti-gravity and disruptor devices. The magical heroes were in a similar predicament, as their artifacts were all removed and taken to the MAGI vault (Azuria has since been sucked away, and returned from, sixteen portals to date), and the new law has forbidden them from using any of their spells. Many mutants fled to the Rogue Isles, and those that chose to remain were fitted with power-suppressing collars.
Because the War Walls are weakened, Rikti run rampant in Paragon City, and new, weak heroes hardly ever live to see the second day of their career.

Not that the situation in the Rogue Isles is any better. The fabric of space-time seems to be even more holey there, and hapless villains are often sucked into a portal, never to be seen again.

  7. "No, not Ranch-o Suck-o. Welcome t' Camp Cesspit." She snickered.
"Say, uh, d'you know what our classes are? I hear that a batgirl's teaching sixth period. Batwinged girl."
  8. "So, bwahaha mwahahaha an' all that stuff? With giant evil robots?"
Ink Dyne snickered. "Wish I still had my V.A.D. Very Annoying Device. Of course, th' Crossbow confiscated it."
  9. Ink Dyne spoke. "'Kay, Kevin. Anyway, random creature? Nahh. I know perfectly well what Jaws is. An' it knows better than t' attack people without my saying so. It's smart."
  10. Inky turned to Katsumei. "Well, it's a long story."

"I had a seed containing my friend Jaws, who's a giant, walking, intelligent flytrap. Ordinarily, I could use my plant power t'make it grow, but my powers were shut off once I came here. So I got an idea. Jaws grows real quickly, so I planted its seed in th' garden. Soon, Jaws came back t'me in my cell. Then I got an idea for freeing my mind. Jaws joined its power with mine for a secon', an' I broke through with its help, but it wasn' just my mind. Two of th' Thorns came straight up through th' lights on th' bracers and broke 'em. I got my power back then, so I used vines an' sap t'knit the bracers back t'gether so nobody suspected. But if I tried t'escape now, I'd be killed. I can't stand up t' th' Crossbow. So I'm staying a while longer 'cause I need friends. An' as for a way out, nope. Not unless I can get my skateboard back."
  11. Ink Dyne nodded. "Yah. Well, it helps t' have lockpicking Thorns."

She dusted off a small patch of the dirty floor and sat down in it, blowing a wisp of hair out of her face.
"So, what's your story? I'd like t'get t' know you. There's no way outta this place without allies."
  12. ((I'll keep that in mind! ^^))
  13. Ink Dyne slowly crept along the wall, then turned a corner. There was another door there, and she was terribly bored.

One very thin Thorn shot from her index finger. Slowly, Inky moved to the lock and inserted the Thorn.

After a bit of tinkering, the lock clicked open. She slowly opened the door.

    Inside were two people.

"He-llo. I'm Inky. Trying t' get t'know people here," she said to Kevin.

She slipped into the cell and shut the door behind her.
  14. ((Yes.))

Jaws took the pencil and paper, then skittered away from the foot and jumped up onto Inky's filthy bunk, scribbling furiously.

    It held up the pad:

    I am a friend
  15. Inky opened the cell door, but before doing so, she reached into a pocket and pulled out a pad of paper and a pencil. She handed them to Jaws.

"If you need to talk to Jason, use this. You know how."
    Jaws nodded.

Inky walked out the door, shutting it behind her.
  16. Suddenly, a plan popped into Ink Dyne's head, a brilliant plan if it worked.
    A plan that involved Jaws.
A plan that would set her free.
    "Jaws, come out," she whispered.

    ----

Jaws scuttled up onto the bunk. Through the link they shared, shared by all plant-controlling Dominators, it knew what to do.
Ink Dyne has a plan. She always does. I will follow her plan.
Jaws moved behind her, and suddenly it wrapped two tendrils around her head. Two more around her neck, and the last two went around her waist.
    ----

Inky closed her eyes and concentrated. There was a wall before her, a blanket covering her mind. In this image, she charged headfirst at the wall and it it with an almighty thump.

It seemed to slow down. The imaginary wall slowly bent outwards as if it was made of rubber.
"Jaws, lend me your strength," she whispered.

With all her force and Jaws's, she pushed at the wall, and suddenly it shattered into a million pieces. Her mind felt sharper and clearer than it had been ever since she came to this jail.

But her mind wasn't the only thing that had broken free. Faster than the eye could follow, a single huge black Thorn popped up from each of her wrists, impaling the lights on the bracers and shattering the surrounding metal.

Ink Dyne smirked as the bracers fell away from her wrists, huge black Thorns sliding out of each and every one of the myriad rips in her suit.

This had turned out better than she'd expected.

But now wasn't the time. She could summon vines again, and she needed allies. She had a plan for this too.

Vines shot up out of the ground, grabbing the bracers. They expertly fitted every little shard back together, then broke off (still holding the bracers in place), hardened, and died.
Inky slipped the dead bracers back on and turned to Jason, the Thorns retracting and disappearing quickly.
"It's okay. Jaws is a friend. It wouldn't hurt a fly. Okay, maybe a fly..."
  17. Jaws would have breathed a sigh of relief if it had lungs, but it didn't relax its plantly frozen stance. The patrol was still in "sight".

After the patrol was long gone, Jaws quickly pulled itself up from the ground and headed for the cells. By now, it was far too large to hide amongst the other flytraps.

It could instinctively tell where Inky was.

Quickly, it squeezed through the crack between the door and the floor, hoping that another patrol wouldn't come by.
    It needn't have worried.
    ------

Inky saw Jaws enter the cell. "JAWS!" she whispered excitedly and swept the tiny plant up in her arms.
    "IT worked! You're back!"
But Jaws was too big now to hide against her body, or even under the itchy wool blanket.

Quickly, she moved the blanket so it dangled off the edge of the bed and covered the space underneath. She whispered something to Jaws, then placed it underneath the bed.

    -----

Jaws opened its now-huge trap wide, waiting for the first unfortunate appendage to reach the space under the bed.
